El lugar a donde mueren los aviones

AW700077

AW | 2017 10 04 18:55 | AIRLINES

«BONEYARDS»

AW-70443777.png

Aeropuerto Davis-Monthan AFB
Tucson, Arizona (Estados Unidos)

Victorville, California (Estados Unidos).

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

The place where the planes die

An aircraft boneyard, or aircraft cemetery, is a storage area for retired aircraft

Most aircraft at airports in the United States and around the world are either stored for storage or obtained for reuse or resale and the rest of the body are then discarded.

Deserts, such as those in the Southwest of the United States, are good places for boneyards because dry conditions reduce corrosion and hard soil does not need to be paved.

Climatic conditions such as Arizona with dry climate, low humidity, and low rainfall mean that appliances take longer to rust here than elsewhere.

Airplanes are expensive to build and maintain, but even at the end of their active life they can be taken advantage of. But it’s not just about landing and parking: although the planes are inactive, some may be required to return to the air, which can be very costly.

«BONEYARDS»

El pase de diapositivas requiere JavaScript.

NUMEROUS AIRCRAFT NEARLY ENTER THE «BONEYARDS» FOR NUMEROUS REASONS BETWEEN THEM: BY BANKRUPTCY OF AEROLINE; FOR LACK OF PAYMENT TO THE LESSOR OF THE AIRCRAFT; FOR ACCIDENTS / INCIDENTS; FOR FAILURE TO REPLACE (CANIBALIZATION OF THE FLEET); FOR POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC EFFECTS, BETWEEN OTHERS. MANY AIRCRAFT WILL ACCEPT TO FLY IN ANOTHER AIRPORT OTHERS YOUR DESTINY WILL BE THE COMPLETE SCRAPPED.

Conservation Processes

Boneyards of passenger planes in the western United States fulfill several functions: temporary storage, maintenance, recovery of parts and scrapping.

Commercial airplanes have a limited life expectancy. Some are temporarily out of flight status, and must be stored in an environment that is conducive to preservation. Others are kept for spare parts for aircraft flying.

Aircraft have to be properly washed so that no salt remains that may contribute to oxidation, fuel tanks must be emptied and bathed with a kind of lubricating oil, and explosion devices, such as the loads that activate the seats projectable, have to be removed.

The devices are stored in different ways, some are kept almost active in case they need to be reused, while others are partially dismantled.

AIRBUS A320’S SCRAPPED FROM TAM LINHAS AÉREAS AND MEXICANA DE AVIACIÓN

Others are used as a source for spare parts, and they keep their components until they are needed elsewhere: at Davis-Monthan there are about 400,000 specific parts and machinery from different parts of an aircraft.

To protect passenger aircraft during storage from damage caused by wind and sun, motors and windows are well covered with white reflective materials. A sealed airliner can thus be stored safely, for years, until it is time to return it to active duty, or salvage.

Eventually, all passenger aircraft are permanently removed from service and must be «disposed of». In the last phase any type of duct or valve is covered with aluminum tape and the planes are painted with a paint easy to remove and a layer that helps that the apparatus does not warm excessively by the sun.

We detail the most important aircraft cemeteries in the United States and the world are:

AW-70443777.png

Davis-Monthan AFB Airport
Tucson, Arizona (United States). Home to the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group (AMARG). The 2,600-acre site contains about 4,400 aircraft. It is the largest facility of its kind, known colloquially as «The Boneyard». It is located in Davis-Monthan AFB, Tucson, Arizona (USA).

Under the scorching sun of southern Arizona, this bizarre aircraft cemetery is inside the Davis-Monthan Air Base in Tucson, Arizona. And its mission is to keep the remains of these metallic birds to, among other things, be able to use their parts as spare parts.

«After World War II, we had a lot of excess aircraft, specifically B47 and other planes like that. They needed a place to store them», said Tim Gray, director of AMARG. In 1964, AMARG was designated as the only storage place for aircraft in the country and is now the largest in the world.

