Impact of regional airlines in the US
US cities could be isolated by the risk of bankruptcy of small airlines
Two regional airlines flying airline flights for United, Delta Air Lines, and American Airlines will suspend operations in the coming weeks, marking the first US airlines to be punished for the coronavirus outbreak.
The group representing these airlines, the Regional Airline Association (RAA), says the closings are just the beginning. The airline’s rescue bill, as currently written, will not help small companies, he said, and the crisis could end the sector. That would leave hundreds of smaller cities served only by regional planes with very limited air service, or perhaps none at all. «We may be about to fundamentally change the air transportation system in the United States. History says that once a city loses service, it doesn’t come back. These are the first stops, but if we don’t get help and we get it quickly it definitely won’t be the last», said Faye Malarkey Black, Executive Director of the Regional Airline Association.
The two regional airlines fly small planes to small and medium cities. Bakersfield, California, Abilene, Texas, State College, Pennsylvania, and Kalamazoo and Battle Creek, Michigan are among the cities that get all their services from regional airlines. Many other cities, from Tallahassee, Florida to Eugene, Oregon, get almost all of their service from regional operators. According to Black, those cities are at great risk of losing their service in the crisis. «That’s the historical pattern. When there is a recession, the smallest communities are the ones that lose service first», Black said.
The companies that close are Compass Airlines, which will stop its Delta Connection operations on April 1 and its American Eagle flights on April 7, 2020. Trans States Airlines, which has common ownership with Compass, will close its United Express operations on 1 April 2020.
Before the current crisis, the two airlines had 2,700 employees and transported almost 10 million passengers a year on more than 500 daily flights to some 100 cities. But those two airlines are a small but crucial segment of the American airline industry. In total, regional airlines carried 159 million passengers last year on more than 10,000 daily flights or about 40% of the total number of American flights. Together they employed 59,000 workers last year. Not only the smallest cities are served by regional carriers. Some routes may go to cities where a larger airline wants to provide service, but there is not enough demand for a full-size jet. Many regional carriers fly between major cities, such as New York to Columbus, Ohio, or Atlanta to Denver. Passenger traffic has plummeted in the face of the virus, as public health officials advise Americans to stay home when possible, avoid groups of more than 10 people, and eliminate non-essential travel.
There is no prospect of relief from the federal government. The proposed bailout does not include the tens of billions in cash subsidies requested by the airline industry and includes only loan guarantees that must be secured by assets such as aircraft. Most regional airlines do not own the planes they fly for major carriers and cannot borrow money even with federal guarantees, Black said. «This form of [bailout] is of no use to us. We need our partners to be healthy, but we need legislators to understand that we are a different business and that any support must work for regional airlines», said Black, CEO of the association.
Airline consultant Mike Boyd said many of the smaller airports likely to lose service were already at risk, in part because potential passengers were often willing to drive up to 90 minutes to a larger airport with more options. ![]()

World tourism calls for protection
The travel and tourism industry has been a major contributor to many global economies, however, managing the influx of tourists for the benefit of travelers and residents can be difficult. The global concern for many countries, in a pre-Coronavirus environment, is that an excessive number of tourists may not be sustainable. It only takes one blockbuster movie to come out, and then all of a sudden, a destination is overwhelmed by the number of visitors wanting to fulfill their Hollywood dreams. Our interconnectedness and our ability to learn about different countries through viral videos or various forms of media has, in the past, created an influx of tourism. Rising real estate prices, damage to natural landscapes, crowds of people, all of these were points of contention for many locals.
