AW-Boeing_737_MAX_1.jpgBoeing statement about JT610

AW-70866.jpgBoeing statement on the Final Report of Lion Air JT-610 investigation

The Boeing Company issued the following statement regarding the publication on Friday 25 October 2019 of the Final Investigation Report of Lion Air Flight JT-610 by the Indonesian National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT):

«On behalf of everyone at Boeing, I want to convey our deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives in these accidents. We cried with Lion Air and we would like to express our deepest condolences to the Lion Air family. These tragic events have deeply affected us all and we will always remember what happened», said the President. and Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg.

«We commend the National Transportation Safety Committee of Indonesia for its extensive efforts to determine the facts of this accident, the factors contributing to its cause and the recommendations directed towards our common goal that this never happens again».

«We are addressing the KNKT safety recommendations and taking steps to improve the safety of the 737 MAX to prevent the flight control conditions that occurred in this accident from happening again. Safety is a lasting value for everyone at Boeing and safety of flying in public, our customers and the crews aboard our planes is always our top priority. We value our long-standing partnership with Lion Air and look forward to continuing to work together in the future».

B737-8MAX.jpgBoeing experts, who work as technical advisors to the National Transportation Safety Board of the United States, have supported KNKT in the course of the investigation. The company’s engineers have been working with the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and other global regulators to make software updates and other changes, taking into account KNKT research information.

Since this accident, the 737 MAX and its software are experiencing an unprecedented level of supervision, testing, and global regulatory analysis. This includes hundreds of simulator sessions and test flights, regulatory analysis of thousands of documents, reviews by regulators and independent experts and extensive certification requirements.

In recent months, Boeing has been making changes to 737 MAX. Most significantly, Boeing has redesigned the way in which the angle of attack (AOA) sensors work with a feature of the flight control software known as the Maneuvering Feature Enhancement System (MCAS). In the future, MCAS will compare the information of both AOA sensors before activating it, adding a new protection layer.

In addition, MCAS will now only turn on if both AOA sensors agree, it will only be activated once in response to the wrong AOA and will always be subject to a maximum limit that can be overridden with the control column.

These software changes will prevent the flight control conditions that occurred in this accident from happening again.

In addition, Boeing is updating the crew manuals and pilot training, designed to ensure that each pilot has all the information they need to safely fly the 737 MAX.

Boeing continues to work with the FAA and other regulatory agencies around the world in the certification of the software update and training program so that the 737 MAX works safely again. AW-Icon AW002

Airbus launches A220 demonstration tour of the Pacific region

Airbus Group has launched an extensive tour of the Pacific Region to show the A220, its last member of the family. The plane used for the tour is an A220-300 leased from Latvia’s airBaltic, which will visit nine destinations in seven countries. These will include three stops in Asia on the trip back to Europe.

The first stop on the tour will be the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu, home of the region’s A220 launch customer, Air Vanuatu. The plane will visit Australia (Sydney and Brisbane), New Zealand (Auckland), New Caledonia (Noumea) and Papua New Guinea (Port Moresby). On the way back to Europe, the plane will stop in Cambodia (Phnom Penh) and India (Bangalore and New Delhi). During the demonstration tour, the A220-300 will be used for static displays at each stop, as well as demonstration flights for airline executives and other guests.

The A220 is the only new design aircraft in the market for 100-150 seats and incorporates cutting-edge technologies, the latest aerodynamic design, and new-generation engines. Together, these advances generate fuel savings of at least 20 percent compared to aircraft of previous generations of a similar size. In addition, the A220 offers an extended range capability of up to 3,400 nautical miles. This makes the aircraft especially suitable for the type of operations observed in the Pacific region, including short-to-medium transport operations between the various island nations, as well as longer routes to Australia and New Zealand.

The airBaltic A220-300 is equipped with a single-class passenger cabin with 145 seats. As with all A220 aircraft, the design comprises three seats on one side of the aisle and two on the other. The cabin is the largest in its size category, with wider economy class seats and spacious upper compartments.

The A220 is available in two versions, with the A220-100 with capacity for between 100 and 130 passengers and the largest A220-300 with capacity between 130 and 160 in typical airline designs. At the end of September 2019, customers around the world had placed orders for 525 A220 aircraft with 90 already in service with six operators. AW-Icon AW002

Spirit Airlines, the low-cost airline based in Miramar, Florida, is close to agreeing on a provisional agreement to order up to 100 single-aisle aircraft worth US$ 12 billion at Airbus Group SE catalog prices, according to sources at the European industry

Resultado de imagen para spirit airlines png

The agreement would be the first for the European aircraft manufacturer for the amount after the United States imposed 10% tariffs on commercial aircraft, which it offers to US carriers last week, part of a long-standing transatlantic trade dispute over subsidies. To the planes.

