AW-Icon AW001

Airplane manufacturer ATR signs an agreement of 20 planes for US$ 536 million with Iran

ATR Aircraft has announced this Thursday, December 19, 2019, that it sealed a sale of $ SU536 million dollars with Iran Air for at least 20 ATR 72-600 aircraft. ATR spokesman David Vargas confirmed the agreement finalized for the 20 ATR 72-600 turboprop and said that Iran Air had the option to buy another 20. «They will definitely help Iran Air to modernize and develop regional connectivity throughout the country», said Vargas.

The ATR Aircraft spokesman declined to offer a value for the deal with Iran Air. The confirmed part of the agreement has a value of US$ 536 million at list prices, although buyers generally negotiate discounts on bulk orders. Iranian state television described the agreement as worth around US$ 400 million. The agreement also has the approval of the United States Treasury, Vargas said. The Treasury must sign aircraft agreements when at least 10 percent of the aircraft components are of American origin. The Treasury could not be reached immediately for comment.

Farhad Parvaresh, CEO of Iran Air, said the Franco-Italian company will deliver nine ATR 72-600 in 2017 and the rest in 2018. He said four of the planes will arrive within a month after signing the contract. In February 2016, ATR signed an initial agreement to explore the sale of the plane to Iran Air. ATR is under a partnership with Airbus based in Toulouse, France, and Leonardo SpA of Italy, which specializes in regional turboprop aircraft of 90 seats or less.

Political-economic unlocking

The ATR agreement comes from the back of the nuclear agreement that Iran reached with the world powers, which saw Iran agree to limit its uranium enrichment in exchange for lifting economic sanctions. That agreement allowed aircraft manufacturers to rush into the Iranian market.

Boeing Co. has already made a sale of US$ 16.6 billion to Iran Air, while its European rival Airbus signed an estimated value of about 22.8 billion euros. The Treasury has signed both agreements.

Chicago-based Boeing also signed a US$ 3 billion deal earlier this month to sell 30 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to Aseman Airlines of Iran, a company owned by the Iranian civil service pension foundation. Boeing sales represent the first important agreements for a US company in Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution and the inauguration of the United States Embassy. US politicians have expressed concern about the sale of airplanes to Iran. President Donald Trump is skeptical about the atomic agreement in general and has threatened to renegotiate it, without offering details.

Iran represents one of the last untapped aviation markets in the world. However, Western analysts are skeptical that there is demand for so many planes or financing available for businesses worth billions of dollars. AW-Icon AW002

Boeing avanza primer vuelo 777-9

AW-Boeing 777-9_70009.jpgAW | 2019 12 17 23:37 | INDUSTRY

AW-Icon AW001

Boeing-Logo.svgThe Boeing 777-9 moves towards the first flight in January 2020

The Boeing 777-9 is moving towards its first flight by January 2020. The new 777 variant has suffered several delays in poduction for six years, but the good news comes to fruition after a unique year for the American builder.

Boeing 777-9 engine test

In May 2019, the tests found durability problems with the stator blades in the second stage of the GE9X 777-9 high-pressure compressor, which had predicted that the difficulties in the 777 line were coming out. The stator vanes are designed to decrease air flow and increase pressure. But when GE9X engines were tested in early 2019, the exhaust temperature exceeded the design limits and the stator vanes deteriorated faster than expected.

The inaugural flight for June 2019 for the Boeing 777-9 was delayed and General Electric (GE) removed the engines. The improved engines were returned to Boeing in October 2019. In addition to solving the problem of the stator vane, GE made some additional design modifications to improve the GE9X engine.

A report from Tuesday, December 17, 2019, confirms that the improved GE9X engines are being installed on 777-9 aircraft at Paine Field Airport in Everett, Washington (WA). “We continue to progress in our pre-flight tests, focusing on final systems, propulsion and airplane level tests. In the static airplane test results, our detailed analysis of the data is progressing well. What we have seen to date reinforces our previous assessment that this will not have a significant impact on the design or our preparations for the first flight. The GE9X engine remains the rhythm element while we work towards the first flight. GE, our engine supplier, has made good progress to address durability challenges. GE has installed modification components in the certification test engines, and the tests have been restarted», says Boeing.

