RAM cancela orden Boeing 737 MAX

AW | 2022 07 15 23:30 | AIRLINES / INDUSTRY

Royal Air Maroc cancela pedido de aviones Boeing 737

Logo_Royal_Air_Maroc.svg

Royal Air Maroc cancels order for Boeing 737 planes

AW-Boeing_737_MAX_Isologotype

Royal Air Maroc (RAM) has announced the cancellation of two Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft (2). Currently, the Moroccan airline operates two Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft that it received in 2018 and 2019. Since Royal Air Maroc has canceled the order, the two MAX aircraft will be retired and will join the fleet of the Icelandic company, Icelandair. Royal Air Maroc will launch a tender shortly to renew its Boeing 737 Next Generation fleet, eliminating its company’s 737 line to be replaced by another type of narrowbody aircraft.

The goal of the Moroccan airline is to renew its fleet of 737 Next Generation aircraft from 2023, according to the President and CEO, Abdelhamid Addou. But the recent decisions taken by the management suggest that Royal Air Maroc would target the European manufacturer as the winner of the arm wrestling match to form the company’s future core fleet of aircraft. Since the incorporation in February 1976 with the first Boeing 737-200, a long history began that would unite Boeing with Royal Air Maroc. After forty-six years, the Moroccan airline could be concluding decades of history as a client of the American manufacturer with the model of the 737 line.

American aircraft manufacturer The Boeing Company faced backlash for its updated 737 MAX model. On March 10, 2019, a Boeing 737-8 MAX operated by the Ethiopian airline Ethiopian Airlines crashed, killing all 157 passengers on board and causing the planes of the same model to be grounded pending investigation. This had been the second air accident after the crash on October 29, 2018 of Lion Air flight JT-610 in the Java Sea, Indonesia. Despite the tragic accidents, the Ethiopian airline continued with the 737 MAX line and has recently ordered the same model in June 2022, three years after the deadly accident.

Boeing has recently reported that demand for the model is recovering, noting that June 2022 has been the month with the most deliveries of the 737 MAX (51) since its return to the air at the end of 2020.

AW-Boeing 737 MAX_Isologotype circular_002

AW | 2022 07 15 19:00 | AIRLINES / AWARDS

Aerolíneas Argentinas was recognized three times by the SkyTeam Alliance. In addition, he was a finalist in two other categories. The recognitions were within the framework of the initiative «The Sustainable Flight Challenge», which was carried out by the airline alliance. Together with fifteen Skyteam member airlines, 22 flights were carried out with more than 700 unique innovations that allowed CO2 emissions to be reduced by up to 15%.

The Argentine company won three awards and finished as a finalist in two others:

Reduction of long-haul CO2 emissions: Aerolíneas Argentinas introduced modifications in the loading process and occupation of the warehouses, making it more efficient and reducing consumption per transported ton. Also, the reductions in consumption are directly related to its Fuel Efficiency Program (PEC), which monitors and analyzes the way in which fuel is used in flight. And the concept of «Free Route Airspace» (FRA) has to do with a navigation system with different points of entry and exit of airspaces in order to fly direct and improve the flight path based on the shortest distance.

Innovation in Freight: the Freight sector incorporated new lighter pallets that weigh 101 kg, against the 130 kg that the previous ones weighed.

The jury of the international consultancy firm Bain&Co valued the direct impact that the reduction in weight has on CO2 emissions and the potential for implementation throughout the flight network. Also, the company was a finalist in the categories of «Reduction of CO2 emissions in medium-haul flights» and «Reduction of CO2 emissions in short-haul flights».

The President of Aerolíneas Argentinas, Pablo Ceriani, said that «this type of recognition reflects the excellent professional level that we have in Aerolíneas Argentinas and the existing commitment to international conventions, the environment and innovations in the field of sustainability».

“The Sustainable Flight Challenge” is a friendly competition in which 16 of the 18 airlines that make up the SkyTeam alliance participated. Its objective is to carry out innovations in flights that allow them to be carried out in a sustainable and friendlier way with the environment.

