Air Canada solicita reanudación vuelos

AW | 2020 06 12 11:00 | AIRLINES / GOVERNMENT

Air Canada requests resumption of flights

Canadian company implores government to resume air traffic

Air Canada asks the Government of Canada to allow airlines to resume flights. Air Canada Executive Director Calin Rovinescu literally begs Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to allow the airline to start flying again.

The executive of Canada’s largest airline is urging the Canadian government to relax travel restrictions, as they have been hurting the company’s sales. Calin Rovinescu called the government’s restrictions on travelers disproportionate, as the Coronavirus pandemic was easing in many parts of the country. The comments from the Air Canada CEO echoed a letter he sent to the President of Canada, in the Canadian travel and tourism industry, calling for a national plan to ease travel restrictions.

Canada and the United States are willing to extend the ban on non-essential travel until the end of July 2020, as both countries seek to control the spread of the coronavirus. Washington and Ottawa introduced one-month restrictions in March and renewed them in April and May. The ban, which expires on June 21, 2020, does not affect trade.

Airlines such as Air Canada have been among the hardest hit, as travel bans due to the effects of the Coronavirus resulted in thousands of flight cancellations, forcing carriers to cut jobs and costs as revenue disappeared.

AW | 2020 06 12 10:37 | AIRLINES / GOVERNMENT

UK airlines claim in court

Major airlines take UK government to court over quarantine measures

British Airways, EasyJet and Ryanair have launched a legal challenge to the UK government-imposed quarantine measures for Coronavirus, saying the flawed guidelines will crush the economy. The three airlines say in a statement on Friday 12/06 that the quarantine will have a devastating effect on tourism and the economy in general. Airlines want the government to adopt its previous policy, where quarantine was limited to passengers in high-risk countries.

The quarantine that went into effect on Monday 08/06 requires that all international arrivals that are not covered by a restricted list of exemptions be self-insulated for two weeks. The Government has said that this is to prevent the importation of Coronavirus cases and a second wave of infections that could overwhelm the National Health Service. Airlines said the quarantine should only apply to passengers in high-risk countries, as was the case earlier in the pandemic. «This would be the most practical and effective solution and allows public officials to focus on other more important problems arising from the pandemic, while aligning the UK with much of Europe that is opening its borders in mid-June», they said in a statement. The companies added that they have yet to see evidence on how and when the proposed air bridges between the UK and other countries will be implemented. The airlines said Friday 06/08 that there had been no consultation or scientific evidence provided for the quarantine policy, highlighting several inconsistencies in the approach. «If you are a French or German worker who travels to the UK weekly, you will be exempt, and the government prohibits people from traveling to and from countries with lower infection rates than the UK», they added in the statement.

British Airways, easyJet, and Ryanair launch legal action against ...

Court claims

British Airways, Ryanair and EasyJet requested a judicial review to be heard as soon as possible. The companies contend that there is no scientific evidence of such a severe policy quarantine policy, while the government also prohibits people from traveling to and from countries with lower infection rates than the UK. They also argue that quarantine, under criminal law, is stricter than the guidelines applied to people who actually have Covid-19.

Economic impact

The UK is heading for the worst Coronavirus-induced drop of any major economy, and GDP is expected to drop by at least 11.5% this year, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. A possible second wave of coronavirus would send unemployment to almost 12% in the first quarter of 2021, even if a basic free trade agreement with the European Union is reached, the OECD said on Wednesday. Companies are increasingly concerned about the possibility of a no-deal Brexit, which he warned would be catastrophic for the economy. The UK economy shrank about 20% in April, the first full month of closure, the Office for National Statistics said on Friday.

The requirement applies regardless of whether they are UK citizens or not, and those who do not comply could be fined. The quarantine was imposed after a heated debate on whether it would help British efforts to stop the outbreak or simply remove any hope that the tourism industry will recover after months of closure.

