Airlines Are Reportedly Being Made to Ration Fuel at an Australian Airport

Airlines flying to and from Australia’s Melbourne Airport on Friday were told they could only receive half of their normal jetfuel after a series of supply disruptions, three aviation industrysources said.

The shortage meant some international flights would stop in other Australian cities to pick up fuel en route to their destinations, which is costly for airlines and can lead to missed connections by passengers, the sources told Reuters.

Melbourne Airport said in a statement that temporary fuelrationing measures had been put in place.

A spokesman for Exxon Mobil, the operator of the airport‘s joint user fuel facility, said it was working with customers and industry partners to manage the fuel supply issue.

“The supply issue has arisen following disruptions in recent weeks to jet fuel deliveries from multiple fuel terminals acrossMelbourne, which are in the process of being resolved,” the spokesman said.

A Qantas spokesman said services from Melbourne to Hong Kong and Singapore on Friday that were normally non-stop would need to stop in Sydney to refuel, but domestic services would not be affected since they could carry extra fuel from the originating airport.

Board of Airline Representatives of Australia Executive Director Barry Abrams said that airlines were doing all they can to minimise the disruption to passengers, but the main responsibility lies with the jet fuel suppliers.

Representatives of international carriers Emirates, Etihad Airways, Cathay Pacific, SingaporeAirlines and Air New Zealand could not be reached immediately for comment. A\W

Airbus completes first flight of A350-1000, challenger to Boeing’s big twinjets

The largest version of the Airbus A350 widebody twinjet made its first flight Thursday in Toulouse, France, achieving an important milestone in the European planemaker’s strategic sales battle with Boeing.

The largest version of the Airbus A350 widebody twinjet made its first flight Thursday in Toulouse, France, achieving an important milestone in the European planemaker’s strategic sales battle with Boeing.

The A350-1000, seating 366 passengers, is approximately the same size as Boeing’s best-selling current widebody, the 777-300ER, which typically seats 365 passengers. The new Airbus jet is an inch longer than Boeing’s, though the 777’s cabin is 9 inches wider.

The A350’s key advantage is that it’s a lighter, all-composite airplane with new engines, giving it longer range and higher fuel efficiency than the 777. That’s why new sales of the 777-300ER have plummeted.

In response, Boeing has launched the new, even larger 777X model, the first version of which is due to enter service in 2020 and will seat more than 400 passengers.

Though both manufacturers are toying with the idea of even larger models of both jet families, the fact that Boeing has sold more than 800 of its 777-300ERs since 1990 suggests that the A350-1000 may be the right size to hit the sweet spot of the big twin-jet market. So far, Airbus has booked 195 orders for the A350-1000. Meanwhile, the four-turbine Boeing 747 and Airbus’s own A380 superjumbo struggle to find buyers.

Zafar Khan, an analyst at Societe Generale in London, said the price of crude oil would need to drop “much lower” than $50 a barrel for four-engine planes to have a chance of a renaissance. “As long as fuel prices remain at elevated levels then two-engine jets willclearly prevail,” he said.

Before the advent of the so-called “big twin” aircraft, older two-engine wide-bodies such as the 767 and A330 were limited to medium-haul markets such as the north Atlantic, partly because of practical limits on how far they could fly in the event of one turbine failing. The 777 cast off those shackles by winning certification for flights as far as three hours from the nearest airport.

The standard A350-900 has U.S. Federal Aviation Administration approval for up to five hours or 2,000 nautical miles of diversionary flying on a single engine, making possible trips from Southeast Asia and Australia to the U.S. In a denser configuration the new -1000 will be able to carry 440 people, less than 100 short of the A380’s standard 525-passenger payload, though the double-decker could accommodate as many as 800 seats in a single class.

The airline industry’s appetite for bigger twin-engine planes was revealed when Airbus scrapped a shrunken A350-800 variant, which was deemed too small at 280 seats, and opted instead to upgrade the A330 for shorter routes.

With the A350-1000 attracting fewer than 200 orders, versus about 600 for the baseline -900, airlines appear to be holding out for something still bigger, though Francois Caudron, Airbus’s senior vice president for marketing, said in Toulouse it’s not yet ready to commit to a double-stretch of the plane, dubbed the A350-2000. The -1000 already addresses a sweet-spot in the market and is 20 tons lighter and 25 percent more fuel efficient than Boeing’s 777-300ER, he said.

Boeing, though, is adding more seats to its best-selling wide-body, with new slimline berths taking the total to 396 while still retaining three classes.

Twinjet capacity will increase still further from 2020, when the U.S. company introduces the 777X upgrade, the largest version of which will seat as many as 425 people in three classes. A bigger version is under consideration able to take upwards of 450 travelers, making it a true jumbo in its own right.

