AW-7008766787677.jpgBoeing statement on the 737 MAX

Boeing-Company-LogoBoeing statement on MCAS functionality in the 737 MAX

The Boeing Company has communicated that each plane delivered to our customers, including the Boeing 737 MAX, were made with all the flight data and information necessary to operate safely that are provided in the flight deck on the main screen of the platform Of flight. This information is provided full time in the main field of vision of the pilots, and always has been.

Air velocity, attitude, altitude, vertical speed, heading and engine power settings are the main parameters used by flight crews to operate the aircraft safely on a normal flight. The bar agitator and the tilt limit indicator are the main characteristics used for the operation of the aircraft at high angles of attack. All recommended pilot actions, checklists and training are based on these main indicators. Neither the angle of attack indicator nor the AOA alert in disagreement are necessary for the safe operation of the aircraft. They only provide complementary information, and have never been considered safety features in commercial transport aircraft.

The Boeing design requirements for the 737 MAX included the AOA Disagree alert as a standard, stand-alone feature, in line with Boeing’s fundamental design philosophy of maintaining common elements with the 737NG. In 2017, several months after starting deliveries of 737 MAX, Boeing engineers identified that the 737 MAX display system software did not correctly meet the AOA Disagreement alert requirements. The software delivered to Boeing linked the AOA alert in disagreement with the AOA indicator, which is an optional feature in the MAX and the NG. As a result, the software activated the AOA alert in disagreement only if an airline opted for the AOA indicator.

When the discrepancy between the requirements and the software was identified, Boeing followed its standard process to determine the appropriate resolution of those problems. That review, which involved several experts in the matter of the company, determined that the absence of the AOA Disagreement alert did not have an adverse impact on the safety or operation of the aircraft. As a result, the review concluded, the existing functionality was acceptable until the alert and the indicator could be unlinked in the next software update of the planned screen system. The company’s leadership did not participate in the review and became aware of this problem for the first time after the Lion Air accident.

Approximately one week after the Lion Air accident, on November 6, 2018, Boeing issued an Operations Manual Bulletin (OMB), which was followed a day later by the issuance of an Airworthiness Directive (AD). When identifying the AOA disagreement alert as one of several indications that could result from a misleading AOA, both the OMB and the AD described that the AOA disagreement alert function is available only if the AOA indicator option is installed.

Boeing discussed the status of the AOA disagreement alert with the FAA following the Lion Air crash. At that time, Boeing informed the FAA that Boeing engineers had identified the software problem in 2017 and had determined, according to the standard Boeing process, that the problem did not have a negative impact on the safety or operation of the aircraft. In December 2018, Boeing convened a Safety Review Board (SRB) to consider again whether the absence of the AOA Disagreement alert from certain 737 MAX flight screens presented a safety problem. That SRB confirmed Boeing’s previous conclusion that he did not. Boeing shared this conclusion and SRB’s analysis of support with the FAA.

Boeing is issuing a screen system software update to implement the AOA Disagreement alert as a standard and independent feature before MAX returns to service. When MAX returns to service, all MAX production aircraft will have an activated and operable AOA alert and an optional attack angle indicator. All customers with previously delivered MAX aircraft will have the ability to activate the AOA alert in disagreement.

Increased expectations of the 737 MAX

Until the disclosure on Sunday, his investors estimated that Boeing would have to pay to solve technical problems with the 737 MAX, the plane in which 346 people died in accidents in October 2018 (Lion Air) and March 2019 (Ethiopian Airlines). Boeing would lose revenue while the plane is grounded, and compensate airlines for lost revenues until regulators let the 737 MAX fly again.

But on May 5, 2019, Boeing revealed in a statement that it knew, months before the Lion Air crash, that the alert in the cabin was not working the way the company had told the buyers. In addition, Boeing did not share its findings with the airlines or with the FAA until after the Lion Air crash.

Resultado de imagen para Boeing 737 MAX

Before the news, analysts estimated that the trials and delays in the 737 MAX deliveries could cost Boeing billions. Boeing could lose US$ 1 billion per month in revenues until the aircraft begins to re-ship, pay another US$ 1 billion per month to compensate airlines and leasing companies for lost revenues and disburse more than US$ 500 million to repair the software, according to Canaccord Genuity. Meanwhile, Cowen estimated that Boeing’s free cash flow would fall US$ 5 billion below its January 2019 guidance as a result of the 737 MAX debacle.