AW708877

N928L McDONNELL DOUGLAS DC-9-34  DINAR LÍNEAS AÉREAS IN TUCSON, ARIZONA

«The aircraft is processed for storage and any classified asset is taken off the aircraft. All sensitive components or secret material are stored in a secure building, in a security vault», Gray said. But the place is not just an airplane cemetery, it also rebuilds aircraft from scratch.

«One of the unique things about AMARG is that we have all the parts and tools to mount any aircraft in the United States Air Force inventory, so if we have to do a B52 bomber for example. This is something that most other cemeteries can not do, they only preserve old aircraft», commented the director of AMARG.

Abilene Regional Airport
Abilene, Texas (USA). It contains many retired Saab 340 aircraft, primarily American Eagle Airlines.

Alice Springs airport
Alice Springs, Northern Territory (Australia). The first large-scale airplane boneyard outside the United States.

On May 27, 2011 it was announced that Alice Springs Airport had been selected to be the first large-scale aircraft boneyard outside the United States, with the first storage aircraft to arrive in early 2012.

The facility, which started operating in June 2014, is operated by Asia Pacific Aircraft Ltd. Storage APAS chose Alice Springs because of its dry, arid climate is perfect for storing and preserving aircraft. The facility will store commercial aircraft that are not in use, as well as aircraft that have been decommissioned and will be stripped of parts to be recycled, such as engines, electronics and cabling.

Kingman Airport
Kingman, Arizona (United States). It leases space to major airlines like Delta, American and United and operates as an «active storage facility» offering storage and repair services.

Programming for the first flight is planned on October 5, 2017 from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur, followed by Penang and Phuket. Silkair also plans to fly the MAX to a new destination on the Singapore Airlines network, Hiroshima, Japan, on October 30, 2017. «We are the regional wing of Singapore International Airlines (SIA) and that remains our main mission,» said Foo Chai Woo, CEO of Silkair.

Silkair plans to use the 737-8 MAX to serve some of its more distant destinations, such as Cairns, Kathmandu, Hyderabad and Bangalore. «We have some on the drawing board and we are going to keep an eye on consumer trends», added Silkair CEO.

Despite strong competition from low-cost regional airlines, Silkair continues to record double-digit passenger growth, about 25% in August 2017. Foo Chai Woo noted that a route to Vientiane and Luang Prabang in Laos, launched in 2016, has seen numerous incoming interline transfer passengers from the Star Alliance group and Singapore Airlines, especially from Australia and Europe.

«Competition in this region is intense, but demand growth is even more exciting. Singapore has taken advantage of this growth,» Foo said. «We continue to focus on Silkair’s value proposition and with the Max 8 with 14% more fuel efficiency, it puts us in a strong position.»

The configuration of the Boeing 737-8 MAX by Silkair will have 12 in business class and 144 in economy class. The airline expects to receive its second 737-8 MAX at the end of October 2017, the third in November 2017 and the remainder in 2021. It plans to drop the remaining fleet of 10 Airbus A320s and three A319s by the end of 2020.

Ryanair investigada por contrataciones

AW | 2017 10 04 11:10 | AIRLINES

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

Ryanair investigated by hiring

Resultado de imagen para enemy RyanairRyanair faces HMRC investigation into airline employment structures

The airline uses Irish joint-stock companies to employ some pilots in the United Kingdom, thereby reducing their sick pay obligations.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is a department of the UK Government responsible for tax collection, payment of some forms of state support and administration of other regulators including minimum regimes national.

Ryanair pilots are being investigated by HM Revenue & Customs on the complex structures of employment imposed on them by the unadorned airline. Several experienced pilots told the Guardian that they have faced tax investigations related to how they are employed by Ryanair.