All told, the A350, 787 and 777 have unfilled orders totaling more than 1,950 planes, versus just 29 for the 747 and 121 for the A380. The four-engine Airbus A340, which emerged around the time of the 777, is already out of production.

The A350-1000’s debut flight means Airbus has met its goal of getting the model into the air before the end of 2016, with Qatar Airways Ltd. scheduled to be the first carrier to deploy the aircraft next year. The manufacturer is still racing to deliver the 50 A350-900s promised this year amid delays in the supply of interior fittings from suppliers including Paris-based Safran SA. A\W

Huelga de pilotos en Lufthansa

AW | 2016 11 25 05:38 | AIRLINES

Lufthansa Pilot Strike Grounds Hundreds of Flights for Second Day

A walkout by Lufthansa pilots that has led to almost 2,000 flight cancellations has cost the German airline about 20 million euros ($21 million) over two days and weighed on its mid-term bookings, a board member said on Thursday.

The walkout, the 14th since early 2014, began at midnight on Wednesday and was due to run until Friday, ratcheting up pressure on management in a long-running pay dispute and threatening further disruptions for travellers.

“Not only have we suffered severe damage (from the strike), but we’re also noticing from mid-term booking numbers that customer behavior is changing,” Harry Hohmeister said.

Lufthansa  has cancelled 1,800 flights, or just under a third of scheduled services, for Wednesday and Thursday, disrupting the plans of over 215,000 travelers.

Friday’s strike affects short-haul flights only and Lufthansa said it will publish details of Friday’s cancellations by midday on Thursday.

Pilot strikes in 2014 cost Lufthansa 222 million euros, roughly 21 million euros per day, according to the IW Cologne Institute for Economic Research. In 2015, walkouts by pilots and cabin crew cost it 231 million euros, around 30 million per day.

Lufthansa, led by CEO Carsten Spohr, insists that despite a record profit in 2015, it has no choice but to cut costs to compete with leaner rivals such as Ryanair on short-haul and Emirates on long-haul flights.

It has already agreed deals with the main unions representing ground staff and cabin crew in Germany, leaving an agreement with its pilots outstanding.

The union, which fears a race to the bottom in terms of pay and conditions, wants an average annual pay increase of 3.7% for 5,400 pilots in Germany over a five-year period from 2012. Lufthansa has offered 2.5% spread over the six years to 2019.

The airline has urged the union to enter mediation, but the union said it first wants to see a better offer.

Despite the row with its German pilots, Lufthansa is also moving forward with plans to expand lower cost operations, using a Eurowings unit based in Austria. It is in talks over bringing operations from Air Berlin and Brussels Airlines into the Eurowings platform.

The row is mirrored at rival Air France-KLM, which has also seen pilot strikes in France over plans to lower costs. A\W

Aeropuerto Rosario necesita reparación de pista

DMi 687

AW | 2016 11 24 12:30 | AIRPORTS

Rosario Airport needs repair of track

The increase in flights ended up breaking the runway at Rosario International Airport, which revealed other flaws in the air terminal. Airplanes must be towed from the platform to the taxiway, with consequent delay in operations; The smaller aircraft must park in the grass and when it rains are bogged down, and the meteorologists work inside a container. This panorama generated a great discomfort between the pilots and took to the authorities of the airport to manage the closing of the terminal once it finishes the season.

According to reported by pilots, the rupture of the platform was accelerated with the increase of the operations of international commercial flights with large airplanes. A situation that, they predict, will intensify in the coming days with the increase of flights by the beginning of the summer season to Mar del Plata and Punta del Este, and since December 7 with more connections to Ezeiza and Cordoba.

«These operations were approved by the aeronautical authority based on requests from the airport administration for the sole purpose of collecting airport charges, without adequate infrastructure and support guarantees,» the sources consulted by LaCapital questioned.

The pilots explained that the increase of two to ten flights of daily commercial aircraft accelerated the breaking of the runway, «which does not allow the natural movement of the machines, as well as the presence of large amount of loose stones, which can be absorbed by The engines with the consequences of the case,» they said.

«In order to avoid this, the security authority took action, which means that aircraft are not on platform and must be towed to and from the runway, causing delays and congestion in all aircraft movements and the consequent Discomfort of passengers, easily observable in the noon hours,» they explained.

The amount of current flights and those expected in the summer – estimated – will accelerate the break, «with the risk of a total closure of the air station, in full season,» they said.

On the grass. The deterioration of the platform means that all smaller airplanes can not be parked there and must do so in the hangar area, «whose ground is not in condition or properly marked, and without sufficient personnel to order them, causing chaos in the area. Movement, with danger for the passengers and the same airplanes», they estimated.

In this scenario, these limitations impair any type of flight, such as health services or organ transplantation.

