Surinam Airways incorporates A340
Surinam Airways receives Airbus A340-300 for transatlantic routes
The Surinam Airways (SLM) company has announced the incorporation of an Airbus 340-300 aircraft on Tuesday 14/03 to the Johan Adolf Pengel/Japa Surinam airport, with which the airline will maintain the route between Surinam and Amsterdam. The arrival of the new aircraft will allow a new impulse to the airline to restore with transatlantic services the route between Paramaribo and Amsterdam. In addition, the incorporation of an additional Boeing 737 has affected the regional market.
The new incorporation was received festively in Paramaribo on Monday 03/13. The reception of the aircraft marks a new chapter for the Surinamese airline, which has had a very difficult time and in recent years had to lease aircraft for regular service to Amsterdam/Schiphol due to the lack of its own plane.
The four story aircraft has been stored in Amman, Jordan. The A340-300 shows the SLM Airlines color scheme. The free shows that this 14-year-old Airbus flew for Air Belgium as OO-ABD in the past. You can transport 257 passengers on the plane. He has received the Surinamese registry PZ-TCW.
The SLM expects to be able to use this plane on the Paramaribo-Zanderij/PBM-Amsterdam-Schiphol/AMS route from May 2023. The Airbus replaces former KLM Airlines Airlines currently leased to Airhub and still carries the color scheme of KLM (9H-PAX, previously PH-AOM).
For Surinam Airways, the A340 is certainly not an unknown type of aircraft, because in recent years, several units have been taken under lease included Air Belgium, and until 2019 SLM flew the A340-300. That plane was replaced by a Boeing 777, but was not successful. The A340 propelled by four engines is not limited for ETOPS certifications, allowing them to use for transatlantic routes.
The company is carefully building its own fleet under the Drive-Lease modality. A second Boeing 737-800 will also be put into service in May 2023.
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority Suriname (CASAS) will now work on the completion of the documentation and local certification, after which the aircraft can receive the enabling registration of the aviation authorities. In recent years, Surinam Airways has trusted third transatlantic flight services to make flights to the Netherlands, with the consequent operational costs and the effectiveness of the regularity of the route. The surinamese airline belongs 100% of its property of the Government of Surinam.

Southwest detalla plan evitar otra crisis invernal
Southwest contingency plan
Southwest details plan to avoid another winter crisis
The Southwest Airlines contingency plan that is developing three parts focuses on improving winter operations, accelerating operational investments and collaborations between equipment. Three months after a travel crisis affects Southwest Airlines, based in Dallas, the airline is launching what is waiting for its redemption to be: a three part plan to boost operations. At the J.P. Morgan, Bob Jordan, CEO of Southwest Airlines, announced the corrections, which he hopes to complete in October. Southwest Airlines announced the plan after an initial study with the Aviation consultant Oliver Wyman after the December crisis in which he canceled 16,700 flights for ten days during the key holiday trip period.
«We understand the fundamental causes that led to the interruption of the parties, and we are validating our internal review with the evaluation of third parties of action to prepare for next winter, with some elements already completed. I want to thank our employees and customers for their patience and grace, and we are determined to emerge as an even stronger airline», said CEO Bob Jordan in a statement.
The plan is largely attached to the narrative to which the company’s officials have attached in the last three months: that it was not prepared for a winter storm that hit two key airports and that their technological systems were not prepared for the A large number of pilots and flight attendees who finally fell into a waterfall through their national network. The interruptions in December 2023 paralyzed the trips for more than a week before and after Christmas, with about two million passengers losing seats on the flights. He reported an impact of US$ 800 million of the events, went through the reimbursement to the clients and faced an investigation of the Department of Transportation (DOT) for a possible flight over programming.
The airline cited that the winter storm was more severe than expected, as one of the reasons why Southwest experienced interruptions. However, it was determined that one of the drivers of the interruption was the volume of cancellations of waterfall flights and nearby that the operations and the airline crew network entered into crisis. The three part plan focuses on improving winter operations, accelerating operational investments and collaborations between teams, the company said.
Winter operations Winter operations proved to be a problem when Elliot’s winter storm had a greater seriousness than Southwest had planned. At Denver International Airport and Midway International Airport in Chicago, 25% of crew members were affected by flight cancellations.
