The acquisition of the CRJ Program by Mitsubishi Aircraft

On June 25, 2019, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) announced that it had signed a contract to acquire Canadair Regional Jet Program (CRJ) business from Bombardier Inc. of Canada. With this contract, MHI will have functions related to maintenance, customer service, marketing, sales, etc. of CRJ aircraft. The impact of this acquisition in the aircraft business of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is strong.

MHI signs the acquisition on June 25, 2019 stating: «We have decided to conclude the transfer agreement for the CRJ business». The rules for timely disclosure in TSE are to disclose company information that has a significant impact on investment decisions, such as facts of decision, facts of occurrence and financial information. Therefore, it can be said that the decision facts are revealed in a timely manner when the resolution of the board of directors is taken.

Cost acquisition CRJ

Among Bombardier’s commercial aircraft businesses, the transaction is aimed at the CRJ series and takes the form of a commercial transfer. The consideration for acquisition is approximately US$ 550 million in cash (approximately ¥ 59 billion). In general, the business that is transferred includes not only assets but also liabilities. As MHI will also assume a debt of approximately US$ 200 million in this business transfer, the previous acquisition costs will be added to the burden of said subscription. In addition, MHI will take over the rights of the beneficiaries of the CRJ Held Trust Program (RASPRO), which is valued at US$ 180 million. The program is an established financial structure to promote CRJ sales by providing long-term leases to customers.

Parallel programs

Although the acquisition of the CRJ Program from Bombardier Inc. will accelerate the business in the Japanese industry to attract customers and improve its products, there is an overlap with the SpaceJet M70/M100 Program in the 70-100 seat category. Mitsubishi Aircraft will need to evaluate that the overlap of the programs does not end up damaging to any of the aircraft so much the Japanese MA70/MA100 as of the CRJ200/700/900/1000. Airbus aproxima a superar a Boeing

images (2)Airbus pursues the supremacy of global commercial aviation

Airbus SE is on track to overtake The Boeing Company as the largest manufacturer of commercial aircraft. The European firm has an advantage after the reports of the American rivals plummet in the deliveries after two fatal accidents in which two Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft are involved.

Airbus is in flight to overtake Boeing as the world’s largest manufacturer of commercial aircraft, keeping in mind the American manufacturer reported a crash in new deliveries of commercial aircraft after two fatal crashes involving the 737 MAX. Boeing will lose the greater title of planemaker because the deliveries have fallen 37% in this 2Q2019. Boeing, which has led its European rival since 2012, is struggling after security regulators around the world launched their best selling 737 MAX after the disasters of Ethiopian Airlines and Lion Air where 346 people died. Boeing reported 239 commercial aircraft deliveries in the first half of the year, down 37% compared to 378 in the same period in 2018, highlighting the extent to which accidents have damaged its reputation in the market.

Airbus reported 389 deliveries in the first half, up 28% from the same period last year, and is on track to deliver a record number of aircraft this year, beating Boeing for the first time in seven years. Before the accident, Boeing was delivering aircraft at a rate of 50 per month in the first quarter. Since then, production has fallen to only 30 per month in 2Q2019. Boeing stopped deliveries of the best-selling plane since it landed in mid-March.

There are more than 150 undelivered Boeing 737 MAX aircraft parked on US sites, as well as 380 owned by airlines that remain on the ground. June was the third consecutive month that Boeing did not book new orders for its 737 MAX aircraft. Air regulators are not expected to clear the model to fly again before the end of September, as the company continues to work to repair the flight control systems of the aircraft.

Boeing would lose aerial supremacy

Airbus has increased the pressure on Boeing by boosting its successful A320NEO, a direct rival to 737 MAX, and publicly announcing an increase in production. This week, Boeing lost an interim agreement for 50 Boeing 737 MAX of flyadeal, the low cost arm of Saudi Arabian Airlines, which instead ordered orders from Airbus. The agreement, with a value of more than US$ 5.5 billion, is one of the first direct indications that air accidents have caused a change of business towards the Boeing rival.

However, last month at Paris Air Show 2019, Boeing was shot in the arm when International Airlines Group, the parent of British Airways, signed a letter of intent, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to buy 200 aircraft Boeing 737 MAX in the first new sales agreement for the passenger plane since it was grounded. The IAG order has not yet been officially reserved by Boeing. A \ W

Russia will no longer depend on foreign materials for the composite wing MC-21 since 2020, said the Minister of Industry and Commerce of Russia, Denis Manturov, speaking at a GMIS manufacturing and industrialization summit. The minister noted that the need to manufacture our own materials arose after the West banned Japan from supplying the composite materials necessary for the creation of the wing. In this regard, Russia decided to launch its material production technology for the composite wing. «We both feel that we are launching our own production technology,» Manturov said.

