American Changes Hub SFO
American cancels venue for Flight Attendants
American Airlines has announced the cancellation of the base for Flight Attendants in San Francisco/SFO. The measure taken this week after more than half a century will stop allowing its attendants to be based in the city, a decision that affects some 403 employees according to the Union of Flight Attendants, the Association of Professional Flight Attendants (APFA).
«There are people who had been based there for twenty, thirty, even forty-five years who are not ready to retire. So imagine: you are going to have to uproot your life, your family’s life, discover a new city, or whatever otherwise try to go back and forth from San Francisco to your new city of assignment every week on your own», said Paul Hartshorn, Jr., National Communications President of the Association of Professional Flight Attendants, on Friday 09/16.
Dallas/Fort Worth (TX)-based American Airlines has had a reason for the change, it just doesn’t see San Francisco growing as a hub or a destination. Perhaps that’s not surprising given that San Francisco lost 6.7 percent of its population during the first year of the pandemic, compared to 3.8 percent for New York and 2.8 percent for Washington, DC. It is also the smallest Flight Attendant base for American Airlines. It is the kind of difficult decision that is made in airlines, that affects many across different stakeholders, that is likely to resonate with business leaders in many industries. The decisions you make as a business leader can uproot people’s lives, even when you deem them legitimately necessary for the health of your company. The industry is like a never-ending experiment in which the four big players are facing the same challenges simultaneously, all while a battalion of analysts, investors and journalists try to dissect their every move.
American Airlines has stated its position on the change in its letter: «Over the past few years, American’s network and schedule have evolved based on a number of factors, including our size, changing customer demand and changes in Our fleet.
As we look to the future of our network, we expect San Francisco to maintain the same level of flight as it does today, but there are no plans to grow San Francisco and no future flight prospects based on our current network strategy.
Because of that, we have made the difficult decision to close our San Francisco flight attendant base. Importantly, any SFO-based flight attendant who wants one will have a spot at another base.
This is not a decision we take lightly and we are committed to working with the SFO team to ensure a smooth transition to another base if they choose to continue flying».
The post-pandemic changes for commercial aviation are challenging in the midst of a market that needs to return to normality and grow with great difficulties, but the lives of workers threaten their job and emotional stability with decisions that are due to changes in airline strategies.

US rejects reduction of TRNG pilots
The United States refuses to reduce training hours Denies Republic Airways proposal
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United States has communicated on Monday 09/19 that it had denied a request from the regional airline Republic Airways to reduce the number of hours needed to train Co-pilots. The aviation agency has expressed that it does not agree with the airline’s argument to allow only 750 hours of flight experience instead of 1,500 hours. The Head of a Pilots Union hailed the decision as a major victory for flight safety, while the CEO of Republic Airways said he was disappointed by the decision, saying Republic’s proposal would have improved safety.
Indiana (IN)-based Republic Airways had sought a waiver that would allow graduates of its pilot training program to apply for a restricted air transport pilot certificate with the same reduced aviation experience as military or ex-military pilots. Republic flies nearly 1,000 daily flights to 100 cities in 40 US states and operates under the major airline partner brands of American Eagle, Delta Connection and United Express.
The FAA said the airline’s new training program does not provide an equivalent level of safety as the regulation that requires 1,500 hours of flight experience before a pilot can work for an airline. Several unions had opposed Republic’s request, with some arguing that a reduction in flight hours and relaxation of standards would «jeopardize safety and result in inexperienced pilots», the FAA said.
Some regional airlines say they are facing a pilot shortage and cannot find enough qualified pilots to meet demand. Republic Airways Chief Executive Officer Bryan Bedford said the airline was «disappointed, but not surprised, that our request to the FAA was not met with the review and engagement it deserves. It would enhance safety by providing students with a highly structured, mission-specific training approach and would open the door to a rich aviation career for any student who may not otherwise be able to afford to participate».
Airline Pilots Association (APA) President Joe DePete said the FAA’s decision «is a huge victory for aviation safety and for the flying public».
The Regional Airline Association has blamed the difficulty in recruiting pilots for service cuts to rural communities, several of which have lost commercial service entirely in recent years. In formal comments to the FAA, he argued that Republic’s approach would produce safer pilots than would require a given number of flight hours. The association said on Monday 09/19 that it was reviewing the FAA’s decision. «The mission of all airlines is to have robust safety programs and continually improve flight training. The first focus should be safety. Expanding structured training pathways would improve access for people who cannot access a pilot career today», said Faye Malarkey Black, Executive Director of the association.
Regulations to increase flight hours for co-pilots stemmed in part from the February 2009 crash of Colgan Air Flight 9L-3407 in upstate New York that killed fifty people. It was the last major fatal passenger airline accident in the United States.
In July 2022, a group of Republicans in Congress proposed legislation to raise the mandatory retirement age for Commercial Pilots to 67 instead of 65, in an attempt to address airline staffing issues. The proposal would require pilots over the age of 65 to pass a rigorous medical exam every six months.
«The FAA has previously concluded that the argument that a waiver would serve to address a pilot shortage is overly simplistic», the agency wrote. While the FAA’s ruling indicates the agency will not consider efforts to find ways around the 1,500-hour rule, debate over the requirement is likely to continue. The rule was imposed by the US Congress, which is set to reconsider a series of aviation laws next year 2023.

ANA customer launch Insight Accelerator
All Nippon Airways launches new Boeing Insight Accelerator
The Boeing Company announced on 09/20 that All Nippon Airways (ANA) will be the launch customer for Insight Accelerator (IA), a new cloud-based digital solution that uses artificial intelligence to improve operational efficiency and avoid service interruptions. high impact. While the latest generation of commercial aircraft like the 787 generates a wealth of flight data, many operators lack the infrastructure to manage and harness the information. AI uses out-of-the-box algorithms to classify and detect anomalies and create alerts to enable airlines to take proactive maintenance and repair action and avoid unscheduled delays.
«There are many products on the market for flight data analysis, but Insight Accelerator is the most effective tool for our aircraft operation. It is highly innovative and meets our primary goal of leveraging features in flight data that indicate a system failure before it happens», said Manubu Tono, Manager of Engineering Planning and Management at All Nippon Airways.
New Insight Accelerator (AI) technology uses artificial intelligence to identify and address problems before they occur. Out-of-the-box algorithms mean no coding or programming skills are needed. Reduce service interruptions, save costs and improve operational efficiency. Boeing developed the AI platform based on decades of experience supporting the global fleet and developing rigorous methods while assisting in ‘Plane on the Ground’ situations. «AI’s built-in artificial intelligence, guided exploration, and powerful visualizations allow airlines to investigate flight and maintenance data, identify trends, and discover insights, all without specialized coding or programming skills. This is an easy-to-use solution that will provide value to airlines from day one», said Duane Wehking, vice president of Digital Aviation Solutions, Boeing Global Services.
Headquartered in Tokyo, ANA Airways was the global launch operator for the 787 Dreamliner and is a launch customer for the 777X family. The airline became the first airline in Japan to order the 737 MAX with firm orders for 20 737-8s, and currently operates more than 170 Boeing aircraft. ANA operates the world’s largest 787 fleet with 77 Dreamliners, including all three submodels.
