American Airlines y Qatar Airways inician código compartido

Globalia presiona a Bruselas para formalizar acuerdo de adquisición

Codeshare entre Latam Airlines y Malaysia Airlines

The goal is to offer international travelers an easy connection and allow them to benefit from the services shared between member airlines. While international corporate interests in Seattle continue to grow with the expansion of companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, and Boeing, Alaska hopes that this strengthened alliance with American Airlines will allow it to compete internationally, said Nat Pieper, Vice President of Alaska Airlines.

American, Seattle international expansion

The American-Alaska association is an opportunity for American to increase its presence on the west coast and start new international routes, such as one from Seattle to Bangalore, India, which is scheduled to begin in October 2020. «Many of these services are beyond the reach of any aircraft in our traditional centers in Chicago or Dallas-Fort Worth or Los Angeles. Now with a one-stop-shop, we can reach people to Bangalore, which is one of the fastest-growing global corporate markets», said Vasu Raja, Senior Vice President of Network Strategy for American Airlines. The route will be the first service from Seattle to Bangalore and the first and only nonstop flight from the United States directly to Bangalore. American Airlines also plans to add a new route from Seattle/Tacoma (SEA) to London/Heathrow (LHR) starting March 2021.

The announcement of Thursday 13/02 of its expanded partnership means that the Shared Code Program will remain active, and will now include international routes from Los Angeles (LAX) and Seattle (SEA), pending approval from the Department of Transportation. When Alaska Airlines membership with a global alliance ends in the summer of 2021, Alaska Mileage Plan loyalty members can also earn and redeem miles through more than 1,200 international destinations served by the one world network. American Airlines is a founding member of a global alliance.

The expanded relationship between American and Alaska and the pending Alaska membership will help the Seattle-based airline compete with operators such as Delta, which has a strong presence in the Seattle area and offers a national and international network outside of Seattle.

American believes that this enhanced partnership and Alaska will join a world as a significant change that benefits both the airlines and their clients on the west coast. «There is a large customer base that is loyal to Alaska in the Pacific Northwest, particularly and on the West Coast in general. If you fly anywhere [from] Seattle, you’re probably flying to Alaska. They have 350 flights on a peak day, but they don’t have an international network. Therefore, they have not yet been able to offer a truly complete solution to the customer», said Vasu Raja.

The partnership with American will change that and give Alaska more international influence. Similarly, the improved relationship with Alaska will allow Americans to be more competitive with the west coast travel markets. To emphasize how big this change would be, Vasu Raja used the example of Austin, Texas, an American Airlines center that currently does not have a direct flight to Seattle. «Now with American and Alaska together, if you’re a great traveler in a city like that, now you have a complete network solution that you didn’t have before», said Vasu Raja.
