The Embraer Group company OGMA Indústria Aeronáutica de Portugal S.A. has signed an agreement as an Authorized Maintenance Center for Pratt & Whitney PW1100G Geared Turbofan (GTF) engines of the Airbus A320NEO family. Embraer has revealed on Thursday 12/11 after 12 months of commitment with the American engine manufacturer on the structure of the contract. Embraer expects an industrialization and training project associated with the GTF contract to begin in early 2021 and to spend the next 18 to 20 months preparing the plant for the first engine work in late 2022 or early 2023.

OGMA plans to invest € 74 million Euros (US$ 87 million), mostly during the first four years of the project, to expand its scope of engine maintenance activity and achieve enough new business to triple its revenues to around € 600 million Euros annually. Embraer Services & Support President Johann Bordais noted that both OGMA partners, majority owner Embraer Portugal and the Portuguese Government, will contribute to the investment. Although the contract calls for OGMA to support the PW1100G exclusively, Johann Bordais said he expected more opportunities in the future to expand its scope to include other GTF derivatives. The engine variants also power the entire Embraer E2 family, Airbus A220, the IRKUT MC-21, and the suspended Mitsubishi SpaceJet MA90.

«At some point we will talk to Pratt about the other members of the family. The relationship between Embraer and Pratt goes back to the 1970s they were in the first program, the Bandeirante, as well as the Brasilia; they are in the Super Tucano; they are in the Phenom 100 and 300 family; they make APUs for us; so it’s a great partnership since the beginning of Embraer history. It’s a natural fit», said Johann Bordais.

OGMA is a Portuguese aerospace company that offers aerostructures maintenance and manufacturing services. Its capital stock is 65% held by the Airholding SGPS consortium, part of Embraer. The remaining 35% is owned by EMPORDEF, under the control of the Government of Portugal. OGMA celebrated 100 years on June 29, 2018. It is one of the oldest aeronautical companies in the world with a long and prestigious tradition. It counts in its client portfolio several governments, air forces and aviation companies. OGMA employs 1,800 people at its factory outside Lisbon. OGMA is located in Alverca, in the Alverca Aeronautical Park, about 15 km northeast of Lisbon International Airport, near the A1 and A9 motorways, next to the Alverca train station. Embraer said it expects the Pratt & Whitney deal to create another 300 jobs.

(Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China).

Boeing releases optimistic forecast for China market

The Boeing Company has announced a forecast on the increase in development prospects to twenty years ahead for demand for commercial aircraft to China despite the current pandemic crisis. The American aerospace constructor issued a statement this Thursday, 11/12 raising its forecast for aircraft demand in the People’s Republic of China for the next twenty years, making the country a bright spot in the aviation market, even when the current The health crisis decimates global deliveries in the coming years and the increase of new competitors such as new aircraft entering the market such as the COMAC C919, ARJ-21 among other developers.

The demand outlook for Chinese airlines will incur the addition of 8,600 new jets through 2039, 6.3% more than Boeing’s previous prediction of 8,090 jets last year. Those would be worth US$ 1.4 trillion based on list prices, the US aircraft maker said in a statement. «Although COVID-19 has severely affected all passenger markets around the world, China’s fundamental growth drivers remain resilient and robust. China’s recovery from COVID-19 has not only outpaced the rest of the world, But also continued government investments to improve and expand its transportation infrastructure, large regional traffic flows and a burgeoning domestic market mean that this region of the world will prosper», said Richard Wynne, Managing Director of China Marketing, Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

China’s domestic aviation market has rebounded to pre-COVID levels, but as international travel continues to be effectively closed, Chinese airlines have been delaying deliveries. Boeing and Airbus have been struggling to increase market share in China, but are also facing increasing competition from state-owned commercial aircraft company COMAC Corp. (Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China). COMAC has been steadily delivering its ARJ21 regional aircraft to customers throughout the pandemic and its narrow-body C919, which is still in flight testing phase, is expected to obtain a certificate of airworthiness from the Chinese aviation regulator, CAAC, next year 2021.

Boeing projected the need for 6,450 new single-aisle aircraft over the next 20 years, while China’s wide-body fleet will require 1,590 new aircraft, representing 18% of total deliveries, which fell from a year ago due to in anticipation of a slower recovery in global long-distance traffic.

