They stimulate low cost airport in Mendoza
Mendoza wants to have an alternative low cost airport
The Province of Mendoza wants an airport like El Palomar for low cost. The Government of Mendoza seeks that the airlines of the sector operate in a different site in the El Plumerillo International Airport of the Province of Mendoza in Argentina. It is being studied at the current Aerodrome of San Martín, in the eastern province.
Mendoza increasingly opens the doors to low cost airlines, which grow in the region. For this reason, the Government of Mendoza began to plan seriously how to empower the sector by designing an exclusive airport for the companies to operate, in the style of El Palomar, in Buenos Aires.
The first concrete step was the political understanding between the Provincial Executive and the Municipality of San Martín, in the eastern province, to develop the plan in the current private airfield located in the commune. San Martin Aerodrome has a runway of 1.5 kilometers long and 30 meters wide that was already conditioned when the airports of the region were closed, in order to use it for sanitary flights and anti-hail fighting. What is needed now is a greater investment to readapt it to the greater traffic that will involve more landings and low cost parties. Thus, although the Mendoza-El Plumerillo Airport, the main provincial airport, was remodeled and is not saturated with traffic, the deployment of the cost would demand more space.
San Martin Aerodrome was refurbished in 2016 due to the closure of El Plumerillo, which was remodeled. The air market is growing in the region and Mendoza has become the hub of western Argentina. The constant offers and the great demand that this commercial air market is having excite the Tourism authorities. The intentions of the future of air connectivity in western Argentina are taken into account the needs of companies, which aim to have reduced costs in airport charges. Mendoza already has three airports. In addition to El Plumerillo, San Rafael and Malargüe are operational.
Mendoza has become the important hub of western Argentina, so it is analyzing alternatives and infrastructures for a feasible study of the Aeródromo de San Martín as a low cost airport. In this way they want to enhance unique tourist attractions such as the Aconcagua, the wine route, among other attractions.
The strategic location of Mendoza, by the proximity also with the Republic of Chile, and the exit to the Pacific is a key condiment to empower the sector, which would also generate new jobs. In fact, the firm Norwegian has already advanced its intentions to open an operating base in Mendoza, so it needs more physical space. So far in the Cuyan airspace, Sky Airline, Flybondi Líneas Aéreas and JetSmart Airlines also operate. It is expected that American Jet and Alas del Sur may also fly later, which have already requested regular routes.
Official data provided by the National Civil Aviation Administration (ANAC) show the growth of the domestic air market, which in the last four years cabotage passengers grew by 80%. In as much, the low cost already surpassed 20% of the domestic business. A \ W
