Aerolíneas, expropriation and CIADI

The Argentine State under the Kirchner government expropriated Aerolíneas (*) group companies at that time were under the orbit of the Marsans Group private. Argentina argued that the Spanish company did not make the necessary investments so that Aerolíneas Argentinas, Austral Líneas Aéreas, Jetpaq, Aerohandling were alienated.

Aerolíneas Argentinas is the protagonist of a matter pending in Washington. This is the claim brought by the Marsans Group for the expropriation of the company that is ongoing in the Court of Arbitration World Bank (ICSID).

In recent weeks, email Treasury Attorney’s Office, Carlos Balbín, a message came to the tribunal. It was a letter in which he explained that due to the complexity of the case, they would take more time to sign the award. It happens that for at least two years, the record is to be resolved.

«The Court is aware that the parties have been waiting for a long time the award and the importance,» reads the text. In addition, he says that arbitrators have deliberated and that several aspects have opposing views. According to experts, this type of missives occur when times are depleted. Those same understood interpret in no more than four months will be known whether Argentina has to pay for having nationalized the airline or charge for the money they put to keep it in the air. A\W

Monarch, a la espera de un rescate

AW | 2016 10 10 11:08 | AIRLINES

Monarch rescue deal to go to the wire as deadline looms

Monarch Airline’s multi-million pound rescue bid will go down to the wire this week, with a financial lifeline expected to come through just hours before the extension on its operating licence is due to expire on Wednesday

The low-cost airline is locked in talks with major stakeholder Greybull Capital and Boeing, and expects to unveil a massive funding overhaul to satisfy the Civil Aviation Authority’s financial health check-list and clinch a new Air Travel Operators’ Licence (Atol).

Monarch was granted a stay of execution by the aviation authority just four hours before its Atol was due to expire at the end of last month, and now faces another looming deadline on Wednesday when the twelve day extension expires.

Monarch boss Andrew Swaffield has assured staff that the deal will go through but warned that it will not conclude before the day of the crunch deadline.

In a letter sent to Monarch Airlines staff on Friday, Mr Swaffield said that the legal and finance teams are still working to “dot the i’s and cross the t’s on the largest investment in our history”.

“As soon as we are able to give details of our investment and confirm the renewal I will. But to manage your expectations, this will be on the 12th (Wednesday),” he said.

The aviation authority was initially reluctant to renew Monarch’s licence due to concerns over its available cash, but the airline is preparing to bounce back with a major new financing deal with Boeing and a fresh cash injection from Greybull Capital which owns a 90pc stake in the company.

Monarch is expected to adapt an existing order with Boeing for as many as 45 new aircraft to release significant cashflow back into the business. The deal will enable the airline to enter into a “sale-and-leaseback agreement” which could see Boeing buy Monarch’s order on the condition that the airline agrees to lease the planes for a set period.

It is not known whether the deal spans the entire order, which includes 30 aircraft and the potential for 15 more, but the total deal for 45 Boeing 737 airliners is understood to be worth around $2bn (£1.54bn) with each plane costing about $50m.

Monarch is hoping that this week’s financial injection will draw a line under a difficult two year overhaul for the airline under new owners Greybull. The fund snapped up a majority share after agreeing to pump £125m of capital into Monarch in 2014 in the airline’s third bailout in as many years.

Earlier this summer Monarch warned that more funding would be needed, sounding a warning in its annual report that it was looking to secure facilities totalling £35m either from owner Greybull Capital or an outside lender.

At the same time Monarch has attracted the interest of Chinese conglomerate HNA Group, which also owns ground-handling services business Swissport, reigniting speculation that a stake in the privately-held carrier may be up for sale. A\W

Asignan unos AR$3000 millones en presupuesto 2017 a Aerolíneas

2828115

AW | 2016 10 09 14:11 | AIRLINES

Budget 2017 allocated AR$ 3000 million for Aerolíneas

The Argentine government has allocated a budget for assignments in the transport sector

Transport assignments under the draft 2017 budget totaling about $ 61,600 million, 15% more than expected compared to 2016. This sum corresponds to agencies and companies in the energy, railway, communications, transport sector, among others.