AW-777-9X.jpgBoeing 777-9 towards 1st flight

Boeing says that good progress is now being made in 777-9. Projections for the first flight of 777-9 would take place in early 2020. Boeing declined to be more specific than that. But they said, depending on a variety of factors, that they would appreciate any improvement in that timeline.

Boeing expects the first 777-9 aircraft to be delivered in 2021. With orders of around 309 orders for 777X, the initial orders date back to 2013. The 777X will come in two variations, 777-8 and 777-9. The colossal Boeing has lost competitiveness against Airbus last week when Qantas Airways chose to go with the A350-1000 for its Project Sunrise aircraft. But at least nine airlines are taking the 777X. For Boeing, there is a strong preference for 777-9 among its customers. The 777-9 has the potential to become a true globetrotter aircraft with a range of 15,000 kilometers and, depending on how the airlines choose to configure the plane, the potential to transport up to 426 passengers. Boeing also says the 777X will offer 10% less fuel consumption and emissions and 10% less operating costs than comparable Airbus airplanes.

Despite the problems and delays that afflict the Boeing 777X, the plane has enough points of sale to see a group of premium long-distance airlines such as Etihad, Emirates, Cathay Pacific, Singapore and ANA line up to take it. Boeing remains confident that the first delivery of the Boeing 777-9 will be in 2021. AW-Icon AW002

Estrategia equivocada de Boeing

AW-Boeing_737_MAX_1.jpgAW | 2019 12 17 22:09 | INDUSTRY

Boeing-Company-LogoLa estrategia equivocada de The Boeing Company siembra una perspectiva sombría

AW-Icon_Boeing 737 MAX

AW-Icon AW001

Boeing-Logo.svg100_737MAX8.pngThe wrong strategy of The Boeing Company sows a bleak perspective

In March 2019 a Boeing 737-8 MAX plane crashed in the Republic of Ethiopia, just six months after a similar accident in Indonesia. The two accidents have revealed a failure in the Flight Control System known as the MCAS of the Boeing 737 MAX, putting the Boeing aviation industry in crisis. Airlines rely on the delivery of thousands of MAX aircraft over the next decade or so. The Boeing Company was expected to represent a large part of its future MAX earnings. The firm is one of the largest exporters in the United States and at least one million people work for it or for its suppliers.

Since March 2019, Boeing’s response has been a mixture of remorse, evasion and arrogance, as it has bet that it can quickly recover 737 MAX and its businesses. On December 16, 2019, that strategy was exhausted when the company announced that it would suspend the production of the 737 MAX line.

Extending 737 MAX line problems

The Boeing 737 MAX crisis began in March 2019, after the second of two fatal accidents that killed a total of 346 people. Since the second plane crash of the Ethiopian Airlines flight ET-302, the crisis continues over time. Boeing promised that it would be solved in the coming weeks of the second fatal accident. Promises after promises have been left behind, delaying the departure of their grounding.

Last week (9-15/12/2019), Boeing insisted that it could get approval for the plane to fly again later this year. Then, Administrator Stephen Dickson of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said there were too many steps to complete to grant an approval until sometime in 2020. That prompted Boeing to announce on Monday, December 16, 2019 that the company would temporarily suspend production of the 737 MAX assembly line, as of the next Enro 2020, for an indeterminate period of time. While airplanes may be in the air before, analysts estimate that it could be fine in 2022, perhaps even in 2023, before Boeing can leave its 737 MAX problems behind; but there is nothing specifically proven. The company was wrong at the time, and now it is not known when the 737 MAX aircraft will fly again.

737 MAX return

Analysts say it is difficult to come up with an estimate of when the Boeing 737 MAX could get approval to fly again, due to the lack of details from Boeing or the FAA. All the agency and the company will say is that they are working to make sure the plane is completely safe. «You get small pieces of information. I would say that in mid-February it is an assumption, but it could be March [2020]. It is quite difficult to say that it will be an X or Y date», said Cai von Rumohr, an aerospace analyst at Cowen. Ronald Epstein, Bank of America Merrill Lynch Analyst, said he is now awaiting approval around March 1, 2020, but could see it until May 2020.