Argentina y el futuro de la aviación

AW | 2020 06 11 10:14 | AIRLINES MARKET / GOVERNMENT

Argentina and the future of aviation

Prospects for the next air market in Argentina

The Argentine skies are increasingly blue and white, although this sounds somewhat logical, in commercial jargon it would seem more real to those who make up the country’s air market. The current Coronavirus pandemic has revealed that the economy has overtaken world aviation in a perfect storm. The airlines suffocated by the Argentine economic crisis, added to the current sanitary crisis and the postponements of the aero-commercial activity, have presented a complicated panorama in the aviation of Argentina.

The consequences of the local, global effects have conjugated a very lethal cocktail for the airlines that on the part of the State there is some inaction to safeguard commercial aviation. Latam Airlines Group, the parent company of Latam Airlines Argentina, has filed for bankruptcy by filing for Chapter 11 of the United States, observing the intentions of a strong restructuring and the desire of the local company to raise the flag. Flyest Airlines has recently announced through its main inverse group to end business in the country. Aerolíneas Argentinas will eliminate its subsidiary Austral Líneas Aéreas by the end of the year, which will seek a total merger. Flybondi Líneas Aéreas, JetSmart Airlines Argentina continue to survive thanks to the restructuring. Andes Lineas Aereas, with minimal flights before the pandemic, will have a hard time joining this new scenario. Norwegian Air Argentina has suffered a debacle due to the economic consequences of Argentina before the impact of the Coronavirus when merging with Jetsmart Argentina. The dream that unveils many of achieving a monopoly of the flag line on the Argentine slopes is about to be fulfilled.

Market prospects

The most important crisis in world commercial aviation has brought backstage questions and questions about the future aero-commercial market in the Argentine Republic, leaving 85% of the world fleet grounded, causing the bankruptcy or restructuring of companies around the world. The air market in Argentina seems to present new challenges. The current world situation exposes airlines to the challenge of surviving without the aid of the Argentine State, which fly at a disadvantage because the Government continues to assist with State subsidies and advances to Aerolíneas Argentinas.

The current perspective suggests that the Argentine market would turn again towards a monopoly aviation where Aerolineas Argentinas would concentrate almost all of the airspace, where there would be less and less competitiveness and fewer offers for users, less connectivity, less employment.

Role of the State

The Government of Argentina must be responsible for future actions to protect the country’s commercial aviation, not just a spectator in favor of Aerolíneas Argentinas.

On behalf of the Ministry of Transport, they have studied, in harmony with the Ministry of Health, to return to air activity in July 2020. Although it is good news to reactivate aviation, the airlines have not received an instruction with the new conditions that require modification. the business model in advance. As for the operations at El Palomar Airport, they will continue to fight so that the model of outrage to eliminate aero-commercial activity does not take the illusions of low cost as the last resort so that Argentina does not become a monopoly market and the future of aviation is only an illusion of many and a business of a few.

Acuerdo Aerolíneas-gremios

AW | 2020 06 10 09:50 | AIRLINES / GOVERNMENT / AVIATION ORGANISMS

Aerolíneas-gremios acuerdan asignación no remunerativa

Aerolíneas agrees with aeronautical unions

Aerolíneas-unions agree non-remunerative assignment

Aerolineas Argentinas has reached an agreement on Tuesday 09/06 with all the aeronautical unions to advance with the measure of temporary suspensions of around four thousand workers, which will mean for the flag company a saving of AR$ 215 million of pesos. The sources pointed out that it was decided to maintain the purchasing power of the suspended personnel, because the salary was already depreciated by different items, such as per diem, which are not being paid and which according to the agreement represents 10 to 20 percent of the salary.

The measure adopted by the Board of Directors of the Aerolíneas Group, «seeks to protect and preserve all the sources of work, our teams, in the face of the toughest crisis that the aero-commercial industry is going through and which forces us to have almost all of our aircraft on the ground», indicates an internal statement released this afternoon. The agreement reached will govern for 60 days and safeguards the purchasing power of those workers who are suspended, through a non-remunerative assignment, as well as the contribution to social work.