To solve these problems, Southwest plans to buy more thaw trucks, ensure more thawing pads and thaw liquid capacity in important airports and buy more motor covers and heating for cold climates. Bob Jordan told the conference attendees on Tuesday that the carrier is in the process of buying five thaw trucks for Denver and five for Chicago Midway. It will also take a look at the levels of winter personnel, pointing out how land operations employees were limited in extreme temperatures. The company also said that it will add a new meteorological application to provide the crew members of weather indicators in real time to help defrost the retention times, or those required before a plane must be defrosted again before the exit.
Southwest is looking to prioritize tools and technology that allow greater recovery during extreme events. It is budgeting more than US$ 1.3 billion in updates and maintenance of information technology systems this year 2023.
Andrew Watterson, Operations Director of Southwest Airlines, answered questions from legislators in February 2023 at a Senate audience in Washington. It was where he announced that an update of the company’s crew programming would be implemented that same week. In a statement he had expressed that he trusted Southwest and believes that the best days of the airline are yet to come.
Operative investments The operator is looking to update its Skysolver optimization software, improve its electronic crew notification system and update your telephone system and update your customer service and services telephone system. You are also planning an update of your employee mobility tools. These updates will focus on surge protection and efficiency during the high volume times of calls.
The operator continues with the plans to align network planning and network operations control equipment under a senior leader to execute operational plans. You will also seek to update your main indicators panel, improve decisions alert and support tools and analyze update capabilities to better integrate the optimization of aircraft and crew recovery.
Southwest continues an existing five year operational modernization plan, which began in 2022. The plan focuses on operational investments and organizational alignment to support customers and employees.
«I am very encouraged by the ongoing work to address the challenges we face in December. Our operational performance this year has been among the best in the industry, and we are committed to completing our elements of action at the same time that we execute a safe operation and Reliable backed by our legendary customer service that has made us famous throughout our 52 years of history», said Andrew Watterson in a statement.
Bob Jordan told attendees that the operational performance has remained strong. In the first two months of 2023, Southwest held the number 2 behind his competitor Delta Air Lines for his punctuality. He also said that the commitment has remained strong. Almost 50% of the passengers who were affected by the December 2022 crisis have reserved or flying in Southwest.
In March 2023 Southwest Airlines announced that it would use Amazon.com servers to help process searches, crew and other software tasks. The airline is also underway for its busiest year in Dallas Love Field, bringing back a handful of non scales flights that were not at the time a year ago to cities such as Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Louisville (Kentucky), Palm Springs (California ) and Minneapolis.
Collaboration between teams Southwest Airlines believes that the existing technology and personnel had to handle irregular operations, according to the statement, but the rhythm and amplitude of the interruptions tense to the airline. Bob Jordan reaffirmed that the operator supports his business model and his point to point, saying that his interruption review has not revealed the need for any structural change there. «Many of those stories that you read early, there was an issue that everything is technology. These are different things. Not everyone was completely based on facts. Good headlines, but not based on facts. So I admit that it is frustrating, But that always happened», said Bob Jordan on Tuesday 03/14.
Southwest Airlines plans to publish more details in the coming weeks with more detailed findings of the study on the structuring of the airline against the challenges that seeks to overcome them to overcome future operational crises.

Government sells Air Botswana
Government budget for sale of Air Botswana
The Botswana Government is budgeting the sale of the National Air Botswana airline, as announced by the country’s parliament by the Ministry of Transportation by Eric Molale. Through the National Transition Development Plan (TNDP) for financial years 2023/24 and 2024/25, it is budgeting, which will finally result in the sale of the airline in trouble.
The Government had ordered that a strategic partner for Air Botswana be sought, while seeking the provaive of the Botsuaese airline. The plan contemplates the restructuring to the operating excellence, recovery, growth and financial sustainability. «While the immediate plan is that the airline obtains a strategic partner, these strategic objectives are still aligned with their privatization agenda», said Eric Molale.
The airline is technically insolvent and the government has been studying measures to be more efficient and competitive, including the introduction of new regional routes, the maintenance of international security standards and the improvement of its punctuality (OTP). He has been looking to diversify his income through a strategic approach to increasing his load income, increasing his network of national routes and operating more charter flights. «In the medium and long term, the airline is working on the restructuring of its operations to market other divisions and, when possible, turn them into subsidiaries or autonomous entities», said Eric Molale.
The Evaluation and Privatization Agency of Public Companies (PEEPA) of Botswana, a statutory body responsible for selling state owned companies, has been dedicated to the search for possible buyers/partners. He presented recommendations on the review of the Air Botswana operating model for consideration by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications in August 2020. In May 2022, the president of Botsuana, Mokgweetsi Masisi, again confirmed the government’s plans to enter a Strategic association with the private sector to revitalize Air Botswana. The Government previously promised that a legal framework for privatization would have been in force for April 2022. The previous attempts of Comair (South Africa), Airlink (South Africa) and Air Mauritius, provisionally liquidated to buy a participation in Air Botswana did not give results.

