Brazil’s government will allow airlines to collect luggage

As it was considered in December 2016, the Brazilian airlines could charge for the hold baggage in their aircraft

According to the ANAC, airlines will be able to reduce the volume that each passenger can carry free of charge and, with less heavy aircraft, offer lower-fare tickets in compensation.

Airlines claim that passengers traveling without luggage have to pay more to compensate for the weight carried by those who carry suitcases.

Another of the measures raises from 5 to 10 kilos the maximum weight that each passenger can carry by hand in the airplane.

The ANAC also reduced to seven days the maximum term that each airline has to return lost luggage in case of domestic flights and 21 days in the international ones.

In case they do not meet this deadline, the airline will have a maximum of one week to compensate the passenger who lost their luggage.

The measures of the Brazilian government will take effect as of March 14

It will be one of the many measures that will take effect as of March 14, 2017 and one of them will be to charge for the suitcase that is transported in the warehouse. As of now airlines will not have to offer for free, since they will have the freedom to put a cost to service. Usually the passengers could carry a luggage of up to 23 kilos of weight in the national flights and about 32 kilos in international flights.

More weight in luggage

The passengers will be able to carry only a luggage with a total weight of 10 kilos, something that will benefit them much since up to now the maximum weight they could carry was 5 kilos. It is an interesting measure so that the luggage of many tourists is not a problem and have the possibility to carry something more weight when traveling.

When an airline loses a passenger’s bag, compensation must be offered before 21 days in the case of international flights, while for flights within Brazil it will take 7 days for tourists who have lost their luggage to receive such compensation .

They are measures that will allow airlines to have a line of work in relation to luggage, the weight of it. It will also allow passengers to have a series of changes that in good measure will be beneficial for them as there will be greater competitiveness among airlines to offer a better service.

Although the measure is compensatory as claimed by the Brazilian government, the repercussions that could result could generate abuses towards the passengers. A\W

American Airlines y sus planes de expansión

AW | 2017 01 10 08:20 | AIRLINES

American Airlines and its expansion plans

In the third quarter of 2016, profits of American Airlines, one of the largest companies in the world, exceeded US $ 4 billion. This year, the company plans to keep pace with growth and expand into new markets.

The American Airlines Country Manager for Peru and Bolivia, Santiago Motta, told El Comercio that in order to improve the travel experience of its customers, they will invest more than US $ 3 billion. «These investments include a new product: Premium Ecomnomy, available on the 7879 Dreamliner,» he said.

Inversión y renovación flota en BoA

AW | 2017 01 08 18:26 | AIRLINES

Investment and renewal fleet in BoA

BoA will invest US $ 15 million in the renovation of aircraft and continues without its own hangar. The state airline registered a 20% growth in 2016, however it does not have its own hangar

Bolivian state-owned Aviation Authority (BOA) will invest $ 15 million in 2017 to buy new aircraft. Of the 22 aircraft that counts, 20 are operating and two in reserve. The airline was created nine years ago with two own airplanes, today it owns six, the rest is under different types of contracts.

«Many people are aware that BOA in recent years has made a construction of an airline with 15 million dollars … Going from two planes to 22 planes with profitability, with social contributions, with very high social responsibility is not a simple task « BOA CEO Ronald Casso told ANF.

According to the manager of BOA it is evident that in the last three years there were heavy investments in airports, nevertheless emphasized that they are not enough. «You will see that in La Paz we arrive with the planes and we do not have where to park them, we have to wait for 25 to 30 minutes with passengers to be able to access a space, so the airport infrastructure has a very marked lag in relation to the growth of the market» .

Of its own aircraft, it said that two are 767 long range, another two are model 737 medium range and two small. «The other (aircraft) have different contracts, in some cases there is the option to buy at the end of the contract that the decision will be made at the end. We have a diverse fleet that goes from 1994 forward,» he said.

The 767 will be renewed on regular flights to Madrid, Spain and Miami, United States, as well as the average 737.

Growth of 20%

State-owned BOA with 130 daily flights, between national and international and an average daily flow of 14 thousand passengers, registered a 20% growth in 2016. «We have entered this high season that we have not felt the jump of the operation or not of the TAM, we have projected a growth this year that we have been holding annually of the 20 percent,» he assured.

Asked how much profit this growth translated, he replied that he does not yet have final data, but that income reached last year 1.8 billion Bolivians.

