Segunda oportunidad Superjumbo A380

A380, surviving the pandemic

Second chance Superjumbo A380

The colossus of the air refuses to disappear, after the perfect storm of the Coronavirus pandemic has fully impacted, suppressing flights to a minimum expression throughout the world. The resilience capacity of the aircraft has been put to the test, when the vital signs indicated the end of the mega-transport of European origin. Throughout the pandemic, the return of the Airbus A380 has seemed a bit unpredictable, or perhaps an announced end. A handful of companies challenged the post-pandemic market amid a slump in long-range travel with large aircraft. The colossi of the air such as the Boeing 747, the Airbus A380, the Boeing 777, the Airbus A330/A350 were called to slow down their operations throughout the world for a reasonable time, but the airlines that have developed operations with the Superjumbo have been encouraged to put them back in heaven.

Last week, Singapore Airlines has put the mega-plane back again for short-haul flights initially. Next month, Qatar Airways will also bring back the Airbus A380. However, the airline recently revealed that it was reluctant to bring the plane back. Instead, it was forced to do so by the ongoing grounding of some of its A350 aircraft.

Qantas Airways is transporting an Airbus A380 from Germany to Sydney, Australia ahead of the type’s return to service. The entire fleet was shipped to long-term storage in the United States. In a vote of confidence for the giant in the skies, the airline is bringing the type of aircraft home again, hoping to resume flights by early 2022.

While other airlines have been looking for a reasonably quick turnaround for the A380 on its return, Qantas Airways is giving itself a bit more time. Starting in mid-December 2021, the airline will use the aircraft to refresh the training of the crew. However, the aircraft will also undergo a cabin overhaul before returning to service, to align its cabin with other A380s with the new product. The plane will also receive some TLC from Qantas engineers after more than a year away from home. The return to service of the giant A380 with the Kangaroo airline is currently planned for April 2022. It is then that the airline intends to resume flights with the Superjumbo to the destinations of Los Angeles and London.

The British Airways Airbus A380 returns to the skies this Monday morning 08/11. The British airline returned the Airbus A380 to the skies of the world. With a flight from London/Heathrow Airport to Frankfurt Rhein-Main Airport, the airline launched its crew training program with the aircraft prior to its return to long-haul services, scheduled for December 2021. The mighty Airbus A380 does not has flown for the airline for over a year, which means that the airline’s crew has lost familiarity with the aircraft. To counter this, British Airways is treating the return of the A380 to service as the entry into service of a new aircraft. This means that the airline is operating a series of short-haul flights with the giant to re-familiarize the crew with the plane.

British Airways will operate a daily rotation of the A380 to Frankfurt in Germany and Madrid in Spain for much of the next month. The goal is for the crew to become familiar with the aircraft in a short flight. If something goes wrong during training, it would be much worse on a long-distance jump to Los Angeles, compared to a short intra-European jump.

British Airways is re-establishing the long-haul return of the Superjumbo. At the moment, British Airways will fly the Airbus A380 on short-haul flights. However, in December 2021, the A380 will once again plow through the long-haul lines establishing routes such as London/Heathrow to Dubai, Johannesburg, Miami and Los Angeles.

Emirates Airline has taken delivery of its last 118th Airbus A380 before the end of the year 2021, the coronavirus pandemic has focused more attention than ever on the wide-body-only strategy. While many competitors flying far fewer widebody units than Emirates have managed to recall the model due to associated high fuel costs and maintenance costs, Emirates does not have that option. Emirates’ de facto cancellation of five backorders for the A380 has allowed it to draw something of a line under the plane, but even the most optimistic forecasts indicate it could take a matter of years before the entire global A380 fleet is back on track. fly, if that, indeed, ever becomes possible. As the world’s largest operator of A380 aircraft, the airline’s total fleet of A380s will reach 118 by the end of the year. The airline currently flies to more than 120 cities, representing 90 percent of its pre-pandemic network, and plans to restore 70 percent of its capacity by the end of the year are underway with the return to service of more than fifty A380 aircraft (50).

Captain Hassan Al Hammadi, Emirates Airline’s Senior Vice President of Flight Operations, was quick to come to the defense of the aircraft as he watched the end of the pandemic, underscoring the centrality of the A380 to the airline. «We currently have about fifty of them back in operation. We have a plan to expand this to 55 by January [2022], as other countries open their borders. The A380 is our airline’s flagship and the backbone of our airline. It will be an important part of our fleet for years to come. Most, if not all, passengers love to fly the plane. We are in the process of bringing them back one by one, two by two, four by 2. It depends on demand, but we are confident that by next summer, hopefully most of our A380s will be flying again», said Hassam Al Hammadi.