Resultado de imagen para Boeing 737 MAXBoeing continued to build

Boeing continued to build the aircraft from the ground connection, despite not being able to deliver them to customers. That left the company unable to get most of the money for sales, because airline customers pay most of what is due at the time of delivery. How much time does Boeing have to deliver the planes it has built? The company has about 400 finished airplanes stationed in the state of Washington and Texas awaiting approval to fly in commercial service. Boeing says it expects it to be at least 2021 before it can deliver the order book to customers, but analysts believe it could be extended until at least mid-2022, depending on when the company starts building the planes again. Part of that backup is because airlines cannot accept the immediate delivery of all the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft that they have built for airlines that need time to integrate the aircraft into their fleets. The aircraft delivery process will take a long time, especially since the FAA will now certify each aircraft individually. In the past, Boeing was allowed to sign on airplanes while leaving the assembly line. «There are many planes to deliver. You must make the payments before delivery. You have the FAA looking over your shoulder», von Rumohr said.

Work structure

Boeing has said it will continue to keep all its employees on the payroll. Von Rumohr said that this is partly an indication of the strength of the current labor market, with national unemployment at a minimum of 50 years, and even lower in the Seattle area with 3.3%. Boeing does not want to risk losing employees, it will need to restart production.

Supplier Line

With regard to Boeing suppliers, the outlook is more diffuse. Several said on Tuesday 17/12 that they are still waiting for the company’s guidance. Analysts believe that the company will have to provide some form of financial support to its suppliers to ensure that they are ready when production of the 737 MAX begins again. «We expect Boeing to support suppliers to preserve labor and production capabilities», JPMorgan Seth Seifman Analyst said in a note on Monday 12/16.

Production closing cost

Although Boeing will save money by closing production, it will incur expensive costs while its assembly lines are inactive. «We estimate that Boeing is spending almost US $ 2 billion per month at 737 MAX, but this does not drop to zero during the stop. For now, we assume that approximately 50% of supply chain costs remain, what which resulted in a monthly cash burn that is still greater than US$ 1 billion», said Seifman.

Boeing has already reserved US$ 5 million to offset reserves for grounding. But it is probably only a fraction of what the final cost will be. The company said it will receive a financial update when it reports the fourth quarter results. The grounding of the 737 MAX will ultimately cost the company about US$ 14 billion as established. The good news for Boeing is that you can probably afford this kind of financial blow. It has a healthy overall balance and access to the capital markets necessary to recover funds, and a better credit rating than its controls customers.

US economic coup

The closure of the Boeing 737 MAX production line is an important event that could eventually affect not only Boeing and the restrictions, but also the US economy, taking into account the aeronautical factory is the first exporter in the country. If the crisis continues until March 2020, we could recover approximately 0.5% of the US Gross Domestic Product (GDP). in the first quarter 2020, according to periods of several economists. The economic impact could be even greater if it begins in a place to layoffs. «Boeing’s decision to stop production of the 737 MAX aircraft could be a great success for the manufacturing sector just as prospects began to improve», wrote Michael Pearce, an American economist at Capital Economics.

The ramifications are likely to extend beyond the floor of the Boeing plant’s factory in Renton, Washington, in the aviation and manufacturing sectors. Ultimately, it could alter the country’s trade balance. Southwest Airlines, which had been relying on the Boeing 737 MAX to upgrade its fleet, rejected any hope of reinserting in its line for five weeks, until April 2020. American Airlines did the same last week. The actions of the main manufacturers that supply Boeing with critical elements of the 737 MAX, including Spirit AeroSystems and General Electric, fell in the first operations of Tuesday 17/12.

Resultado de imagen para Boeing 737 MAXBehind the scenes

Boeing’s decision is a recognition that it will take longer than the company expected for airplanes to return to the air. «If they had obtained information silently behind the scenes of the FAA that things looked good in January/February 2020, they would not have done this», said Richard Aboulafia, an aeronautical industry analyst at the Teal Group.

