China Southern retires Superjumbo
China Southern Airlines deprograms Airbus A380
The Asian company, China Southern Airlines has announced the deprogramming of the Airbus A380 fleet. The Chinese airline leaves on the ground, severely affected by the restrictions, the five A380-800 aircraft (5). This weekend saw the last flight of the fifth of these aircraft in use. China Southern received its aircraft between 2011 and 2013. Two of the aircraft flew from the base in Guangzhou to Victorville, California (CA), United States, in February 2021, when the company began to see an uncertain future due to low demand. prolonged. The other three were in service flying for the company. The last flight with passengers was this weekend, between Los Angeles, in the United States, and Guangzhou.
The impact of the pandemic has changed the market for large aircraft, which has reduced long-range trips. China Southern, one of the companies that operates this plane, used it on a limited basis. But after two and a half years that the air transport crisis has had a strong impact, it has decided to withdraw the model definitively.
While other airlines such as British Airways, Air France or Lufthansa German Airlines are slowly returning to this model, observing that demand returns to the skies.
The A380 has various configuration possibilities. China Southern had opted for number of seats over comfort. Its planes had 506 seats, of which 428 are Economy.
The prolonged situation of confinement due to the Coronavirus crisis continues to generate delays in the growth of the Chinese air market, with confinements and closures of neighborhoods and cities, which keeps transport in a very complicated situation, without returning to normality. A stressed economy has prompted China Southern Airlines to scrap the air colossus for good, while it is unknown if the A380 model will fly again for another airline.
LATAM emerges from Chapter 11
LATAM Airlines Group officially emerges from bankruptcy
LATAM Airlines Group officially emerges from the Bankruptcy Law and the Restructuring Process. The last Latin airline to file for bankruptcy during the Coronavirus pandemic has officially exited bankruptcy protection. LATAM entered Chapter 11 reorganization in May 2020. Two other large Latin carriers, Aeroméxico and Avianca Airlines, were also forced to file for bankruptcy.
The LATAM Airlines group has just announced that it officially ended the Administration process on November 4, 2022 with a restructuring process, which it had voluntarily entered at the end of May 2020 when requesting, a few days after the company Colombian Avianca Airlines, the placement under Chapter 11 of the US bankruptcy law, which corresponds to the French receivership process and allows companies in difficulty that use it to protect themselves from creditors.
The South American airline group leaves the process with more than US$2.2 billion in cash and with a debt reduced by some US$3.6 billion compared to what it was before entering Chapter 11 protection, which is equivalent to a 35% debt reduction.
In October 2022, the group served 144 destinations in 22 countries, with subsidiaries operating in five domestic markets in the region: Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and international routes in Latin America, to Europe, the United States, the Caribbean and Africa soon, as LATAM Airlines will resume the São Paulo-Johannesburg route in mid-2023.
The group plans to close the year with a total of 85% of its capacity, compared to the level of capacity that was proposed in 2019, before the crisis. Delta Airlines is a 20% shareholder of the LATAM Airlines group since the end of September 2019. Subsequently, Delta Air Lines and LATAM Airlines established a joint venture that provides passengers with access to more than 300 destinations between the United States/Canada and South America: Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay. LATAM Airlines left the Oneworld alliance in May 2020, and would logically be an ideal candidate to join the SkyTeam alliance, gathered around Delta Air Lines and Air France-KLM.
LATAM Airlines has reached agreements with Airbus to acquire a total of 87 A320NEO Family aircraft by 2029, which are 20% more fuel efficient, while LATAM Cargo and its subsidiaries are in the midst of an expansion plan that will will allow their respective fleets to grow from a current total of eleven Boeing 767-300F aircraft (11) in 2019 to a total of twenty Boeing 767-300F aircraft (20) in 2024.

Aerolíneas Argentinas alcanzaría déficit de US$ 500 Millones 2022
Aerolíneas deficit US$ 500M 2022
Aerolíneas Argentinas will reach a deficit of US$ 500 million in 2022
The CEO of Aerolíneas Argentinas, Pablo Ceriani, has expressed the tentative economic results for the end of 2022. The head of the airline has stated: «We expect a deficit of between US$400 and US$ 500 million for this year». The final variables will depend on the final number determined by how the exchange rate and the price of fuel will end up, the two main factors that determine costs in the sector. The latest numbers of the company, corresponding to its activity in 2021, indicate that the firm lost US$ 438 million that year and that it demanded public transfers for AR$ 65,796 million Pesos.