Europe’s busiest airline is already grappling with a public relations disaster caused by mistakes in the way pilots are recruited to work, leading to the cancellation of tens of thousands of flights until March 2018, interrupted the travel plans of 700,000 passengers.
Ryanair has also collided with its pilots on their working conditions, with many complaining about the same contract arrangements. Ryanair pilots form unofficial union in battle with Michael O’Leary

The focus of the tax authority on individual pilots came two years after it began an investigation into the use of Ryanair agencies such as Brookfield Aviation to provide about half of its 4,200 pilots.

Those applying to join Ryanair are told to create an Irish joint-stock company and become directors of it, under the direction of accountants recommended by the airline. The company supplies pilots to one of several agencies, including Brookfield Aviation and McGinley Aviation, which in turn supply them to Ryanair.

The system limits Ryanair’s obligations to pilots, such as sick pay, among factors, which allow the Dublin-based company to keep its costs low. However, the use of Irish joint-stock companies to hire pilots based in the UK has led to pilots with limited experience of a company’s limited tax obligations falling ill on its fraud investigators.

A UK-based pilot said it has been under investigation since February 2015, and is being questioned by HMRC about an employment structure it had no choice but to use.

The Ryanair Institutional Crisis

The Ryanair crisis shows the true price of the low-cost revolution. Many pilots are faced with paying taxes on the profits that they themselves must pay in the United Kingdom and not in Ireland, the airline’s yield. One pilot showed a document in which the agency he worked for told him to sign a disclaimer to say he was not an employee of the company but his own limited Irish company, a total disruption of limitation of liability. He said that this structure ultimately led HMRC to investigate its tax affairs, causing undue anxiety. «It was one of my main reasons for leaving. I was fed up of being always worried if I was paying taxes properly,» he said. And he warned that pilots from other countries also face the investigations of their national authorities. «I flew with a guy who had to sell his house and the car because he had been landed with a tax bill of € 40,000,» he said. Another pilot said British pilots were now worried about their homes being raided, noting the measures taken by German tax authorities last year on the pilots employed by Brookfield Aviation. «Imagine doing this job when you are constantly worrying about whether what you are doing in tax matters is legal simply because you do not receive any other option from your own employer,» he said. All pilots interviewed also warned that using self-employment contracts, which do not entitle them to sick pay, meant that some were coming to work even if they were sick.

Both HMRC and the Irish airline Ryanair did not give concrete answers before enormous institutional failure, becoming the worst case scenario for a perfect storm. A \ W

Aerolíneas cubren vacío de Ryanair

AW | 2017 10 02 16:26 | AIR TRAFFIC / AIRLINES

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

Airlines cover empty Ryanair

Vueling, Aer Lingus, easyJet, Norwegian and Eurowings collect the passengers Ryanair left ashore

The main European competitors are absorbing the demand left by Ryanair when it has been forced to cancel thousands of flights due to bad planning of the pilot licenses, plus the trigger of the «flight» of pilots to another European airline called Norwegian Air Shuttle from Norway.

Ryanair was forced to reach agreements with several airlines to relocate passengers affected by the cancellations of 20,000 flights that the airline has made in the last two weeks.

Vueling, of Spain is one of the airlines that has taken advantage of the Irish airline for the endorsement of the air tickets. EasyJet, Jet2, Cityjet, Norwegian, Eurowings and Aer Lingus are the others that will transport Ryanair customers.

Ryanair allowed to give a flight alternative or a refund to 98% of those affected by the first batch of cancellations. This is a total of 315,000 passengers of those affected between September 2017 and April 2018.

As for flights canceled for the winter season from November 2017 to March 2018, Ryanair has reported that it has processed more than 75% of the claims or relocations of the 400,000 affected. This is 75% of the total, which expects to see increased to 90% in the remainder of this week.

The Irish airline, which since the beginning of the cancellations has argued that it would allow them to bypass the delays, has highlighted that only in the last week its punctuality index has improved to 97% and that only two of the 16,000 operated flights have been canceled this week. The cost of cancellations have not been reported. A \ W

Colapso de Monarch Airlines

AW | 2017 10 02 05:27 | AIRLINES

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

Monarch Airlines Collapse

Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) says it is taking steps to recover 110,000 people in the UK, with 300,000 future reservations canceled

The airline Monarch Airlines ceased operations, with 110,000 customers to be taken home on specially rented aircraft.