The decision is framed in Article 223 bis of the Labor Contract Law and in the drastic fall in our activity, with a reduction in our income of 97%, and in the emergency situation that the country and the entire world are going through. from Covid 19. The agreement reached will govern for 60 days and safeguards the purchasing power of those workers who are suspended, through a non-remunerative assignment, as well as the contribution to social work.

The document highlights that the company needs everyone’s understanding and effort. In turn, the United Aeronautical Unions, APA, APLA, APTA, UALA, UPSA, reported in a statement that they reached an agreement with Airlines and that through this «understanding the company may carry out temporary non-punitive suspensions during the months June/July to personnel who do not perform tasks during this period as a consequence of the Coronsvirus pandemic, without affecting the workers’ pocket income and ensuring full payment of the Christmas bonus. Again, engaging in a mature dialogue between the parties, the Unions Aeronautics demonstrate that we are part of the solutions that the flag carrier needs to face the serious crisis that aviation is going through throughout the world, without ever resigning the defense of the interests of the represented workers», says the document that carries the signatures of Edgardo Llano, Ricardo Cirielli, Pablo Biró, Cristian Erhardt and Rubén Fernández, general secretaries of APA, APTA, APLA, UALA and UPSA.

Austrian receives government aid

Austrian will receive aid package for € 600 million Euros

Austrian Airlines has announced that it will receive a sum of € 600 million in financial aid from the Austrian Government due to the current paralysis of air transport due to the global health crisis. The aid package consists of € 450 million Euros from the Austrian Government and € 150 million Euros provided by its parent company, Lufthansa Group.

The Austrian Government has issued € 150 million Euros in direct state aid, € 300 million Euros in loans to be returned to banks by 2026 and another € 150 million Euros will be received as a capital injection from the Austrian parent company Airlines, the Lufthansa Group. Previously, the airline expected to need at least € 767 million in aid to restart its operations, but due to the ability to restart flights earlier, Austria reduced the amount required to € 600 million.

At the press conference, the CEO of the Lufthansa Group said: “Austrian Airlines has been and is a fundamental part of Lufthansa Group’s multi-center strategy. Thanks to this rescue package in combination with the improved framework conditions of the Austrian aviation system partners, we are in a position to rebuild the flight center in Vienna after the crisis and connect Austria to major destinations in Europe and in all the world».

As a requirement for state aid, Austrian Airlines has to reduce CO2 emissions by 30% compared to 2005 levels and increase jet fuel efficiency by 1.5% annually. The Austrian government has also established a plan in which traffic should use the railways as a means of travel if the travel time does not exceed 3 hours. The full financial deal is not yet finalized as it is still subject to Lufthansa taking state aid from Germany and approval from the Commission of the European Union (EU).

Indonesia impulsa reactivación aérea

AW | 2020 06 09 11:30 | AIRLINES MARKET / GOVERNMENT

Lion Air VS Garuda Indonesia, Cara Petugas Menurunkan Bagasi ...

Indonesia powers aerial revival

Indonesia eases travel rules to boost airlines

Indonesia‘s Government will allow airlines to carry more passengers in a rule that further eases restrictions in the aviation industry as Southeast Asia’s largest economy allows more cities to reopen after months of mobility restrictions . The Ministry of Transportation’s move to drop a rule requiring carriers to limit seating capacity to 50% while retaining mandatory virus testing and other social distancing rules for passengers came as the country saw the biggest increase infection diary.

This relaxation in the curves prompted the Lion Air Group, the country’s largest private airline, to reverse the decision to indefinitely land their planes and restart operations from Wednesday. Garuda Indonesia plans to limit its passenger load to 70% of the aircraft’s capacity, said Chief Executive Officer Irfan Setiaputra.

