us$bng

First 737 MAX Renton Factory Roll OutBoeing a troubled giant

Boeing-Logo.svgAt the heart of the Boeing Company crisis

After the first losing record in The Boeing Company‘s 2019 Anuel Report, the aerospace construction company has blamed or blamed its first negative numbers in decades on the Boeing 737 MAX. The reality of these numbers never ceases to amaze Boeing that it is hiding deeper problems throughout the industry’s arc. The results of Boeing’s fourth quarter of 2019 (4Q2020) show that in several divisions they are having deficit results.

Defense/Space/Security Division

The US defense budget reaches a staggering US$ 738 billion. Even so, the aircraft manufacturer Boeing registered declines in the Defense, Space and Security division. Rivals such as Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics have reportedly increased revenue increases. Lockheed Martin and General Dynamics exceed sales expectations. The four divisions of Lockheed Martin, which are basically the equivalent of the Boeing Defense, Space and Security segment, registered a growth of 10.2% in a similar period. Year after year, the defense giant recorded almost the same growth rate: 11%, according to Lockheed Martin.

In its Defense, Space and Security segment, Boeing experienced a 13% drop in revenue during the fourth quarter of 2019 compared to a similar period in 2018. Boeing is building a narrative that deceptively suggests that when the 737 MAX does not have Grounding, all your problems will magically disappear. That could not be further from the truth. As its commercial aircraft division was suffering a blow after the twin accidents of the Boeing 737-8 MAX, other segments have also been struggling when rivals report impressive growth. This is in stark contrast to the 16% growth in revenue that Boeing had recorded from the fourth quarter of 2017 to the fourth quarter of 2018.

The decline in revenue of the Boeing defense division is considerable given that it comes at a time when the US defense budget has skyrocketed to a record high. Last year, President Donald Trump signed a military budget of approximately US$ 738 billion. It would be understandable that the Boeing rivals that have so far published their results for the fourth quarter of 2019 have registered negative growth. However, that has not been the case and its results have highlighted the fact that Boeing’s problems extend beyond its commercial aircraft.

Other defense contractors such as Raytheon and Northrop Grumman Corporation will have the same performance when they publish their 4Q2019 financial results. Raytheon’s revenue is projected to increase by almost 10%. Northrop Grumman is expected to record revenue growth of 8%.

With Boeing lagging behind its rivals in a segment that was supposed to be immune to the problems affecting its commercial aircraft division, this is a clear demonstration that the company’s situation is deeper than the problems with the 737 MAX, It is a deeper cyclical problem that aerospace will need to address urgently.

The promise of the Boeing 737 MAX loomed on the horizon where it sought to gain an advantage of the advanced Airbus A320NEO. The 737 MAX would have low fuel engines on a reliable aircraft. But there was another difference between him and the previous models of Boeing’s best-selling 737: the Maneuvering Feature Enhancement System (MCAS). This system helped the 737 MAX to fly like a 737. But it was discovered that this system defeated the pilots and drilled the company’s safety line and regulatory bodies.

23715651511_efecec6572_bBoeing Culture

Through the decades the American company has been suffering a systematic deterioration of the quality in the management, execution, and control of all the managed areas. Previous and current Boeing employees support theories about the capabilities of the factory in management processes. Some agree that the problems began to occur with the merger of The Boeing Company with McDonnell Douglas Corporation in 1997, which initiated a change in culture. Others argue that it was the corporate move from headquarters to Chicago, away from the engineering center. Another theory is the absolute cost of developing the 787 Program, the plane was much more expensive to develop than Boeing supposed and much more challenging. Some people wonder if the example of 787 helped executives prefers to extend the life of 737, rather than building a new plane from scratch. Aerospace Analyst Michel Merluzeau goes much further back, says that the cultural problem dates back perhaps 30 years ago, where the company has begun to show signs of lack of competition with the manufacturer Airbus.

