Delta Airlines fallo informático del 8/8

AW | 2016 10 01 16:11 | SAFETY / SECURITY

Did hackers strike Delta?

Delta Airlines computer failure of 8/8

On August 8, 2016 at 1:36 PM, Delta Airlines sent out this startling tweet: “1:30 p.m. ET: Delta has canceled 451 flights due to a power outage, while operating about 1,679 of its nearly 6,000 scheduled flights”.

Hundreds of flights were cancelled and over a thousand were delayed, stranding countless passengers.

Now, nearly two months later, it’s pretty clear to security experts that what was labeled a power outage, was probably not an outage at all. Maybe it was a simple computer hack, maybe a computer malfunction. Most probably it was a cyber attack.

At the time, OAN (One America News Network), which reported that Georgia Power spokesman John Kraft, said that a circuit breaker that needed to be reset caused the outage. It is called a switchgrear.

And according to the CBS News website: “A power outage at an Atlanta facility early Monday initiated a cascading meltdown, according to the airline, which is also based in Atlanta. The FBI said it has no evidence that the Atlanta outage was a hack.”

But there was one glaring problem with that explanation for the outage: No one else near, or around, or on the grid with Delta suffered any electrical disturbances during that period. And Georgia Power received not one complaint about a power outage. In fact, a spokesperson for Georgia Power told The Associated Press that the company believes that it was the failure of Delta equipment that caused the airline’s power outage. They said no other customers lost power. That piece of information was also included in the CBS News piece.

DEBKA, a Middle East and counter terror report based in Israel, conducted their own independent investigation into the shut down and confirmed the statement made by Georgia Power. Moreover, Debka suggested that Delta was crippled because of a cyber attack.

Generally speaking, huge companies that rely on their computers have backup as well as multiple alternative electrical sources to make certain that something like a power outage does not happen to them. A hack, however, is much harder to fix.  Even the Delta information boards were not showing old information that was stored in the cache which is supposed to go into default mode in the event of a malfunction or a reset.

The likely cyber attack on Delta is a nightmare for every business and every secure network around the world. The ramifications are startling.

Delta is the third largest airline in the world. Every single component of their vast computer system was affected and shut down. Ticketing, boarding passes, cargo, takeoffs and landings, plane scheduling, ground crews, plane crews, maintenance, seating, upgrades, suppliers, payments.

It should have been obvious from the get go that this was more than a power shortage that needed a reset. No global company, Delta Airlines included, maintains all of their servers and routers in a single place.  And wherever they are, they are located deep beneath the ground. And each of these locations has several independent backup electricity systems in the event of a blackout.

In addition, because of that ubiquitous storage system called “the cloud” everything should be immediately or almost immediately accessible through other access points.

Delta, like most major companies, should have a disaster recovery plan that they have rehearsed and tested just so that when there is a problem, their clients or travelers will never even feel the disruption.

There still exists a small possibility that the August disruption of Delta was due to a malfunction, but only a slight possibility. A domino affect caused by a malfunction that impacted multiple continents is very hard to imagine.

A more likely scenario: malware was inserted into Delta computers months ago. Then, on command, the spyware shut down Delta’s computers and blocked emergency protocols from automatically kicking in to protect the company.  Without a safety plan in action, there was no way for Delta to function. They could not even do something as simple as hand write boarding passes because they could not confirm seats.

Giving Delta the benefit of the doubt, let’s say they did not immediately know that they had been attacked. But by now they should know. And so should everyone else. Whoever is responsible for the possible Delta attack will try again. Next time, their attack will prove more sophisticated.

In response to The Observer’s query, Delta spokesman Michael Thomas asserted that theAugust 8 “outage was definitely not a cyber attack”. A\W

Aerolíneas will close the year with a red US $ 300 million

The CEO of the company said projected losses 1000 million, implying a 70% improvement; entrepreneurs wink

When the new management took over the leadership of Aerolíneas Argentinas, the company was about to lose in 2016 about $ 1 billion. However, he said today Isela Costantini, president of the company, after the changes began to do, they could close the year with a red box lowest 70% from US $ 300 million.

«This year we project that the company would lose 1 billion dollars. But we did not have the courage to ask for that sum and started working,» said Costantini, who spoke today at the 37th Annual Convention of the Argentine Institute of Finance (IAEF). «Today we talk about it close with a 70% improvement on what we had projected. On a cash of US $ 300 million negative,» he predicted.