The reduction in airline restrictions comes after the reopening of some business sectors to revive an economy devastated by the Coronavirus pandemic that shows signs of relaxation in some regions of the vast archipelago. Authorities said 136 cities and regents can begin preparations to resume normal and productive activities as the infection rate decreases.

The revised rules for airlines will require passengers to perform a polymerase chain reaction or rapid tests before departure to ensure they are virus-free. The cost of testing is seen as preventing a recovery in the tourism and travel industry. Mandatory Covid-19 tests are likely to curb travelers’ appetites in addition to potentially higher ticket prices. The flyers will also be concerned with testing positive and how they will be handled and dealt with thereafter, according to Harry Su, Head of Capital Markets at Samuel International.

Authorities reported 1,043 new infections Tuesday, bringing the total number of cases to 33,076 and the number of deaths to 1,923, the highest number in Southeast Asia. Jakarta, which began relaxing some of its social distancing measures this week, saw 232 new cases, the largest daily increase for the capital city.

Indonesian airlines have been hit hard by a drop in travel and a ban on domestic commercial flights to combat the virus. Garuda, which experienced a 91% drop in passenger traffic in April 2020 from the previous year, is betting on a government line of credit to deal with what it calls the extremely challenging environment for airlines. Carriers can see an upturn in travel when the government reopens the country to foreign tourists in early September and domestic tourists in late July 2020.

Indonesia memperkuat kebangkitan udara

AW | 2020 06 09 10:48 | AIRLINES / GOVERNMENT / AVIATION ORGANISMS

Aerolíneas and unions continue tuning salary agreement

The suspensions of 7,500 employees of Aerolíneas Argentinas and Austral Líneas Aéreas are a few steps away from being agreed and approved before the Ministry of Labor. On Monday 08/06 in the morning the salary negotiations continued for the claims of the work suspensions. Representatives of five of the six aeronautical unions met to advance agreements, although it is not clear how much percentage of the pocket salary they will receive, with a floor of 75%. The sixth union, Aeronavegantes (AAA) announced on Friday 05/06 that it had already closed an agreement with the company with which, according to the union, it was possible to preserve the salary of the Cabin Crewmen who will be suspended during this month and next. Aerolíneas did not want to confirm the version of this union. «Only when we finish the negotiations with all the unions are we going to communicate the general result of the process. The goals are not shouted until the ball enters», said company sources.

Aerolíneas Argentinas had announced last week that it would launch the procedure for the temporary suspension of its personnel, within the framework of Article 223 Bis of the Labor Contracts Law, by which suspended employees will receive at least 75% of their salary from pocket, according to the agreement signed (and just renewed) by the CGT with the Argentine Industrial Union (UIA). The company seeks, with this agreement, to obtain savings of AR$ 500 million pesos per month, not so much in the payment of wages, but in the saving of social security payments. Suspended employees will not receive a salary, but a non-remunerative bonus. The only charge that will be maintained will be the contribution to the social work of each union. The agreement must be presented jointly between the company and the unions, which in the case of Aerolíneas and Austral are represented by the six aeronautical unions. The five that have met were APLA (Association of Airline Pilots), which bring together the Pilots of Aerolíneas Argentinas, UALA (Union of Airline Aviators) who represent the Pilots of Austral, APTA (Association of Aeronautical Technicians), APA (Aeronautical Personal Association) and UPSA (Union of Superior and Professional Personnel of Aerocomerciales Companies) that groups the hierarchical ones. The sixth union, the AAA (Argentine Association of Air Navigation), which has finalized the negotiations on Friday 06/06.

Synergy, insufficient resource

The announcement about the merger of Aerolíneas Argentinas and Austral Líneas Aéreas, a measure that sought to save some US$ 100 million a year, has been addressed without considering this exceptional situation, estimating that passenger traffic would take at least two years to complete. recover, and that from there it would take about five more years to achieve positive results.

