Bielorusia transgrede normas aviación

AW | 2021 05 24 15:10 | AVIATION SAFETY / GOVERNMENT / AIRLINES

Belarus violates aviation rules

Belarusian government diverts plane over language persecution

Flight FR-4978 of a Ryanair Sun Boeing 737-800 that developed the route Athens (Greece) to Vilnius (Lithuania) with capacity for 126 passengers and 6 crew members, was about 45nm south of Vilnius, still in the airspace of Belarus, when the plane was forced to divert to Minsk (Belarus), where the plane landed about 25 minutes later without major consequences. The plane stayed on the ground in Minsk for about 7 hours, then continued the flight with 5 fewer passengers than those who had arrived in Minsk, boarded FL090 en route and arrived in Vilnus with a delay of 08:50 hours.

The circumstances of the detour are not entirely clear. So far there is no official confirmation, not from Ryanair either. There are claims that Mig-29 fighter jets may have been dispatched to intercept and force the Boeing 737-800 to Minsk. The Belarusian opposition claims that one of its activists and his fiancée have been detained in Minsk, and four Russians did not continue their trip to Vilnius. Sources in Belarus claim that all the passengers continued to Vilnius. Other sources in Belarus and Russia claim that the opposition activist has been detained in Minsk. On May 24, 2021, the concrete information is that Roman Protasevich, 26, a Belarusian citizen and his friend/fiancée, a Russian citizen of his, were arrested in Minsk and could not continue their trip. In addition, three Russian citizens did not continue the trip to Vilnius. On May 24, 2021, the Lithuanian authorities reported that 126 passengers and 6 crew members were on board the plane, when it departed from Athens, but 121 passengers and 6 crew members were on board when the plane arrived in Vilnius.

This journalist is a close associate of the Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanóvskaya and like her, he fled Belarus. He is the co-founder of the Internet platform Telegram NEXTA, which covered the repression of mass protests in Belarus after the controversial re-election of President Alexander Lukashenko in August 2020. Some publications on social networks claim that Roman Protasevich had been declared a terrorist by the Belarusian authorities and could face the death penalty.

International repudiation

The international reaction has not lingered on the strong legal and political claim to such outrage by a government that has suppressed the freedoms of free air traffic. «We, like all European airlines, are seeking guidance today from the European authorities and NATO», said Ryanair Chief Executive Officer Michael O’Leary.

Others, including Chinese and Turkish airlines, continued to fly over Belarus, which charges euro-denominated fares to use its airspace. Each flight brings in Minsk revenue equivalent to about US$ 500, adding up to millions each year, a Belarusian official said. Some European airlines immediately began avoiding Belarusian airspace, a key corridor between Western Europe and Moscow and the route for long-haul flights between Eastern Europe and Asia.

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) said in a statement that it had notified its 31 member states of the incident and a source from the Irish low-cost airline said the agency had recommended caution over Belarus. Aviation experts said a decades-old cooperation system now faces a crucial test under the glare of East-West tensions.

The UN’s International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) said the incident may have contravened a core aviation treaty-part of the international order created after World War II. «ICAO is deeply concerned about the apparent forced landing of a Ryanair flight and its passengers, which could be in contravention of the Chicago Convention», said the international aviation body ICAO on Sunday 05/23. But experts warned that calls by some Western politicians for the complete closure of Belarusian airspace would run into difficult obstacles. ICAO expressed concern about the crash landing stating that this could be in contravention of the Chicago convention. Political leaders of the EU and its members express concern about this hard landing and call for action. Under current global aviation rules, neither ICAO nor any nation can close another’s airspace, but some, like the United States, have the power to tell their own airlines not to fly there. The United States said it had convened a meeting of the 36-nation ICAO council, which has the power to investigate any situation that hinders the development of international aviation. «It looks like a serious abuse of the Chicago Convention. It is piracy», Kevin Humphreys, a former Irish Aviation Regulator, said of the Belarus incident. «We strongly condemn any interference or requirement for the landing of civil aviation operations that is incompatible with the rules of international law», said the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

The President of the European Commission (EC) said: «It is totally unacceptable to force Ryanair to fly from Athens to Vilnius to land in Minsk. All passengers must be able to continue their journey to Vilnius immediately and their safety guaranteed. Any violation of the regulations international air transport must have consequences». In another statement he added: «The scandalous and illegal behavior of the regime in Belarus will have consequences. Those responsible for the kidnapping of Ryanair must be punished. Journalist Roman Protasevich must be released immediately». Global airlines called for an investigation, backed by the European Union (EU).

