AW-BOINGBRAEREmbraer regrets delay of European Union regulators with the Boeing-Embraer alliance

The CEO John Slattery of Embraer Commercial Aircraft Aviation has expressed concern for regulators in the Commission European for maintaining an agreement to sell the company’s commercial aircraft business to The Boeing Company. Embraer has spent more than a year since Boeing announced its purchase agreement to gain control of the Brazilian company’s services and commercial aircraft businesses to better compete with Airbus SE in third-level airplanes. «I am better at supporting my team in the design and construction and sale of new planes than in the tedious or structured environment of going through antitrust approval. It is taking me a long time», John Slattery said in an interview on Monday 10/02 in Singapore.

The Boeing-Embraer agreement retains its last stumbling block in European approvals by postponing or delaying the time for the second time last month, demanding more details from aircraft manufacturers to determine if there are future monopolistic practices that could affect the world market. The latest setback will push the European Union (EU) deadline for a decision beyond an earlier date of April 30, 2020, undermining the efforts of the companies involved to close the creation of the company Boeing-Brasil Commercial, a multi-billion dollar company projected for early of 2020.

«We are fighting with one hand, maybe even with two hands, but at least one hand tied behind the back. The frustrated parties at the table are the airlines. It is the airlines that want to make the decisions of their fleet, they want to know with who is going to do business, want the solid competition to get the best terms and economy», said John Slattery, who is in Singapore for the inauguration for the Singapore Airshow 2020 air festival.

AW-Icon AW001

Resultado de imagen para Boeing 737 MAX Spirit AeroSystemsSuppliers push layoffs for 737 MAX

100_737MAX8-1The layoffs begin to take shape due to the ground effect of the Boeing 737 MAX

The layoffs are increasing in the global supply chain due to the grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX after The Boeing Company decided to stop production online in January 2020. Job cuts could get even worse, as suppliers that even Now they have been avoided, they say they will probably have to cut their labor forces if production does not resume soon.

Spirit AeroSystems, which makes 737 airframes in Wichita, Kansas State, laid off 2,800 workers in January 2020. After that reduction, the largest among suppliers for 737, Moody’s credit rating agency downgraded the bond rating of Spirit and said the cuts in the workforce put the local economy in the area at risk. Meanwhile, GKN Aerospace, a global British supplier for many aircraft manufacturers, has announced a few dozen layoffs at the Sumner, Washington, and United Kingdom facilities, where it let 37 contractors go. The UK-based manufacturer supplies Boeing ailerons, part of the engine housing for the 737 MAX and other components. It also creates windows for Spirit AeroSystems, which installs them in the fuselages it manufactures for Boeing. «It is too early to put a final number on layoffs. The cuts are part of an ongoing process and that the company continues to consider what steps to take site by site», says GKN Aerospace spokesman, Wes Bates.

The cuts are caused by the effect of two air accidents that continue to impact the air industry of auto parts contractors. Boeing continued production, although at a slower pace, until it stopped completely in January 2020. Unable to deliver those planes, it has nearly 400 Boeing 737 MAX in storage both in Renton, WA. as in other places where airlines have had to park them.

At a conference call with Wall Street analysts last week, Boeing’s new chief executive, David Calhoun, hinted that his company could restart manufacturing in April 2020. However, he did not specify whether he was referring to production by suppliers or by the final assembly lines of the 737 MAX in Renton, Washington.

Regulators & Certification 737 MAX

Delays for regulators to re-certify the plane as insurance are already undermining the general economy of the United States. On 01/2020, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the 737 MAX crisis could bring down half a percentage point of economic growth in 2020.

Aeronautical suppliers

Meanwhile, providers feel increasingly pressured. But Boeing «believes that this decision is less harmful to maintain the long-term production system and the health of the supply chain. We will work closely with our supply chain to ensure that we are ready to return to production safely and smart», says Paul Bergman, a Boeing spokesperson.

The company has thousands of pending orders of 737, enough work to keep its Renton plant occupied until the 2020s. If Boeing expects to complete those orders in a timely manner, it can’t risk starving its supply chain now. With that in mind, Bergman says: “We are extremely committed, especially as we navigate the current perspective of grounding and the MAX production rate. The health of suppliers and the preparation of rates will be critical as we evaluate production rates in the future”.

Several smaller providers who rely heavily on 737 work to earn income say they have already laid-off workers and reduced hours to reduce labor costs. «We have achieved it so far, but it has not been easier. If this lasts much longer, we will have to make difficult decisions», says the CEO of a Washington-based provider. The work for 737 represents a little more than a third of your company’s income.

During the previous decade, Boeing relied on suppliers to reduce their own costs as part of their momentum to maximize profit margins. These successive efforts left some suppliers with considerably less margin to weather the current crisis, according to several industry analysts.

Precision Castparts, a major metal manufacturer, issued layoff notices in Oregon last week, according to Clackamas County, which is organizing workshops for laid-off employees. Approximately 150 workers were laid off, according to the Oregon State Government.

Senior Aerospace AMT, a major supplier of structural parts of airplanes, recently issued dismissal notices, according to press reports.

In another cut, the managers of a machine shop in the Seattle area tell him that they let 20 workers go, about 10% of their workforce, and face equally difficult decisions in the coming weeks. «We will be fighting to increase» when Boeing restarts production of 737, says one of the managers who was not authorized to speak publicly about the company.

Struggles with a supplier, even a small one, can create bottlenecks and other problems that extend across a global supply chain.

«Level 2 and Level 3 providers are the most vulnerable, and it is a flashing red light», says Kevin Michaels, Director of the AeroDynamic Advisory Aerospace Consulting firm. Industry experts generally classify suppliers by levels: Boeing buys directly from Tier 1 suppliers, which they obtain from Tier 2 companies, who in turn buy from Tier 3. «If I run a parts machining company for 100 people in Wichita, Kansas. If I lose half my volume, can I still be alive? The answer for some is yes, and the answer for some maybe not». AW-Icon AW002

Mitsubishi pospone Spacejet a 2Q2021

Image result for spacejetAW | 2020 02 07 00:25 | INDUSTRY

AW-Icon AW001

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has announced on Thursday 06/02 that it will record a special loss of 496.4 billion yen (4.5 billion dollars) after its aircraft unit delayed the delivery of its SpaceJet regional aircraft for at least another year until after March 2021. The sixth delay announced by Mitsubishi Aircraft is a new blow to the ambitions of commercial airplanes in Japan and could stretch the finances of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.

The company cited the special loss as a reason to eliminate an operating profit forecast of 220 billion yen in the commercial year ending March 31, 2020. The new postponement also means that a plane that Mitsubishi Heavy had planned to launch on the market in 2013, will have to compete against a new generation of regional aircraft built by the Brazilian Embraer.

Japan’s largest airline by revenue, ANA Holdings Inc. will now take the first delivery of the plane sometime after March 2021.

Mitsubishi Heavy, which manufactures products ranging from nuclear reactors and ships to rockets and industrial machinery, has traditionally relied on stronger units to support weaker companies. «We use cash flow and loans to finance our projects and move forward in the development of SpaceJet will require more funds», said a Mitsubishi Heavy spokesperson. The company, he added, had no plans at this time to raise capital for aircraft development.

Government financing would not be an option for Japan’s largest heavy machinery manufacturer despite the fact that SpaceJet is backed by the government because doing so would contravene World Trade Organization (WTO) regulations that prohibit taxpayer subsidies.

The company said Thursday that it had appointed Takaoki Niwa, the Chief of its US Operations, as its new President, replacing Hisakazu Mizutani. AW-Icon AW002

AW-Icon AW002