KPMG accountants announced early Monday that Monarch Airlines, the UK airline, had been placed in administration and that all new flights from the UK had been canceled and would not be rescheduled.

The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) said it had launched a program to take Monarch customers to its home in the next fortnight, leasing 30 aircraft for the rescue operation. All Monarch customers who are overseas and will return to the UK within the next two weeks will be transferred at no additional cost and do not need to cut their stay, according to the regulator. But he said the «very tough message» was that 300,000 future bookings had been canceled and anyone who had booked vacations leaving the UK would not be able to travel.

CAA Chief Executive Andrew Haines said: «We know that Monarch’s decision to stop operating will be very painful for all its customers and employees. This is the largest British airline that has stopped operating, so the government has requested the CAA to support Monarch’s overseas customers to return to the UK at the end of their holiday at no additional cost to them. » «We are gathering, in a very short time and for a period of two weeks, what is effectively one of the largest airlines in the UK to handle this task.» The scale and challenge of this operation means that some disruption is inevitable. we ask customers to stay with us while we work all day to bring everyone home. «

Customers affected by the collapse of the company have been urged to consult their website monarch.caa.co.uk for advice and information on flights back to the UK. It also provides information for passengers who have future reservations with Monarch but have not yet left the UK. The government has warned passengers that they expect disruptions and delays as it works to ensure that there are enough flights to return the «large number» of passengers.

The CAA was expected to announce Monday whether Monarch could continue to sell holiday packages. The low-cost airline and holiday company previously had a midnight deadline of September 30 before their air travel organizer license (Atol) expired. A \ W

Ryanair, presa de su propio éxito

AW | 2017 10 01 18:38 | AIRLINES

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

Ryanair, prey to its own success

Cancellations of the airline question a model of hiring pilots

Ryanair in 2015 had drawn up an expansion plan following the low cost model’s cost discipline that would lead the airline to aspire with the opening of transatlantic routes coast to coast between Europe and America.

The transatlantic lowcost model

When the Ryanair company wanted to launch the transatlantic model, it made «promotions» of the promotions that would reach the passengers in the transatlantic line, the possibility of traveling for around 15 euros. The reaction of the sector showed a mixture of astonishment and skepticism. Ryanair has not been able to truly demonstrate the formula for offering so cheap airfares for transoceanic flights.

The Irish-based airline has been forced to plan objectively the possibility of major investments in aircraft fleet renewal and a deep operational change. Norwegian Air Shuttle has become its major competitor which has increased its participation in Europe and America. This pulse explains, in part, erroneous planning by Ryanair.

Planning misses

Around 400,000 passengers could be left unmanned due to planning errors in pilot licenses, according to Ryanair. The Irish airline argues that a failure in the shifts of pilots, following the Irish legislation (which until next year differs from European), has deprived the company of sufficient reserve staff. From the sector, the emphasis is placed on the fact that many pilots have left the company due to their working conditions, a model of contracting in which all kinds of modalities to reduce costs, whether through brokerage or workers autonomous or according to sources of the union of pilots (Sepla), by means of the constitution of parallel corporations that later contract the company. The firm thus ensures a zero cost in terms of social security contributions and other benefits, such as unemployment, paid leave, and so on. According to the Association of Pilots of Airlines, Ryanair has lost 700 of these professionals in the last year.

To these cancellations announced last Wednesday, there are added the daily suspensions of 50 flights, more than 2,200 cancellations between the months of September and October. The mistakes in the planning of the vacations added the flight of approximately 140 pilots in the last months towards the Norwegian airline, they suppose a search for a professional improvement.

According to experts, the Ryanair model does not experience a crisis of exhaustion. Rather one could speak of a collapse product of success. In the heat of this way of understanding the business have arisen numerous competitors that, even, have been sent to new fields still unexplored by Ryanair.