Airbus incrementa entregas aeronaves en 10/2020

Airbus_Isologotype_svg

Airbus post-pandemic horizon line

Airbus increases aircraft deliveries in 10/2020

Airbus_Logotype Globe_001

Airbus Group‘s monthly aircraft deliveries have increased in October 2020 reaching a year-on-year level in 2019. The commercial division of the European industry has booked 72 orders for October 2020, approaching the monthly rate of last year for the first time since the beginning of the crisis the Coronavirus and continues to ease concerns about a debt overhang draining cash from unwanted planes. January-October 2020 deliveries reached 413 aircraft, 36% less than a year earlier. However, October deliveries fell just 6.5% from 77 in the same month in 2019. Airbus has sold 11 aircraft in the past month, mainly to private aircraft operators amid a drop in demand from airlines, and received three other A220 cancellations from America’s Macquarie MQG. So far this year Airbus has sold 381 planes, or 308 after cancellations, surpassing The Boeing Company in orders and deliveries as the US aircraft maker’s 737 MAX remains grounded by a 19-month safety ban. of grounding that is expected to be lifted this month of November 2020.

Airbus released the update after reaffirming internal plans to reach cash break in the last quarter, driven by deliveries of the narrow-body A320NEO family, while expressing concerns about the wide-body jets market. Even so, Airbus delivered 10 more wide bodies than it produced last month, further suffering a surplus of 135 aircraft of all types that it has not been able to deliver during the crisis. It delivered 43 single-aisle aircraft and 12 smaller A220s, suggesting a total potential inventory reduction of 21 aircraft. The deliveries should further ease cash concerns, although October made for an unusual month, said Sandy Morris, an analyst at Jefferies Group LLC. Most of the A220s went to Delta Air Lines, while the US carrier is said to be reluctant to take on larger A330NEOs, which are affected by a transatlantic trade dispute. Deliveries brought to a near point in April 2020 by the pandemic have rebounded as Airbus reorganizes hundreds of aircraft, supported by warehousing agreements with airlines unable to bring them into service. However, the share of deliveries to Chinese airlines remains below pre-crisis levels. Analysts say 2021 deliveries depend on the timing of any COVID-19 vaccine, the availability of cash and financing for airlines, and the ability of carriers to survive the winter off-season after a private summer. of the usual tourist demand.

Airbus expects demand to return to pre-crisis levels between 2023 and 2025, but has told its supply chain to be ready to increase production of the A320 Family by 18% to 47 a month in the second half of 2021, as those planes spearhead any recovery. With parts of Europe locked in, some suppliers have warned that production may not pick up as quickly.

A321XLR line expansion

Airbus Group plans a new A321 XLR assembly line in Saint Nazaire, France, following future prospects for the European manufacturer’s new coast-to-coast transatlantic model.

In the midst of one of the most aggressive crises for the aviation industry, the European manufacturer Airbus plans to invest € 60 million Euros to build a new production line for its A321XLR aircraft at its Saint Nazaire factory, located in France. This is undoubtedly excellent news allowing us to observe the promising future for the aeronautical industry. The plans to carry out this assembly line is directly related to the end of the A380 Program, since it leaves a free space at the Saint Nazaire plant, which currently has 3,200 employees. Four assembly lines for the fuselages of the A320/A321 aircraft are operational at this plant. The incorporation of a fifth line is part of a strategy carried out by the European constructor to significantly increase its monthly production rate and manage to produce 90 units each month. Airbus reported that the works will begin next June 2021 and according to its forecasts the line should be completed and operational by 2022.

The delegate of the French Union Force Ouvriére, Frédérick David has expressed that «this is a great decision, full of symbolism, for the future». The Aviation Workers Union has mentioned that this is good news for everyone in Saint Nazaire.

A220

Airbus is trying to stimulate demand for its smaller A220 jetliner as a tool to cut costs and cut capacity in the post-pandemic travel market. The European company, which took control of the former Bombardier Inc. aircraft in 2018. «We cannot say that we are in the seller’s market, but we do see good prospects. The A220 is well placed because it offers low operating costs, a platform flexible for long and short missions, and is building on a good market base», said Antonio Da Costa, Head of Marketing for Airbus Group. In this way, it continues to promote its ability to fulfill multiple roles that range from short flights between cities to longer trips on routes with limited or reduced demand.

The 100-passenger regional aircraft suffered a setback this week when Air Canada canceled 12 of its 45 total orders and postponed 18 planes. At the same time, almost 100% of the current A220 fleet has returned to service, a figure that is ahead of other models, according to the executive. Many were operating even at the height of the lockdowns in the spring and summer, when global fleets were largely grounded. «In a pandemic, airlines go for the most efficient and lowest cost. This was the plane of choice, it was flying around most of the time», said Antonio Da Costa.