Transfers to commercial air transport focus on Aerolíneas Argentinas S.A. (excluding $ 50 million for the Argentina Air Navigation Company).

Aerolíneas subsidies for the group amounted to $ 30 billion pesos, representing a 21% increase over 2016, according to a study of ASAP.

Subsidies versus competition
Last Thursday there was a tense meeting in the Transport Ministry, headed by Minister Guillermo Dietrich, with the presidents of the four chambers of long distance buses. It flew over the threat of strikes, the demand for subsidies, the demand for a transition. The reason: collective companies fear the impact of, ready to land in the country low cost airlines. One more case in which the modernist discourse of the government daily reality collides with the more pedestrian, no?

A postcard looks like a European country in recent months three companies of low cost air travel announced that landed in the country. But no landing ends. It is that another postcard is totally Latin: Hard unions, poor infrastructure, high costs. And a system of collective long distance which employs 20,000 workers and lit all the red lights. A\W

Empujando las ventas a fin de 2016

AW | 2016 10 08 21:15 | INDUSTRY / AIRLINES

Pushing sales to end 2016

In recent months observed in 2016, both Airbus and Boeing are very cautious ahead of new customers or new business in the world of commercial aviation. Boeing, which is still not meeting its sales expectations in a year of slowdown in new portfolios order, is optimistic the near horizon, but boasts excellent aircraft deliveries at an accelerated pace, something which is having on Airbus Group retraces some problems with deliveries of units of assemblies European consortium turbines.

Turkish Airlines is now compelled to seriously revise down its growth plan. The airline has postponed deliveries of part of the 92 Airbus A321neo and Boeing 737 MAX ordered 75 years past to support its development projects. The combined effects of the attack at Istanbul airport and the attempted coup against the current government came to «break» this ambition.

These 92 Airbus A321neo and Boeing 737 MAX 75 were expected over the period 2018-2023. A total of 167 medium-haul over five years. The company will accept less than expected since the 34 deliveries planned for 2018 will increase to ten and 40 to 35 in 2019. In 2020, now 42 deliveries are announced against the 52 originally planned.

Turkish Airlines expects an improvement in its situation from 2021 as the number of planned aircraft deliveries remains unchanged while the Airbus A321neo receptions and Boeing 737 MAX rising again in 2022 with 30 deliveries against six initially announced . Finally, another 15 medium-haul are now scheduled for 2023.

The Boeing 757 is unique

Twelve years after Boeing stop building its assembly line in the Boeing 757 it remains popular among US airlines, and I would say worldwide. In fact, American, Delta and United still operate large fleets of this aircraft.

In fact, Delta, which has recently invested heavily in a fleet of new aircraft, refurbishing its 757 cabins, preferred aging rather than replacing them with new aircraft.

Why airlines you are so loyal? The 757 is still a great aircraft today. You can not deny that is an old ship that was designed in late 1970. However, its versatility is remarkable and unprecedented and is profitable both short and transatlantic routes, or long distance.

During its production life, the 757 was always a breed unique rarity, a twin-engine configured in different classes. It is larger and offers greater range than the narrow-body aircraft, but smaller and cheaper to operate than a widebody.

It is also able to take off and quickly reach 4,000 feet with a speed of 140 knots less. While in comparison, the 737 does not take off until you have reached 160 knots and uses a lot more track.

Moreover, the 757 can easily upload directly to your cruising altitude. Instead, the procedure 737 requires a somewhat slower rise.

Unquestionably, the 757 also has its negatives, like a very old car (compared to new aircraft in the market), capacity cabin makes passengers take more time to leave. Also, and unaccountably, it’s a plane leaving a wake of turbulence in its wake that has sometimes been higher than leaving a Boeing 747.