Aerolíneas perspectives

Aerolíneas has reported that since the start of the pandemic, revenues fell 97%. Aerolíneas has an annual turnover that ranges from US$ 1.7 billion in 2019, but its expenses are, chronically, always higher than its income. Aerolíneas Argentinas faces millionaire losses in 2020 estimated at US $ 900 million dollars as a consequence of the extensive inactivity during the Coronavirus pandemic. The Executive Power has not yet guaranteed the advances of financial aid, although the decision to transfer the funds depends on the Ministry of Transportation.

Argentina reanudar aviación 07/2020

AW | 2020 06 08 10:40 | AIRLINES MARKET / GOVERNMENT

Argentina plans to resume aviation 07/2020

Argentine Government analyzes restarting aviation in July 2020

The Argentine Ministry of Transport has announced that they are studying the opening of domestic flights by July 2020. In principle, the restart of air operations would correspond to domestic routes between the provinces that have the lowest rate of Coronavirus infections.

Commercial aviation in Argentina has been suspended since mid-March 2020 and lasted until September 1, 2020. However, the Government is already working on a possible licensing scheme to operate domestic flights mainly between provinces with a low number of Coronavirus cases. The Ministry of Transport has confirmed that the possibility is being analyzed, but that it will depend on the health issue and the opinion of the Health authorities and the political sphere to authorize flights between provinces without contagion. In case of moving forward with the planning of the opening of domestic flights, the return of aviation could begin in July 2020.

Ministry of Transport

«The issue is complex and we have to be very careful and it all depends on how the pandemic evolves in the different territories. We will be on the subject in constant coordination with the Ministry of Health to assess the situation and see when we can enable the return of the activity», said Minister of Transportation Mario Meoni, in statements to the Telam Agency. The Minister noted that the National Civil Aviation Administration (ANAC) is working together with airport concessionaires to advance the necessary measures to ensure protection for both passengers and workers. However, there are some governors who oppose it because they do not want risks of new infections in their provinces.

Tourism Chamber

From the Argentine Chamber of Tourism (CAT) they had requested that tourist corridors be enabled between provinces without contagions, to have a movement, albeit minimal, during the winter holidays. «There is still no concrete definition, but it is what we have been working on. We are putting all the chips in to avoid losing winter holidays. For many destinations, the lack of activity in the season means an economic disaster», explained Aldo Elías, President of the CAT.

Air traffic

During May 2020, 5,555 passengers flew through Argentina, 99.55% less than in the same month of the previous year, when the figure was 1,228,648 passengers. It was not commercial flights, but internal flights within repatriation operations or private flights, in some cases to transport employees of companies that have operations in the interior of the country, especially in the mining and oil sector. The private company American Jet Líneas Aéreas was the one with the most activity, with 50 flights; Aerolíneas Argentinas made 47 flights; Latam Airlines Argentina three flights and the low cost JetSmart Airlines Argentina two flights.

Ministry of Health

Airlines operating in the Argentine cabotage market have established sanitary protocols to return to operating with commercial flights when restrictions are lifted. This week they are expected to be validated with the Ministry of Health. «In principle, it would only advance with domestic flights and it would be well analyzed to which destinations. Until now, in all the special flights that we carry out, we have not had cases of contagion, so it has been shown that flying is safe in this sense, the issue is whether the distance regulations are not respected in the places to which one travels», Mario Meoni clarified. The protocol that Airlines announced last week was designed following the recommendations of IATA (International Air Transport Association), ACI (Air Transport Council), WHO (World Health Organization) and the National Ministry of Health. Among the announced measures, only passengers who have flights, unaccompanied, can enter the airport and the temperature at the entrance will be controlled. The use of the chinstrap or face mask is mandatory at all times and it is recommended to do the web check-in previously, to avoid queues. During the flight, movement within the aircraft is limited to the maximum and, for the moment, reading material, blankets, pillows and headphones are suspended, as well as food and beverage services.