Resultado de imagen para MD-95 png"Over time, the Boeing company has shown different difficulties in the production processes of its commercial aircraft lines. The merger, or more reasonable acceptance, an abstention from Boeing of McDonnell Douglas Corp. has brought changes in the work culture. The MD-95 aircraft was a model that has been renamed Boeing 717, where the company has tried to secure a market for this small narrowbody without achieving quantitative results and must close the production chain. The Boeing 737 needed at that time to be updated and in the face of the threat of the European colossus with the launch of the A320NEO, it had accelerated the processes to modernize its most favorite cell to develop the Boeing 737 MAX. Thus began a career of the two companies in the short-medium range to achieve supremacy at any cost where the results are observed on both sides of the Atlantic.

The replacement of the valued Boeing 757 was delayed by the American company, which translated into an advantage for Airbus to develop a new variant of the narrowbody, the A321NEO XLR with transatlantic capabilities. Again, Boeing extended the hopes of being able to develop a new mid-range aircraft to replace the AW-700003211Boeing 757, but turned to stretch the 737 MAX line by calling the MAX 10 variants, but its benefits would not exceed the future development of the A321NEO XLR.

It is difficult to point out exactly what led to the chain of events of the problems of the Boeing 737 MAX, but it is very obvious that the reasons are many, from management to inspection. Both Boeing and Airbus have faced a race for the dominion of the skies, where the lethal ingredient was to prioritize the market over safety.

Perspective in Boeing

Investor hopes now lie with the new CEO David Calhoun, who has been described as a specialist in changes. But Boeing has new leadership and a plan to get away from its horrible year while standing next to its flagship plane, the Boeing 737.

Boeing enjoys a positive sign, a healthy portfolio of commercial aircraft orders with an order book of 5,400 aircraft valued at nearly US$ 380 billion. That is a good hopeful number if customers stay with the aircraft manufacturer despite its battered reputation. All that remains is to redesign everything in Boeing so that it once again achieves the reliability it has been able to sustain for a long time. Although the giant is in difficulties he will wake up again. AW-Icon AW002

Boeing confirma nuevos recortes 787

Boeing continues production cuts on line 787

The Boeing Company has again announced a production cut of the 787 Dreamliner. The orders represented 112 Boeing 787 out of a total of 243 orders and 380 deliveries during 2020, of which 158 were Dreamliners. The current market is not favoring the likelihood of increasing demands, so the US manufacturer announced new production cuts that will last until 2023.

In October 2019, Boeing said it would decrease the production of wide-body aircraft from 14 to 12 per month the following year. Now, the company says the changes would be implemented late in the year, but that would not be the end of the production rate reduction. At the beginning of 2021, Boeing could only make ten 787 Dreamliners per month, as the company now expects a greater adjustment of the production rate to the quantity, due to the current environment and the short-term market outlook.

Production oversupply

Since 2011, when the Boeing 787 entered service for the first time, Boeing has been manufacturing more Dreamliners than orders to deliver. The only exception was in 2013, when 177 orders contrasted sharply with 65 deliveries. However, when the manufacturer increased its production frequency to approximately ten planes per month the following year, sales simply did not match the reality of deliveries. However, the company still does not say goodbye to Dreamliner and states that the production rate cut is temporary. He is planning to return to the 2020 rate of 12 aircraft per month in two years, 2023.

Market slowdown

The slowdown in the production of the carbon compound for the Dreamliners, with a list price that starts at approximately US$ 250 million, occurs when Boeing attempts to recover from a global ground connection of 737 MAX after two fatal accidents. 787 accounted for approximately 40% of Boeing aircraft deliveries in 2019.

Perspectives of 787

Looking towards a longer-term perspective, there are still opportunities for the broad market in the market, Boeing executives believe. Commenting on the perspective of the wide-body aircraft market, Greg Smith, Chief Financial Officer of Boeing, said that there were more widebodies and that eventually, it would be necessary to replace the aircraft of previous generations. The 787 family of aircraft was extremely well suited to address that market, says Greg Smith.