Latécoère remodels expected MOM For Aircraft

PARIS-aerostructures supplier Latécoère is reorganizing to be ready for the planned launch of a middle-of-the-market commercial aircraft (MOM) in 2020-25, rebalance their mark between France and countries with lower labor cost . «The next MOM aircraft will bring technological advances in the high-end segment and Airbus A321neo and Boeing 757, which will be a great success and an opportunity we can not miss, but do not know [who], Airbus or Boeing,

Much has been made of a new Middle of the Market or MoM aircraft for over a year, but while Boeing, which invented the term, determines what exactly it will be, another jet has taken on a role that is capable of making it a Major Market Disruptor or MMD jet.

Airbus A321 NEO and its long range or LR version

This MMD has already been ordered or optioned for North Atlantic routes by Norwegian and JetBlue, with the former operating the variant with as many as 240 seats, or much the same capacity as the obsolete Boeing 757-200.

The LR form of the A321 NEO has the potential to significantly disrupt airline networks in this part of the world no matter what fleet decisions Qantas or Virgin Australia might make because of the way it can be used by other carriers in the Asia-Pacific to bypass the major limitations of restrictive bilateral agreements in some instances, or leverage the low cost airline model into routes that avoid congested hubs like Sydney, Hong Kong or the major Tokyo airports.

The 757 went out of production in 2005. With 4000 nautical miles or 7200 kilometres of range the A321 LR can carry as much as the older Boeing did over all but a few routes for considerably less cost in fuel and maintenance.

In a wider perspective, the A321 LR could be seen as a growth vehicle toward the A330 NEOs, which are likely to be found mostly in service over similar range city pairs with sector times like those on the east coast Australia to SE and Middle Asia runs.

By coincidence they have a seat count that is close to that of the original intention Boeing had for its 787-8s, except that those Dreamliners are now almost universally configured to fly around 90 more passengers (or 335 in the Jetstar example) because of an industry wide embrace of high density seating.

This Airbus version of the Boeing MoM will also be used by carriers with business models that are different and much more focused on driving low fare volumes of traffic than was the case in the days of peak 757s, the last of which was delivered in 2005.

And from 2019, every A321 NEO or new engine option of the largest single aisle Airbus that is delivered can be turned into an LR. It bears comparison to the Airbus strategy with its A350-900, which as delivered from mid 2018, can be upgraded in terms of range to an A350 ULR or ultra long range jet, which Singapore Airlines will be using to relaunch its non-stop services to Newark (for Manhattan) and other yet to be announced non-stop flights to America.

The MMD role of the A321 NEOs wasn’t apparent when Airbus officially launched the new engine option single aisle line in 2010. The large end of the line-up, the A321 only accounted for about ten percent of orders. Since then many NEO customers have upsized their orders prior to start of metal cutting, and new orders comprise at least 40 percent A321s with many expectations of 50 percent of NEO production being its share in 2020.

There are 364 current engine option A321s in the Airbus backlog and 1294 NEO versions at time of writing. The A321 NEO is said to be outselling its corresponding new engine technology Boeing product, the 737 MAX 9 by four to one.

The geometrical handicap of the 737 MAXs has been recited to within centimetres of its life in many places. The 737s sit too close to the ground for the wider diameter new tech engines to be used to full potential, and that inhibits the performance of the 737 MAX 9 even though the Franco-American CFM engine Boeing uses is a necessarily smaller version of one of the engines used on the competing Airbus NEOs.

The loss of 80 percent of the larger end of the single aisle market to Airbus is an incentive for Boeing to do something. The latest insider stories say an announcement of a 737 MAX 10 will be made between December and July next year of a model with has a taller undercarriage (which will trigger redesigning the emergency slides and other features) and use the same more powerful version of the CFM engine as is one of the options for the standard Airbus A321 NEO and LR versions.

But that would mean Boeing is selling the complexity of two substantially different versions of its single aisle family to cover the capabilities offered by one Airbus jet, which in turn would likely have negative impact on residual values and running costs, especially for airlines with relatively small fleets of jets at the outset.