Lawyers could use Boeing’s Sunday announcement to increase that cost. In an interview on May 6, 2019, Richard Aboulafia, Vice President of Analysis of Teal Group, said: «This problem does not cost the company anything from a technical point of view to develop a solution, but I am sure that the lawyers they will use against them in which lawsuits always take place». According to Boeing’s statement describing its delay in sharing information about the disagreeing AOA software that does not work, Boeing argued that it was protected by its standard process.

In 2017, several months after the deliveries of 737 MAX began, Boeing engineers identified that the 737 MAX display system software did not meet the AOA alert requirements in disagreement. When the discrepancy between the requirements and the software was identified, Boeing followed its standard process to determine the appropriate resolution of such problems. That review, which involved several experts in the matter of the company, determined that the absence of the AOA alert in disagreement did not have an adverse impact on the safety or operation of the aircraft.

Boeing plans to make available to airlines a working version of the AOA Disagree alert as a standard and independent feature before MAX returns to service. The disagreeing AOA, which worked in previous versions of the 737, is intended to «alert pilots that signals from the two angles of attack of the aircraft sent contradictory data about the relationship of the airplane’s nose to the airstream that is approaching», according to Bloomberg.

The Boeing disclosure adds a new element to the potential cost to shareholders of the 737 MAX debacle. Charles Elson, Director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance at the University of Delaware, said in an interview on May 6, 2019 in Cambridge, England, «Boeing faces three costs: extracurricular damages and potentially punitive damages due to deaths of the two crashes, contractual damages due to the loss of business of the clients of their airlines, while the 737 MAX is connected to earth, and damages to the reputation».

Side effect

imagesThe damage to the reputation of the Boeing 737 MAX means that airlines could buy Airbus instead of Boeing, something that is already happening. For example, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, China is taking the lead in grounding the Boeing 737 MAX and buying 300 aircraft from the rival Airbus [a considerable lost opportunity since the 737 MAX sells for US$ 106 million each one.

It is speculated that Boeing made its disclosure on May 5, 2019 after an internal investigation of the matter and determined that the information would eventually come out and that it was important for the price of the shares. Some will raise questions about why Boeing did not reveal this before.

While investors may have previously assumed that Boeing would pay for non-contractual, contractual and reputational damages, Boeing’s disclosure of 5 May 2019 raises the issue of punitive damages, which in theory could go even higher than «acute damages, or three times the damages of the tort.

Boeing’s main defense is that the AOA data is not a «safety feature because a warning about erroneous readings is not a central part of a pilot’s classic flight display». The reading that is observed is an effort by Boeing to argue that he was doing what a reasonable person would have done. On the other hand, there is speculation as to whether Boeing misrepresented the situation to regulators in the aviation industry.

Senior FAA and airline officials are increasingly asking more questions about how transparent the Chicago aerospace giant has been with regard to problems with warnings in the cockpit. A \ W

562.jpgThe Boeing Hearing before the House of Representatives

The Boeing Company hearing will be the first time that members of the US House of Representatives will be able to ask questions about two fatal crashes involving the Boeing 737 MAX.

The Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure of the House of Representatives will hold a hearing on May 15, 2019 to examine the status of the Boeing 737 MAX, which has remained on the ground since March 2019 after two fatal accidents that killed more than 300 people.

Researchers who examined both air accidents have focused on an automated anti-block feature designed to push the nose of the aircraft down if the aircraft is at risk of stopping. Boeing added the Maneuver Characteristics Increase System (MCAS) to the 737 MAX aircraft to compensate for design changes. But many 737 MAX drivers said they were unaware of the system until the first crash.

Legal advice

Boeing appoints the best legal advisor to handle claims for accidents and related issues of the Boeing 737 MAX. Boeing appointed on Wednesday 1 May 2019 J. Michael Luttig as the newly created position of Counselor and Senior Advisor to address legal issues related to the two recent accidents of the 737 MAX. Luttig, 64, who has served as a general counsel since joining Boeing in 2006, «will handle all legal issues related to the accidents of Lion Air Flight JT-610 and Ethiopian Airlines Flight ET-302», announced the Chicago-based aircraft company in a statement.