Maintenance outdoors

He also acknowledged that BOA does not have its own hangar where to carry out the maintenance of the aircraft, which forces the airline to take the aircraft abroad.

«We do maintenance on different levels, there is maintenance that we do with the daily services and the rest of the hangar services we do abroad, we do not rent in Bolivia, we do maintenance in Brazil, Costa Rica, Panama and the United States, all these Hangars must be certified under maintenance standards,» he said.

Casso said that among the airline’s plans is to build an international maintenance center, but also to make regular flights to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic and Havana, Cuba, destinations where BOA arrives on non-scheduled flights. But it is also intended to reopen flights to Lima, Peru.

In the wake of the wave of criticism of the passengers, which included the assembly of MAS and ministers of state, due to the delay in flights and even the arrival of the baggage much later, the BOA manager blamed These mishaps to climate change, limited airport infrastructure and insufficient staff at both Migration and Special Anti-Drug Trafficking (FELCN) airports. A\W

Cancellation 48 flights British Airways

British Airways strike: Almost 50 Heathrow flights expected to be cancelled in cabin crew walkout

Almost 50 British Airways flights will reportedly be grounded during a planned cabin crew strike following a row over “poverty pay”.

The carrier assured passengers on Friday that they would be able to reach their destinations despite the two-day strike.

But according to The Times up to 48 flights are expected to be cancelled from Heathrow during the walkout, meaning passengers will be forced to travel at different times.

A BA statement released on Friday said most flights from Heathrow would operate as normal but some would be “merged”.

The airline said this would mean some customers would be rebooked on flights departing at different times to their original booking.

The disruption will mainly affect flights to Europe. All flights to-and-from Gatwick, Stansted and London City airports will operate as normal. A\W

Surinam Airways quiere expandirse

Surinam Airways CEO’s bold vision: Expansion of the Guyana hub to NYC and Havana

PARAMARIBO, SURINAM · Surinam Airways (SLM) was out of the red and made a profit during the period when Robbi Lachmising was CEO. He was reappointed CEO of the company last year. Sitting in his office on a bright sunny day in the tropics, Lachmising outlined his vision for the airline, which includes improvement of services, fleet renewal and partnership with other carriers.

And while he spoke modestly about route expansion, Lachmising is keen in getting SLM out of the red, but he is also ambitious to expand SLM’s Guyana hub from its current three destinations – Miami, Orlando and Paramaribo – to five. Two destinations on his radar are Havana and New York City via Guyana.

According to Lachmising, the aviation industry in Guyana will grow and the Georgetown hub will continue to expand, especially now that Guyana will soon be a major oil producing country.

Government Support

SLM will approach the government of Suriname to help finance its fleet renewal. Another major need of the airline from the government is help in securing air agreements and partnership with other carriers. As the national carrier of Suriname, SLM argues that with the support of the government and, in particular, the ministry of transportation and tourism and foreign affairs, the national carrier can grow.

Suriname is very much behind in securing air agreements with some important countries such as Ghana, the UAE, Turkey, Cuba and Panama. Its air agreement with Colombia is very restrictive and experts have suggested that it should be renegotiated.

Partnership

Decades ago, Caribbean Airlines (CAL) and Air Jamaica turned SLM away when it sought partnership with those carriers. Today, Air Jamaica doesn’t exist and CAL is still in the red. SLM later entered some agreements with an Antillean carrier and KLM. Today, one of the major goals of SLM is to forge partnerships with other airlines.

TUIfly

In a major development last week, SLM and the European carrier, TUIfly, announced a code-sharing partnership. The two carriers will fly five-times weekly between Amsterdam and Paramaribo. Four of those flights will be operated by SLM and one by TUIfly using SLM’s Airbus 340 and TUIfly’s Boeing 787 Dreamliner. However, during peak season TUI will increase its frequency to two.

Under the agreement, TUI will buy 80 seats each on two of SLM flights. The agreement has a life of three years. Then both companies will evaluate the partnership, and maybe move to a stronger agreement like what SLM had with KLM, Lachmising said. Also, TUI will charter SLM’s Airbus 340 to use on other routes.