In total, there were 14 initiatives/categories, all related to the improvement of processes associated with the reduction of the carbon footprint and polluting materials. Spirit Airlines lanza FlytLIVE

AW | 2022 07 14 12:28 | AIRLINES / AVIATION TECHNOLOGY

Spirit Airlines lanza el nuevo servicio conectividad a bordo FlytLIVE

Spirit Airlines_Banner-001

Spirit Airlines launches FlytLIVE

Spirit Airlines launches new FlytLIVE inflight connectivity service

Spirit Airlines has begun providing inflight Internet services to its passengers on most of its flights operated by Airbus A320 and A321, according to an announcement on July 13, 2022. The deployment of In-Flight Connectivity (IFC) by Spirit comes after several years of service launch delays, with former Miramar, Florida (FL-based) low-cost carrier Ted Christie initially targeting mid-2019. To date, passengers now have the ability to connect to Spirit’s IFC service using Thales’ «FlytLIVE» cabin portal, which the Toulouse, France-based company describes as a platform that supports full internet services including streaming video, games, social networks and live television for passengers.

The service is currently active on all aircraft in Spirit’s A320 and A321 fleet, with expansion of its A319 fleet expected to occur at a future date yet to be determined. According to Thales, FlytLIVE is enabled by a set of strategic agreements first established with satellite operators SES and Hughes Network Systems in 2017. Under the agreements, SES contracts with Hughes for service on the EchoStar XVII and EchoStar XIX HTS satellites and combines them with its AMC-15 and AMC-16 satellites to provide the four-satellite network that initially enables connectivity for Spirit passengers.

A fifth satellite, SES-17, was confirmed operational by the UK-based operator on 06/16. SES-17 is a High Throughput System (HTS) geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) satellite, the first operated by SES to feature a fully digital payload. It features 200 spot beams that can be dynamically adjusted and aligned with changing customer needs.

«This is a truly groundbreaking time in the industry as Spirit adds inflight services and product options previously unavailable on ultra-low-fare carriers», said Matt Klein, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, Spirit Airlines.

In a separate press release announcing the availability of the new service, Thales states that FlytLIVE will offer ultra-high speeds of up to 400 Mbps to Spirit aircraft. FlytLIVE service will initially be available on most Spirit-operated routes, with the exception of select routes in the Caribbean islands, as well as Central and South America. However, once FlytLIVE connects to the SES-17 satellite, the service is expected to expand to all Spirit-operated routes. «The system’s reliability and performance are receiving rave reviews from Spirit passengers who can now stream to their hearts’ content», said TK Kallenbach, CEO of Thales InFlyt Experience.

Matt Klein, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer of Spirit Airlines, commenting on the launch date for satellite connectivity introduced on passenger-carrying flights, calls it a «groundbreaking moment in the industry as Spirit adds services to board and product options previously unavailable on ultra-low fare airlines».

Spirit Airlines now joins Southwest Airlines, JetBlue Airways and Breeze Airways as the only US-based low-cost carriers to provide in-flight internet service. Avelo Airlines, the low-cost airline with operating headquarters in California (CA) launched in 2021, which will eventually equip its fleet with IFC. A Frontier Airlines representative has said the weight and cost of the equipment prevents them from investing in IFC, while Allegiant Airlines and Sun Country Airlines have remained open to the possibility of eventually connecting their passengers to the Internet in flight.

British/Lufthansa cancelaciones masivas

AW | 2022 07 14 11:10 | AIR TRAFFIC / AIRLINES / AIRPORTS

British/Lufthansa mass cancellations

Flight cancellations continue in Europe

Thousands of flights continue to be canceled amid the lack of employees in Europe with Lufthansa German Airlines and British Airways with large suspensions in their service networks putting in check the network of flights in the United Kingdom and Germany. The German company has canceled more than 5,000 flights, while the English company has reduced its schedule by 10,300 departures.

The wave of cancellations in the big European airlines threatens the European summer holidays. Lufthansa Airlines is studying suspending sales for the remainder of July 2022 as it cannot meet the high level of demand. It should be remembered that, between July and August, the company has been forced to ground more than 5,000 flights, which add up to the 770 connections suspended throughout this week. In the case of British Airways, it continues to suffer from the chaos in London/Heathrow, which recently announced that until September 11, 2022 it has made the difficult decision to introduce a limit on its capacity of 100,000 daily departures. He also asked airlines to stop selling tickets for this summer.

Flight limitations are turning delays into cancellations. In the month of May 2022, the IAG Group company had announced cuts of up to 10%, rising to 11% in the following days. Now, the new adaptation has increased that figure to 13%, representing a reduction of more than 10,300 flights compared to the initial perspective.

Beyond these complications, the vast majority of European hubs continue to experience long delays. Brussels, Frankfurt, Eindhoven, London/Luton, Budapest, Lisbon and London/Gatwick suffer the most in this regard. On the contrary, airports such as Madrid/Barajas, Gran Canaria or Alicante are among those with the best figures.