Michael Luttig had served on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit for 15 years before joining Boeing. He also held high-level positions in the Supreme Court of the United States, the White House and in private practice. He will advise the President of Boeing and CEO Dennis Muilenburg and the Board of Directors of Boeing. Meanwhile, Brett Gerry succeeds Luttig as Boeing’s General Counsel.

A series of lawsuits have already been filed against Boeing in the Federal District Court of Chicago by relatives of victims who lost their lives in two fatal accidents. Reportedly, ongoing investigations into the two accidents point to faulty sensor readings and a flight control system that pushed the condemned aircraft down.

Corrections of the 737 MAX

Dennis Muilenburg told a shareholders meeting on Monday that Boeing is close to completing an update to the flight control software of the 737 MAX aircraft. If the nose is too high an angle, and the aircraft moves too slowly, the amount of air that runs above and below the wings may not be enough to generate the necessary lift to keep it flying.

The FAA pointed out the problem of the Boeing sensor 216 times, says the Preliminary Report. It is the report that could prove Boeing’s greatest oversight, the known problems surrounding the angle of attack sensor. The Attack Angle Device (AOA), which is believed to have played an important role in Lion Air and Ethiopian Airline accidents, was marked in more than 200 incident reports sent to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). However, according to the report, despite the recorded incidents, Boeing did not perform flight tests on a scenario, such as an accidental collision, in which the sensor did not work properly.

rotate13.png

The work of the sensors is to determine with precision how much the airplane points upwards or downwards. Since the horror of the Ethiopian Airlines accident in March, air safety experts have focused their attention on the small fin that extends from the nose of the plane.

Artificial intelligence comprising automatic pilots and modern airline security systems receives information from a multitude of sensors spaced around the aircraft. This tells you everything, from the air speed, the engine throttle setting, the temperature and the height of the air. If an aircraft detected an angle and a velocity at risk of producing a loss, this data should have triggered the artificial intelligence of the Boeing Maneuver Characteristics Enhancement System (MCAS).

The MCAS System on a Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft constantly receives data from the two synchronized sensors located on the nose of the aircraft. In case of launch, the MCAS automatically moves the nose of the aircraft downwards, without pilot input. Although pilots can cut the system manually, their sudden activation can confuse the pilots. In a 737-8 MAX, which was the aircraft involved in the incidents of Lion Air and Ethiopian Airlines, the fully automated AoA sensor system bypasses the pilot. Take the controls and force the nose of the plane to what it considers a safe angle. The researchers say that the flight characteristics of the Boeing 737-8 MAX of Ethiopian Air and Lion Air aircraft before crashing were consistent with the pilots fighting against the aircraft’s computers.

Airbus without advantage

Airbus has commented that there has been no change in demand for the A320NEO series as a result of the current grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX. «An A320 is an A320 and a MAX is a MAX», said Guillaume Faury, CEO of Airbus. The current situation «is not changing the image in the medium to long term, we have a very strong backlog for the A320neo and we are limited by the supply chain», Faury said. He noted that the overlap with the supply chain of the 737 MAX is limited, so the possible temporary relief on the other side does not directly help Airbus. Although Boeing has reduced its production of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft from 52 to 42 per month, for now suppliers continue to deliver parts and components at a higher rate.

Airbus reestablished its decision to achieve a single-aisle monthly production rate of 60 by mid-2019. The rate will increase further to 63 in 2021. Faury believes that subsequent demand in the next decade will justify a further increase in production. The company has been willing to accelerate production, but has been held back by its suppliers, in particular, the engine manufacturers. He has also been facing serious internal problems. These have focused on the fourth final assembly line in Hamburg, which is still much less productive than planned. Airbus is currently «working to improve the execution of its internal industrial systems and monitoring the performance of the engine», Faury said.

The fourth production line was installed in the old A380 installation in 2017. The physical design of the site has forced Airbus to make substantial changes in the process that have been more difficult to implement than expected. Airbus Cabin Flex is the new design of the A321 cabin that will become standard next year. A \ W

AW | 2019 05 01 12:55 | AIRLINES / INDUSTRY

Flynas updates order A320NEO

Flynas family order Airbus A320NEO

Saudi airline Flynas is considering updating an existing order of 80 Airbus A320NEO aircraft to also include the larger A321NEO model, CEO Bandar Abdulrahman Al-Mohanna said on Tuesday.