Resultado de imagen para AEROPUERTO ROSARIO

According to them, in order to mitigate the consequences of the deterioration of the platform the airport administration decided to enable «a parking lot in the grass» for small aircraft, which is rendered useless for several days whenever it rains, «because the planes are buried», they detailed .

The group that professionals who usually operate in the terminal of Fisherton pointed out that although a meteorological station was recently constructed, the meteorological personnel are currently working inside a metal container. «The station has not yet been enabled due to infrastructure failures,» they said.

The pilots questioned that «the beautification of the front and lighting of the airport, instead of prioritizing the repair of the internal streets, which today complicate the movement of the airplanes, has been invested.»

For now, the operation of the airport is quite complicated and the arrival of the aircraft is alternated with the repair tasks of the operating platform. A\W

Argentina to bid for air routes

Resultado de imagen para flybondiThe arrival of new cabotage airlines is accelerating: the Government will tender new air routes in December

These meetings have not taken place since 2005; Flybondi and Avian were the most active companies; Once assigned, should start flying in six months

The last week of the year, the government will call a hearing to grant air routes to companies that want to start flying in the country or want to expand their operation. It will be a year-end gift for the sector that has not held such a meeting since 2005. There will be defined the true interest of new airlines to offer their services in Argentina and the possibility that they will prosper the six projects that will present.

The meeting will be held between December 26 and 27, according to government sources, who also said that the initiative came after a request from the low-cost carrier Flybondi and Avian Airlines, the local subsidiary of Avianca, which it bought in March MacAir, the company of the Macri family.

«The hearing operates as a starting line for take-off since six months later the winning airlines will have to start operating»

The hearing, in addition to the administrative act of delivery of routes and certificates, operates as a start-up line for take-off since six months later the winning airlines will have to start operating.

Interested airlines

Just the two companies that requested routes, Avian and Flybondi, have been very active in recent weeks. The two have already begun the search for pilots and Avian already has a delegation in Toulouse, French city where they manufacture the 68-seater ATR aircraft that will use to fly cabotage in the country.

Avian bought from the French company 12 turboprop aircraft to fly in the country, whose first unit will be delivered before the end of the year. Each plane has a cost of approximately 18 million dollars and a range to fly between three and four hours. The procedure for them to operate is not so simple as these planes are not certified in the country, although some smaller ones of the same family that once flew the disappeared LAER.

The operation of the purchase order was confirmed by the manufacturer himself in a statement in which the company’s top executives reported on the transaction. As it transcendió, German Efromovich, number one of Avianca, would be in Argentina this week to comment the operation. It is speculated that the company would base its operation in Cordoba although in the last hours the possibility also emerged of Tucumán.

Flybondi also called on pilots but he still did not decide what type of aircraft to use. In addition, the low cost company, that wants to settle in the country, was by these weeks finishing the investment wheel that had initiated long ago.

These companies are joined by other stakeholders who also passed through the country. The project of Declan Ryan, one of the members of the Ryan family owners of Ryan Air also maintains its interest and will have to see if it is written in the call of year-end, like the owners of Norwegian Air, that crossed Argentina Looking for opportunities for your company.

They are not the only ones. In the last few days, it transpired that in addition to Andes, a company that operates MD aircraft announced that it will also request new routes to expand its offer and incorporate to its fleet three Airbus 319.

At the end of the year the hearing will be held and then it will be a matter of waiting if new airlines will fly in the country. The countdown has already begun. A\W

Vancouver airport workers issue strike deadline, say flights may be affected

Swissport employees provide cleaning and baggage services, but YVR says contingency plans are in place

Flights at Vancouver International Airport may be disrupted this weekend, according to a union that delivered a strike deadline Wednesday afternoon, but airport officials say contingency plans are in place.

In a statement, Todd Haverstock, chairman of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), Transport District Lodge 140, said the union has set a deadline of 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 26.

The workers are employees of Swissport International Ltd, which provides baggage and grooming services and manages the airport’s baggage belt services. The employees service more than 20 airlines that use the airport, according to the union.

Altogether, the IAM represents nearly 4,000 airport workers total, but Haverstock added that in the event of a strike by Lodge 140, the rest of the airport’s employees would be bound by law to go to work. Swissport employs 855 workers, Haverstock said.

Haverstock said the union has been without a contract for more than a year. A tentative agreement was reached earlier this month, but on Monday the union voted against the agreement. The same day, the union voted 71 per cent in favour of a strike.

Airport hopeful for quick resolution

In a statement, YVR officials said contingency plans were being put in place, with airlines co-ordinating directly with Swissport, and that there is currently no impact to operations.

However, officials did not guarantee that no flights would be affected by any possible job action.

«YVR remains hopeful that the matter will be resolved quickly with an agreement that is favourable for both parties. YVR recommends passengers check the status of their flight with their airlines,» the statement said.