Reino Unido extiende cuarentena

Experiential Space @ Heathrow T5 | We Are Pop Up

AW | 2020 06 08 10:08 | AIRLINES / AIRPORTS / GOVERNMENT

Gobierno presiona extensión cuarentena a vuelos internacionales

UK extends quarantine

Government pressures for quarantine extension to international flights

The UK Government is pushing with a two-week quarantine for international flights, a move that British Airways (BA) and other companies say will devastate tourism and destroy any chance that the summer holiday season could trigger a recovery in a depression induced by the current pandemic.

British airlines such as British Airways, EasyJet and Ryanair, have threatened to sue the government for the policy, which takes effect this Monday 08/06, saying that the restrictions will be ineffective in reducing the contagion effect of Coronavirus and threatening to destroy thousands of jobs. Airlines fear the move will cause customers weary of the shutdown to delay bookings just as airlines add capacity. «Even those people who would have thought of going on vacation in July or August are now behind on making reservations since no one really knows how long the rules will last. Being locked up at home for two weeks after a vacation is something that many people really can’t. afford to do», said John Strickland, Director of JLS Consulting in London, who has held senior positions at BA and KLM.

Ryanair, easyJet and British Airways protest with British ...

European opening

With declining virus infection levels in most European countries, governments have eased travel restrictions and are opening beaches in places like Greece, Spain, and Portugal. Airlines are trying to save the summer season when tens of millions of people generally travel. The UK is one of the top 10 tourist destinations in the world and attracted over 35 million visitors last year, spending more than US$ 50 billion.

The prolonged quarantine would complicate British Airways’ plans to resume around 40% of its scheduled flights in July 2020 and compel it to continue spending ₤ 20m per day (US$ 25m), the airline said. EasyJet plans to resume some of its scheduled flights starting June 15, while Ryanair plans to restart the flight on July 1, 2020.

IAG SA, the owner of BA, together with Ryanair and EasyJet have requested by means of a letter addressed to the Ministry of the Interior that the quarantine is stricter than the one applied to people infected with Covid-19, and the exemptions for people who living in Ireland, France and Germany will make it ineffective. «In our opinion, the Government has not been able to identify a valid justification for the general nature of the regulations, more especially given the extremely severe nature of the self-isolation provisions that are applied», the statement said.

Airports impact

At the airport level, London/Heathrow may need to cut a third of its 7,000 employees if the UK government does not promptly indicate when it plans to relax the quarantine rule, Airport Executive Director John Holland-Kaye said on Monday 08/06. Europe’s busiest center has already cut a third of operating costs and management positions, he said.

Government position

James Slack, spokesman for Prime Minister Boris Johnson, told reporters last week that the government wants to work with the airline industry as the UK goes through the pandemic, defending the move as a key part of the strategy to prevent a second wave of infections that could overwhelm the health system and further devastate the economy. Britain has recorded 40,542 deaths, 10% of the world total, although the number of cases and deaths is gradually decreasing, with 77 deaths reported on Sunday 07/06. «The science is clear that if we limit the risk of new cases being brought in from abroad, we can help stop a devastating second wave. We all want to get back to normal as quickly as possible, but this cannot be at the cost of life», Interior Secretary Priti Patel said in a statement.

Aviación indonesia post-pandemia

AW | 2020 06 07 16:30 | AIRLINES MARKET / GOVERNMENT

Post-pandemic Indonesian aviation

Indonesian aviation industry forecast to recover in 2022

Air transport operators in the extensive Republic of Indonesia recently estimated that the influence of the Coronavirus pandemic on the aviation industry may persist, even until 2022. Indonesian air transport operators recently estimated that the influence of the consequences of the health crisis could last for two years.

An expert from the National Association of Indonesian Air Carriers (INACA) said that Indonesian airlines face great difficulties that can cause a negative impact until 2021 and the country’s aviation sector will not recover to pre-pandemic levels until the first quarter of 2022 (1Q2022). The International Air Transport Association (IATA), in a recent report presented to all members of the airline in the world, shared the view that the Indonesian aviation industry might have to wait until 2022 to earn as much revenue as in 2019.