The airline, which is partly owned by the Kingdom of Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal, placed the order of US$ 8.6 billion for the A320NEO’s in 2017. «We started to evaluate and we are in talks with Airbus», the airline said. Larger aircraft would be used for flights to the Indian subcontinent and North Africa. The A321NEO’s order could be placed in an updated order or when a decision would be made. In addition, the airline is expected to conclude negotiations with Airbus or Boeing at the end of the year to buy at least 10 wide-body aircraft. The decision to choose Airbus A330NEO or Boeing 787-9 aircraft depends on the engine manufacturers. «If Rolls Royce does not solve the problem with its Trent 1000 engine, we will not sign with them», he said. Rolls Royce is the only supplier of the Airbus aircraft.

Flynas is currently in talks with international banks to raise between US$ 250 million and US$ 300 million to finance aircraft order payments. The airline is expected to receive five A320NEO aircraft this year.

Routes of Flynas

Flynas also plans to open a center in West Africa or the Balkans within five years to expand beyond its domestic market with oversupply. The airline has 20% of the national market and expects passengers to grow at least 6% in the next five years. «Given that we are a short distance operator, we seek to link these centers with the current centers in Saudi Arabia, the demand is high, but there is excess capacity, so ticket prices are lower than the cost», said Al. -Mohanna.

«Last year we began to explore markets that are not operated by other Saudi airlines, such as Georgia, Azerbaijan and Vienna», Al-Mohanna said. The carrier competes with three other carriers based in Saudi Arabia on internal routes, which weighs in the rates. A \ W

Boeing presenta corrección MCAS a FAA

Boeing is confident that the changes in that computer program will allow the closure of the 737 MAX. Boeing has submitted to the Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) some documents on a correction for the stabilization system, called MCAS, of its models 737 MAX, involved in two plane crashes in recent months, a source related to the subject said.

The certification of the software, a key step for the devices of this model to fly again, will not occur, according to a Boeing representative, before the meeting that the FAA will hold on May 23 with regulators from around the world in Washington. The FAA must also wait to receive the data of the test flight that it will carry out in the next few days, the source contacted by the AFP indicated anonymously.

Boeing calculates that the immobilization of the airplanes has cost him 1,000 million dollars after authorities around the world prohibited to operate the 737 MAX, after two accidents with airplanes of that model in six months caused more than 300 deaths. In both cases, the first conclusions point to a malfunction of the MCAS stabilizing system. Therefore, Boeing is confident that the changes in that computer program will allow lifting the ban on the 737 MAX.

The FAA reported last week that it had convened counterparts from several countries to a meeting on May 23 in Washington to address the changes the company plans to implement.

CEO of Boeing keeps his job

Boeing Co Chief Executive Dennis Muilenburg retained his job Monday at an annual shareholders meeting and vowed to regain public confidence after facing tough questions about two fatal crashes of the 737 MAX plane.

In the midst of the biggest crisis he has faced in his almost four years as CEO, Muilenburg survived a shareholder motion to separate the roles he holds as Executive Chairman and head of the Boeing Company’s board of directors. Subsequently, Muilenburg told reporters that he would continue to lead the company during the crisis, which has led to the suspension of plane flights, demands, investigations and concerns about the safety of the 737 MAX. «I’m very focused on security for the future. I am very convinced of that. My clear intention is to continue leading in the fronts of security, quality and integrity», he said after the meeting, when journalists asked him if he had considered resigning.

20160712-152037.jpgBoeing says the standard warning system was not operational on all 737 MAX aircraft. An alert system that was supposed to be a standard feature on Boeing’s 737 MAX plane «was not operational on all planes», the company said. Boeing said in a statement on Monday 29 April 2019 that the function was not working on some of its aircraft because it was linked by mistake to an optional feature, the Angle of Attack (AOA) indicator. «The Disagreeing Alert was intended to be a standard and independent function in the MAX aircraft, however, the Disagreeing Alert was not operable on all aircraft because the function was not activated as expected, unless an airline opted for the angle of attack indicator, the alert in disagreement was not operable». The AOA indicator allows pilots to know if one of the AOA sensors is not working. The «disagreement alert» shows if the sensors contradict each other. Boeing said the warning function was not necessary for the safe operation of the plane.

Boeing (BA) has been battling growing public concern and shareholder pressure for the safety of its best-selling plane after two of the planes crashed in six months. On October 29, 2019, a Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft from Lion Air crashed in Indonesia, killing the 189 people on board. Another 737 MAX of Ethiopian Airlines crashed in similar circumstances on March 10, 2019, leaving 157 dead.