Given the dwindling number of component and spare parts suppliers, Emirates Airline could face MRO headaches as the aircraft ages; In June 2021, he said the fleet averaged 7.3 years old. While the airline seems committed to its large fleet of A380s, industry experts agree that it could require long-term solutions to this. «They seem to be looking to diversify their supply base. With this potential change in procurement behavior, interaction with them is becoming more active. We are discussing various services, especially for their A380s», said Tim Butzmann, Senior Director of Sales. Lufthansa Technik for the Middle East and Africa. Almost all A380 operators are trying to find ways to change their MRO purchasing behavior to avoid extremely costly situations with the monopolies created for the aircraft as some suppliers go bankrupt.

Air Transport Consultant John Strickland said Emirates’ medium-term fleet expansion also faced problems due to inconveniences at Boeing over the timely delivery of the 777X, of which the airline originally ordered 150 in 2013. He modified the order in 2019 126 Boeing 777Xs, with thirty 787-9s (30) replacing 24 of the Superjumbo. In early October 2021, Emirates Airline Chairman Tim Clark once again criticized Boeing for the timely delivery of the plane, saying that he would not tolerate any imperfections on the plane. «The [figures] are currently more imprecise, as a small number of A380s have been recalled and cannibalized for spare parts, and there could be more later. Initial deliveries of the Boeing 777-9 were due to take place from next year, but due to production delays and technical issues; these have been delayed until at least 2024 or 2025», said John Strickland.

«Emirates has already demanded flexibility with Boeing to adjust that order in favor of additional 787s. With some current Boeing 777-300ERs already retired or scheduled to do so, this delay is giving Emirates some headaches in terms of fleet planning and Capacity availability. It’s a true state of flux, that’s for sure, right now. We are always in discussions with manufacturers about different aircraft, for example the A350 or the B787, which are already in our order book; although they are still wide-body aircraft, they are slightly smaller than the B777», said Capt. Hassam Al Hammadi.

Qatar Airways will reintroduce the A380 making it clear that it currently does not see a long-term future for its fleet of A380 aircraft, even though it is set to reactivate at least five of the SuperJumbos in the coming weeks. In early October 2021, the airline plans to reintroduce select A380 services to destinations such as London/Heathrow and Paris/Charles De Gaulle from mid-December 2021. The move has been forced on the airline due to recent grounding. out of a total of 19 of its A350 aircraft, due to accelerated degradation of the surface under the paint.

Qatar Airways said it had made the reluctant decision to return to service at least half of its fleet of ten A380s to fill capacity shortages. The airline’s superjumbos have not flown for more than eighteen months, and the airline has repeatedly said that it is not commercially or environmentally justifiable to operate such a large aircraft in today’s market.

Group CEO Akbar Al Baker said that the grounding of the A350s «has left us with no alternative but to temporarily bring part of our A380 fleet back to key winter routes. This difficult decision reflects the severity of the A350 problem and is intended to be a short-term measure to help us balance our business needs. It does not mean a permanent reintroduction of our fleet of A380s, which were grounded in favor of more fuel-efficient twin-engine aircraft at the start of the pandemic in Covid-19», said Akbar Al Baker.

Qatar Airways has also reactivated a number of A330 jets to help cover an increase in capacity requirements due to easing of travel restrictions and the upcoming peak winter holiday period, which it says is anticipated to see a return to pre-Covid levels. «One of Qatar Airways’ greatest assets is our highly flexible fleet of diverse aircraft. This means that we are not dependent on a specific aircraft type, and it allows us to balance our business needs with our responsibilities to maintain an environmentally sustainable fleet at all times. Going forward, we remain committed to finding alternative solutions to support customer demand and maintain the highest levels of sustainability and customer experience for our passengers. We continue to strongly urge Airbus to prioritize its investigations into the conclusive root cause of the problem. which affects the A350 aircraft type, and we make sure that they come up with a permanent solution as soon as possible to repair the damage and correct the underlying root cause», said Akbar Al Baker.

Boeing anuncia presentación oficial 777X en feria Dubai

Boeing_Isologo.svg

Boeing to Unveil 777X Dubai Airshow 2021

Boeing announces official 777X presentation at Dubai fair

AW-78022112

The next Dubai Airshow 2021 aviation fair to be held from November 14 to 18, 2021 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) will allow to show a window to the world the new aerospace products of the main aircraft manufacturers with their latest products and airlines. The aeronautical fair will mark a challenge against the impact of the pandemic. This 2021 it is not known if the airlines will show interest in the aeronautical fair. But this Friday, The Boeing Company has announced the interest of finally presenting the first unit of the famous Boeing 777-9X. The new aircraft will make its official presentation at the Dubai air show, which will appear on the market with a delay of several years and the new model is not yet ready to be marketed. It is a product of the 777 line that has developed more updates and incorporated innovations such as changes in the tips of the wings called «wingstip» that allows flexing to reduce its dimensions in taxiing and moorings at airport positions.