Pressure for pilots

Carlos San José, a spokesman for the Commercial Aviation Pilots Association (Copac), believes that the Irish company’s crisis shows that its hiring system to save costs does not work and that the company is bordering on legal lines and revealing that the inspection capacity of the European Union has not been able to counteract the harmful consequences of this scheme of work, which can even affect ‘passenger safety’ as pilots are being subjected to too much pressure. «We do not believe that it is a crisis of the whole sector of the low cost, but it is a failure in a specific model», explain from the airlines, that deny that the irruption of the low cost of long radio collision with the business of low cost. They are different markets. Several low-cost firms have made the decision to power the long and short-haul companies. It has been a change in the rules of the game that, in some points, makes enough sense, riveted.

Already three years ago, Ryanair itself had to lower its demands on passengers as the costs associated with the ticket, eliminate uncomfortable services on board and show their friendlier face to avoid the downfall of the clientele. In 2012 it had to change its fuel policy (it was loading the load, although it complied with the legal minimum) after three «mayday» (distress signal) in Valencia. This new crisis will force him to rethink himself not to fall prey to his own success. A \ W

Qatar Airways vigésimo aniversario

AW | 2017 10 01 16:11 | AIRLINES

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

Qatar Airways 20th Anniversary

Qatar Airways celebrates its 20th anniversary

On Saturday, September 30, 2017, Qatar Airways celebrated 20 anniversaries of the Qatari national airline. The party took place with a spectacular aerial exhibition of the famous Red Arrows. And while the Hawk planes crossed the skyline of the city of Doha.

The small, but oil-rich country has had its own airline for well over 20 years, but for a long time, it was only a small regional player with little influence. In 1997, however, the carrier was relaunched as the airline we know today.

Much of the success of the airline has been credited to its direct and colorful executive director, Akbar Al Baker. The 55-year-old Qatar converted what was an airline with only four aircraft into one that now has a fleet of 200 strong. So fast has been the development of the airline that has become one of the fastest growing airlines in the history of aviation.

Qatar Airways now flies to more than 150 destinations worldwide and has opened a host of new routes in the last 6 months. Even with a major political crisis in the region affecting business, the airline continues to expand – last week, Baker announced an order for 6 Boeing aircraft valued at $ 2.16 billion USD. That is on top of more than 100 aircraft already on demand with Boeing and Airbus.

At this year’s Skytrax World Airline Awards, the airline was named as the World’s Best Airline, a compliment that can add to an ever-increasing trophy cabinet of similar awards. A \ W

Rescate de South African Airways

AW | 2017 09 30 15:43 | AIRLINES

AIRWAYS® AW-Icon TXT

South African Airways rescue

Resultado de imagen para South African Airways logoThe National Treasury of South Africa has transferred another 3 billion rupees from the National Revenue Fund to the airline to help pay part of a loan from Citibank

The Treasury says the rescue of South African Airways (SAA) is part of the plans to make the airline commercially viable. The rest of the money will be used to pay staff salaries and other operating expenses.

Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba is expected to announce how the government plans to fund the remainder of its airline’s $ 10 billion recapitalization when it submits its mid-term budget statement next month. Treasury spokesman Mayihlome Tshwete says money is not a loan that is repayable because the government expects the airline to become profitable in the future. «SAA must begin to function as a business entity and it is starting to make those difficult decisions right now.» At the same time, SAA will not have to pay any of the 10 trillion rupees it will receive in guarantees and cash from government coffers this year.

Dondo Mogajane, director general of the Treasury, said that money is not a loan, but a recapitalization. Money is only a temporary and quick solution to keep the planes in the sky and the Treasury maintains the long-term goal is to get the national airline to the point where it can stand on its own. The Treasury said it had to dive into the national treasury to help SAA meet its commitments because if the airline defaulted its loan payments to the seven banks from which it borrows, it would be much worse for taxpayers. Such a default could also hit other state entities that borrow from those banks, as they might decide to call their debts. A \ W