An agreement of that size would be worth up to US$ 12 billion at the most recent Airbus list prices, but industry sources say such agreements generally include discounts of at least 50%. In this way, the airline could perforate the tax barrier imposed by the United States Government on products imported from Europe. Even so, it was not immediately clear if a Spirit order would include any agreement to compensate for the cost of tariff rates.

Spirit Airlines was considering in August 2019 the single-aisle Airbus A321NEO or a Boeing alternative, the 737 MAX, to boost its growth. Spirit, founded in 1993, currently operates a fleet of 140 Airbus aircraft. The ultra-low-cost airline is based on disaggregation fees, which offers a basic service at an attractive cost and a large number of optional additional charges.

An agreement for Boeing to enter Spirit Airlines would be considered a breakthrough since low-cost airlines generally use only one model to save money on costs such as training. But if the agreement is confirmed, Airbus would win a historic battle with irreversible consequences for the future fleet of aircraft of the airline. Proof of this is that tariffs do not work as a protectionist barrier. Boeing has said that fares are necessary to level what it considers an unfair advantage for Airbus due to subsidies. Both aircraft manufacturers have partially lost subsidy decisions and the European Union is expected to respond at its own rates next year. Airplanes are usually requested several years in advance, which means that any aircraft ordered now would only be covered by tariffs in the event of an extended transatlantic tariff war. Airbus aircraft assembled at a plant in Mobile, Alabama are not currently reached by US import tariffs.

The Executive President of Spirit Airlines, Ted Christie, said at a conference on August 2019 that the airline saw benefits by continuing to operate a single fleet, but that it would closely study prices on any aircraft offer from different aeronautical industries. AW-Icon AW002

Boeing despide a Jefe Commercial

Kevin McAllister dismissed as Chief of Boeing Commercial Airplanes while the 737 MAX crisis continues

The Chief Executive of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, Kevin McAllister, is the first executive to be dismissed as a result of the current 737 MAX crisis. The Boeing board decided to fire him as Chief of Boeing Commercial Airplanes at a board meeting on Monday 21/10 in San Antonio. Kevin McAllister was immediately replaced by Stan Deal, who served as Executive Director of the Boeing Services Division and formerly a lifelong executive within the commercial aircraft division of the Seattle area. On Tuesday 10/22 at the headquarters of the division in Longacres, where the movement was a surprise, Deal was already installed.

Reasons for the change of address

A senior Boeing executive with knowledge of the deliberations, who requested anonymity due to the delicacy of the problems, said that the reason for McAllister’s dismissal was not only the 737 MAX but a combination of many negative developments under his supervision. These included the problems of the 777X engine that led to the first flight next year and the recent burst of a door that occurred during the ground tests of that plane. Another factor, said the senior executive, was the discovery of this month in the old 737 Next Generation of cracks in the structure of the alar root called «pickle holder» that connects the wings to the fuselage. The reduction of the 787 Dreamliner order book is also a concern. But the main problem has been the grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX and the constant rejection of its return to service, as Boeing has struggled to meet the demands of international regulators. As a result, Boeing shares have lost a fifth of their value since the second fall of 737 MAX in March 2019.

When McAllister arrived in Boeing exactly three years ago, his immediate priority was to work for the launch of the next completely new aircraft from the aircraft manufacturer that would become the Boeing 797. On the drawing board was a concept called New Midmarket Airplane (NMA), a plane with a size and range between the 737 single-aisle and the 787 Dreamliner double aisle. It was also of paramount importance to put the new 777X in the air, test it in flight and deliver it to customers. These projections did not meet the objectives, the 777X is delayed, the sales of the smaller model, the 777-8X have not materialized and the production of that model has been delayed. Meanwhile, it is possible that the Emirates Airline launch customer may cancel part of its large 777X order next month at the Dubai Air Show 2019.

AW-700866888MCALLISTER (LEFT) BEING REPLACED STANLEY DEAL (RIGHT)

The 737 MAX crisis has also pushed NMA’s decision into the future and Stan Deal may have to radically review that product strategy after the 737 MAX crisis ends.