The Boeing 737 MAX is the most important aircraft of the American company. The FAA told Boeing last week that it had unrealistic expectations to put the plane back into service. Then Boeing has lost several estimates for a specific date of return of the plane to the air. The agency has not given a specific date to approve the return of 737 MAX, but FAA Administrator Stephen Dickson has said it will be done at the agency’s schedule, not Boeing’s. The FAA said on Monday 16/12 that it would not comment on Boeing’s commercial decisions and that it did not have an established time frame for when the work was completed to re-certify the critical commercial aircraft.

Richard Aboulafia said the closure would likely hamper the economy in the coming months and could worsen the nation’s trade balance. «This is the largest single-manufactured export product in the country», he said. Boeing said it would later determine when production could resume, based largely on the approval of government regulators. «We believe that this decision is less harmful to maintain the long-term production system and the health of the supply chain», the company said.

The long-term grounding has put Boeing in a difficult position, said Joe Schwieterman, a professor at DePaul University and an aviation expert. The closure of the plant will help Boeing conserve cash, but it will also disrupt the network of some 900 companies that supply parts for the MAX and other 737 models, Schwieterman said. The closure will cost the company economies of scale obtained by producing large numbers of aircraft. But by continuing to produce the planes on land, Boeing has been forced to store them on the ground as they depreciate because they cannot be delivered. “The airlines are certainly not going to pay for the planes until they are ready for the flight. So Boeing is really between a rock and a difficult place here”, said Schwieterman.

Boeing will probably face some difficult negotiations with suppliers on what level of payments it will provide during the production break. The company will want to avoid any layoff or closure by suppliers that prevents it from quickly restarting production once its safety is approved. Shares of French provider Safran fell 3.4% in Paris. «Boeing is really interested in identifying who needs payments to keep workers and capabilities in place for when the acceleration eventually occurs», Aboulafia said. Even before production stopped, the airlines delayed the dates for when they expected the 737 MAX to fly passengers. Last week, American Airlines eliminated 737 MAX from its schedule until April 7, 2020, a month later than previously announced. The Southwest Airlines pilots union also does not expect the 737 MAX to fly until at least April 2020.

Jeff Windau, Industrial Analyst at Edward Jones, said the 400 aircraft that Boeing had built but could not deliver were probably an important factor in the decision to stop production. This comes «both in consideration of storage space and the efficiency with which they can be delivered once the plane is ready to return to service», he said.

Boeing has made progress on some FAA requirements for 737 MAX to be back in service, Windau said, but still considers production disruption to be negative for the company. «The flight control system is complex and there are still unknowns at the time of the revisions and approvals of the regulator», Windau wrote. He also wrote that it could be difficult to restart an inactive factory once production increased again.

imagesBoeing Perspectives

Boeing is already having cash flow problems. In October 2020, the company reported that free cash flow went from US$ 4.1 billion a year ago to negative US$ 2.9 billion in the third quarter (3Q2019), worse than analysts expected. The Chicago company also faces nearly 150 claims of family members of accident victims, and has established a US$ 100 million fund to help families.

Meanwhile, the 737 MAX crisis has helped Boeing’s main competitor, Airbus Group, which experienced a 28% increase in deliveries during the first half of the year. Boeing deliveries fell 37%. Airbus declined to comment on Tuesday 17/12, but has said in the past that Boeing crashes have not affected its sales strategy. AW-Icon AW002

Throughout the grounding of the 737 MAX, Boeing has continued to build new airplanes and there are now approximately 400 airplanes in storage. We have previously stated that we would continually evaluate our production plans should the MAX grounding continue longer than we expected. As a result of this ongoing evaluation, we have decided to prioritize the delivery of stored aircraft and temporarily suspend production on the 737 Program beginning next month.