The Greek Foreign Minister described the occurrence as a hijacking of States, the plane has been hijacked by Belarus. According to the Greek Foreign Ministry, 171 passengers departed from Athens. The Greek Foreign Ministry further stated: «We condemn the illegal detention of Belarusian activist Roman Protasevich, who is threatened with the death penalty. Mr. Protasevich was part of a delegation led by Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, who recently attended to the Delphi Forum». The Lithuanian Prime Minister said: «What happened today is an attack not only against Lithuania. This is the act of state terrorism directed against the security of EU citizens and other countries».

The President of Lithuania, Gitanas Nauseda, demanded, for his part, the immediate release of Roman Protasevich. There have been conflicting reports as to why the plane, which was flying in Belarusian airspace and minutes from the Lithuanian border, was diverted to Minsk instead of proceeding to the Lithuanian capital, which was about the same distance.

A Belarusian opposition source wrote on social media that the airliner had been boarded by a Belarusian Mig-29 fighter and essentially forced down. Flight tracking websites that tracked the progress of the Ryanair plane showed it turning sharply just before Lithuania’s airspace and landing, towards Minsk. Other reports said that the Ryanair flight crew had been informed of a bomb threat on the plane. Air travel industry website onemileatatime.com said that although Ryanair’s crew had dismissed the bomb threat report, they had been forced to land in Minsk. A Vilnius Airport spokesman said that Minsk Airport had informed them that the flight had been diverted to Belarus due to an unspecified conflict between the plane’s crew and passengers. Ryanair flight FR-4978, according to the same source, which was scheduled to land in Vilnius at 01:00 p.m. local time, would have been cleared to leave Minsk and would arrive in the Lithuanian capital around 05:30 p.m. local time.

Boeing 737 MAX asoma en horizonte

AW | 2021 05 24 01:47 | INDUSTRY / AIRLINES

Ryanair busca próximo acuerdo por 100 Boeing 737 MAX

Boeing 737 MAX_Isologotype

Boeing_Isologotype

Boeing 737 MAX looms horizon

Ryanair seeks next deal for 100 Boeing 737 MAX

AW-73710010

Boeing_Isologotype_Blue

The latest Boeing 737 MAX crisis seeks to ease itself after continuing to achieve its operational safety outlook. Aircraft maker The Boeing Company is resuming 737 MAX deliveries after the latest hiatus, but Boeing is not yet out of the commercial aviation market scene.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) finally recertified the Boeing 737 MAX around November 2020 for commercial service, after a twenty-month grounding. This allowed Boeing to resume deliveries of the 737 MAX line in December 2020 in a crucial step towards the final return to positive cash flow from the aerospace company. Meanwhile, within a few months, Boeing had new problems with its most popular aircraft, forcing it to pause 737 MAX deliveries in early April 2021. Customers also had to take more than 100 aircraft out of service. Fortunately, Boeing has resumed 737 MAX deliveries, fixing the issues, and customers are quickly getting their planes back into service. The latest 737 MAX issue was due to a trivial change in the manufacturing process for two cabinets or racks that hold electronic equipment on the MAX flight deck. The decision to prime after the holes were fully drilled rather than before hampered the racks’ ability to serve as an electrical grounding path. This oversight never caused any problems for the 737 MAX aircraft in service. However, the FAA ordered the airlines to land all affected aircraft, because the electrical problem could have had catastrophic consequences under certain conditions such as under adverse weather conditions with electrical activities. Despite the simple nature of the problem, it took Boeing more than a month to develop and receive FAA approval for a solution. The FAA signed the company’s solution on 05/13. That allowed Boeing to begin fixing the roughly 350 affected 737 MAX aircraft in its inventory and to issue a service bulletin to its airline customers so they could make the same repairs. The US airlines that faced the biggest impacts of the last 737 MAXs on the ground have fixed most of their planes. Meanwhile, Boeing resumed the 737 MAX on May 18, 2021.

Compensation

To correct the latest 737 MAX defect, mechanics are adding new ground wires to ensure the electronic racks remain properly grounded. It is a fairly quick and cheap solution. However, while Boeing’s direct costs should be negligible, the aircraft manufacturer may have added customer compensation to its bill. For example, customers like American Airlines were forced to withdraw large portions of their 737 MAX fleets from service with little warning, increasing their costs.