McAllister, 56, originally a materials engineer, joined Boeing in 2016 after spending 28 years at GE. He was the first stranger appointed to lead the Boeing commercial aircraft division. Boeing executives who had worked with him at GE knew him as a mathematician who made decisions after carefully calculating the numbers.

Since the accident of the JT-610 flight of the Boeing 737-8 MAX of the Lion Air 737 MAX airline almost a year ago, the crisis that led to the grounding of the world fleet in March 2019, the Chief of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, Kevin McAllister, has not appeared publicly in the development of the 737 MAX line crisis. The CEO, Dennis Muilenburg, has taken the lead in all public statements about 737 MAX and McAllister has said remarkably little in public. One of his few comments came in an email to the Seattle Times newspaper before the Paris Air Show on June 2019, when he said he was going through «the most difficult time I have encountered in more than 30 years in this industry».

On Tuesday 22/20, Dennis Muilenburg said in a statement: «We are grateful to Kevin for his dedicated and tireless service to Boeing, his clients, and his communities during a difficult time, and for his commitment to support this transition». David Calhoun, who assumed the position of President of Boeing when the board has displaced Dennis Muilenburg from that role this month, said «the Boeing board fully supports these leadership movements. Boeing will emerge stronger than ever from its current challenges and the changes we are making throughout Boeing will benefit the flying public in the future», Calhoun said.

In a farewell message in the press release, Kevin McAllister said: «Boeing is a great company with a commitment to safety that I have seen firsthand».

Ted Colbert, who was the Boeing Information Director and led the company’s IT infrastructure, assumes Stan Deal as Head of Global Boeing Services. Vishwa Uddanwadiker was appointed to Colbert’s previous position as Acting Director of Information.

In Boeing’s annual executive financial compensation in March, McAllister, although he was the head of the division that earned two-thirds of the company’s total earnings, was not among the top five highest-paid executives, so his compensation was not included in the list. A presentation at the end of February 2019 showed that McAllister owned 125,595 shares of Boeing, worth more than US$ 42 million. However, 100,000 of those shares that were granted when he joined the company are not yet conferred. Boeing did not disclose the financial terms of its departure or if it would retain those shares.

The crisis of the Boeing 737 MAX could continue in its future effects. McAllister may not be the last Boeing boss to roll as a result of the change in the aerospace company. CEO Muilenburg is under intense scrutiny and the top executive said that his performance when testifying before Congress on October 30, 2019, will be crucial in determining his future. In that testimony, Dennis Muilenburg hopes to affirm the return of 737 MAX to service before the end of 2019.AW-Icon AW002

Boeing-Company-Logo.jpgFAA will need weeks to review the progress of the MCAS Flight Control System tests of the Boeing 737 MAX562

The Boeing Company is making progress to get its Boeing 737 MAX plane back into the air, but the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will need at least several more weeks for review, the Administrator of the Aircraft said Tuesday, October 22, 2019, the FAA, Steve Dickson.

Boeing and the FAA are struggling to contain a crisis in the wake of two fatal 737 MAX accidents that left 346 people facelifts, forcing the airlines to land more than 300 aircraft and left Boeing deliveries worth more than US$ 500 billion Boeing’s projections to return 737 MAX aircraft to the sky are expected to resume by the end of this year, although major US and Canadian airlines have canceled 737 MAX flights entering 1Q2020.

Advances tests 737 MAX

In September 2019, the FAA said it would need about 30 days from the time of the certification test flight before the plane could resume flights. The system description is a «500-page document that has the architecture of the flight control system and the changes that have been made», said Dickson.

Recently, the FAA Administrator said at the 2019 Annual Conference of the Air Traffic Control Association in Washington, DC. that the agency had received the final software load and the full description of the system of the aircraft reviews, which was launched in March 2019. The FAA is currently using the software in the engineering simulator. The next step is to complete the pilot workload management tests and have the US and international pilots perform scenarios to determine training requirements before a key certification test flight. «It’s going to be several more weeks before we go through all that part of the process. We have a lot of work to do», said Dickson.

Boeing reports

Boeing said that last week it successfully conducted a certification flight test. Boeing today issued a press release on the progress of the return to service of 737 MAX. The plane has been on the ground for more than half a year since March 2019. So far, more than 800 test flights of the 737 MAX have been flown. The changes include an MCAS software update with new safeguards for an anti-lock system.

Boeing Executive President Dennis Muilenburg will appear before Congress for two days of testimony next week. The CEO of Boeing is already scheduled to appear before the House of Representatives of the United States. The occasion will be the first time that Boeing executives address Congress.