Boeing declares report for 737 MAX

Boeing-Logo.svgBoeing statement on the production of 737 MAX

– Boeing suspends production of 737 MAX from January because the certification moves to 2020
– Reduced production allows prioritizing the delivery of stored aircraft
– No layoffs or licenses are expected at this time

Our main priority is to return the Boeing 737 MAX safely to the service. We know that the approval process for the return to service of the 737 MAX, and of determining the appropriate training requirements, must be extraordinarily thorough and robust, to ensure that our regulators, customers, and the general public have confidence in the updates of the 737 MAX. As we have said before, the FAA and the global regulatory authorities determine the schedule for certification and return to service. We remain fully committed to supporting this process. It is our duty to ensure that all requirements are met and all questions from our regulators are answered.

We believe that this decision is less harmful to maintain the long-term production system and the health of the supply chain. This decision is driven by a number of factors, including the extension of certification until 2020, uncertainty about the timing and conditions of return to service and global training approvals, and the importance of ensuring that we can prioritize aircraft delivery stored We will continue to evaluate our progress towards the milestones of the return to service and will make determinations on the resumption of production and deliveries accordingly.

During this time, it is our plan that affected employees will continue with work related to 737, or be temporarily assigned to other teams in Puget Sound. As we have done throughout the 737 MAX grounding, we will keep our customers, employees and supply chain in mind as we continue to evaluate the appropriate actions. This will include efforts to maintain the gains in the production system and the quality and health of the supply chain achieved in recent months.

We will provide financial information on the suspension of production in relation to our 4Q19 results report at the end of January 2020. Many factors could cause actual results to differ materially and negatively from these forward-looking statements, including the timing and conditions surrounding the return to service of the 737 MAX fleet, economic conditions in the United States and worldwide, general market conditions. and of the industry, since they can affect us or our clients, and our dependence on our commercial clients, our clients of the US government. and our suppliers, as well as the other important factors disclosed previously and from time to time in our presentations before the Securities and Exchange Commission. Any forward-looking statement speaks only as of the date it is made, and we do not assume the obligation to update or revise any forward-looking statements, whether as a result of new information, future events or others, except as required by law. Emirates reduce órdenes Boeing 777X

Image result for Emirates Airline Boeing 777X pngAW | 2019 12 17 12:14 | AIRLINES / INDUSTRY

AW-Icon AW001

Emirates Airline reconfigures the orders of the developing Boeing 777X

Emirates Airline‘s orders for the Boeing 777X dropped to 115 in response to an initial order of 150 units. Emirates converted 11 firm orders of the Boeing 777X to options and opted for 30 Boeing 787 while converting 6 orders of the Boeing 777-300ER to 777X. The Gulf airline is still planning to receive 126 Boeing 777X planes but will have to re-commit to the plane that is now in option.

During the Dubai Airshow 2019, the most notable orders have been formulated by Emirates Airline and Air Arabia pate. While Air Arabia placed a mega order of the Airbus A320NEO, including the A321NEO XLR variant, Emirates Airline made headlines with orders for the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787.

At the Dubai Airshow of 2017, Boeing announced that it had reached a tentative agreement with Emirates for the purchase of 40 Boeing 787-10 with conversion rights for the smaller Boeing 787-9. However, when Airbus decided to close the Airbus A380 program and announced a tentative agreement with Emirates for 30 Airbus A350-900 and 40 Airbus A330-900, it seemed that Boeing was going to lose the ship.

The tentative agreement with Boeing for 40 Dreamliners expired earlier this year, which for some was considered a sign that Boeing would be losing an order here. However, the expiration of the agreements is never an indication that no agreement will be reached and I believe that an agreement with the Boeing 787 would be part of a broader framework.

AW-David_B-700076SPIRIT AEROSYSTEMS ES PROVEEDORA DEL FUSELAJE DEL BOEING 737 QUE SE PRODUCE EN WICHITA, KANSAS

AW-Icon AW001

The Boeing company suspends production 737 MAX in January 2020

AW-70866The Boeing Company has announced that it has decided to suspend the online production of the world-famous Boeing 737 MAX by January 2020. The production chain will affect the mass production of the Boeing 737 MAX for the first time in more than 20 years from next January. The grounding of the 737 fourth-generation lines will be paralyzed by the dilemma of the security crisis that the model is going through and the times involved regarding the approvals of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to return the 737 MAX to the skies of the world.

