Spirit Airlines lanza el nuevo servicio conectividad a bordo FlytLIVE
Spirit Airlines ha comenzado a proporcionar servicios de Internet a bordo a sus pasajeros en la mayoría de sus vuelos operados por Airbus A320 y A321, según un anuncio del 13 de Julio de 2022. El despliegue de la Conectividad En Vuelo (IFC) por parte de Spirit se produce después de varios años de retrasos en el lanzamiento del servicio, con el ex-Presidente de la aerolínea de bajo costo con sede en Miramar, Florida (FL), Ted Christie, inicialmente apuntando a mediados de 2019. A partir de la fecha, los pasajeros ahora tienen la capacidad de conectarse al servicio IFC de Spirit utilizando el portal de cabina «FlytLIVE» de Thales que la compañía con sede en Toulouse, Francia, describe como una plataforma que admite servicios completos de Internet que incluyen transmisión de video, juegos, redes sociales y televisión en vivo para los pasajeros.
El servicio está actualmente activo en todos los aviones de la flota A320 y A321 de Spirit, y se espera que la expansión de su flota de A319 ocurra en una fecha futura que aún no se ha determinado. Según Thales, FlytLIVE está habilitado por un conjunto de acuerdos estratégicos establecidos por primera vez con los operadores de satélites SES y Hughes Network Systems en 2017. Según los acuerdos, SES contrata a Hughes para el servicio en los satélites EchoStar XVII y EchoStar XIX HTS, y los combina con sus satélites AMC-15 y AMC-16 para proporcionar la red de cuatro satélites que inicialmente permite la conectividad para los pasajeros de Spirit.
Un quinto satélite, SES-17, fue confirmado como operativo por el operador con sede en el Reino Unido el 16/06. SES-17 es un satélite de órbita terrestre geoestacionaria (GEO) del Sistema de Alto Rendimiento (HTS), el primero operado por SES en contar con una carga útil totalmente digital. Cuenta con 200 vigas puntuales que se pueden ajustar dinámicamente y alinear con las necesidades cambiantes del cliente.
«Este es un momento realmente innovador en la industria, ya que Spirit agrega servicios a bordo y opciones de productos que anteriormente no estaban disponibles en las aerolíneas de tarifas ultra bajas», expresa Matt Klein, Vicepresidente Ejecutivo y Director Comercial de Spirit Airlines.
En un comunicado de prensa separado anunciando la disponibilidad del nuevo servicio, Thales afirma que FlytLIVE ofrecerá velocidades ultra altas de hasta 400 Mbps a los aviones Spirit. El servicio FlytLIVE estará disponible inicialmente en la mayoría de las rutas operadas por Spirit, con la excepción de rutas seleccionadas en las islas del Caribe, así como en América Central y del Sur. Sin embargo, una vez que FlytLIVE se conecte al satélite SES-17, se espera que el servicio se expanda a todas las rutas operadas por Spirit. «La confiabilidad y el rendimiento del sistema están recibiendo excelentes críticas de los pasajeros de Spirit que ahora pueden transmitir al contenido de su corazón», dijo TK Kallenbach, CEO de Thales InFlyt Experience.

Spirit Airlines ahora se une a Southwest Airlines, JetBlue Airways y Breeze Airways como las únicas aerolíneas de bajo costo con sede en los Estados Unidos que brindan servicio de Internet en vuelo. Avelo Airlines, la aerolínea de bajo costo con sede operativa en California (CA) lanzada en 2021, que eventualmente equipará su flota con IFC. Un representante de Frontier Airlines ha comunicado que el peso y el costo del equipo les impide invertir en IFC, mientras que Allegiant Airlines y Sun Country Airlines se han mantenido abiertos a la posibilidad de conectar eventualmente a sus pasajeros a Internet en vuelo.

Spirit Airlines launches new FlytLIVE inflight connectivity service
Spirit Airlines has begun providing inflight Internet services to its passengers on most of its flights operated by Airbus A320 and A321, according to an announcement on July 13, 2022. The deployment of In-Flight Connectivity (IFC) by Spirit comes after several years of service launch delays, with former Miramar, Florida (FL-based) low-cost carrier Ted Christie initially targeting mid-2019. To date, passengers now have the ability to connect to Spirit’s IFC service using Thales’ «FlytLIVE» cabin portal, which the Toulouse, France-based company describes as a platform that supports full internet services including streaming video, games, social networks and live television for passengers.
The service is currently active on all aircraft in Spirit’s A320 and A321 fleet, with expansion of its A319 fleet expected to occur at a future date yet to be determined. According to Thales, FlytLIVE is enabled by a set of strategic agreements first established with satellite operators SES and Hughes Network Systems in 2017. Under the agreements, SES contracts with Hughes for service on the EchoStar XVII and EchoStar XIX HTS satellites and combines them with its AMC-15 and AMC-16 satellites to provide the four-satellite network that initially enables connectivity for Spirit passengers.
A fifth satellite, SES-17, was confirmed operational by the UK-based operator on 06/16. SES-17 is a High Throughput System (HTS) geostationary Earth orbit (GEO) satellite, the first operated by SES to feature a fully digital payload. It features 200 spot beams that can be dynamically adjusted and aligned with changing customer needs.
«This is a truly groundbreaking time in the industry as Spirit adds inflight services and product options previously unavailable on ultra-low-fare carriers», said Matt Klein, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, Spirit Airlines.
In a separate press release announcing the availability of the new service, Thales states that FlytLIVE will offer ultra-high speeds of up to 400 Mbps to Spirit aircraft. FlytLIVE service will initially be available on most Spirit-operated routes, with the exception of select routes in the Caribbean islands, as well as Central and South America. However, once FlytLIVE connects to the SES-17 satellite, the service is expected to expand to all Spirit-operated routes. «The system’s reliability and performance are receiving rave reviews from Spirit passengers who can now stream to their hearts’ content», said TK Kallenbach, CEO of Thales InFlyt Experience.

Spirit Airlines now joins Southwest Airlines, JetBlue Airways and Breeze Airways as the only US-based low-cost carriers to provide in-flight internet service. Avelo Airlines, the low-cost airline with operating headquarters in California (CA) launched in 2021, which will eventually equip its fleet with IFC. A Frontier Airlines representative has said the weight and cost of the equipment prevents them from investing in IFC, while Allegiant Airlines and Sun Country Airlines have remained open to the possibility of eventually connecting their passengers to the Internet in flight.
