Boeing/Spirit reducen Proyecto AS2

Aerion | Equus Global Aviation

Boeing/Spirit reduce Supersonic equipment

Boeing, Spirit Aerosystems Reduce Team Supersonic Jet Project

The Boeing Company (BA) and Spirit AeroSystems (SPR) have significantly reduced the engineering teams that design the Aerion Supersonic Company’s AS2 commercial aircraft, as both companies seek to save liquidity during the global pandemic crisis.

Aerion Corporation is a US aeronautical engineering company based in Reno, Nevada. Since its founding, Aerion has collaborated with NASA and other leading aerospace research organizations to develop efficient supersonic aircraft.

The Boeing company had made a significant investment in Aerion in February 2019 to unlock supersonic air travel for new markets and build the future of sustainable supersonic flight. The health crisis situation has deepened the prospects for savings for future investments. The AS2 project, which will allow flying at Mach 1.4 speeds, will delay the first commercial aircraft flight to 2025 by one year.

The prospects for this new aircraft seem to flourish amid the Coronavirus pandemic with the existence of customers seeking speed and distance for their businesses. The company Aerion Supersonic is developing new strategies to improve in the upcoming Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulatory framework and in the excess of subsonic aircraft in the commercial aviation market.

Actualización línea Spirit Aerosystems

AW | 2020 06 18 00:05 | INDUSTRY

Spirit Aerosystems production update

Boeing 737 MAX Production Update

On June 4, 2020, Spirit AeroSystems received a notification from The Boeing Company to pause the manufacturing line of the fuselage structures of the Boeing 737 MAX to four units and avoid restarting production in 16 units to be delivered in 2020, until otherwise indicated. This is to support Boeing’s alignment of short-term lead times with its customers’ needs due to the pandemic’s impact on air travel and airline operations, and to mitigate the expense of potential unnecessary production costs.

Industry dynamics

Based on information in the letter, post-Boeing correspondence dated June 9, 2020, and Spirit AeroSystems’ discussions with Boeing regarding production, the Wichita, Kansas-based company believes there will be a reduction in its line 737 MAX of the total of 125 auxiliary units. Spirit AeroSystems does not yet have definitive information on what the magnitude of the reduction will be, but expects it to be more than 20 aircraft.

Grounding the Boeing 737 MAX in conjunction with the Coronavirus pandemic is a challenging, dynamic and evolving situation. During this time, Spirit AeroSystems plans to work with Boeing to determine a final production plan for 2020 and to manage the 737 MAX production system and supply chain. Due to the issues described above, Spirit has chosen to place certain layoff employees directly associated with production work and support functions for the 737 MAX program on a temporary cessation in Wichita of 21 calendar days beginning June 15, 2020. In addition , Spirit AeroSystems will declare an immediate reduction in the hourly workforce in Tulsa and McAlester by June 12, 2020.

Qatar Airways pospone órdenes

AW | 2020 06 17 11:57 | AIRLINES / INDUSTRY

Blockade 'may force Qatar Airways bailout'

Qatar Airways postpones aircraft orders

Qatar Airways deferred aircraft orders to 2020/2021

Qatar Airways has suspended deliveries of orders for new aircraft requested to The Boeing Company or Airbus Group SE in the period 2020-2021, Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al-Baker announced on Wednesday 17/06, adding that there would be a side effect on future deliveries due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Qatar Airways has ordered tens of billions of dollars of aircraft from the world’s two largest aircraft manufacturers. But after a sharp drop in demand for air travel, he says he has no room for new planes and will instead reduce his fleet to around 200 planes. “Many deliveries will be postponed. We have already notified both Boeing and Airbus that we will not be taking any aircraft this year or next. All the other planes that we have in the order that they were supposed to deliver to us in the next two or three years, will now be delayed for almost eight to 10 years», Al-Baker said in an interview on Britain’s Sky News .

Al-Baker repeated a warning to aircraft manufacturers that a refusal to comply with the airline’s request could jeopardize future business between them. «If they do not meet our requirements, then we will have to review our long-term business relationships with them. We have already informed Boeing that we will have to replace them with some other type of aircraft as we will no longer need more than the 737 MAX», said the CEO of Qatar Airways. The airline had requested 30 firm orders for Boeing’s 737 MAX. Akbar Al-Baker also said Qatar Airways would continue to support British Airways owner IAG after increasing its stake in the airline group in February 2020. “It is a strategic investment. We will continue to be investors in IAG. If necessary, yes, we will inject capital into IAG».

FAA chief to testify before US Senate

FAA Chief ready to testify before the Senate Committee

A bipartisan bill on Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Certification reform circulates as the Head of the aviation body heads to testify before a US Senate Commerce Committee next Wednesday June 17 on the Boeing 737 MAX. The Chief of the Federal Aviation Administration, Steve Dickson, will testify before the Senate Commerce Committee on Wednesday 06/17 at 10 a.m. ET. According to the Committee, Steve Dickson will answer questions about problems associated with the design, development, certification and operation of the Boeing 737 MAX. The audience will also discuss ways to reform the certification process.

Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Roger Wicker, Republican of Mississippi, and Senator Maria Cantwell, of Washington, have reportedly written a bill to reform the way the FAA certifies new aircraft. The bill would give the FAA the power to hire or fire employees of aircraft manufacturers who perform FAA certification duties. The FAA would also have the authority to appoint security advisers.

Culture Boeing 737 MAX

The Boeing 737 MAX was involved in two plane crashes that killed a total of 346 people and has been punished since March 2019 with grounding for design issues. The problems with the complex Maneuvering Characteristics Enhancement System (MCAS) were attributed to errors in the design of the Flight Control systems of the new 737 MAX line. Investigations into the Boeing certification process further exposed a toxic work culture. Reports say management ignored some employees’ warnings that overworked employees were making mistakes amid quality control problems at Boeing factories.