Boeing, which builds 737 south of Seattle, said it would not lay off any of the approximately 12,000 employees there during production freeze, although the measure could have repercussions on its entire global supply chain and the US economy.

Production standstill effects

The Boeing Board of Directors has decided to stop production of the Boeing 737 MAX after the Federal Aviation Administration refused to approve the return of the plane to service before 2020 and delivered what was seen as a public rejection of Boeing’s hopes to move faster.

The 737 MAX has been on the ground since March 2019 after two plane crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia killed 346 people in five months, which has cost the aircraft manufacturer more than US$ 9 billion to date. The decision to stop production will have a little immediate impact on airlines that have already seen deliveries stopped, forcing many to cancel flights or lease replacement aircraft. But it marks the deepening of a crisis that has already caused Boeing’s best-selling plane to be on the ground worldwide, its safety record is examined, customers press for compensation and its fundamental relationship with the FAA is under tension. AW-737000MAX.jpg

So far, Boeing has continued to produce 737 MAX airplanes at a rate of 42 per month and buying parts from suppliers at a rate of up to 52 units per month, although deliveries are frozen until regulators approve the plane to return to fly commercially.

Boeing has not expressed how long the standstill of the 737 MAX assembly line would last, rather it emphasized that this depended on the FAA. The FAA said it would not comment on what it described as a Boeing business decision but would continue working with global regulators to review the proposed changes to 737 MAX. «Our first priority is safety, and we have not established a time frame for when the work will be completed», the agency said.

Analysts said the shutdown was inevitable after Boeing was forced to abandon its year-end goal to return to service. «It is not a surprise that they do not continue to produce planes that are homeless», said Adam Pilarski, senior vice president of AVITAS, a Virginia-based consultancy.

After waiting for months to keep its factory lines running at the optimal speed for a quick return, Boeing said it had decided to emphasize delivering about 400 aircraft that have been produced and stored, once the FAA gives the green light. Such an emphasis would more quickly release the much-needed cash for Boeing, but could cause other problems when production resumes, industry sources said. Supply chains are fragile due to record demand and abrupt changes in speed often cause inconvenience.

In 1997, Boeing announced strong charges after being forced to suspend production of 737 and 747 due to factory problems. Boeing did not say what additional financial impact the closing of 737 MAX would have before the annual results due in January 2020.

A spokesman for the factory has announced that it would continue the production of a 737 military derivative, the P-8 maritime surveillance aircraft.

Boeing Suppliers

Spirit AeroSystems that manufactures the fuselage of the 737 MAX line together with other parts such as pylons, has expanded on Monday 15/12 that it would work with Boeing to understand any change in the production rate. Analysts highlighted General Electric Company (GE), Safran and Senior Plc as other suppliers could experience interruptions. GE and Safran co-produce engines for the 737 MAX and, unlike most suppliers, they are mainly paid once the planes are delivered to the airline buyer.

Airlines

Airlines with planes and orders for Boeing 737 MAX also face greater uncertainty after reducing flight schedules and delaying growth plans. Boeing is measuring the impact of the projected grounding of US$ 830 million on operating revenues in 2019 from the base. On Monday 15/12, the aerospace company has communicated that it was too early to assess the impact of production detention. AW-Icon AW002

Boeing detendría producción 737 MAX

AW-Irishtimes_7084334.jpgAW | 2019 12 16 16:22 | INDUSTRY

AW-Boeing_700337.jpgBoeing would stop production 737 MAX

Boeing-Logo.svgBoeing may be ready to temporarily stop the production of its problematic Boeing 737 MAX line

The board of  The Boeing Company is considering a management proposal, as it seems certain that the plane’s grounding will last until 2020, now probably until February 2020 or beyond. Boeing suppliers prepare for temporary detention at exit of Boeing 737 MAX. Boeing suppliers, customers, and financiers prepared on Monday 16/12 for a possible freeze on the production of Boeing 737 for the first time in more than 20 years.