Buscan revivir Mexicana

AW | 2022 07 112 16:45 | AIRLINES / MRO

Mexicana MRO busca tener su propia aerolínea

Mexicana MRO_Isologotype

Mexicana MRO seek to revive Mexicana

Mexicana MRO seeks to have its own airline

This July 12, 2022, the extinct airline Mexicana de Aviación would reach 101 years. The oldest airline in the country, Compañía Mexicana de Aviación, a company that is still alive in the Mexican community.

Grupo Mexicana has been made up of a series of companies, all related to the airline. The case of Mexicana MRO is the only section of the group that has continued to work after the closure of the airline on August 28, 2010. The Maintenance Base, also known as Mexicana MRO, which announced a few days ago the expansion of its paint shop, provides maintenance to aircraft around the world, and is listed as one of the best in Latin America. They never stopped operating, since the company was removed from the bankruptcy estate, in accordance with the commercial laws of Mexico.

In recent days, Rafael Gutiérrez Barajas, Chairman of the Workshop’s Board of Directors, has stated that the MRO’s Board of Directors is seeking, through an assembly, to change the social objective of the Maintenance Base, in order to be able to provide a air transportation and training. The Crew Training Center (CAT) currently continues to develop training tasks for airline personnel.

Mexicana plan

The plan to restore Mexicana de Aviación continues to cross the minds of Mexicans. But currently, after twelve years of bureaucracy, the liquidations to the 8,500 ex-employees continue to be unfulfilled, either by the company or by the Government of Mexico. Behind the scenes, there has been an approach by the National Institute of Social Economy (INAES) for the formation of a cooperative, but no serious project to revive the Mexicana de Aviación airline has arrived. Throughout this time of conflict, more than a decade, the Trade Union Association of Aviator Pilots (ASPA) has radically opposed the formation of a cooperative. For this reason, it is extremely striking that now the proposal to launch a new airline is made through the Maintenance Base, and with the name of Mexicana.

The current owners of Mexicana MRO are Banorte and Nuevo Grupo Aeronáutico, shareholder depositors in trust so that, at the time of the sale of the Maintenance Base, that money would benefit nearly 6,000 pilots, flight attendants, and ground workers. Behind the intentions of Mexicana MRO, it wants to take advantage of the infrastructure of Mexicana de Aviación to be able to reestablish itself as an airline. The impetus for the rebirth of Mexicana may lie in the fact that the date for the Maintenance Base to be sold is April 2024, when Trust 2100 expires, which would allow the collection of the debt with former employees to be extended.

Mexicana MRO continues to expand its capabilities as a large maintenance workshop. While former employees continue to dream that their illusions will materialize again, there could still be a glimmer of hope for an airline as prestigious as Mexicana de Aviacion to return to the skies.

Reservas slots europeos post-pandemia

AW | 2022 07 12 10:40 | GOVERNMENT / AIRLINES

Post-pandemic European slot reservations

EC requests airlines to reserve the same pre-pandemic slots

The European Commission (EC) proposed this Tuesday 07/12 that airlines have to re-book 80% of slots in order to keep them the following year, as they did before the pandemic. The Community Executive wants the requirement to be reinstated as of October 30, 2022, in a proposal that the European Parliament and the Council of the European Union, the institution that represents the countries, will still have to approve.

The Commission eliminated the obligation with the outbreak of the global health crisis in March 2020 to end ghost flights and reduce pollution, but as the restrictions due to the pandemic were lifted, the number of slots that had to be increased progressively. book the airlines, currently 64%. «The demand for air traffic has clearly returned and the time has come to return to the normal use of slots to guarantee efficient use of airport capacity, with fair and competitive access for airlines, for the benefit of passengers», said the European Commissioner for Transport, Adina Valean.

However, Brussels proposes that in the event of a worsening of the pandemic, a natural disaster or any political event with consequences for air traffic (such as the war in Ukraine), airlines can take advantage of the exceptions that have existed during the pandemic to justify why they don’t use their slots. Thus, if any of these circumstances occur, the European Commission may reduce the slots that companies have to reserve, as a measure of last resort, if for four consecutive weeks, air traffic is less than 80% compared to the level of 2019 «We have to ensure that we are better prepared for the unexpected», said Adina Valean.

Brussels also proposed specific measures in the face of war, such as a transition period of 16 weeks until the slot requirement comes into force again, once Ukrainian airspace has been reopened, or the possibility of reducing slots. on routes between the European Union and Ukraine.