First CS300 aircraft delivery to airBaltic scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2016

Bombardier Commercial Aircraft announced today that the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has awarded Type Validation to Bombardier’s CS300 aircraft. The validation is a requirement for the aircraft’s operation in Europe and a precursor to first delivery to CS300 launch operator, airBaltic of Latvia. Bombardier’s first CS300 aircraft delivery to airBaltic is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2016. EASA’s validation follows the CS300 aircraft Type Certification awarded by Transport Canada in July 2016.

«Certifying two clean-sheet aircraft within a nine-month period is a major aviation industry achievement and today we celebrate the latest C Series program milestone with the CS300 EASA certification. We owe a great deal of thanks to the hundreds of Bombardier employees and suppliers who have worked so diligently and professionally to design and build the superb C Series aircraft — the only single-aisle jetliners developed for the 100- to 150- seat market segment in close to 30 years,» said Fred Cromer, President, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft.

«EASA’s approval of our CS300 aircraft, as per schedule, recognizes the significant contribution of our highly skilled engineers and technical experts in the development and testing of the best-in-class C Series aircraft,» said François Caza, Vice President, Product Development and Chief Engineer and Head of Bombardier’s Design Approval Organization. «We fully expect that the CS300 aircraft’s upcoming delivery and entry-into-service with airBaltic will be as successful as for the CS100 aircraft with SWISS.»

«Our teams have produced an impressive family of airplanes with proven technology, performance, passenger amenities, economics and environmental qualifications that are turning heads and will be serving operators well in the future,» said Robert Dewar, Vice President, C Series Aircraft Program. «Our focus is on the completion of the first production CS300 aircraft for launch operator airBaltic as their teams focus on completing their pilot and crew training for first delivery later this year.»

Bombardier’s smaller CS100 airliner, which was awarded Type Certification by Transport Canada in December 2015, and Type Validations by both EASA and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in June 2016, successfully entered service with launch operator SWISS in July 2016.

Both airBaltic and SWISS have joined Bombardier’s Smart Parts program for the C Series aircraft. The Smart Parts program maximizes aircraft utilization and minimize maintenance costs by providing comprehensive component maintenance, repair and overhaul services, access to strategically located spare parts exchange pools, and on-site inventories based at the airlines’ hubs.

About C Series Aircraft

The C Series is the only aircraft optimized for the 100- to 150-seat market segment, which drives the aircraft’s phenomenal economic proposition and performance, opening up new opportunities for single-aisle aircraft operation.

Comprised of the CS100 and the larger CS300 aircraft, the C Series family represents the fusion of performance and technology. The result is aircraft that deliver unmatched performance and economics in the 100- to 150-seat market segment and an 18 per cent lower cost per passenger, making them the ideal candidates to complement larger single-aisle aircraft. Airlines can now operate routes that were previously not profitable or even possible. An improvement in range in excess of 20 per cent out of hot-and-high airports such as Denver, Mexico City or Lhasa has been confirmed.

Bombardier has created a new standard in cabin design and flexibility to ensure an unrivalled passenger experience. The aircraft’s larger seats, overhead bins and windows deliver a widebody feel that offers passengers unparalleled comfort in a single-aisle cabin.

The CS100 and the CS300 aircraft have over 99 per cent parts commonality as well as the same pilot type rating. The groundbreaking Pratt & Whitney PurePower® PW1500G engine, combined with the aircraft’s advanced aerodynamics, delivers reduced fuel burn, noise, and emissions – making the C Series the most community-friendly aircraft.

A Great Future For Bombardier And Embraer

The 100 to 130 seat segment is sizable with about 4,000 aircraft in service. It is also the segment that is being dismissed by the big duopoly. The argument that this market is shrinking because of up-sizing does not seem to be entirely plausible. It has been vibrant for a long time. It does seem though that it might shrink from the perspective of the big duopoly.