After two years of endless crisis, the American company has expressed: «This is the perfect opportunity to tell the world how important our industry is», explained Kuljit Ghata-Aura, Boeing President for the Middle East, Turkey and Africa. Presenting the aircraft, by the way, does not end the problems because the current market is saturated with aircraft, even practically new ones, that nobody wants to operate due to low demand. Currently, countless companies have reduced their fleet, others that have gone bankrupt, allowing us to observe a large number of widebody aircraft flooding the aircraft graveyards.

Dubai Airshow 2021 approach

If ever there was a sign that life is now returning to what was our normal, then a few developments and milestones passed earlier this week will serve as very welcome omens. Yes, we must still be vigilant to maintain our public health defenses against the coronavirus, but there are many reasons to smile knowing that Dubai’s place on the world stage is approaching its pre-pandemic state.

The emirate and its facilities are closely associated with the travel and airline industry. In fact, before the pandemic hit, a third of Dubai’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was linked to activities directly related to the aviation sector. Returning to normal means that that sector and everything related to it, are working again. Since aviation accounted for a third of GDP in the emirate, the Dubai Air Show on the world calendar was always the key event on the world aviation calendar. It was an event where billions of dollars in deals were made as the industry and its related sectors came together to see the latest innovations and aircraft.

The latest notifications regarding the participants of the Dubai Airshow 2021 fair to be held in the City of Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) correspond to the official presentation of the Boeing 777-9X, the presence of the Etihad Boeing 787 Airways that will present advances in its Dreamliners to improve sustainability. Flydubai, a subsidiary of Emirates Airline, will present its Boeing 737 MAX in a version that saves a little more fuel.

The Dubai Airshow is back and ready to be the biggest aerospace event for this year 2021. That’s a testament to Dubai’s response to the pandemic, as Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation and President of Emirates Airline. In this way, Dubai Airshow 2021 will show itself in the face of the next challenges of the post-pandemic, while after a global crisis, it will open the window of world aviation again.

Accionistas Boeing acuerdo demanda

AW | 2021 11 05 22:11 | INDUSTRY / GOVERNMENT

Accionistas Boeing acuerdo demanda Junta Directiva

Boeing shareholders settlement lawsuit

Boeing shareholders agreement demand Board of Directors

The current and former directors’ insurance companies are expected to pay The Boeing Company about US$ 225 million to settle a shareholder lawsuit that claimed that the aircraft manufacturer’s Board failed to adequately oversee safety matters related to the Boeing 737 MAX, according to people familiar with the matter. As part of the proposed agreement, Boeing has agreed to hire an ombudsman to handle internal affairs and appoint a board member with experience in aviation safety.

Boeing and the directors did not admit to wrongdoing in the deal, which was filed Friday 11/05 in a Delaware Court of Justice. The deal still needs a judge’s approval. The shareholders’ lawsuit was filed by managers of New York State employee retirement funds and a Colorado State pension fund for firefighters and police officers. They sued after the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft crashes in 2018 and 2019 where 346 people were killed on board. The lawsuit accused managers of failing to adequately look out for shareholders’ interests in overseeing then-CEO Dennis Muilenburg and developing the 737 MAX line. Boeing tried to have the lawsuit dismissed, but a judge rejected the measure in September 2021. The directors’ insurers will pay Boeing US$ 237.5 million, less fees and expenses, according to documents filed on Friday, November 5, 2021. None of the directors, not even Boeing, will be obligated to pay anything. Boeing agreed to add a board member with experience in aviation or aerospace engineering or product safety and create an office of the Safety Ombudsman for at least five years.

The Boeing company fired Dennis Muilenburg in late 2019 and replaced him with David Calhoun, who was on the board at the time. Both are defendants in the shareholders’ lawsuit, along with several other current and former directors. Eight of the thirteen managers who were on the Shareholders’ Meeting when the accidents occurred will have left in January 2021. Six new managers have been added since then. In January 2021, Chicago-based Boeing agreed to a US$ 2.5 billion settlement with the United States Department of Justice to avoid criminal prosecution for misleading regulators about the safety of the Boeing 737 line. MAX. Most of the money will go to the airlines that bought the planes.