More hopes are associated with the 787-10 in particular, which Smith believes is an «incredible value proposition and machine for our customers, especially considering what it will replace in the market. China is a big business and a great move in these production rates, «says the company’s Chief Financial Officer. The Boeing Commercial Market Outlook forecasts that Asia will become the largest travel market in the world by 2038, while China will take the place of the largest national travel market. Over the next 20 years, 44,000 new commercial passenger aircraft will be needed worldwide, of which 7,700, in China. The market is very important for Boeing sales for wide-body aircraft such as the 777X and the 787 Dreamliner.

In September 2019, when the influence of the market on the production rate of 787 was discussed, the company’s Executive Director, Dennis Muilenburg, admitted Dreamliner’s dependence on him. «We have reserved slot machines in our wide-body production lines, both Triple Seven and 787, for Chinese orders and, ultimately, there is a dependence on Chinese orders», Muilenburg told attendees at the 7th Annual Laguna Conference of Morgan Stanley While matters for the company were complicated by the ongoing trade war between China and the United States, the situation has recently changed, presumably, for the better for Boeing. On January 15, 2020, both countries signed the Phase One Trade Agreement. According to him, China has pledged to increase imports of US goods and services by at least US$ 200 billion over the next two years. While it is not clear how much of the amount would go to Boeing aircraft, it is known that under the agreement approximately US$ 78 billion is dedicated to manufactured products, such as airplanes.

However, Boeing executives remain reserved to discuss the issue. When asked about the possible sales of 787 in China by investors, they refused to comment on whether Dreamliner is part of the Phase I agreement, stating that it should not matter if it is Phase I or Phase II of the agreement.

Boeing 787 Dreamliner comes in three versions: 787-8, 787-9 and 787-10. The first variant to enter service was the 787-8, the shortest version, which began flying with All Nippon Airways in 2011. The longest version, 787-9, continued in 2014, with the longest Dreamliner, the 787-10, entering service in 2018. As of December 31, 2019, Boeing has accumulated 1485 orders for Dreamliner (in its three variants), according to the manufacturer’s books. Of these, 939 aircraft have already been delivered, leaving 546 Dreamliners on the company’s to-do list. The largest operators of 787 (apart from leasing companies) are All Nippon Airways (Japan) with 71 Dreamliner in the fleet, followed by United Airlines (48) and Japan Airlines (44).

AW-Icon AW001

The Government of Quebec, Canada, has reported that it will not inject more capital through Bombardier Inc. to the company Airbus Canada. But the prime minister has said he may be ready to help Bombardier Inc. in another way. If Quebec rescues Bombardier Inc., it will not be through the Airbus Canada A220 Program.

Quebec Prime Minister Francois Legault has ruled out investing more money in the joint venture between Canada-EU, after a US$ 1 billion cash injection by the previous provincial government, which he described as a serious error. The additional cash for the unit is out of the question. «They should have invested in Bombardier, throughout the company. Now we are in a situation where Airbus has the most shares, so it is very difficult to make sure that the cost-sharing in that unit is carried out correctly», he said. the president to journalists in Quebec City.

Bombardier Inc., based in Montreal, said earlier this month that it was reassessing the joint venture because the costs for the new plane are rising, exceeding its balance schedule. Under the terms of the agreement in 2018, Bombardier ceded control to Airbus at no cost, while agreeing to finance cash deficits of up to US$ 925 million for four years, according to a press release at the time. Any additional deficits would be shared by investors, which include the Government of Quebec with 16%. The partners are in discussions about these additional investments, and an update is expected when Bombardier reports the results on February 13, 2020. AW-Icon AW002

Spirit AeroSystems announced on Thursday 29/01 that it has reached an agreement with the American aerospace construction company to restart the production of the Boeing 737 MAX fuselages. The treatment established by both factories contemplates the relationship with the production rate of the aforementioned aircraft. Spirit said that under the agreement, they will resume production slowly, increasing deliveries throughout the year to reach a total of 216 Boeing 737 MAX airframes delivered to Boeing in 2020. Spirit said the company does not expect to reach a production rate of 52 units per month until the end of 2022. The parties continue negotiating other terms. The company said the fare agreement is based on several assumptions, including the expected production rate of Boeing and the successful return of 737 MAX to service. As previously revealed, the contractual agreement for the 737 MAX is a requirements contract between Boeing and Spirit and the rate may change at any time.