Indonesian airlines, tourism and other industries warn investors of falling revenue and profits as the Coronavirus pandemic ravages Southeast Asia’s largest economy. An x-ray of the situation of the country’s airlines allows us to estimate new challenges for the future of commercial aviation.

Indonesia, a country of 260 million people, was criticized for being relatively slow to assess individuals for Coronavirus. By March 17, 2020, 172 cases of the new virus had been detected, most in Jakarta, but also in the provinces of the islands of East Java, Central Java and Riau, as well as the islands of Bali, Borneo and Sulawesi. Keeping passengers and crew safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, while limiting the spread of the virus, is a challenge for all airlines. On April 24, 2020, Indonesian authorities shut down domestic air travel in an effort to limit the spread of the virus.

Garuda Indonesia Airlines

The national airline Garuda Indonesia Airlines has been hit by a travel ban and the strong impact on domestic tourism. Irfan Sebuahutra, Chief Executive Officer of Garuda Indonesia Airlines, said that like other airlines, the company’s revenue fell dramatically since the disease broke out, by almost 90%. 70 percent of the company’s planes must remain idle in parking lots, while the occupancy rate on permitted flights must be kept below 50% to prevent the spread of the pandemic virus. Garuda Indonesia decided to fire 181 pilots since June 1, 2020, which has met objections from the Garuda Pilots Association (APG) which said the decision and news of the layoffs were delivered suddenly, not in accordance with legal provisions. and employment contracts. Meanwhile, Irfan Sebuahutra said the measure was necessary to reduce the pressure caused by the pandemic and to harmonize supply and demand for aviation operations. He noted that the carrier will continue to fulfill its obligations related to the rights of pilots in accordance with the period of validity of the signed contracts.

Lion Air

Indonesia’s Lion Air Group is probably best known for the first Boeing 737-8 MAX accident, in October 2018. The airline is back in the news, just a few weeks after restarting operations after a government banning domestic flights, closed flights again due to problems in complying with current sanitary regulations.

Lion Air, with its subsidiaries Batik Air and Wings Air, had approximately 55% of the domestic market. The shutdown was part of a larger effort to restrict internal travel that coincided with the start of Ramadan, when many Indonesians traditionally make an annual visit to their hometowns and could therefore spread the virus. By May 10, 2020, the Lion Air Group was allowed to operate again. The ban on passenger flights was relaxed to allow individuals such as officials, medical personnel, businessmen, critically ill and afflicted family members to fly between Indonesian cities.

On March 27, 2020, Lion Air had announced that it would close all flight schedules. The airline blamed travelers for not following COVID-19 regulations, with widespread passenger problems that do not adequately observe rules related to social distancing and disclosures and health paperwork. The airline stated that «many potential passengers were unable to make air travel because they did not complete the required documents and conditions during the 2019 Corona Virus Disease pandemic alert period (COVID-19)». Meanwhile, passengers apparently also failed to comply with basic regulations such as wearing a face mask, washing their hands regularly, and maintaining cleanliness while on the plane.

In announcing the latest shutdown, Lion Air cited concerns about employee health. He said he would use the time to disseminate information about new shipping requirements and documents through his website and branches. The airline had claimed it was doing improved daily cleaning procedures for aircraft to ensure a clean environment in flight, replacing HEPA filters with aircraft that had carried suspicious cases, sterilizing and enforcing social distancing.

However, in May, the Indonesian Transport Ministry suspended a flight operated by the Batik Air subsidiary on the Jakarta-Denpasar-Bali route, as the airline was found to have violated the physical distancing policy. According to the Jakarta Post, the flight was more than half full, exceeding the maximum capacity allowed by government physical distance regulations.

The impact of the Coronavirus on the company Lion Air, the airline said in a press release that it would suspend flight operations from June 5, 2020. For passengers who have already booked tickets, Lion Air offers refunds, but no new ones are accepted reservations currently.