Alaska cancela orden A320NEO

AW | 2021 11 05 21:39 | AIRLINES / INDUSTRY

Alaska Airlines finalmente cancela 30 aviones A320NEO

Alaska_Airlines_Isologotype

Alaska cancels A320NEO order

Alaska Airlines finally cancels 30 A320NEO jets

AW-A320NEO_Isologotype_001

Alaska Airlines has announced the cancellation of thirty (30) Airbus A320NEO aircraft from the order book made to the European manufacturer Airbus Group. Airbus released updated order and delivery numbers for October 2021 with no Airbus A320NEO orders being recorded for Alaska Airlines. Additionally, Alaska Airlines has also indicated that it no longer has any remaining Airbus aircraft orders pending delivery.

The American airline has reversed the order established in its opportunity to complement an Airbus-Boeing binomial fleet resulting from the acquisition of Virgin America Airlines in 2018, it has been inclined to standardize and homogenize it towards the Boeing 737 MAX fleet. However, he kept the order for quite some time before finally canceling it. In this way, Airbus loses Alaska Airlines as a customer for future new orders as an Airbus A320NEO customer.

Alaska Airlines had inherited an order for thirty Airbus A320NEO aircraft when it acquired Virgin America Airlines in 2018. Alaska Airlines had a fleet of Boeing 737s, while Virgin America had a fleet of Airbus A320s. Both airlines had complementary route networks, but over time the fleet would represent a disadvantage to keep operating costs low to be competitive in the market. By 2020, Alaska Airlines operated a mixed B737-A320 fleet. Boeing was also a financial supporter of the Virgin America acquisition. In a report in the Seattle Times, former Boeing Commercial Airplanes CEO Ray Conner stated that Boeing had provided Alaska with a $ 400 million loan secured by Alaska’s existing commitments to acquire the 737 MAX line. The relationship between Alaska and Boeing was quite strong. The slogan «Proudly All Boeing» was also pasted on the nose of its main fleet of Boeing 737s.

Although the company wished to standardize the fleet towards Boeing 737s, it could not officially announce the retirement dates of the Airbus A320 fleet due to the unavailability of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft. Airbus orders remained on the book, but the airline defined them as a cancellable order. In the latest schedule, the first of these aircraft was scheduled for delivery starting in 2024. However, it became clear in December 2020 that Alaska Airlines would not take on any of these Airbus A320NEO aircraft orders. Maintaining the Airbus A320NEO order book had some competitive advantage for Alaska Airlines. If Boeing were somehow unable to meet the needs of its fleet, it could look to Airbus to renegotiate a price that would keep Alaska flying a mixed fleet without assuming the additional cost pressures. Finally, Alaska Airlines and The Boeing Company reached an agreement in favor of maintaining a uniform fleet going forward. Currently, the ten Airbus A321NEO (10) aircraft in the fleet will remain for a certain time until homogenization is complete, tilting their balance towards a traditionally Boeing 737 fleet.

Alaska, new orders

Alaska Airlines in a quarterly presentation published on Thursday 04/11 has detailed that its order book consisted only of Boeing 737 MAX 9 (74) and Embraer E175 (12), eliminating the thirty units of the A320NEO aircraft. It currently maintains a fleet of ten A321NEO units (10). Alaska Airlines began its actual transition back to a fully Boeing fleet in November 2020. The airline announced a new transaction that would lead to the exchange of ten Airbus A320CEOs (10) from the Alaska fleet in favor of leases for thirteen new Boeing 737-9 MAX (13) aircraft from Air Lease Corporation. In December 2020, the Seattle-Tacoma-based (WA) airline announced an increase in its order for Boeing 737 MAXs to total 68 new aircraft. This included the 737 MAX leases announced in November 2020, announcing the acceleration of the retirement of the Airbus A320CEO aircraft, so that all those aircraft would leave the fleet by 2023, to focus on a homogeneous fleet of the 737 MAX line.

Alaska added some firm 737 MAX jets several times this year and filled in some options as well. It has a history of taking all of your ordering options, which could be a great deal for your fleet, and it can also help facilitate a 737 Next Generation fleet renewal in favor of fourth-generation 737 MAX aircraft.

Fiscalía investiga piezas defectuosas MPS para Boeing 787

AW-Manufacturing Process Specifications MPS_Isologotype

Italy opens MPS supplier investigation

Prosecutor investigates defective MPS parts for Boeing 787

Italian prosecutors in the south of the country have launched an investigation into the supply of parts to the American aerospace company The Boeing Company by Manufacturing Process Specification (MPS), a company at the center of the latest inconveniences of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner line. . According to two sources with direct knowledge of the investigation and another informed about the investigation, the move is aimed at verifying whether the components were defective and could pose safety risks, a perspective denied by Boeing and MPS’s attorney. It is the second investigation involving Brindisi, Puglia, Italy-based MPS, which is already under receivership amid an ongoing investigation into the bankruptcy of a predecessor company, and follows the intervention of an anonymous whistleblower, they said. sources familiar with the matter.