Aerolíneas & State
From company they ensure rationality next to the State
Aerolíneas Argentinas has expressed that the airline continues to continue advancing towards sustained growth. «Contrary to what some political sectors express, the state company of Aerolíneas Argentinas is in its best moment of growth and expansion, from which it aspires to specify a new historical record», they express from the Argentine airline.
The National Airlines Argentina company is in a growth process from which it is planned to obtain a historical passenger record, which exceeds thirteen million annually, as indicated from the direction. The Director of Communications and Corporate Affairs of Aerolíneas Argentinas, Carlos Figueroa, stressed that the entire aerocomercial system of the country is recovered from what the pandemic crisis was. «We can already talk about growth and not recovery», he said in Dialogue with Radio La Plata FM 90.9. He also highlighted economic growth, the incorporation of two new cities in the destinations, and a very important connectivity that reaches forty eight national destinations that do not pass through the city of Buenos Aires.
Carlos Figueroa has expressed a recovery constant regarding the deficit and reported that in 2022 the airline has used 67% of the assigned budget. «In order to generate profits, a constant work is required, where we generate the greatest possible profitability without increasing costs and above all, businesses or extra income that does not have to do with the transfer of passengers», exemplifying the transfer of charges and maintenance From airplanes to third parties. Within that framework, he reaffirmed that private competition has absolute freedom to travel the routes to the destinations they want, and pointed out: “They have approved a lot of routes that do not fly by commercial decision, but the routes used by Aerolineas Argentinas are not exclusive at all”.
In addition in a joint work with two private companies, the numbers of the airline are in a significant increase, the conclusion of separating it from the State being ridiculous. «No one who looks rationally and professionally the situation could raise such a thing», Carlos Figueroa closed.

Mexico against foreign airlines
Mexican airlines close rows against foreigners’
Aeromexico, Volaris Airlines and the National Airborne Chamber (CANAERO) of Mexico issued different positions on the changes to the law that would allow foreign airlines to operate national routes. The national air sector closed ranks on Monday 03/13 to pronounce against the changes to the Civil Aviation Law that would allow air cabotage in the country, with which foreign companies could operate national flights, something that they can only do only Mexican airlines.
One of the arguments of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to boost his initiative sent in December 2022, where the regulations establish that an airport operator can have its own cabotage airline, as well as any airline from another country could disembark in Mexico and operate domestic routes; However, the industry warns that the initiative could be counterproductive in terms of consumer costs.
“If foreign companies are allowed to operate domestic flights, they would need to attend the most profitable routes, perhaps lowering their prices and then, once the national airlines once pretended, they would have control of the routes and set high prices to recover the losses they He has generated his income”, said the National Airborne Chamber in a statement. Even the union agency assured that the proposal implies a risk of financial weakening that could lead to bankruptcy to national airlines.
Aeromexico issued a statement where it fully coincides with what is expressed by the CANAERO, which has also asked to put the eye on the Airport Use Rates (TUA), which «are still increasing with the authorization of the Government». According to industry experts, the airport use rate represents between 39% and up to 65% of the total cost of the plane ticket on a domestic flight, depending on the route. «The law initiative that is analyzed in the Chamber of Deputies must exclude the cabotage term, and would have to focus on the necessary changes so that the Mexican aeronautical authority recovers the category 1 of aviation security», said Aeromexico in a statement referring to the degradation of Mexican air authorities to category 2, which prevents them from opening new routes and increasing capacities to the United States, after almost two years of not achieving the objectives.
Volaris Airlines demanded equal opportunities in order to be able to carry out a cabotage in the countries of origin of the airlines that want to operate in Mexico with this model. “Volaris reiterates its refusal to unilaterally assigned participation in the Mexican market to foreign airlines. Today the Mexican air market has a wide and sufficient offer, flights at competitive and accessible prices, so there is no need to open Mexican skies to foreign operators”, he said in his statement.
The changes to the Civil Aviation and Airports Law will be discussed in the Chamber of Deputies during the following weeks. Legislators of the Infrastructure Commission have referred that the opinion would be postponed to have a more punctual understanding of the consequences of the changes to be made, so it would seek to issue an opinion at the latest for April 30, 2023.