Aerolíneas Argentinas has confirmed that the company will continue to have an operating deficit in 2023 and will continue to require transfers from the State to cover its deficit: “We expect a reduction of US$ 100 million less than this year’s numbers. Aerolíneas, like all companies in the sector, are limited to the recovery process after the pandemic, which has not yet been completed. We are close to doing it», said Pablo Ceriani, who said that this year the company will reach, in the segment of domestic flights, a number of passengers similar to that of 2019. «For international flights it will be at the end of the year that is coming, so by 2024 we are going to have the company recovered in terms of traffic compared to pre-pandemic volumes, but with higher levels of efficiency», said the company’s head at the Annual Seminar of the Argentine Association of Budget (ASAP).
The executive pointed out that the goal is always to reach a zero deficit, but that the process takes time and is also linked to the costs associated with the international value of fuels and the exchange rate. “It requires improving the infrastructure, the company’s services and improving the technology, for example, the purchase of an airplane takes two years. The business plans in the sector are for at least four or five years”, highlighted Pablo Ceriani.
According to the head of Aerolíneas, the budgeted plan for 2023 includes reaching 13 million passengers transported and exceeding the 2019 marks, although with a different combination than then. The executive announced that there will be a greater participation of cabotage trips. “They are practically recovered from pre-pandemic levels and we are going to be surpassing them now in the high summer season and a drop in international markets. In any case, although the regional and international segment has seen a slower recovery in terms of volume, in terms of rates they are doing quite well; then, they show levels of profitability. We are excited to see that there is growth in that market, with the tariff levels that exist now, and for now they maintain a profitability that is even higher than in cabotage. But what happens is that cabotage has a volume that is much higher”, explained Pablo Ceriani.
At the same time, the head of Aerolíneas said that the Argentine commercial airline market has infrastructure as its main limitation, but that both the state company, which concentrates 70% of the volume, and its competitors, have room to grow. “Today there is room. We are not reaching the peak of infrastructure and there is room for growth. The rates and profitability levels are reasonable, with which, just as low cost companies are growing, they should continue to do so without major problems”, said the CEO of Aerolíneas.
Aerolíneas debate by state
Aerolíneas Argentinas is one of the thirty-four public companies included in the National Non-Financial Public Sector and its case is usually the focus of debate due to the operating scheme of these companies, their role in their markets and their financing. “We have to remove the discussion of public companies from the crack. The discussion is to unprejudicedly analyze what the objective is, what public policy objective they attend to», economist Nicolás Gadano, who passed through YPF, was General Manager of the Central Bank and is co-author, along with Emilio Nastri, said at the ASAP Seminar of a sectoral report for the Congressional Budget Office (OPC). Nicolás Gadano affirmed that “a general rule that private companies are better and state companies are bad cannot be applied and they must all be fired. Equinor is one of the best oil companies in the world, it is doing offshore drilling with YPF and it is Norwegian state controlled. ENAP, from Chile, is very good. And I have seen very bad private oil companies and other very good, very efficient ones that are at the forefront”.
Nicolás Gadano stated that the role of state companies does differ from private firms in their function and role. “They have a responsibility to explain and discuss what their objective is, and if we can correctly measure and allocate the fiscal resources that are going to finance that policy, because if that discussion is not clear, it will always be confusing. Not only do you have to think about the objective, but why the public company is the best solution to meet that objective”, said the former Deputy Secretary of the Budget during the Government of the Alliance. To illustrate this scenario, he took the case of the Río Turbio Carboniferous Deposits. “It is a company that seeks to exploit coal integrated into a thermal power plant. And, ultimately, it seems to me that what is behind it is a problem of regional development”, said the analyst, noting the issue of employment and the development of the locality as a real problem. “But we have to see how it works, because from the point of view of energy development there is no objective: generating thermal energy with coal goes against all global trends, the environmental dimension and the commitments that Argentina assumes at the international level”, explained Nicolás Gadano.