Airlines, forecasting

Latvia-based Air Baltic Corp., the launch customer for the A220 series, backed the crisis by saying that it would retire all other aircraft and become the first company to operate only that model in the world. While the focus is on securing deliveries of the 507 aircraft in the A220 backlog, Antonio Da Costa said Airbus is talking to airlines about new orders for the jet, which comes in two versions, the 120-seat A220-100 people and the A220-300 for 150 pax, with a range of almost 6,400 kilometers (3,977 miles).

Southwest Airlines Chief Executive Gary Kelly said last month that weak demand for flights would make it easier to add the Airbus A220 should the airline choose to diversify from its entire fleet of all Boeing 737s.

Smaller city pairs the A220 has served, such as Geneva-London with Swiss Airlines and New York-Boston with Delta Air Lines, have seen traffic decline, but given time such routes should revive and demand for A220 it would bounce back, said Sandy Morris, an analyst at Jefferies Group LLC. Airlines may also be interested in having a smaller aircraft in their fleets that they can recruit to replace larger single-aisle models like the Airbus A320/A321 as demand fluctuates with ongoing outbreaks of the Coronavirus, Sandy Morris emphasized.

Airbus launched the A220 as a complement to its existing narrow-body family when it bought the model from Bombardier, and Antonio Da Costa said that 70% of large airline customers for the A220 also have the A320 series on their line. Still, the company has put plans to push production on hold given current volatility and will limit A220 production to three a month at FAL Mirabel in Canada and one at FAL Mobile, Alabama, USA. Increases had been planned as part of moves to raise production at the plants to 10 and four a month, respectively, by the middle of the decade.

In a possible stretch version of the A220-300 that can seat 160 people or more, in which airlines, including Air France-KLM, have expressed interest, Antonio Da Costa said the focus is on the current lineup, although the model has potential development.

IRKUT MC-21 motorización PD-14

AW | 2020 11 11 15:41 | INDUSTRY

MC-21 presenta motores Aviadvigatel PD-14

IRKUT_Logo.svg

MC-21 introduces Aviadvigatel PD-14 engines

The IRKUT MC 21-300 has rolled out its new version with Aviadvigatel PD-14 engines after a process of nationalization of Russian-made components. They were first equipped with two Pratt & Whitney PW1400G turbofan. UAC Corp., the holding company that controls Russia’s most important aeronautical manufacturers, Ilyushin, Irkut, Mikoyan, Sukhoi, Tupolev and Yakovlev, announced on Tuesday 10/11 that the MC-21 passenger plane had a new test aircraft equipped with PD-14 engines produced by the Aviadvigatel company.

The aircraft has so far used PW1400G turbofans made in the United States by Pratt & Whitney, however constant retaliation from the Trump Administration prompted Russia to implement a component nationalization program. «Only a few countries in the world are capable of creating aviation equipment of this level. The upcoming tests of the MC-21 with domestic engines are a historic event for the industry, a clear confirmation that the national civil aircraft industry has a future», said Anatoly Serdyukov, Industrial Director of the Rostec Aviation Cluster, part of the UAC Group.

The MC 21-300 is developed by Irkut and will be capable of carrying between 163 and 211 passengers over a distance of 6,000 km. The first flight of the single-aisle aircraft took place in May 2017 and since then three other prototypes have joined the certification program, all equipped with the PW 1400G, an engine that is also used by the A320NEO.

Change perspectives

When it was conceived, the MC-21 Program followed the same strategy as the Sukhoi SuperJet 100 (SSJ100), of expanding the participation of Western companies in its project so that the aircraft could be exported. However, the SSJ100 has proven to be a sales failure, only used largely by Russian airlines. With the deterioration of relations between the United States and Europe with Russia, Vladimir Putin determined that these programs should invest in the replacement of foreign suppliers by local companies. The MC-21 should be certified in Russia next year and have the first deliveries to Aeroflot Russian Airlines by the end of 2021. According to Irkut, the jet has operating costs 15% lower than the A320 and 737 models. The aircraft has 175 orders, most of them from companies in the Russian Federation.

AW | 2020 11 11 10:58 | AVIATION SAFETY / INDUSTRY

FAA could sanction Boeing again

The Boeing Company faces possible sanctions from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) linked to the 2015 security fix around the Boeing 737 MAX line. US aviation authorities are considering new safety-related sanctions or other enforcement measures against Boeing, even as they prepare to re-establish operations of the 737 MAX next week.