Some of Boeing’s clients say that the company was not as transparent as it should have been with the alert system. Southwest Airlines, the largest US operator of 737 MAX, said in a statement on Monday that it had only learned that the system was optional after the Lion Air tragedy in October 2018. «Before the Lion Air event, the lights on AOA’s disagreement was represented as operable (not optional) by Boeing on all of MAX’s aircraft, «said Southwest spokeswoman Michelle Agnew.

Boeing defended his practices on Monday

«On each plane delivered to our customers, including the MAX, all flight data and information necessary to safely operate the aircraft is provided in the flight deck and on the flight deck screen», said Boeing. But the statement marks the first time the company admits an error in the launch of its 737 MAX.

At its shareholder meeting on Monday, Chief Executive Dennis Muilenburg said that the security systems in the 737 Max were properly designed. «We have not seen a slip or a technical error in terms of the fundamental design and certification of the approach», he said. He also suggested that in both fatal crashes, the pilots did not «fully» follow the procedures that Boeing had described to prevent malfunction. Boeing declined to comment more on the matter. The company has said it will continue working to make its aircraft safer. Last month he implemented a software revision for the 737 MAX that involved an update to MCAS, the anti-blocking system that was identified as a common link in both accidents.

The most significant change in the MCAS software in that update is the addition of data from a second AOA sensor, which measures the plane’s horizontal inclination. In its first iteration, the software only extracted data from an AOA sensor. Researchers in Indonesia have said that erroneous data from a single sensor caused the MCAS system to repeatedly push Lion Air’s JT-610 flight into the Java Sea, in a battle with pilots who tried to straighten the plane. Boeing says it will make sure that the «disagreement alert» system works on all 737 MAX. A \ W

AW-A350_logo.pngEuropean aeronautical constructor increases revenues but profits plummet

Airbus SE has reported the economic results of the 1Q2019 that has just made public that establish a 24% increase in revenues but an 86% drop in profits. The European aviation industry has seen its net profits plummet from € 283 million in the first quarter of 2018 to € 40 million in 1Q2019 despite the fact that its revenues have grown from € 10,119 million to € 12,549 million.

The President of Airbus, Guillaume Faury, has indicated that «the underlying financial results of the first quarter reflect mainly the increase in the production of our commercial aircraft and the staggering of deliveries. The commercial aircraft market remains strong and we continue to see good prospects in the helicopter and defense and space businesses. The new management team is already working to fulfill our commitments».

The fall in profits was mainly due to several extraordinary charges in the quarter: € 190 million as a result of the prolonged suspension of export licenses to Saudi Arabia by the German government. Some € 83 million related to the mismatch of payments in dollars prior to delivery and the revaluation of the balance. Some € 61 million related to the cost of the A380 program.

The increase in revenue was the result of the largest number of commercial aircraft deliveries in the quarter: 162 versus 121 a year earlier. 126 of the A320CEO family (30), A320VEO (96); A220 (8); A330 (5); A350 (22) and A380 (1). Airbus Helicopters delivered 46 helicopters, six fewer than in the first quarter of 2018. Airbus Defense delivered an A400M.

Commercial orders

Aircraft sales for 2019 totaled 62 commercial aircraft, with cancellations of 120 orders, mainly of the A380. This left Airbus Commercial with a net total of (-) 58 aircraft (45 net orders in the same period of 2018). Airbus Helicopters received net orders for 66 devices, far from the 104 obtained the previous year. The value of orders received by Airbus Defense and Space was € 1.1 billion, including a C295 for the Border Service of Kazastán. The work on the A400M is progressing at a good pace. The assembly line in Seville has secured work until 2030. The work in the A400M is progressing at a good pace. The assembly line in Seville has secured work until 2030.

Looking to the future, from Airbus recognize that they continue the problems in the production of the A321 with the new configuration of doors, the so-called Cabin Flex, Airbus works to improve the execution in their internal industrial systems and to control the performance of the engines. The engines of both the A320NEO and the A330NEO continue to generate headaches in Toulouse, home of the commercial aircraft division.

The A320 family program is on track to reach a production rate of 60 aircraft per month by mid-2019 and is preparing to achieve a rate of 63 in 2021. A \ W
