American Airlines extends the suspension of the Boeing 737 MAX fleet

Resultado de imagen para American Airlines Boeing 737 MAX pngAmerican Airlines announced this Sunday, March 24, 2019 that it has decided to extend cancellations of flights planned on Boeing 737-8 MAX planes until April 24, 2019, extending the programming of its flights with this type of aircraft.

American Airlines has reported that the measure occurs while waiting for information from the authorities and Boeing to resume the use of these aircraft. The Boeing 737 MAX remain vetoed from the skies of the world in response to the doubts arising after two accidents. American Airlines is the second airline with the highest number of 737 MAX aircraft, operating so far 24 aircraft of that model, followed by Southwest Airlines, which has 34 units. In a statement the airline explained that it took the decision to suspend these flights in order to offer a better service to customers and to make it easier for them to change their reservations to other alternatives. Boeing already announced that it plans to do a software update to respond to the problems discovered in those investigations, as well as new training for the pilots. In addition, the airline plans to start by default including a security system that sold as an addition and alerts of possible failures in the mechanism in question.

Although the causes of air accidents are not yet known, research suggests that they could be due to failures in software designed to improve safety during the ascent phase of the devices and / or sensors that activate this mechanism. The US government, meanwhile, has ordered an audit of the entire Boeing 737 MAX certification process. A \ W

boeing-737-max.jpgFAA provisionally approves 737 MAX software

Boeing Logomark WaterThe FAA provisionally approves software update for Boeing 737 MAXFK,4923,36,737-max-round-pin

The Federal Aviation Administration of the United States (FAA) provisionally approved a software update for the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in order to correct errors in the MCAS flight control system.

After the plane crash of Ethiopian Airlines flight ET-302 that involved a second Boeing 737-8 MAX that killed 157 people on March 10, 2019, and that researchers say has clear similarities with the crash of JT-610 flight Lion Air on October 29, 2018, the company announced that it would leave all its 737-8/9 MAX’s on the ground. Boeing said the suspension was applied to its global fleet of 737 MAX for a total of 371 aircraft. The US Department of Transportation (DOT) has ordered an audit of the FAA certification of the Boeing 737 MAX model, which has recently become embroiled in a scandal following two seemingly similar plane crashes in five months.

The aircraft manufacturer is working on a system update after two recent accidents within five months with a Boeing 737-8 MAX, which killed a total of 346 people. Sources in Boeing report that the software update for the Boeing 737 MAX is ready. According to the sources, the delegations of three of the main US airlines with some of the Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in their fleet were invited on Saturday to the factory where the planes are produced. The pilots of the companies would try the new software there in simulators. The FAA still has to approve the software changes and related instructions.

Software for MCAS

An expected software update for the Boeing Maneuvering Feature Enhancement System (MCAS) on the 737 MAX aircraft will make the anti-lock system less aggressive and more controllable by pilots. Modifications create a smoother lock prevention function, redesigned so that it does not outperform other cab commands, or a misfire occurs based on faulty readings from a single sensor. It is designed to automatically push the nose down only once, for no more than 10 seconds, if the aircraft is in danger of stalling and loss of lift.

Also part of the upcoming anticipated changes is better training for the crew that operates the aircraft, which according to the Journal will include interactive computer courses, as well as more information on how the MCAS function works and how to deactivate it. Changes may arrive in the coming weeks. An FAA spokesman told him in a statement that he «expects the software solution early next week; and we will evaluate it at the time». The new program understands that pilots will receive detailed information about the automated MCAS flight control system, which was lacking in previous manuals, according to the sources.

Boeing directives

The CEO, President of Boeing, Dennis Muilenburg, said in a statement at the time that, while maintaining «full confidence in the safety of the model, the suspension was issued by a large amount of caution. Security is a fundamental value in Boeing during the time that we have been building aircraft, and always will be.There is no higher priority for our company and our industry. We are doing everything we can to understand the cause of accidents in partnership with researchers, implement safety improvements and help to ensure that this does not happen again». A \ W

US investigates 737 MAX certification

The investigation into how two planes of the same model (737 Max, of Boeing) could, in five months, be injured causing a total of 346 fatalities is still open. Responsible for the FAA, the Federal Aviation Administration, they try to find out if the company provided incomplete or misleading information about that model to air safety regulators and their clients in the United States. The criminal investigation, which includes the FBI, was opened after the first incident in October in Indonesia, where 189 people were killed traveling with Lion Air. The interrogations focus on the MCAS anti-lock system of these ships and on how the security certification process went. Faced with budget cuts and the lack of qualified personnel to analyze the new technologies incorporated into the aircraft, the FAA subcontracted a large part of the certification process with employees of the US manufacturer itself. The FAA assures that this process was carried out according to the standards. A \ W