Change of irectives

The Chief Financial Officer of Spirit AeroSystems and the chief accounting officer resigned for non-compliance. Spirit company has reported that CFO Jose Garcia and Accounting Director John Gilson resigned after a review discovered the breach of certain accounting processes after the end of the third quarter (3Q2019). Spirit Aero names Mark Suchinski as CFO and Damon Ward as the interim controller and chief accountant.

The company says it received information last month that led it to begin a review of compliance with its accounting process, which found that Spirit «failed to comply with its established accounting processes related to certain potential contingent liabilities that Spirit received after the end of the third quarter. of 2019», says the company. Spirit believes that the matter will not result in the restatement of the third quarter results or materially affect the results for the entire year. AW-Icon AW002

Boeing Reporte Anual 2019

boeing-buildingAW | 2020 01 29 15:44 | INDUSTRY

AW-Icon AW001

renton_hero_newBoeing Annual Report 2019

Boeing-Logo.svgBoeing has reported net losses of US$ 636 million in 2019

The Boeing Company reported a net loss of US$ 636 million for the year 2019, its first annual loss since 1997, impacted by the cost of the 737 MAX crisis that continues to increase.

The company reported a net loss of US$ 636 million last year, compared to a profit of US$ 10.5 billion in 2018. The main commercial aircraft operation lost US$ 6.7 billion last year, almost completely due to the continuing problems of Boeing with the 737 MAX. Revenue for the year fell by 24% because Boeing has stopped deliveries of 737 MAX aircraft in March 2019.

Compensatory payments

Boeing said it will pay an additional US$ 2.6 billion to airline customers to compensate them for the grounding of the 737 MAX aircraft, which followed two fatal accidents that killed 346 people.

«We recognize that we have a lot of work to do. We are focused on safely returning the 737 MAX to service and restoring the long-standing trust that the Boeing brand represents with the flying public. Fortunately, the strength of our overall Boeing business portfolio provides financial liquidity to follow a thorough and disciplined recovery process», Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun said in a statement.

Production Costs

The cost of production of the Boeing 737 MAX increased by US$ 2.6 billion during 2019. Boeing had continued to build the 737 MAX throughout the year despite not being able to complete deliveries and obtain most of the money from customer aircraft of the airlines. It has about 400 complete planes parked in the states of Washington and Texas awaiting delivery.

Boeing also expects a cost increase of US$ 4 billion in 2020 due to the temporary closure of production earlier this month. Boeing CEO David Calhoun said last week he expects to restart the line in two or three months, even without final approval for the plane to fly again. In total, Boeing has detailed nearly US$ 19 billion in costs associated with the 737 MAX crisis and those costs could increase significantly.

Boeing’s estimated costs do not include any litigation expenses for the families of accident victims, although it does include US$ 100 million for a compensation fund for victims.

23288495209_c00dc6e379_bReturn to 737 MAX

Boeing said last week that it did not expect the plane to be approved to fly again until mid-2020, although the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) later said its approval could arrive before that date. The airlines have been adjusting their schedules.

«It’s a very challenging time for Boeing. We have a lot of work to do. But I trust that we will handle this situation in the right way, and I am optimistic about the company’s future», Calhoun said in his call with analysts. The manager is confident that the 737 MAX can eventually return to service safely. «I have confidence in this plane. The MAX is a solid plane. We believe that we are going to deliver the safest plane in the sky. And we are committed to doing exactly that, and I know our regulator is too». He said airline customers still want the plane because of the cost savings it offers compared to previous 737 models. AW-Icon AW002