Suriname SLM seeks its own plane
Surinam Airways finally wants its own plane again
The state airline Surinam Airways (SLM) has managed to extend the contract, and is negotiating new planes for its fleet. «60 years, we are grateful to have come this far», Surinam Airways posted a photo with these letters two months ago on the career network Linkedin. That didn’t sound very self-confident and far-sighted. The state airline of the South American country has reason to be cautious. It is struggling financially and has had to return its planes to leasing companies in recent years. Since the summer of 2021, Surinam Airways has been without its own planes.
Surinam Airways has reached the extension of its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) despite the economic difficulties that the Surinamese airline is going through. The airline from the former Dutch colony only maintains operations thanks to wet leasing partners. The important route from the capital Paramaribo to Amsterdam is operated by Maltese Airhub Airlines and its crews with an Airbus A330 on behalf of Surinam Airways.
Without its own aircraft, the airline was in danger of losing its Air Operator Certificate (AOC). But in mid-October 2022, according to local media, Surinam Airways announced that it had managed to extend its AOC Certificate.
Negotiations new aircraft
Surinam Airways also announced that it would repurchase its own aircraft. Consequently, it is negotiating with a United States leasing company on a Boeing 737-800 and with a Dubai company on a long-haul aircraft. The airline then wants to operate these planes itself again. In addition to the Amsterdam destination, the airline’s other destinations are Aruba, Belem in Brazil, Curaçao, Georgetown in Guyana, Port of Spain in Trinidad and Tobago and Miami in the United States.
Suriname SLM zoekt eigen vliegtuig
Surinam Airways wil eindelijk weer eigen vliegtuig

Trabajadores low cost argentina repudian convenio CLARA-APLA
The workers of the low cost airlines Flybondi Líneas Aéreas and JetSMART Airlines Argentina repudiated the signing of a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CCT) between the Association of Air Line Pilots (APLA) and the Chamber of Air Lines of the Argentine Republic (CLARA). ) that provides rights and obligations of the parties in terms of service provision, licenses, remuneration and compensation, among others. According to a joint statement from the Flybondi Aeronautical Workers Association (ATAF) and the JetSmart Workers Union Association (ASTJ), the agreement implies «one more step towards the destruction of labor sources in the aeronautical industry, whatever its origin or model», since it would grant powers to APLA above all legal order, to the point of constituting it as a negotiator with each employer company of absolutely all salary and benefit components.
“APLA has no representation among our pilots, because we know that it exclusively defends the interests of state companies, a box of permanent looting of state coffers and the Argentine people. Clara is a chamber to which low cost companies are not associated and, therefore, does not represent companies that do not subscribe to its statute; it only safeguards the interests of Aerolineas Argentinas and intends to impose guidelines on those who compete healthily, putting us all in the same place”, they assured from the low cost airline unions.
On the other hand, they said that Flybondi and JetSMART are the “only airline companies that survived the actions and permanent attempts of destruction by traditional unions and that private low cost companies cannot maintain the neoliberal luxuries of that union. Low cost workers feel ashamed of others and we do not want to be accomplices or part of a union that is sustained only by the state contribution of more than US$ 800 million a year, when there are so many unsatisfied essential demands in the population in general, with high rates of structural poverty. Without the resources of the taxpayers, of all the Argentine people, APLA would not exist”, they affirmed.
Lastly, they insisted that they maintain their self-determination to preserve their interests and said that they do not recognize any other representation imposed illegally and illegitimately. “From our unions ATAF and ASTJ we defend the interests of associated employees regardless of their hierarchy, with our own collective company agreements, without conditions and without embarking on delusional and totalitarian projects, which will eventually destroy our sources of work. It happened with Andes, exAvian, exSW, exAerovip, exDinar, exLapa, exLatam Argentina, etc. APLA was in all of them, defending Aerolineas Argentinas and not Argentine pilots”, they recalled.
“We have memory and we remember that they never represented us, they never defended us and the only thing they advocated was our destruction and exclusion from the industry and ultimately our sources of work. We have not forgotten either, because we witnessed the indolent and joyful attitude of APLA and other aeronautical unions before the closure of El Palomar”, they expressed, and said that they remain in a state of mobilization and alert.

Italy halts ITA Airways privatization
Interruption of exclusive sale to Certares by ITA Airways
The new Italian Government headed by the far-right Giorgia Meloni decided this Monday 10/31 to interrupt negotiations exclusively with the consortium formed by the US fund Certares and the US airlines Delta Air Lines and the French airline Air France to sell the airline ITA Airways, born from bankruptcy of Alitalia, and take time for a decision.