In October 2021, Boeing said that some 787 Dreamliner titanium parts provided by MPS through Italian group Leonardo Aerostructures had been improperly manufactured in the past three years. He said the problem, one of several production-related problems that have plagued the wide-body aircraft, does not affect immediate flight safety. The issues facing MPS highlight the aerospace industry’s reliance on a dispersed and sometimes fragile global supply chain.

Control chain

The role of MPS was until recently to provide small pieces of titanium and coat the components with chemicals to make them soft and strong. The company, which employs fewer than 40 workers, has also been a supplier to several other aerospace companies. Prosecutors are checking the chain of quality controls to understand why the issue with the MPS components was recently disclosed. A court-appointed administrator for MPS did not respond to an email requesting comment. A lawyer for the MPS owner, Italian businessman Antonio Ingrosso, and the company denied any security concerns.

«These are non-sensitive parts when it comes to aircraft safety and have been extensively monitored by MPS customers. We will show at the right time that it is unfounded to speak of technical failures in components supplied by MPS», said Francesca Conte.

Boeing declined to comment on the investigation, which could last several months. «Boeing and Leonardo are victims of possible misbehavior on the part of the sub-supplier. We are cooperating with the authorities and have no indications to provide so far», Leonardo General Manager Valerio Cioffi said during a presentation of results on Friday 05/11.

In October 2021, Leonardo Company said it was an injured party and would not bear any potential costs associated with the problem, adding that MPS was no longer a supplier. Boeing has also removed MPS from its subprocessor list. Flanked by palm trees in an industrial area of Brindisi, the doors of the MPS headquarters were closed, suggesting a lack of activity at the industrial plant.

The latest investigation comes as Brindisi prosecutors are about to complete an earlier investigation into the bankruptcy of MPS ‘predecessor company, Processi Speciali. The company leased its assets to MPS before going bankrupt in 2018, they added. In May 2021, Ingrosso was initially detained and then placed under house arrest as part of the bankruptcy investigation. Antonio Ingrosso, who has since been released, did not respond directly to a request for comment. His attorney denied that he played a key role in the Processi Speciali bankruptcy, adding that Antonio Ingrosso tried to save the company when he ran into financial difficulties. Former company employees have countered the claims, saying the company has been unfairly targeted.

Leonardo renews aerostructures business

Leonardo Company will continue manufacturing auto parts

The Italian Leonardo Company has ruled out going out of its business from its Leonardo Aerostructures division that the aeronautics and defense group is reviewing and expects to absorb at least € 350 million Euros/US$ 404 million Dollars in cash this year 2021 before bottoming out. The group controlled by the Italian state said on Friday 05/11 that the crisis of the pandemic had interrupted the change of the division that manufactures aircraft components for Boeing, Airbus, ATR, among others. The division is expected to break even by the end of 2025, Leonardo CEO Alessandro Profumo said, adding that going out of the troubled business was not an option for the group. «We are a sole supplier to the Boeing 787, we cannot exit the program», Profumo said in a call with analysts. Valerio Cioffi, Leonardo Company Executive responsible for the division, said the company was in talks with the unions to implement the aerostructures license from 2022. Leonardo set aside € 90 million in restructuring costs for early retirements in the division . Airbus’ production rate had already increased, while it would start to increase in 2022 for ATR. For the Boeing 787, the recovery was expected to be slower, but there would be no production stoppages. The possible participation of Leonardo Company in a cooperation program with Chinese aircraft manufacturer COMAC Corp. for wide-body aircraft would not be included in the group’s five-year plan.

Despite the troubles in the Aerostructures business, which comprises four plants in southern Italy, the state-controlled group reported an increase in its overall core profit in the first nine months and confirmed its full-year guidance. The group’s profit before interest, taxes and amortization (EBITA) increased by 22% year-on-year in the January-September period, reaching 607 million euros, in line with analysts’ expectations. The problems at Leonardo Aerostructures were partially offset by healthy growth in the defense electronics and security business and the aircraft component of the group’s aeronautical business. Free operating cash flow was negative of € 1.39 billion, an improvement compared to negative cash flow of € 2.6 billion last year.

Leonardo said it had a strong liquidity position and had no refinancing needs in the short term. Net debt was € 4.7 billion, compared to € 3.3 billion at the end of last year 2020. The group confirmed its intention to review a plan to list its US unit DRS on Wall Street, subject to the conditions of the market.