TUIfly, with a fleet of nine aircraft, including three Dreamliner 787s, may enable SLM to move in the direction of twin-engine aircraft (ETOPS) certification to ply the mid-Atlantic route. With ETOPS certification, SLM can use modern and cost efficient aircraft such as the Boeing 767 / 787 and the Airbus 330 / 350.

Turkish Airlines/OIC

The government of Suriname is seeking an air agreement with Turkish Airlines and the foreign ministers of both countries met in Istanbul in 2016. The foreign minister of Suriname, Niermala Badrising, delivered a proposal to her Turkish counterpart. Since then, the two companies met in Miami last year. However, there has been no movement in negotiations. SLM is waiting on Turkish Airlines for a follow up meeting.

There is a need for government intervention and a starting point for an initial agreement between SLM and Turkish Airlines may fall under Suriname’s membership in the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), an organ of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). Turkish Airlines and Islamic Bank signed an MOU in which the Turkish Airlines will provide “aviation training” to members of the bank.

Fleet Renewal and Route Expansion: Georgetown Hub

SLM is looking to incorporate two to three new aircraft to replace the three aging Boeing 737-300s currently in its fleet and that depends on the government of Suriname concluding air agreements with countries such as Guyana and Cuba. SLM is seeking fifth freedom rights to carry passengers between Guyana and Havana and between New York City and Georgetown. These are some of the factors that will affect the choice of aircraft renewal and route expansion, according to Lachmising.

“Guyana doesn’t have a national carrier, and we would like to be the flag carrier of Guyana,” Lachmising said.

SLM’s Guyana load factor has increased by 65% since it returned to Georgetown in 2012. SLM was solicited to return to Guyana by the previous administration after Delta abruptly left Guyana. The government of Guyana at that time had no issue allowing SLM fifth freedom rights to any destination of its choice from Georgetown. More specifically, Guyana has been calling on SLM to add New York to its network.

Product Improvement

Lachmising wants to improve the airline’s “product” across the board, from ground handling, customer and inflight services. Just recently, SLM improved its inflight entertainment system on the mid-Atlantic routes by offering the latest American and Hollywood movies.

The airline has already earned a good name for its fine inflight services. Its meal service is one of the best offered by any Caribbean based airlines. Its meal and beverage services surpass Caribbean Airlines (CAL) which basically serves a processed turkey and cheese sandwich wrapped in plastic and, when heated to be served, looks really unattractive. This is served to Guyanese passengers travelling from New York to Georgetown. Guyanese passengers contribute to the bulk of CAL’s revenue. A\W

Fly Allways cesará sus operaciones

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/81/Fly_All_Ways_Fokker_F70_at_Paramaribo_Airport.jpg

AW | 2017 01 06 12:07 | AIRLINES

Fly Allways Suriname to cease operations on January 15

PARAMARIBO, Suriname · According to reliable sources, the owners of the Suriname airline Fly Allways will cease operation of the airline on January 15 of this year.

Fly Allways officially started operations about a year ago on January 10, 2016, with the launch of its inaugural domestic flight. Its first commercial flight took place on January 22, 2016, to Barbados. Later in February 2016 first flights followed to Curacao and St Maarten.

Following years of setback towards certification to fly, with creditors awaiting payments, poor payloads, and one of its two Fokker 70 aircraft being used as a source of spare parts to keep the other one flying, Fly Allways has been facing an alarming financial future.

The airline’s financial situation did not reportedly allow the carrier to keep its second aircraft flying.

“Fly Allways request for an extension of maintenance time on major components of its aircraft such as the overhaul of the landing gear was not approved by the aviation authority of Suriname,” said a source. “This has led to the grounding of one aircraft, which is now being used as a source for parts of their sole flying Fokker 70.”

The closest place in the Caribbean where the Fokker can be serviced is Curacao; however, there were unconfirmed reports that neither of the two Fokkers went to Curacao for maintenance.

“After two years of sitting in Suriname, the two Fokkers haven’t been to a maintenance hangar. Fly Allways still does not have an approved maintenance base,” the source said.

“The load factor between Suriname, Guyana and Barbados is below 30 percent. Between Barbados and Guyana an average of 20 seats are occupied. Plans to commence service to Haiti have been cancelled,” confirmed a second source.

Just last month Fly Allways was granted a permit to operate scheduled flights between Guyana, Barbados and Suriname to Antigua, where it customarily stopped for refueling on its way to Haiti. A\W
