The Survival of British Airways.
British will receive Boeing 787-10
British Airways’ first Boeing 787-10 makes its debut in times of pandemic
British Airways (BA) will receive its first Boeing 787-10 to its fleet arriving at Heathrow/London Airport this Thursday 21 May 2020 in the morning. The newly manufactured Boeing 787-10 would take off from the Boeing facility in Charleston, South Carolina to receive him at the handover and reception ceremony for a handful of invited BA, public relations, and media executives. Around 8 a.m. (hours subject to change) on Thursday 5/21 the company’s first long Dreamliner would arrive. British Airways will receive the first Boeing 787-10 out of an order of 12 units. The inaugural commercial flight will be London-Atlanta.
Boeing 787-10
With the arrival of the Boeing 787-10, delayed from a previous delivery in January 2020, British Airways will become one of the few airlines in the world to fly all three Dreamliner models: Boeing 787-8 (12) and Boeing 787-9 (17). Unlike the Airbus A350s, BA’s super-stretched Boeing 787-10 is equipped with eight first-class suites, with the same design as the 787-9, a suite the airline internally refers to as the product ‘Prime’.

British Airways is moving toward optimal standardization of eight First suites in its Boeing 787 and 777 fleet, in a trend away from larger first-class cabins in favor of more business-class seats. And when it comes to business class, the Boeing 787-10, of course, has BA’s latest business class Suites Club, with 48 of the premium banks, which, ironically, are more private than their first-class counterparts, spread over two cabins. It is followed by 35 premium World Traveler Plus economy seats and 165 economy World Traveler seats, while there is also end-to-end WiFi.
Wearing the crisis
The health crisis has strongly affected airlines, and British Airways has no exception. «Most of its fleet is aground and most of its routes suspended, hoping that an unstable recovery will take uncertain shape. Parent company IAG says it does not expect passenger demand to recover to 2019 levels for several years. Some of us have worked in aviation through the global financial crisis, the Sars outbreak, and September 11. What is happening right now as a result of Covid-19 is more serious than any of these events. crises of global proportions like no other we have ever known», Alex Cruz, CEO of British Airways, told staff in a message titled The Survival of British Airways.
The airline will reduce its workforce by nearly 30%, cutting up to 12,000 jobs in a painful restructuring aimed at shrinking the airline group as it settled into a protracted recession.
Delayed aircraft deliveries
Airplane deliveries are also being delayed, but some already paid will see the planes used to raise money to top up liquidity at a time when burning cash is a primary concern.
«Since several planes are already financed from a cash point of view, it makes sense that we take the plane because we will have paid the pre-delivery payments, so when we take the plane and then put the financing in place, there actually it’s a cash benefit for us», IAG CEO Willie Walsh said last month at the airline’s first-quarter earnings briefing.
At its four IAG group airlines, British Airways, Aer Lingus, Iberia and Vueling, the parent company still plans to take nine long-range aircraft in 2021, a number that will likely include at least some of the first six Boeing 787-10s initially scheduled. by 2020, along with some Airbus A350s. However, IAG will almost halve its 2021 delivery schedule from 17 aircraft to nine, which is expected to include British Airways’ first Boeing 777-9 aircraft. “I think when we look at our fleet plan, we have seen a very significant change in what the plan was when we announced it in November of last year to what it will be for 2021 and 2022, and it is necessary to take into account the flexibility we have with the existing fleet and the leased aircraft”, said Walsh. ![]()

Under devastating revenue pressure amid the pandemic, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and empowered employees to deny boarding at the departure gate for passengers not wearing a face mask and provide masks passengers who do not have one. But if those passengers were to remove their masks upon entering the plane, airline employees are not authorized to force them to put it back on. It now appears that an airline is considering reducing social distancing measures, despite passenger complaints about too many people on board. So far, seven flight attendants have died from Coronavirus, and at least 250 AFA members have tested positive for the virus. «Flight attendants, pilots, and airlines are responding to COVID-19 with increased security measures, including the requirement that passengers and crew wear masks. Airlines are implementing policies on the fly, essentially without coordination or direction of the federal government», added Sara Nelson.

Shareholder Stelios Haji-Ioannou turns whistleblowing into a pursuit of rewards for angry shareholders
Haji-Ioannou’s offer to pay for the information has been criticized by those on the front line of the UK complaint of wrongdoing. Andrew Samuels, now a partner at WBI Consulting, developed the Barclays Bank whistleblowing program that resulted in a $ 780,000 fine imposed on Barclays CEO Jes Staley for the attempt to expose a whistleblower in June 2016, describes the idea of a reward as heinous and legally questionable. «I think the term whistleblower is absolutely wrong on this front. A whistleblower is broadly defined as someone who raises a public interest concern, not someone who is hunting for rewards to help shareholders. This reads a lot like being in Stelios’ interest», says Andrew Samuels. On the subject of «public interest», Andrew Samuels cautions that it can often be subjective as to what is really in the public interest.