Market 737 MAX

The long hiatus in deliveries means Boeing will have to scramble to get new customers for the 737 MAX that were scheduled for delivery before the summer season. At Ryanair airline, CEO Michael O’Leary recently sued Boeing for the latest delay, jeopardizing the budget airline’s DST. In short, Boeing continues to anger important customers. To smooth things over, you will likely have to cover any increased costs or lost revenue associated with the latest round of aircraft delivery and grounding delays. This setback also gives Chinese regulators another potential reason to delay the recertification of the 737 MAX. The additional delays in that recertification process may represent the biggest cost of all for Boeing, as its best-selling product is currently locked out of one of the largest and fastest growing aviation markets in the world.

Boeing cannot get off its own flight. The demand for air travel has already fully recovered in China. The US domestic market is rapidly following in the footsteps of China. Reduced slower vaccine deployments and increased reliance on cross-border travel have negatively affected recoveries in other key markets, but these temporary headwinds should dissipate in a year or two.

Despite the failures during these difficult years, the builder could receive a breath of encouragement in its order book soon with a hundred units from the Irish low-cost Ryanair Holding Plc seeking to reach an agreement before the end of the year for a hundred of Boeing 737-10 MAX (100) towards first deliveries in 2026, said Michael O’Leary.

Perspective 737 MAX

All the building blocks at the FAL in Everett (WA) are in place for a recovery in demand for commercial aircraft, chasing modest 2018-2019 levels, but well above current levels. As Boeing continues to recover, Airbus Group has developed a massive opportunity to gain market share, particularly for narrowdodies aircraft. Boeing will need to correct its operations and engineering with a prospect of full recovery in the near future.

Airbus impulsaría línea A220

AW | 2021 05 22 17:05 | INDUSTRY / AIRLINES

Airbus impulsará mayor rango operativo A220

AW-A220-Icon

Airbus would boost line A220

Airbus to boost A220 operating range

AW-A220

Airbus Group would continue with the project to increase the range of its A220 regional aircraft that will allow airlines to open more niche routes internationally. Airline entrepreneur David Neeleman said last month that he was discussing adding additional resistance to the jetliner with Airbus, which took over the Canadian-designed program in 2018. Speaking this Friday 05/21 when launching its latest company, US startup Breeze Airways David Neeleman said that the decision to offer the long-range aircraft is strongly supported by the European manufacturer for its launch. «We are always working with our customers and listening to their fleet needs, and we do not comment on the status of our confidential discussions», said an Airbus Group spokeswoman.

Upgrading the regional jet would require an additional fuel tank, meaning Airbus would also have to increase the plane’s maximum takeoff weight and improve performance. Airbus has already announced some increases in that metric. CEO David Beeleman: «We need to go up to 4,000 nautical miles». The A220-300 currently flies about 3,400 nm/ 6,300 km.

Breeze Airways has ordered some sixty A220 aircraft configured for 130 seats, located in the market between the Embraer E-Jets and the larger Boeing 737-7 MAX. Airbus reported the order without disclosing the buyer’s name, but industry sources have linked it to Breeze, potentially making it the second-largest customer for the A220.

Breeze, which aims to link underserved American cities, will take delivery of the A220 starting in October 2021 and will employ the aircraft on routes of two hours or more, eventually including international markets. For shorter trips, it will use older Embraer 190/195 aircraft inherited from the Brazilian airline Azul Linhas Aereas, accelerating additions to the new US startup, while Azul Linhas Aéreas will accelerate deliveries of the latest Embraer E2 model to its fleet.

Breeze’s mixed fleet differs from the strategy of most budget carriers, who use one rate to cut expenses, but David Neeleman denied that this put Breeze Airways at a disadvantage, saying that any small cost increases would be offset by the ability to open dozens of additional routes in the American domestic market.

Air India ciberataque afectó 4,5 M. pax

AW | 2021 05 22 16:26 | AIRLINES / AVIATION SAFETY

Air India sufre filtración de datos de Febrero 2021

Air_India.svg

Air India cyber attack affected 4.5 M. pax

Air India suffers data breach from February 2021

Personal data of some 4.5 million Air India passengers was leaked in a cyber attack against the airline’s data processor, but the compromised servers were later secured, the Indian state airline said in a statement. The debt-laden airline, a member of the global consortium of airlines Star Alliance, said the breach involved personal data, such as name, contact, passport, ticket and credit card details, recorded between August 2011 and February 2021. Not known passwords were affected.