Aernnova is negotiating purchase of Bombardier plant in Northern Ireland

Aernnova is negotiating the purchase of the Bombardier Plant in Northern Ireland, United Kingdom, which is in the process of being sold since 2018. The company based in Vitoria is among the companies and funds interested in acquiring the plant where Bombardier manufactures wings and fuselages for different aircraft, including the new Airbus A220 regional aircraft.

Aernnova has refused to make any kind of comment about this presumed interest, although the move would make a lot of sense since the aeronautical firm is an Airbus and Boeing supplier, and could generate economies of scale with this plant.

Behind the interest for the plant in Northern Ireland are the American Spirit AeroSystems and Triumph Group, the British GKN as possible interested in taking over the Bombardier operations in Northern Ireland, which are intrinsically related to the A220 family of aircraft. All the companies have stated that they are exploring strategic alternatives for their air structures business. The plant in the British region, which at the end of 2017 employed some 4,500 people, obtained an operating profit of US$ 4.9 million (4.3 million euros) in 2018, compared to the red numbers of 33, 8 million dollars (30.1 million euros) a year earlier.

The divestment of Bombardier Inc. in the area of the commercial aviation industry relies on Bank of America Merrill Lynch and Credit Suisse as advisors to form part of the restructuring plan of the Canadian company, which has opted to reduce to the minimum its air business to focus on the area of business, rail and aerospace aviation. The company has detached itself from the De Havilland Canada commercial aircraft line that sold the QSeries turboprop aircraft program to Longview Aviation, the parent company of Viking Air, valued at 263 million euros, as well as the concession agreement. shareholder of the CSeries to Airbus and the sale of Canadair Regional Jet CRJ Program to Mitsubishi Aircraft in June 2019 for a value of 483 million euros.

AW-BOINGBRAER.pngBoeing estimates five hundred engineers for the Embraer Évora Plant

The union of the Joint Venture between Embraer and Boeing will bring new projects and more dynamics to the Évora factory in Portugal. The synergy Embraer-Boeing in the civil field will allow the Portuguese factories to increase the intensity of work. The own project of Évora factories can be reinforced by the increase in the production of components destined to new models. «This will mean an increase in turnover, a higher volume of investment and an increase in the hiring of personnel, whose short-term prospects will require the hiring of another 100 engineers, but within four years, Embraer-Boeing will have to hire 500 more engineers», says João Gomes Cravinho, Minister of Defense of Portugal.

The business prospects are very good because the existing range in Portugal allows gains in scale between the various suppliers installed in the domestic market. Portugal immediately has the comfort of knowing that the world’s largest manufacturers, Airbus and Embraer, buy components for their aircraft from existing manufacturing plants in Portugal. In addition, if the regulators give the green light to the operation of The Boeing Brasil Commercial, before the end of 2019, Embraer will become an important ally of Boeing in Europe. The current Portuguese industrial framework «is adequate to attract new projects from the aeronautical cluster, although the process of deciding a new investment is not immediate, because it always involves decisions that take some time to mature», says the minister.

Embraer OGMA

Portugal has all the conditions to increase its importance in the aeronautical cluster; it currently provides components for executive aircraft, commercial aviation units for aviation, and military aviation projects, such as the recent KC390.

The contribution of the Portuguese industry to Embraer’s aircraft is focused on the manufacture of components for the 140-seat twin-engine E2 jet. These are favorable expectations, as the minister explains. The most relevant, according to João Gomes Cravinho, is that «Portugal did not exist on Boeing’s radar and now, suddenly, Boeing begins to think about the future of the factories that it has in Europe», at a time when the only factory Directly mounted was the United Kingdom, which is now under fire from the Brexit. This means that «Portugal will be the only European country where Boeing should invest heavily in industrial production, in the Évora units of Embraer and in the OGMA workshops, once it has approved the purchase of Embraer by the regulator. very positive that allow an increase in production and in the number of jobs, and this will be clarified even before the end of the year», said the Minister of Defense. These positive outlooks also include suppliers from the Évora factories of Embraer and the OGMA facilities in Alverca. A \ W

Empujando el reto producción del A321

a321neo-hamburg-airport.jpgAW | 2019 07 08 14:48 | INDUSTRY

Airbus reviews production factor of line A321

images (2)Faced with production delays at the Airbus A321 assembly line in Hamburg, Airbus has revised its downgrade slightly to target single-aisle aircraft of the A320 family by 2019. The aircraft manufacturer will still deliver even more aircraft than in 2018. I should even go back to Boeing, stuck in the 737 MAX crisis, for the first time since 2011.