The Boeing Board of Directors and senior staff of its commercial aircraft division were scheduled to meet in Texas on Sunday and Monday after the exchange was published in 2016 that suggested the company knew about problems with the flight control system years before. of getting involved in two fatal accidents.

Final Report JT-610

On Wednesday 10/23, the Indonesian KNKT plans to share almost a first anniversary of the accident of the Lion Air flight JT-610, with the families of the victims a Final Report on the flight that crashed into the Java Sea shortly after from the takeoff of Jakarta/Soekarno Hatta Airport on October 29, 2018, the 189 people on board died. The Boeing 737 MAX was grounded after a second accident, on March 10, which involved Ethiopian Airlines flight 302, which killed 157.

Boeing’s defense has been activated following internal messages in the manufacturing processes of the Boeing 737 MAX. After the announcements this Friday 18/10 of an instant message conversation between two Boeing pilots about the engineering problems they were supposedly experiencing with the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS), the aircraft manufacturer faced skepticism when, Two days later, he denied having suppressed what appeared to be initial evidence that his 737 MAX Flight Control System had run rampant during the simulator testing in 2016.

But Boeing’s defense stands firm against the statements of the pilots in question, two cited direct knowledge of insider information on the matter and the third an expert pilot outside the company that analyzed the details of the flight in the chat. The conclusion is that the erratic behavior described in the 2016 chat by 737 MAX Technical Pilot Chief Mark Forkner revealed a software error in the 737 MAX flight simulator he was using, a pilot training machine that he and his colleagues were adjusting to get for MAX’s entry into service. It was not evidence of the failures that later appeared in the new flight control system of the real aircraft, known as the Maneuvering Feature Enhancement System (MCAS), which caused the fatal plane crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia.

The question is important because the publication of the messages aroused rage among members of Congress and aviation regulators, which raised new doubts about Boeing’s integrity and transparency just as it prepares to seek approval to relocate Boeing 737 MAX in commercial service.

A former senior pilot at Boeing, who worked with Forkner in a similar role and who has direct knowledge of the type of simulator evaluations that Forkner was preparing at the time, said the flight parameters mentioned in the chat clearly indicate that the MCAS does not They throw interesting data, even though the simulator’s failures made it look like this. In addition, he added, it would have been impossible for Forkner to have flown in the simulator any pattern similar to the accident flights, in which MCAS was caused by a faulty attack angle signal. «I can tell 100% that he could not have been flying on the stage that occurred in the aircraft of the accident, because there was no physical way in that simulator to turn off an angle of attack sensor», said the main pilot, who spoke on condition of anonymity because you do not want to be involved in the ongoing criminal investigation of the Department of Justice about 737 MAX.

Bjorn Fehrm, an aerospace engineer and former combat pilot who is now a Leeham.net analyst and has publicly criticized the MCAS design, agreed that the altitude and airspeed that Forkner cited when the simulator’s flight controls became crazy people discard a real commitment of MCAS and indicate, instead, an error in the simulator. “I was in normal flight. What is wrong with the original MCAS design is not evident when flying normally. This is just a simulator implementation problem”, said Fehrm.

The problem that Forkner identified in the simulator was recorded simultaneously, apart from his chat messages, according to a third source familiar with the relevant documents, and Boeing then fixed the simulator software. «The problem was not experienced in subsequent sessions», said this source, who also requested anonymity.

Media Expansive Wave

Boeing faced an epic public relations disaster on Friday 18/10 when a Congressional Committee published the text of the chat, in which Forkner described his colleague Patrik Gustavsson a 737 MAX simulator session that day, in mid-November 2016 when MCAS began to shed the supposed problems.

Pilot Forkner wrote his opinion when piloting the flight simulator: «It is rampant in the simulator in me. I am leveling at about 4000 feet, 230 knots and the plane is being cut like a crazy (sic). [… ] Of course, I’m disgusting flying, but even this was atrocious», said the pilot.

Forkner also stated that because the MCAS had evolved from its initial design and now the «Shocker AlerT», as he put it, it is activated at low speed, as well as in the originally planned high-speed scenarios, «he basically lied to the regulators without knowing it».