44996726-1475847887428802_origin

Take a look at where we were at 2Q16. For the big duopoly to say this market is shrinking seems be true from their perspective. They managed to squeeze out the other OEMs. For the past decade they have split the market, with Boeing  being the market leader. But even five years ago, Boeing was moving away and Airbus took the segment lead.

Aircraft in this segment typically fly many cycles and this means they age faster than long haul aircraft. Between 2000 and 2015 this segment averaged 170 orders per year. This is much lower than what Airbus and Boeing are used to in the over 150 seat segments. But that is a good number to work with. After all, the segment has averaged 197 deliveries per year over the same period.

As the big duopoly starts to leave this segment because their aircraft are noncompetitive unless deeply discounted, it opens a good market for Bombardier and Embraer. These two OEMs are offering aircraft that optimized for the segment. With 848 aircraft in the segment that are over 20 years old, and therefore ready for retirement, things look pretty good. Both firms should see growing orders as the older aircraft retire. At that age, it is MRO costs more than fuel burn that drive replacement.

Avianca wants to start flying in the country in December

It is after acquiring Mc Air, the airline of the Macri family. He announced an investment in Argentina of US $ 100 million

Germán Efromovich, the main shareholder of the airline Avianca Holdings, announced it yesterday to President Mauricio Macri that the company wants to invest 100 million dollars to fly routes within the country. It was after confirming the purchase, the president’s father, Mc airline Air.

«I come to tell the president Macri that will incorporate 18 aircraft to Mc Air and invest 100 million dollars in the launch of the company, which will employ 250 to 300 people. All things that a president likes to hear » Efromovich said in an impromptu press conference in his room on the seventh floor of the Hilton hotel, where yesterday a meeting of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) developed. «If everything is developed on schedule, on December 1 would start to fly both from Aeroparque and from the airport in Cordoba, with a small distribution center in Ezeiza airport,» he added.

Efromovich gave no details of the routes that wants to fly. In fact, to obtain authorization, the National Civil Aviation Administration should convene a public hearing to hear the claims of all airlines require authorization to the Ministry of Transport noted that there are about half a dozen operators they expect that call which would be the first in 11 years. The last time a public hearing was done was 11 years ago.

«We come to compete, but we will be aggressive competition,» said the businessman. He said turboprop aircraft will incorporate 18 to 72 passengers, in fact, represent direct competition for or Lan Airlines, which only fly jet aircraft type. «If any of these companies want us as their» feeder «of passengers, we are ready. This requires an agreement of two» , he said.

Avianca Holdings is the product of the merger between the Colombian Avianca and TACA, originally incorporated in El Salvador, with subsidiaries in several countries in the region, including the branch Avianca Brazil.

Battle between airlines and bus in Argentina

Transport Minister, Guillermo Dietrich, opens with Governor Juan Manzur, and the director of Plan Belgrano, Jose Cano, the new trading platform from Tucuman Airport.

On Thursday there was a tense meeting in the Transport Ministry, headed by Minister Guillermo Dietrich, with the presidents of the four chambers of long distance buses.

The low cost last arrival was announced by Norwegian, this week. Three company executives are traveling these days airports in the country accompanied by men of the environment Eduardo Eurnekian, owner of Aeropuertos Argentina 2000 and its local partner potential, Norwegian has 7,000 employees, 400 routes to 130 destinations, it carried 26 million passengers . In addition, days announced back its intention to occupy a place in that Flybondi market, a local, as its name suggests, it would be operating in a year, with medium aircraft, arriving in Buenos Aires, Iguazu, Bariloche, Mendoza, El Calafate , Ushuaia, among other destinations. Before them, in May, Colombia’s Avianca announced the purchase of Mac Air, a company that was the Macri family. «We will establish a local company,» then they said. And pointed to be flying by the end of this year, but still did not present the papers to do so, say their competitors. So much for the new. Let what is.