Air India’s data processor, SITA PSS (Passenger Service System), had in recent months informed the airline about a cyberattack it faced in February, after which the Indian airline investigated the matter and secured compromised servers. «Our data processor (SITA) has ensured that no abnormal activity was observed after securing the compromised servers», the airline said late on Friday 05/21. For Air India, the gap is the latest headache at a time when it is trying to curb costs as the government seeks to sell its stake in the company. The airline is also embroiled in a legal battle with the British firm Cairn Energy with pressure on the Indian government to pay an arbitration award of US$ 1.2 billion that Cairn was awarded by an arbitration court in December 2020.

SITA, which serves the Star Alliance, had said in March 2021 that it had faced a highly sophisticated cyberattack after which it initiated containment measures. It was not immediately clear if other airlines were affected by the incident that SITA reported, while the matter remains under active investigation by SITA. Other major cyber incidents in the recent past include easyJet, which last year said hackers had accessed the email and travel details of around 9 million customers.

Condor Airlines recibe capitalización

AW | 2021 05 22 15:48 | AIRLINES / GOVERNMENT

Attestor Capital invierte en compañía vacacional alemana

AW-Condor Airlines_0005

AW-Condor Airlines_Isologotype

Condor Airlines receives capitalization

Attestor Capital invests in German vacation company

AW-Condor Airlines_0004

The German vacation airline Condor Airlines has received the support of the State and has communicated a new majority owner to face the economic difficulties that the airline is going through. London-based asset management company Attestor Capital will take 51 percent of the shares and invest heavily in the company. Attestor will contribute € 450 million of fresh capital, of which € 250 million will be converted into a new long-haul fleet. The 4,050 jobs of the airline will be preserved.

The Federal Republic of Germany and the State of Hesse want to support the new beginning by waiving the repayment of € 150 million Euros of the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) loan of € 550 million Euros, with which Cóndor has so far been in the air. Like competition law issues, this is subject to the approval of the European Union (EU).

Condor Airlines, with a history of 65 years, had experienced difficulties for several periods, after the bankruptcy of its former associate company Thomas Cook in 2019 and the subsequent upheaval of the airline in the current health crisis. After the withdrawal of the Polish investor PGL, Cóndor was extensively restructured in 2020 in an extended protective shield process. After emerging from bankruptcy in December, the owner was a trust company that pledged all its shares to state-owned KfW, which will initially remain a minority shareholder of Cóndor with 49 percent. Attestor Capital also intends to take over these shares.

Condor was rebuilt under the protective umbrella and reduced costs. The number of employees was reduced from around 8,000 to 4050 today. Cóndor’s fleet last consisted of about 50 aircraft. The aging long-distance fleet must be renewed as soon as possible. With the announced capital of € 250 million Euros, aircraft worth around € 1 billion could be financed. The company has moved its headquarters from Frankfurt Airport to a more affordable property in nearby Neu-Isenburg and intends to offer a more extensive flight program again this summer.

Condor Airlines erhält kapitalisierung

Attestor Capital investiert in ein deutsches Ferienunternehmen

AW-Condor Airlines_Isotype-001

Airlines request reopening Canada

Airlines request Canadian government to reopen borders

AW-78000121

The Canadian airlines asked the Government to adopt a strategy based on science to allow the reopening of borders and therefore the return of flights to this country and allow the economic recovery of the airline industry. Mike McNaney, a member of the National Airline Council of Canada, said the country should follow the example of the European Union, which recently announced a plan to reopen borders to allow the entry of vaccinated travelers to the 27 nations that make up the bloc. Likewise, Mike McNaney pointed out that the Government of Canada should develop a similar plan, based on what the science says, and that it should announce when it intends to adjust or eliminate travel restrictions for people who have already received inoculation against COVID-19, following the steps of other countries worldwide.

Currently, Canadian airlines are operating at a minimum, and even some are not doing so as is the case with Air Transat, due to severe government restrictions in the country that limit mobility. Recently, the G7 countries, including Canada, agreed that the reactivation of international flights after the pandemic will require coordinated work in conducting covid-19 detection tests and recognition of passengers who have been vaccinated, the Ministry said. of Transport of Canada, in charge of Omar Alghabra.