The new head of the Economy, Giancarlo Giorgietti, has announced the paralysis of the progress of the privatization at the end of the term of the exclusive negotiations with the Certares consortium, and in a note it was reported that «interlocutions continue for the definition of a possible transfer agreement of the airline», which opens a possibility to the other group that presented an offer, formed by the Italian-Swiss company MSC, the largest shipping company in the world, and the German Lufthansa German Airlines.
On August 31, 2022, just at the beginning of the exclusive negotiation with Certares, Giancarlo Giorgetti, then Minister of Economic Development of the Draghi Government, did not hide that the decision to choose the US fund took him by surprise, showing his concern because «this offer does not include an industrial partner, one of the fundamental pieces of the strategy, which would give a future for the Italian company and its workers”.
The Italian Treasury, the sole shareholder of ITA Airways, explained that it chose the offer led by the US fund as it considered it more in line with the objectives set by the decree of the Prime Minister, Mario Draghi for its sale. The offer of Certares-Delta-Air France could have been convinced by the fact that it left 45% of the shares to the Italian State and therefore greater control over the future of the company. Analysts also pointed out the rigidity of the MSC-Lufthansa offer in the distribution of shares, since the two wanted to get 80%, leaving 20% to the Italian Treasury. The offer presented by MSC and Lufthansa offered between € 850 and € 900 million Euros for an 80% stake, according to the financial daily Il Sole 24 ore. La Repubblica newspaper reported that the Certares consortium offered € 650 million for 55% of the airline, recognized an additional premium if ITA Airways achieves good financial results, and awarded the Treasury two out of five seats on the Board of Directors and the post of President.
The Italian media quote sources close to the operation as saying that Certares was working to quickly reach a binding and definitive offer.
In mid-October 2022, the Board of Directors of ITA Airways withdrew the powers from the Executive President, Alfredo Altavilla, including the task of negotiating the sale of the Italian state airline, transferring them to the CEO, Fabio Lazzerini, by denouncing that the leader was delaying its sale. The confrontation between the President and the Board of Directors of ITA Airways was transferred to the Courts after Alfredo Altavilla himself sued six members of the Board of Directors.
The ITA Airways Shareholders’ Meeting scheduled for November 8, 2022 will approve the capital increase of € 400 million Euros, the second tranche of the total financing of € 1,350 million Euros authorized by the European Union (EU).
ITA Airways was founded on November 11, 2020. The airline flies to more than sixty national, European and some scheduled intercontinental destinations, with a smaller structure than Alitalia had, with a fleet of 52 aircraft and around 3,000 employees, compared to 11,000 that the former Italian flag carrier had, and is looking for a potential industrial partner to boost its competitiveness in a sector that has been hit hard by the global health crisis.

Aerolíneas Argentinas would select Airbus A330NEO Studies incorporating additional Embraer E190-E2/Boeing 737 MAX
Aerolineas Argentinas plans a fleet renewal of regional aircraft, narrowbodies and widebodies as part of the wide-range fleet updates. In a rapidly growing post-pandemic Latin American market, the Argentine airline reports its fleet renewal plan.
Driven by strong growth, the General Manager of Aerolíneas Argentinas forecasts growth of around 20 percent for the peak season at the end of the year and another 10 percent for next year. «We don’t have enough planes to fly to all the destinations we used to fly to before the pandemic», explains CEO Pablo Ceriani. Therefore, the airline wishes to lease two additional Airbus A330-200 (2) to meet the increasing demand. Negotiations are at an early stage, as they seek to increase international frequencies. Currently, the A330-200 fleet is eight aircraft. Reaching ten units would allow all pre-pandemic destinations to be covered.
Fleet update
The two oldest A330-200 of Aerolíneas Argentinas will then be more than twenty years old. Leases with Aircastle will not be renewed after they expire at the end of 2023, says Pablo Ceriani. Therefore, the long-haul fleet will once again be made up of twelve A330s, as before the pandemic.
The widebodies aircraft fleet would begin to migrate to the Airbus A330-900NEO fleet, updating technological innovation and improving carbon footprint indices. The airline plans to incorporate four Airbus A330-900 (4) under the lease modality. Aerolíneas has not announced the acquisition plan, but it will depend on availability, but expects to add the A330NEO to the fleet by 2024 or 2025.