Text messages between 2016 employees suggested that aerospace giant Boeing tricked the FAA into the MCAS 737 MAX system. A test pilot also reportedly complained that he felt pressure from management to ensure that the new aircraft did not require costly pilot training.

At the 2019 hearings, lawmakers from both sides of the aisle criticized the company’s close relationship with the FAA. A House investigation that began a year ago was launched in early March 2019. That report said the FAA failed in its duty and that its review of the troubled plane was extremely insufficient. The report also called Boeing for having a culture of stealth.

In December 2019, the Boeing board dismissed Dennis Muilenburg as CEO amid criticism for his handling of the crisis and scolding from regulators for pressing for a faster return to service of the 737 MAX.

Boeing also faces scrutiny from other federal agencies. The Securities and Exchange Commission is reportedly investigating the aerospace giant’s financial disclosures related to the plane’s grounding. The Justice Department, the FBI, and the Department of Transportation (DOT) are investigating whether the aerospace giant misled regulators and customers about the plane.

Timeline toward recertification

The Boeing 737 MAX recertification flights have been slow to arrive. Regulators had to agree on final solutions, and Boeing discovered new software problems that needed to be fixed.

In January 2020, the aerospace giant halted production of the Boeing 737 MAX amid prolonged grounding when the finished aircraft were located in the factory employee parking lots of Renton, Washington.

In February 2020, Steve Dickson said that certification flights will begin in the coming weeks. But the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic stalled plans.

In March 2020, Boeing customers canceled a total of 150 Boeing 737 MAX orders.

In April 2020, the Boeing 737 MAX obtained 108 additional net order cancellations as airlines rushed into survival mode.

On May 28, 2020, Boeing resumed production at a low rate with plans to increase to 31,737 MAX per month in 2021. That’s less than the 57 aircraft per month it expected to build this month.

Boeing is now reportedly expected to run an FAA recertification flight for the 737 MAX in late June 2020.

Before the pandemic, airlines had taken the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft out of service during the summer travel season. But as Covid-19 decimated air travel, Southwest Airlines has removed the troublesome aircraft from its schedule until October 2020, and American Airlines and United Airlines are expected to do the same.

Renacimiento del Ilyushin Il-114

A Look At Russia's New Turboprop: The Il-114-300 - Simple Flying

AW | 2020 06 15 20:07 | INDUSTRY

Revival of the Ilyushin Il-114

OAK starts online manufacturing of russian Il-114 aircraft

The Government of the Russian Federation gave the order to establish the manufacture of the civil aircraft Il-96-400M and Il-114 in 2014. After six years of intense work, the latter aircraft seems to be closer to this objective than The Russian aviation industry is mainly known for its aircraft military. However, the arrival of commercial aircraft is imminent and the rebirth by the United Aircraft Corporation (UAK) builder of the Il-114 is an example of this.

Ilyushin Il-114

In the 1980s the civil aviation industry was opting for turboprop aircraft for regional flights. At short distances, its relatively low speed was not noticeable, but its reliability and economic efficiency were superior to that of aircraft with turbofan engines. So, the Soviet Union also joined this movement, since with such a huge territory, having a regional plane is extremely important to unite all distances on a large map but at the same time isolated and remote.

Third level competitiveness

The Ilyushin Il-114 turboprop may be a replacement for the Antonov An-24, which was already becoming obsolete. The revamped aircraft would have to compete with ATR Aircraft family aircraft, the Viking Air Q-Series and the Fokker 50, Dutch aircraft out of production.

The birth of the Il-114 turboprop aircraft first flew in 1990, but there was little interest from customers. The manufacturing company had had complications during development that subsequently ended the project, but this end turned out not to be definitive. The regional aircraft is reborn as Il-114-300 presenting several advantages over its western competitors. First of all, this aircraft was trained to operate in the most extreme conditions and to use poor quality runways. In addition, many autonomous systems are integrated, which means that it hardly depends on the infrastructure of the aerodromes where it lands.

Il-114 -300

The newly manufactured model foresees a series of updates to be in line with the demands of modern aviation. The overall architecture of the plane has been maintained, but the powerplant and avionics are brand new. The updated Il-114 will be powered by two TV7-117ST-01 engines with 2,650 horsepower each. In addition, they will be equipped with special propellers that produce less noise. The Il-114-300 will also have an auxiliary power unit, which will minimize its dependence on ground equipment. With the new avionics it will be piloted by a crew of only two.

All these improvements have also positively influenced its performance. The renewed version will present the following technical characteristics: Passenger capacity: 68 people, payload (transport version): 6,500 kilos, maximum takeoff weight: 23.5 tons, cruising speed: 500 kilometers, flight range with maximum load : 1,900 kilometers.

The takeoff of the Il-114

The original Il-114 was manufactured at the Moscow (Russia) and Tashkent (Uzbekistan) plants. However, the new order of the Russian Government foresees that its renovated version will be completely nationally made, exclusively using Russian-made components, many companies in the Eurasian country had to cooperate to make this project a reality.

In December 2019, the first experimental Il-114-300 was shown, which was made on the basis of an aircraft already built in 1994. However, in 2020 the assembly of the renovated machine, fully produced following the new serial manufacturing processes. In 2020 the ground tests of the first experimental Il-114-300 will also be carried out and in November of the same year the first test flight will take place. By then the brand new plane would have to come off the assembly line. The flight tests are estimated to last until 2022 and the new aircraft will receive its certificate in 2023. Therefore, even if there are delays in this process, these aircraft will most likely already be flying through the skies in the second half. of the 2020s. Thus, this will be a key year in the history of the revival of the Il-114.