The competition of these Aerolíneas are not so much or Latam Airlines, the local market are distributed in proportion to a close 80 to 20 percent. No, competition is collective. It is that air passages have a floor price set by the Government to fight side by side with the «sleeper» long distance. But low cost is low, and that means breaking the floor, and begin to fight in the market of 45 million passengers carrying long distance buses each year. «We estimate that in the first year we could lose at least 10% of our customers», he raised land entrepreneurs Krantzer Thursday. «That will mean a reduction of about 4,000 jobs, who says it to the UTA, the guild?» They added to warm the atmosphere.

The official response was to put together a dialogue (how it has become fashionable in recent weeks, no?) Which will meet once a week to discuss the situation. But the government made it clear that landing was 5 offers companies low cost, which in 18 months would be flying the first. But they add something: «Here we have the lowest airfares in the region and we will not remove the floors,» said Transportation.

Like entrepreneurs put the cry in heaven it is that in the 2017 Budget subsidies have disappeared for long distance sector, which today amounts to some $ 150 million a month.

In Aerolíneas and Latam, meanwhile, are not concerned by the arrival of competitors believe the fight will be over the collective, on the one hand, and betting on a government forecast is met, it will double in 4 years air traffic. «Argentina is one of the countries with less rate of air travelers, there is a cultural issue that» they say in Latam. «We want to be ready to compete, we have to be more competitive, we have been good, we have improved indicators such as punctuality, add 10% shipping capacity», added in Airlines.

If it comes to amount of air passenger data take Aeropuertos Argentina 2000: 2,770,000 in August registered users across the country, 8.2% more than in 2015. One million passed through Aeroparque, and there is a problem key: operate with low cost, cheaper alternative airports, which is not in the country. «There is much backwardness in infrastructure, many airports that require more investment,» say the airlines. «Operating here at an airport is more expensive than in any country in the region,» he added.

«And low cost believe that the unions are like in their countries, and here are Peronists,» says a businessman collective, long militancy in the PJ, which will avoid being labeled gorilla. A\W

Subastan objetos de Northwest Airlines

AW | 2016 10 08 05:25 | AIRLINES

«He encontrado mi viejo cubo,» dijo.

Remnants of Northwest Airlines’ pilot training center up for grabs

Resultado de imagen para northwest airlines logoShawn Hokuf was in a time machine Friday. Stepping into an old Northwest Airlines DC-9 flight simulator brought him back to when he was a younger pilot and was put through emergency-type situations — engine and system failures, for instance — as part of training and to test his mettle. “I have a lot of blood, sweat and tears in this thing,” said Hokuf, now a Delta Air Lines pilot.

Flight simulators — nine in all — are among the thousands of items that were left behind when the Northwest Airlines/Delta flight training center in Eagan closed in 2012. The items are being auctioned off before the 300,000-square-foot building is demolished for the Vikings’ new headquarters.

Grafe Auction, a Spring Valley, Minn., company running the auction, opened the doors to the flight training center Friday to allow the public to look around. Another public viewing is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday. “I’ve not sold life-size simulators before,” said Judd Grafe, president of Grafe Auction. “And we’ve been doing this for 60 years. This is unique.”

Public bidding began online Sept. 29 and ends Oct. 13-14, depending on the items. Individual items like office equipment, overhead cranes, air conditioners, tools and even a light-up Mary and Joseph from a Nativity scene are up for grabs.

"I learned to fly DC-9s at this facility using these simulators," said Delta pilot Shawn Hokuf of Mendota Heights at a public preview of items being auctioned in the former Northwest Airlines/Delta flight training center in Eagan Friday, Oct. 7, 2016. (Pioneer Press: Jean Pieri)

As of Friday afternoon, bids on the flight simulators ranged from $5 to $375, but Grafe noted that “98 percent of the bidding happens within the last two minutes of the item being available for sale.”