AW-7000321XLR.png

The increase in production remains a challenge for Airbus. Faced with production delays at the A321 assembly line in Hamburg, Airbus has revised its downgrade slightly to target single-aisle aircraft of the A320 family by 2019. The aircraft manufacturer will still deliver even more aircraft than in 2018. I should even go back to Boeing, stuck in the 737 MAX crisis, for the first time since 2011.

Airbus pushes its advantage

While rival Boeing had to reduce its production from 737 to 42 copies per month, the European aircraft manufacturer continues to increase its production of mono runners of the A320 family, which accounted for 78% of its civil aircraft deliveries in 2018. aim to take over Boeing, this year, the title of the world’s leading manufacturer of civil aircraft was lost since 2011. It went from 50 to 57 aircraft per month last year, production rates of A319. A320 and A321 are expected to reach 60 per month this year and 63 in 2021. Airbus does not hide its desire to go further, to 65 aircraft per month between 2022-2023 and perhaps 70 per month by 2025. «We continue to study with our main subcontractors the possibility of going beyond 63 devices per month, but no decision is made», says Airbus. On June 28, 2019, Safran Chief Philippe Petitcolin whose affiliate CFM International (50/50 GE) provides more than half of the A320’s engines, said he had reached an «Agreement in principle» with Airbus to go further of the 63 individual corridors per month.

Revised deliveries to the downside

However, this increase in pace remains difficult. According to our information, Airbus even had to slightly reduce its target for deliveries of A320 in 2019, mainly due to the difficulties encountered in Hamburg to assemble the new versions of A321. The number of single-lane deliveries scheduled for 2019 has been reduced from 721 to 697 (compared to 626 in 2018). For the same reasons, the goal of 63 aircraft per month would have changed a month and a half until October 2021.

This is no reason to question, at this stage, the annual target of between 880 and 890 deliveries, all the combined models, on which the financial forecasts of Airbus are based. This official objective is in fact lower than the internal target (and in which premiums will be calculated) of 920 deliveries by 2019. However, this assumes that Airbus manages to resolve its difficulties at the Hamburg factory, where Production of A321.

Overcome by success

The commercial success of this extended version of the A320 has surpassed the manufacturer of the aircraft, capable of transporting up to 240 passengers in its Airbus Cabin Flex (ACF) version. Designed as a niche aircraft, the A321NEO has harvested almost 2,500 orders and now accounts for 40% of the order book. A success that the launch of a new powerful version, the A321NEO XLR, at the Paris Air Show, should expand even further. «The ACF A321 required modifying a section of the fuselage, which required adapting the industrial tool, but also involved more complex cabins, multiclasss, with more sophisticated video equipment, which helped extend manufacturing times», says one on Airbus.

An industrial challenge

From two days for an A320, the assembly time of an ACF A321 has been increased to three or four days. «We started to manufacture the equivalent of long-haul wide-body aircraft with methods and tools designed for medium-aisle single-aisle aircraft», Airbus says. Therefore, it was necessary to contract massively, train new recruits, change the framework and configure new production methods, with a greater use of robotics and, for the first time, the 3D modeling of production stations.

Methods that will be progressively implemented in other assembly lines. The first results are there: of 12 copies in 2018, shipments of A321NEO increased to 14 in the first quarter, 16 in the second quarter. But the pace is high, Airbus must deliver 138 units this year.

Release A321NEO XLR

Looking at the launch of the Airbus A321XLR at this year’s air show at Paris Air Show 2019, it may be instructive to go back two years before the 2017 event. That edition of the biennial show saw the launch, like the fanfare, of the Boeing 737-10 MAX, which at 43.8 m (143 feet 8 inches) in length, will be the largest variant of the redesigned family of narrow bodies. The two aircraft are aimed at different parts of the market: the MAX 10 will be able to fly 3,300nm (6,110km) and transport a maximum of 230 passengers, while the new A321NEO derivative will have a range of 4,700nm and a capacity for 270 passengers, making an imperfect comparison. However, apart from the place, there are the same parallels between the releases of the two narrow bodies.