Officials emphasized Swissport does not provide baggage handling for Air Canada, American Airlines, Delta Airlines, United Airlines, US Airways, Swift Air, Central Mountain Air, Air North and Aeromexico.

Rich Leach, Swissport’s general manager for their YVR Operations, said they were in still discussions with the union, and were optimistic a «mutually beneficial outcome» could be reached. A\W

AW | 2016 11 24 05:44 | AIRLINES

The Rosario Airport adds a daily flight of the airline Avianca with connection in Tucumán

The Colombian company would start operating between May and June of next year. Governor Manzur and the airline have already signed the agreement

The Rosario International Airport «Islas Malvinas» will have a daily flight to Tucumán from the middle of next year, operated by Avianca, which will allow reaching international destinations through the connections offered by the Colombian airline.

The governor of Tucumán, Juan Manzur, and Avianca executives signed today the agreement that will allow the Colombian airline to operate from next year in the province with a package of flights that includes the countries of the Zone of Integration of the Center West Of South America (Zicosur).

The installation of the airline will generate an investment of around 70 million dollars and will contribute about 1,000 jobs directly and indirectly. In addition, it will strengthen the tourist activity of the province and the region, as highlighted by the provincial authorities and representatives of the airline during the event held today in the Rural Society of Tucumán.

According to the authorities, the airline, which will start operating officially between May and June of next year, will make fifteen daily cabotage flights that will be added to the ten that already operate the «Benjamín Matienzo» airport.

Although the official request to Rosario to cover the route between Tucuman and Fisherton Airport was not yet made, the local air station admitted that there were some informal conversations but that no official request had yet arrived, although they considered that there would be no No obstacle to handling the permits, reason why they consider that simply the officialization of the flight is lacking.

The destinations include cities of the NOA and NEA and from Tucumán you can travel, besides Rosario, to Salta with five daily frequencies, Córdoba (three), Resistencia, Iguazú, Catamarca, La Rioja, Santiago del Estero, San Juan, Mendoza and Posadas , The latter with one flight per day.

International services will be added to Iquique (Chile), Santa Cruz (Bolivia), Asunción (Paraguay), Lima (Peru) and Florianópolis (Brazil), all with connections to different parts of the world.

«The arrival of Avianca will improve the aerial connectivity of the province,» said Manzur, who said that the company «will start operating between May and June 2017» and explained that now «the great challenge will be to adapt the local airport; The necessary comforts and make it international, in addition to training the staff. «

According to Manzur, Avianca is «one of the largest companies in the world», with a large fleet of aircraft that does not exceed four years of age and its disembarkation in the province «triggers a series of positive actions that will allow the Tucumanans to be better , With more work since the company will take 250 people in a progressive way, to which we must add the indirect positions that this movement generates. «

From Avianca they anticipated that they intend «to begin to render service in record time». The businessman Germán Efromovich said that the Colombian airline does not intend to compete with the other companies that operate in the province: «We come to fill a space that demands to be occupied because the competition does not act,» he said.

Fokker modificará sistemas ADS-B Dash 8s de Iceland Air

Resultado de imagen para BOMBARDIER DE HAVILLAND DASH 8Q400

AW | 2016 11 23 12:35 | INDUSTRY

Fokker to Modify ADS-B Out Systems on Air Iceland Dash 8s

The services division of Fokker will modify the Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS-B out) systems on-board Air Iceland’s fleet of Dash 8-Q200 and Q400 aircraft.

Once updated, the systems will enable the Bombardier aircraft to emit relevant data to air traffic management organizations, including the jet’s identity, GPS location and direction of the flight.

Fokker, a division of GKN Aerospace, added that the systems will enable Air Iceland to optimize airspace, fly more economical routes and minimize the use of ground radar stations.

Netherlands-headquartered Fokker has made a play for operators looking to update their ADS-B systems, following a 2010 FAA ruling mandated on all flying aircraft flying in both Europe and the U.S. by January 1, 2020.

The retrofit involves an upgrade or replacement of two major cockpit systems: the ATC Transponder and GPS Receiver. A\W

Boeing restructures in three business units

The aerospace company creates a new service division to diversify its revenues

Boeing reorganizes itself. The American aerospace company essentially creates a third pillar in its corporate structure, dedicated to global services and that puts the commercial aviation and defense and space divisions. The multinational takes advantage of the change to place Kevin McAllister as the new manager of the unit that manufactures the B737, B747, B777 and B787 passenger aircraft.

The creation of this new unit has been preparing for a long time to be able to diversify its business beyond assembling aircraft, military fighters or rockets. The services and components generate, in principle, more stable incomes because they are not subject to the ups and downs in the production. In addition, as CEO Dennis Muilenburg explains, it is increasingly lucrative. A\W
