JetSmart buscará adquirir colombiana Viva Air
Oposición de Avianca responde a la competencia

La aerolínea chilena JetSMART Airlines ha anunciado el Martes 07/02 el interés de entablar negociaciones para adquirir el 100% de las acciones de la aerolínea Viva Air Colombia. “Creemos que una transacción entre JetSMART y Viva Air permitirá mantener el modelo ultra bajo costo en Colombia y así seguir ofreciendo más rutas a menores precios. Tenemos una visión de largo plazo para expandirnos en Sudamérica y estamos en posición de continuar invirtiendo en nuestro crecimiento”, dijo en un comunicado el CEO de la compañía, Estuardo Ortiz. JetSMART Airlines Chile, parte de Indigo Partners, el fondo de inversión estadounidense que controla otras cinco aerolíneas, tiene los recursos, la capacidad y experiencia para negociar y cerrar este movimiento de manera ágil.

El ingreso de la firma chilena se transformaría en competencia directa de Avianca Airlines, quien desde hace meses está tratando de fusionarse con Viva Air Colombia, pero las regulaciones colombianas han puesto obstáculos para la sinergia. La Aeronáutica Civil de Colombia (Aerocivil) ha rechazado la propuesta de unión Avianca-Viva Air. La fusión propuesta Avianca-Viva Air crearía el mayor holding de Sudamérica si se aprueba, pero se enfrenta al rechazo de la colombiana Ultra Air.

Ante el anuncio de JetSMART Group, Avianca respondió a la decisión de la aerolínea chilena por medio de un comunicado, argumentando que la declaración de interés de JetSMART «no es una opción real para solucionar la crisis de Viva, tanto JetSMART como su segundo mayor accionista American Airlines operan en el mercado colombiano y por lo tanto cualquier transacción requeriría de las mismas aprobaciones que necesita Avianca para la integración con Viva Air».

El proceso de obtención de permisos en el cual Avianca y Viva Air Colombia llevan seis meses «no podría siquiera empezar sino hasta después de que exista un acuerdo para que JetSMART adquiera a Viva Air, por lo que esta transacción podría estar sujeta, no solo a aprobaciones en Colombia, sino también en los otros mercados en que participan Viva junto con JetSMART y/o American Airlines, incluyendo países como Perú, Argentina, Chile y Estados Unidos. Ni Avianca, ni sus accionistas, han recibido ofertas para traspasar su participación económica en Viva».

Finalmente, Avianca criticó duramente la decisión de la low cost chilena que consideran que la declaración de interés «tiene como único objetivo utilizar una propuesta, a todas luces inviable, para generar una distracción a la solicitud de integración de Viva y Avianca».

JetSMART Airlines Colombia

La aerolínea solicitó previamente en Noviembre 2022 abrir una nueva subsidiaria en Colombia. La Autoridad de Aviación Civil del país, sin embargo, decidió retrasar la aprobación de JetSMART Columbia hasta que la aerolínea pudiera confirmar que tiene la capacidad de operar las 111 rutas solicitadas.

La apuesta de la empresa de JetSMART Airlines Chile es expandir su negocio en la región que actualmente mantiene operaciones domésticas en Chile, Perú y Argentina. “Creemos en el potencial del mercado colombiano. Nuestra alternativa redundará en beneficio de los usuarios, fortaleciendo la libre competencia en el sector y promoverá el turismo y la conectividad en el país”, señaló Estuardo Ortíz.

JetSMART Airlines Group apunta a un mercado turístico, comercio y negocio, además de tener un gran intercambio de residentes con otros países latinoamericanos. A juicio del ejecutivo, es fundamental aportar a la conectividad, no solo entre capitales. JetSMART forma parte de la cartera de aerolíneas del fondo estadounidense Indigo Partners, que incluye a Frontier Airlines en Estados Unidos, Wizz Air en Hungría, Volaris Airlines en México, Lynx en Canadá y Cebu Pacific en Filipinas.

Avianca opposition responds to competition

Chilean airline JetSMART Airlines announced on Tuesday 07/02 the interest of establishing negotiations to acquire 100% of the shares of the Viva Air Colombia airline. “We believe that a transaction between JetSMART and Viva Air will allow to maintain the ultra low cost in Colombia and thus continue to offer more routes to lower prices.