At the end of the air show in Paris 2017, Boeing had secured 361 orders for the MAX 10 variant of 16 customers (nine airlines and seven lessors). However, of those commitments, 214 aircraft were covered by swaps from other Max models: a rate of just under 60%. Meanwhile, for the A321XLR, Airbus has insured 15 customers, all but one airline, who are taking a combined aircraft of 249. Of these, 112 units, 45%, are conversions from previous orders. While that is a conversion rate lower than that observed for the MAX 10, the difference between the members of the family is greater for the Airbus product: the A321XLR offers 700 nm of additional range over the current LR variant, while the performance of the Boeing jet is closest Its brother MAX 9, which can carry 220 passengers to more than 3,550nm.

While Boeing does not break down its orders for individual variants of MAX, the Cirium fleet analyzer suggests the US aircraft manufacturer. It has accumulated 531 orders for the 737-10 MAX, with 138 additional aircraft covered by tentative commitments.

Interestingly, in the wake of the 2017 show, Airbus announced that it had begun the final assembly of the Airbus Cabin Flex (ACF) version of the A321NEO, a narrow high-capacity body designed to carry up to 240 passengers, which became the basis for the current LR model of 4,000 nm. That implied an increase in the maximum takeoff weight (MTOW), to 97t, and the installation of an additional third central tank (ACT). For the XLR, the MTOW is increased by another 4t and the twinjet gets a permanent fuel tank in the rear center that has the equivalent of four ACTs, by the weight of only one.

The action of Airbus in the launching of the A321XLR is partly tactical, to interrupt the plans of Boeing for its new airplane of average market, that will arrive two years after the European plane, assuming a launch to the current calendar. Some airline buyers clearly see the XLR as the replacement for the long-sought 757.

The airlines

American Airlines, possibly the marquee customer for the type so far, will use its 50 aircraft to replace a 757-200 fleet, in addition to providing new narrow-body long-distance capabilities, says the airline’s President, Robert Isom. «I think adding some new A321XLRs will give us the opportunity to do things we have not thought about in the past».

The transatlantic routes will be a key area for the A321XLR: Aer Lingus is already withdrawing its small fleet from the Boeing twinjet in favor of the LR and will rely on that operation with the new variant. It also paves the way for new competitors in that market. «The incredible extended range of the A321XLR allows us to evaluate even more destinations abroad when thinking of the expansion of JetBlue Airways in European markets plagued by high premium rates and substandard services», says JetBlue CEO Robin Hayes .

JetBlue had announced in April 2019 its intention to convert 13 A321NEO to the A321NEO LR, to launch its first transatlantic services to London in 2021, from Boston and New York JFK. If you follow the great circle route, those are flights of 2.840nm and 3,000nm, respectively. Although not mentioned by Hayes, Chicago O’Hare at Heathrow is only 3,440nm, Miami 3,850nm and Dallas-Fort Worth 4,130nm.

It is interesting to note that Boeing had rejected the A321 for being on par with the 757. Three years after the type production ended, he praised the capabilities of his aircraft over those of his rival. «The 757 has the performance to serve short, medium and long range missions, the A321 does not». That, however, was based on the A321 of the older generation, with a range of 3,000 nm.

Committing to take 36 A321XLR last month, Qantas Group Executive President Alan Joyce said: «We already know that the A320 is a great airplane and this new variant can fly farther and more efficiently than any other single aisle aircraft in the market. «It can fly routes like Cairns-Tokyo or Melbourne-Singapore, which the existing narrow bodies can not, and that changes the economy of many potential routes to Asia so that they are not only physically possible but also financially attractive».

It should also be noted that around a third of the orders for the A321XLR come from the low-cost sector, in the form of Cebu Pacific (10), JetBlue (13) and a trio of operators: Frontier Airlines, JetSmart and Wizz Air that are backed by Indigo Partners (50).

While the low long-term cost is an area where operators have had mixed success, the XLR opens the way for more competitors in space without the need for radical changes in the common characteristics of the fleet. Of course, it remains to be seen if passengers enjoy being confined within a narrow-body fuselage, especially one in a low-cost configuration, for sectors of up to 8 hours of flight range.