In addition, the airline is studying the replacement of the Embraer E190-E1 fleet belonging to the former company Austral Líneas Aéreas, later absorbed by Aerolíneas Argentinas. It currently operates twenty-six Embraer E190-100s (26), which it inherited from the former Austral subsidiary. They have an average age of about twelve years old.
The candidate to replace them would be the Embraer E190-E2, which would naturally reduce the cost of implementing new technology. But the Airbus A220 is also being looked at, according to the head of Aerolineas Argentinas. “But the chances are much better for the Embraer E2, mainly because of the drivers. The change could be very complicated”, says Pablo Ceriani. Aerolíneas Argentinas is currently in talks with Embraer to update the regional fleet.
At the same time, Aerolíneas Argentinas wants to acquire more Boeing 737 MAX. Leases for eight Boeing 737-700s (8) expire in 2025. These jets will be replaced by more 737 MAXs. Not only are the MAX 8 currently operated by the airline possible, but it is also being analyzed to incorporate the larger model Boeing 737-9 MAX.

China Southern scraps 737 MAX plans
China Southern scraps scheduled Boeing 737 MAX flights
After two weeks of anticipation of the return of the Boeing 737 MAX to the routes in the Republic of China, the airline China Southern Airlines has decided to cancel the programming of the start of operations. The decision to cancel also occurred on the day of the flights, raising serious questions about the reliability of the product in the country.
China Southern Airlines initially scheduled domestic flights with the Boeing 737-8 MAX between them from Baiyun-Guangzhou/CAN for the first time in more than three years. The aircraft was due to take off at 12:25 as flight CZ-3960 to land at Zhengzhou Xinzheng/CGO International Airport at 14:55 scheduled for October 30, 2022. A second flight was also scheduled for the aircraft type, which would operate as CZ-8724, leaving Guangzhou/CAN at 01:00 p.m. and arriving at Wuhan Tianhe/WUH International Airport at approximately 3:00 p.m., scheduled to take off on 10/30 to return the following day as flight CZ-8727. Cancellations of all flights have not been replaced by other types of aircraft.
The China Southern Airlines company is the largest air operator of the Boeing 737 MAX line, which is a real challenge for the return of the type of aircraft to Chinese aviation itself. The airline has not commented on the cancellations of the flights, but a line of reasoning could assume that it would be the approach of the inauguration of the flights of the aircraft of its own harvest, the COMAC C919 scheduled for its first official delivery in November 2022.
Aerial perspectives
Commercial flight operations starting so soon for the C919, use of the Boeing 737 MAX would become redundant as China tries to close the Airbus-Boeing duopoly. From the end of 2022 onwards, Chinese airlines will be able to use their Chinese flagship aircraft to strengthen their fleets for the future, which would seek to outshine the American Boeing 737 MAX.

IAG Group achieves profits
IAG posts economic profit 3Q2022
International Airlines Group (IAG), the group that owns British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus and Vueling, has achieved revenue in the third quarter of 2022 that exceeds pre-pandemic levels, despite capacity restrictions imposed in London Heathrow throughout the summer.
The CEO of the IAG Group, Luis Gallego, has communicated that all airlines are significantly profitable thanks to the restoration of the demand for leisure travel that has reached pre-pandemic levels and the sustained recovery of business travel. Passenger capacity from July to September 2022 was 81% of 2019 levels, up from 78% in the second quarter, largely driven by short-haul European travel and transatlantic flights to North America. Passenger throughput for the quarter was 23% higher than in 2019, with a load factor of 87%.
IAG Group has reported that revenue in the holiday category in the third quarter has fully recovered to pre-crisis levels, while commercial revenue stood at around 75% of 2019 figures, despite airport restrictions with traffic limitations, for example, 100,000 passengers per day at London/Heathrow/LHR Airport. “While demand remains strong, we are mindful of uncertainties in the economic outlook and ongoing pressures on households. The group is «focused on adapting our operations to meet demand», says Luis Gallego.
Perspectives
The aviation group expects its 2022 operating profit to be approximately €1.1bn, with total passenger capacity for the year down 78% against a backdrop of rising currency inflation and value fuel costs. Net debt is expected to increase later in the year, due to seasonal booking patterns and capital expenditures associated with aircraft deliveries in the fourth quarter of 2022.