The FAA has alerted the aerospace company to alleged quality control failures on assembly lines and undue management pressure on engineers who certify safety systems could amount to violations of a 2015 agreement addressing oversight issues. of security. The agency is examining issues affecting various aircraft models, the person said, including the production of the 787 Dreamliner.

The FAA’s move to lift the grounding of the 737 MAX fleet, which is expected to be quickly followed by regulators in Canada, Brazil, Europe and elsewhere, follows long delays and public debates that have disrupted the aviation industry and plunged Boeing into its biggest financial crisis before the pandemic. The decision will be announced on November 18, 2020, according to government and industry officials, limiting a historical reassessment of pilot reaction times relative to aircraft designs. Operations on the 737 MAX line are not expected to go into effect until early next year, with the measures following a period of required pilot training and maintenance.

In a statement on Monday 11/09, the FAA indicated that it was in the final stages of signing the package of safety corrections to the 737 MAX fleet. The security agency has communicated that it does not yet have a firm timetable to approve the 737 MAX for commercial flights.

Southwest negocia 30 Boeing 737 MAX

AW | 2020 11 10 14:05 | AIRLINES / INDUSTRY

Southwest negocia adquisición 30 Boeing 737 MAX adicionales

Southwest-Airlines_Isologotype_PNG-Transparent

Boeing 737 Icon_001

Southwest Airlines, the leading low-cost airline in the US market, is considering buying up to 30 additional Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, considering the purchase process may differ slightly from the usual modality. The airline was reportedly entering negotiations with both Boeing and lessors with the goal of acquiring 737 MAX aircraft that had been rejected by the original buyers due to the effects of the travel slump caused by the current pandemic. The budget airline appears to have its sights set on an extraordinary purchase of Boeing 737 MAX units. The airline plans to buy 30 Boeing 737-8 MAX planes from Boeing that are currently in storage after losing their initial owners. In this way, the airline would possibly replace a small portion of its Boeing 737 MAX aircraft order consisting of a total of 249 aircraft that Southwest Airlines had ordered. In a statement dated November 10, 2020, the airline said it was reconsidering its Boeing 737 MAX order book.

In October 2020, Boeing announced that it planned to resume deliveries of the aircraft on the ground in the fourth quarter of 2020, following expectations of receiving recertification of aircraft in November 2020. While the manufacturer was struggling to find owners of up to 200 737s MAX that has produced during the period since the plane was grounded in March 2019, it seems that Southwest Airline’s considerations might seem like a brilliant way for the manufacturer to move a portion of the already-made Boeing 737 MAX jets to the new home in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas.

UE aranceles aeroespaciales a EEUU

AW | 2020 11 09 23:43 | INDUSTRY / GOVERNMENT

Aranceles impactaría en exportaciones de productos Boeing

logo_en

EU aerospace tariffs to the US

Tariffs could impact exports of Boeing products

The European Union (EU) intends to impose tariffs on aerospace products from the United States, which represents a full impact on the exports of aircraft of The Boeing Company for values close to US$ 3,900 million dollars, added to other American goods annually, the latest in a long-running dispute between the United States and the European Union over aerospace subsidies.

The EU has won clearance from the World Trade Organization (WTO) for the tariffs in October 2020, successfully arguing that subsidies provided to Boeing by US federal and state sources gave the company an illegal Airbus summary. The United States has already imposed tariffs on certain Airbus imports as part of a tariff package on some US$ 7.5 billion in European goods.

After the WTO resolution, Airbus sounded a conciliatory tone, calling for further talks between the two sides to try to remove all tariffs. However, while EU Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis expressed interest in the negotiations, he said: «We had no choice but to impose these countermeasures. We have made it clear all along that we want to solve this long-standing problem. to the United States to accept that both parties withdraw existing countermeasures with immediate effect, so that we can quickly put this behind us». The tariffs include a 15 percent duty on all Boeing imports, as well as a 25 percent duty on certain agricultural and industrial products. Boeing products account for about 44% of the US$ 4 billion in estimated annual sales.

Boeing perspectivas reestructuración

AW | 2020 11 09 20:44 | INDUSTRY

Boeing conglomerado vs reestructuración

Boeing_Isologotype

Boeing Chairman Philip Condit speaks in 2001 about the company’s move to 100 N. Riverside Plaza in Chicago. Behind him is Senior Vice President John Warner.