Vikki Hancock of Inver Grove Heights made a list of items she might bid on — filing cabinets, storage shelves, high-top tables — through the auction company’s website,grafeauction.com. “If we can get some of these for 10 bucks, why not?” she said. But Hancock, a former secretary for the flight training department who retired in 2001, was mostly interested in seeing the building once again. “I found my old cube,” she said. “It’s still there.”

Grafe said several colleges have shown interest in the simulators, as have several aviation enthusiasts. One of them is Matt Armstrong, a science teacher at Cherry View Elementary School in Lakeville who has a homemade flight simulator in the basement of his Eagan home. He was at the preview looking for parts. “It’s a hobby,” he said.

Roger Plath, a 76-year-old retired Mendota Heights cop, was impressed with the number of fire extinguishers for sale. “They’re literally getting rid of everything,” he said.

Ron Ferrell, who collects Northwest Airlines memorabilia, made off with several old Delta signs — for free. “They were in the garbage,” the Mansfield, Ohio, resident said.

Former Northwest simulator instructor Pat Hassett of Lakeville hadn’t been in the building since he retired when the facility shut down and moved operations to Delta’s headquarters in Atlanta. “I kind of left with the building,” he said.

Hassett recalled how the hallways and rooms used to be packed with 1,000 or more employees —  up to 300 flight attendants, who also trained there, and an equal number of pilots from around the world, as well as support staff. “Now it’s like a ghost town in here,” said his friend, Jim Delong. “And weeds are growing in the parking lot,” Hassett replied. A\W

Announcement includes Letter of Intent for up to 60 737 MAX 8s
Marks Boeing’s future entry into airline’s single-aisle fleet
One of largest fleet announcements in Qatar Airways’ history

WASHINGTON, Oct. 7, 2016 · Boeing and Qatar Airways announced an order for 30 787-9 Dreamliners and 10 777-300ERs, valued at $11.7 billion at list prices, validating the value, reliability and performance of Boeing’s twin-aisle airplanes. The airline also signed a Letter of Intent for up to 60 737 MAX 8s, valued at $6.9 billion at list prices.

Today’s announcement builds on Qatar Airways’ current fleet of 84 Boeing aircraft, a combination of 787s and 777s, all delivered over the last nine years. With this new order, Qatar Airways increases its firm order backlog of Boeing widebody airplanes from 65 to 105, including 60 777Xs.

The announcement was attended by the State of Qatar’s Minister of Finance, His Excellency Ali Shareef Al Emadi, U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Tony Blinken and the Ambassador of Qatar, His Excellency Mohammed Jaham Al-Kuwari.

«Qatar Airways, already one of the fastest growing airlines in the history of aviation, today announces a significant and historic aircraft order that will power our future growth for the years and the decades ahead,» said Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker. «Boeing has proven to be a valuable partner, and today’s announcement is testament to our appreciation of the quality of their product and their dedication to providing world class customer service.»

Qatar Airways’ relationship with Boeing was renewed in 2006. Since then, there have been many milestones in the partnership. The airline was the first to operate the 787 in the Middle East and is a launch customer for the 777X. With the commitment for the 737 MAX 8, it would be the first Boeing single-aisle airplane model to join Qatar Airways’ fleet in more than 15 years.

«Congratulations to The Boeing Company and Qatar Airways on the remarkable milestone they’ve reached, which will significantly grow the number of Boeing aircraft in the Qatar Airways fleet,» said U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker. «Beyond its importance for these two companies, this agreement demonstrates the importance of global commercial partnerships in strengthening our bilateral ties. The 787-9 Dreamliner is the second member of the super-efficient, passenger-pleasing 787 family. The 787-9, a stretch of the 787-8, can fly 290 passengers 7,635 nautical miles (14,140 km) in addition to more cargo, allowing airlines the ability to grow routes first opened by the 787-8.

Boeing’s newest family of single-aisle airplanes – 737 MAX 7, 737 MAX 8, 737 MAX 9 and 737 MAX 200 – builds on the Next-Generation 737’s popularity and reliability while delivering customers unsurpassed fuel efficiency in the single-aisle market, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2017. A\W