On Sunday 12/15 Boeing was considering cutting or stopping production of its 737 MAX on land after the Federal Aviation Administration said last week that it would not approve the return of the plane to service before 2020. The Boeing board would meet Monday for the second day in Chicago to evaluate production decisions, and an announcement is expected later in the day. Two suppliers have reported that Boeing would probably stop the assembly of the aircraft at the moment, although some suppliers could be asked to continue producing to minimize interruptions.

AW-737-Coke-01.png

The company has already reduced production to 42 aircraft per month, from 52 per month before regulators ordered a grounding in March in response to two fatal accidents. A temporary closure was more likely than another cut, but it would potentially take a few weeks before production stopped. Boeing said Sunday night that the company «will continue to evaluate production decisions based on timing and conditions of return to service, which will be based on regulatory approvals and may vary by jurisdiction».

The Washington Post points out this situation of paralyzing the production of the 737 MAX line in this way: «Boeing without 737 is like Coca-Cola without soda», allowing to illustrate how far the situation of the American company regarding the crisis of the world’s best-selling Boeing flagship narrowbodies. Progreso del Programa R80

AW-RAI-Indonesian R80_Map.pngAW | 2019 12 16 15:31 | INDUSTRY

AW-Icon AW001

Indonesian R80 regional aircraft continues its development

The PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) is developing the 19-seat N219 that has just entered the construction phase, while the R80 of Regio-Aviasi Industri (RAI) went into the detailed design phase. These two Indonesian companies are moving forward with regional aircraft projects to help meet the demands of the country’s growing air transport network and revitalize the Indonesian aviation industry.

RAI R80

RAI represents a revival of the IPTN N250 regional aircraft, with the R80 Program. IPTN filed the project in 1997, victim of the Asian financial crisis. The new RAI company has revived the N250 Program as the basis for a 70 to 92 seat aircraft to compete with the Bombardier Q400 and the ATR 72.

RAI has retained approximately 60% of the N250’s structure, but the longest R80 uses systems that meet future ATC requirements. The aircraft has fly-by-wire flight controls and a full glass cockpit with touch screens. The initial design of the R80 includes a conventional control yoke, as stipulated by the first customers, but RAI plans to offer sidebar controllers in the future. The power plant will come from Rolls-Royce AE2100 or Pratt & Whitney Canada PW150A.

The R80 accommodates 92 seats in a 2X2 single aisle configuration. RAI designed the cabin for the rapid changes necessary for high-intensity short sector operations, with six doors, including two starboard service doors and two passenger entry doors. Cargo doors serve the two compartments at each end of the passenger cabin on the port.

The detailed design work with the Dassault Systèmes 3-D software has just begun. The plans require PTDI to build two flying prototypes and two test aircraft on the ground in Bandung. RAI has scheduled its first flight for 2017 and the company expects Indonesia certification in 2019. It has received orders for 145 aircraft: 100 from Nam Air, 25 from KalStar and 20 from Trigana Air.

PTDI N219

Meanwhile, the PTDI regional project itself, the N219, reached a milestone in September by cutting the first metal. The company has set a goal of August 10 next year for deployment, to match the country’s national technology day. He hopes to fly the plane next December and get Indonesian certification in 2016. Based to some extent on the Airbus DS NC212 Aviocar that PTDI has built under license for many years, the N219 would mainly serve on routes in the remote mountainous regions of Indonesia, where the aerodrome facilities often consist of little more than a strip cut on the side of a hill. Therefore, the design is rugged and well equipped with navigation aids. Two 850-shp PT6A-42 Pratt & Whitney Canada turboprops will take off a run of less than 2,000 feet in mtow. Garmin is supplying the five-screen flight deck.

For passenger transport, the N219 can accommodate up to 19 passengers in a two-by-one arrangement. However, PTDI also seeks military and other users and has designed a two-ton cargo interior and several variants of special missions. Like the R80, the N219 would first obtain certification in what the company considers its priority market, Indonesia. However, both programs aim to obtain EASA and FAA accreditation for subsequent export sales. The plans require that Airbus, the strategic partner of PTDI, help with the process. AW-Icon AW002

r80 (2).jpgKemajuan Program R80