Understandably, the disclosure caused the outrage of members of the United States Congress, Airline Pilot Unions and aviation experts who interpreted it as clear evidence that Boeing knew before the 737 MAX entered the passenger service that the MCAS could behave erratically and dangerously.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had not been informed of the document, which Boeing had delivered to the Department of Justice on February 2019, the month before the second 737 MAX accident. On Friday 18/10, FAA Administrator Steve Dickson sent an angry letter to Boeing CEO Dennis Muilenburg demanding an explanation.

Both Fehrm and the former senior Boeing pilot also reacted initially with dismay, until they read the transcript of the conversation. Then, their knowledge of the flight and how the simulators are developed led both to a different conclusion.

Messages between two Boeing pilots suggest the company misled the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) about a key safety system on the troubled 737 MAX. Technical pilots versus test pilots

Forkner was Chief Technical Pilot at 737 MAX, driving pilots in a group called Flight Technical and Safety within the Boeing customer services division. This is a separate group of test pilots flying developing aircraft, which are part of a different corporate division called Boeing Test and Evaluation.

A copy of the 2016 instant message exchange between Mark Forkner and Patrik Gustavsson, two of Boeing's chief technical pilots at the time

As the Forkner chat makes clear, the two do not necessarily communicate well. «The test pilots have kept us out of the circuit», Patrick Gustavsson complains at one point. The job of the technical pilots is to develop the simulators and pilot training manuals that the airlines will use when the plane is in service. Usually, they don’t fly, but they work on flight simulators. The full-flight simulators are complex machines, essentially an airplane cabin recreated inside a closed box that is in hydraulic jacks. The buttons and switches and the control column inside are like in the real plane, but they are all connected to computers that try to simulate what happens in a real plane. For this to work, engineers must enter a large amount of flight data, developed first from wind tunnel tests and computer simulations and then in the final stages of actual flight tests. Forkner’s exchange with Gustavsson indicates that new data related to the design change to MCAS had only been introduced into the simulator system. It is only towards the end of the flight tests that all this data can be finalized to make the simulator a true mirror of the behavior of the real aircraft. At the time of the conversation, Forkner was working to develop the first MAX simulator at the Boeing facility in Miami. It was manufactured by TRU, a Canadian-American simulator manufacturer, a subsidiary of Textron based in Goose Creek, in the State of South Carolina.

Just like pilots, who must pass a test to be qualified to fly a specific aircraft, simulators are also inspected and tested before they are qualified to be used by airlines. The FAA sends inspectors every year to retest all qualified simulators and make sure they are still functioning as they should.

According to the former Boeing senior pilot, the first 737 MAX simulator was not yet qualified and TRU staff worked non-stop along with Boeing software engineers to properly calibrate the machine and finalize the software. Still, “there were many reports of discrepancies. The sim was not working as specified», he said. In the chat, Forkner mentions the signing of some DR or discrepancy reports. Ferhm believes that what happened in the Forkner simulator on November 15, 2016, was just another discrepancy in the simulator. Something wrong with the coding. He points out that Forkner says he was flying at a low altitude of 4,000 feet and 230 knots. This is an appropriate speed for that altitude and he calculates that the angle of attack could not have been greater than 5 degrees.

The MCAS design would have required at least twice the angle to activate and to reach that angle, Forkner would have had to remove the controls creating a severe force of about 2 G, the kind of extreme maneuver that an airline pilot ever I would execute unless it was in a sudden emergency like ascending to avoid collision against a mountain.

The MCAS design would have required at least twice the angle to activate and to reach that angle, Forkner would have had to remove the controls creating a severe force of around a 2G force, the kind of extreme maneuver that a pilot of an airline would never run unless in a sudden emergency like getting up to avoid a mountain. Forkner’s statement that he basically lied to the FAA seems to stem from the disconcerting fact that the redesign of MCAS, made on March 2016, had just leaked.

However, Monday 21/10’s analysis of the problems of the Boeing simulator in 2016 suggests that the stories published over the weekend that report on the exchange of messages between the pilots were, in fact, misinterpretations, as Boeing claimed This Sunday 10/20.

On Tuesday, October 22, 2019, a fourth person, one who requested anonymity due to the delicate nature of the matter, provided information on how Patrick Gustavsson, the second pilot in the chat, understood the instant messenger conversation with Forkner. This person said Gustavsson also believes that the problem that Forkner experienced «was the result of a failure in the simulator software and not the MCAS.» This radical change in perception regarding the 2016 chat does not change the conclusion that the MCAS as originally designed led to air accidents. However, it means that these messages are not evidencing that Boeing cheated the world in 2016 and hid early evidence that the MCAS was a deadly trap. AW-Icon AW002