Boeing restructuring prospects

The Boeing Company has weathered the perfect storm in a complicated security and institutional position. The processes related to security in the lines of the 737 MAX, 787 Dreamliner, 777X programs, as well as difficulties in the CST-100 Starliner Space Program (Crew Space Transportation), have generated difficulties in the company’s performance; subsequently hit by the current pandemic that has caused an unprecedented impact on the global aviation industry. Consecutively, the current economic depression has rapidly changed the business strategies of the production lines in the different factorial chains where Boeing has announced the abolition of the 787 line in Renton, Washington, moving and unifying the 787 line in North Charleston, South Carolina. But as the liquidity drain continues to affect the aerospace company, the changes continue not only at the manufacturing centers, but also point to a restructuring of the Chicago headquarters. Will it be the next change in the aerospace industry? Pressure for cost savings after years of scandals and catastrophes could drive the company closer to its top executives in its manufacturing centers. Can you continue to allow your aspirations as a multinational to retain a corporate headquarters separate from the factories of your main operating units?

After its 737 MAX design catastrophe, with its software implicated in two plane crashes, and the crushing effect of the pandemic on aviation, Boeing must continue to trim its frame in order to survive. The company said it intends to reduce its global workforce by about 20%, or 30,000 jobs by the end of next year. Although the Defense division is stable, it is not so in the area of the Commercial Aciación unit, which is in the midst of a contraction process, reducing production lines as transporters cancel orders. The Everett FAL develops the currently suspended Boeing 737 MAX and the P8-A Poseidon line, while the 767/777/747 lines continue to be produced at the Renton FAL. The reality is that the 767/747 are in a sharp decline and the 777 line shows a turning point towards the 777X Program currently under development.

Chicago Headquarters

Boeing’s headquarters has been in Chicago since 2001, after a merger process with the McDonnell Douglas Corporation (CA), with the aim of being closer to financial centers, although its heart has remained in the Puget Sound Area, a conglomerate of the company that has been his true home since 1916.

In an Earnings call on 11/28 with analysts to discuss third-quarter (3Q2020) results, Chief Financial Officer Greg Smith had announced plans to cut real estate costs by 30%. «We are reviewing every piece of real estate, every building, every lease, every warehouse, every site to see how we can be more efficient, and we will share our decisions as we make them», said Greg Smith.

Will the current Chicago headquarters be an extravaganza, especially after the pandemic? The company has not slipped a comment in that direction, but does not risk skimping calculations. Paul O’Connor in 2001 was the founding CEO of World Business Chicago, the city’s business recruiting group, and a central figure in the push to get Boeing into the financial center of the Midwest. Boeing had a data-driven mindset in its search for the next headquarters, which began in quietly setting its sights on Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth and Denver. The Boeing Company declined the balance on Chicago to make it a new Amazon. Boeing had four criteria for its choice, O’Connor said: cultural diversity, connections to global markets, a business-friendly environment and easy access to Boeing’s major operations and customers.

«We backed them with all the data they wanted, and the other cities didn’t do that», said Paul O’Connor, who went on to work at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and is now a freelance Consultant. He said the move was a good decision for both Chicago and Boeing. The company found it could grab talent from Quaker Oats, Motorola, and others. «They saw that they had been looking at the world in too narrow a frame».

Paul O’Connor said another advantage Boeing discovered here was quick access to two large constituencies: Wall Street and the Federal Government. Executives could travel to New York or Washington and still be back in their own homes at night. Another civic leader who helped recruit Boeing, and who requested anonymity to speak freely, said he has little doubt that the company is reassessing Chicago. But he said that by being here, the company expanded its political influence by aligning itself with former mayors Richard M. Daley, who disembarked Boeing, and Rahm Emanuel, in addition to the congressional delegation from Illinois. However, a different group now runs Boeing.

In 2001, then-President/CEO Philip Condit took the bows for the headquarters move, boarding a corporate jet in Seattle one morning and revealing Chicago as the winning city only when he ordered the pilot to fly to Midway Airport, where he literally received the treatment. on red carpet. But Philip Condit had left two years later, reportedly ousted by his board of directors due to a scandal involving a Pentagon contract that ultimately cost two Boeing executives time in prison. Philip Condit’s second-in-command in 2001 was Harry Stonecipher, the former CEO of McDonnell Douglas Corp. whom some thought was the real force behind Boeing’s arrival in Chicago. But in 2005, he was also gone, due to an affair with another Boeing executive.

Boeing perspectives

With the disasters costing the shoulders of the products of the past few years, the 737 MAX line and a few years ago with the flammable batteries in the 787 Dreamliner, now a remote headquarters might have lost its appeal. Last week the aerospace company had put its yacht up for sale for US$ 13 million, showing signs that the financial pressure is intense, where it continues to wield not only a restructuring of the factories, but also of its entire global conglomerate.