«We believe we can have a company that does not lose money»
Isela Costantini

According Costantini, the potential of resources of Aerolíneas Argentinas allows them to think that the flag carrier could reach zero deficit in four years. «We believe that we can have a company that does not lose silver, and you can still connect to the country and people who want to visit the country. The international routes are profitable, there is only one route that we are working,» he explained. «We see growth, I am quite optimistic,» he said.

When he assumed the leadership of the company, Costantini acknowledged that found a company «that had no idea of the notion of debt he had.» Only about overdue debt with Boeing by aircraft had been acquired had more than US $ 200 million, to which liabilities accounted for engines and aircraft, which could not be ignored.

The president of Aerolíneas, however, referred to the change that society demands in the country and applied to the company, acknowledged that may involve a hard process, for which he asked for patience and involvement in society.

In this regard, he referred to the strike declared by the pilots last week, which caused the massive suspension of flights, demanding better pay 40 percent. «On one hand we congratulated for having tough positions and on the other, people who could not travel criticizing us and said we had to privatize the company. We all want a better country,» Isela began. «Who travels Aerolíneas? The middle and upper classes. Who subsidizes? Many times people will never fly. We have to break that mentality, because when the dialogue table is open, the cultural transformation implies that contribute each one from his place, even if we put uncomfortable,» he said.

Costantini sent a conciliatory to the unions of the company, to consider «strategic» message. «I will continue to negotiate with the unions, I can not imagine one without unions Aerolíneas Argentinas,» he said.

For the executive, unions must be «strategic partners» of the business, «they understand why the company has to be profitable.» «We continue to believe that we have to share with them both desaliños as problems to be negotiated,» he said.

At the beginning of his administration, Costantini said the company had 12,400 employees and 12,000 are today. «We are opposed to take the people of La Campora. The flying is not just people who voted for Macri. I believe in diversity. All employees who wish to get on the plane with the same ethics and vain integrity remain in the company. Those who is not opposed,» he said. A\W

AW | 2016 09 30 13:27 | AIRLINES

Barbie Peek, director of business development for the Port of Huntsville, said GLO is pleased with the initial number of bookings for the service.

«We need the community to support it in order to make it grow,» she said. «The next steps would be adding additional days, and then hopefully the need would be that we could add multiple flights on peak days. «All fares still include taxes, fees and three checked bags, as well as free snacks and non-alcoholic beverages,» he said.

GLO will use a 30-passenger, Saab 340B aircraft with speeds of 300 mph for the new route. Corporate Flight Management (CFM) will operate the service, which will create 150 direct and indirect jobs in Huntsville and have an estimated $1 million economic impact.

Fayard said the arrival of GLO in Huntsville is timely as the Gulf and Mid-South regions of the U.S. remain underserved by existing air carriers.

«GLO is very excited to finally connect Huntsville and New Orleans by air,» he said. «We’re also looking forward to bringing New Orleanians to Huntsville to experience all the Tennessee Valley has to offer.» A\W

Lufthansa approves the purchase of all of Brussels Airlines

The German company plans to integrate the Belgian firm in its subsidiary ‘low cost’ Eurowings

Lufthansa Group approved on Wednesday to exercise the purchase option on the remaining 55% stake in Brussels Airlines had no German air group in the hands of SN Airholding, parent of the Belgian airline, which is expected later this year. In 2008, Lufthansa disbursed 65 million euros to acquire the 45% it has on Brussels Airlines. The amount you will pay far has not leaked, although the Belgian newspaper L’Echo ‘was estimated at 2.5 million the amount that would be willing to disburse Lufthansa now.

The decision by the supervisory board of Deutsche Lufthansa paves the way to complete the full acquisition of SN Airholding, and the full integration of Brussels Airlines to the German group, an operation that expect to finish in early 2017.

In mid-April, Lufthansa Group agreed with Brussels Airlines be given until September this year to decide on the complete acquisition of its subsidiary.

The German group, which controls 45% stake in Brussels Airlines since September 2008, was bound to rule in June on the possibility of acquiring the remaining 55% of the company, this period was initially extended until August and then to a month of September.

Both companies then justified the postponement to the terrorist attacks that took place at the airport in Brussels on March 22 and its impact.

Brussels Airlines has 49 aircraft today and plans to integrate Lufthansa spend the Belgian airline signature of low-cost Eurowings (about 90 aircraft). A\W