AW | 2019 03 22 16:45 | AIR INVESTIGATION / AVIATION SAFETY

Boeing 737 MAX, a examen

AW-Icon-TXT-01

Investigations Boeing 737 MAX

Boeing-Logo.svgThe Boeing Company receives a strong global impact due to the accidents of the Boeing 737 MAX

After the air accidents that involved Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft, the strong impact that The Boeing Company is receiving is felt in all corners of the planet. The American aircraft manufacturing and other resources company is running an outreach campaign to regain lost confidence and retain customers from the global market to continue relying on Seattle’s flagship aviation star, the Boeing 737 line.

Institutional and governmental organizations have banned the Boeing 737 MAX from flying again for an indefinite period, but the US automaker has not stopped serial production of the 737 MAX and has no interest in doing so. In fact, according to industry experts, if you stop the assembly lines, it would take between three and six months to find the current production rate, which Boeing is not willing to lose to its main competitor, Airbus SE.

The production line of the assembly of the Boeing 737 line is at a rate of fifty-two 737 MAX per month. Initially, the aircraft manufacturer can store a hundred aircraft on runways next to its factories in Renton, a suburb of Seattle. On the other hand, if the immobilization of the 737 MAX is prolonged during the time, it should evaluate the relocation of the new aircraft in other places of the property. In 2018, Boeing had a similar drawback when the production line of the 737 MAX was subjected to pressure when failures in the design of the LEAP 1-B turbines generated delays in deliveries to Seattle, with the corresponding accumulation of 737 MAX units at Renton Airport.

The NTSB investigates

The National Transportation Safety Board of the United States (NTSB) is an independent federal agency of the United States responsible for investigating transport accidents and issuing recommendations to improve safety. The NTSB is sending three investigators to France on Thursday to help with the download and analysis of the Boeing 737-8 MAX flight recorders that crashed on Sunday 10 March 2019 near Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The NTSB researchers have experience in recorders, flight crew operations and human factors. The Bureau d’Enquêtes et d’Analyzes (BEA) French will download the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder in support of the Ethiopian investigation.

The investigation is being conducted by the Office of Aircraft Accident Investigations of Ethiopia in accordance with the standards defined in Annex 13 of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The NTSB appointed an accredited representative for research under ICAO standards because the aircraft was manufactured in the United States. All research data related to the investigation will be published by the Ethiopian authorities.

The NTSB researchers sent to France will work in coordination with field researchers in Addis Ababa. The investigators were sent immediately after the accident and have been an integral part of the ongoing efforts in Ethiopia. They are being assisted by technical advisers from the Federal Aviation Administration, Boeing and GE/Safran, the engine manufacturer.

FAA

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said Wednesday that its review of a possible software solution for aircraft on the ground is a priority of the agency. The FAA ground all Boeing 737 aircraft of the MAX 8 and MAX series 9 days after the planes linked to a second fatal accident on Sunday 10 March 2019.

BEA

French researchers from the Bureau d’Enquêtes et d’Analyzes (BEA) who have extracted data from the Black Boxes of the Ethiopian Airlines plane said they detected clear similarities between it and Lion Air’s JT-610 flight. The NTSB confirmed on Thursday that it will join international inspectors to analyze the cockpit voice recorder and the flight data recorder on the Ethiopia Airlines flight. The United States agency will join a team of experts from the Ministry of Transportation of Ethiopia, the Air Accident Investigation Agency of France (BEA) and the Aviation Safety Agency of the European Union (EASA).

The BEA of France said in a statement Thursday that it would send three experts to Ethiopia to work in coordination with all parties interested in the investigation of the accident.

Boeing, security in interdict

It has been investigated that Boeing had charged the airlines for additional safety features on the 737 MAX aircraft. The outer sensors (Pitot tubes) that tell the pilots the angle of the plane (AOA) were a safety feature that cost more. The sensors could have been able to prevent the Lion Air crash that killed 189, experts say. An Attack Angle Indicator (AOA), or two outside sensors that tell pilots the angle of their aircraft, was one of the two safety features that came at an additional cost to the airlines. The other, a disagreement alert called Disagree Light, would warn people in the cockpit if the sensors provided conflicting information.

The Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in its standard configuration had only one sensor. Tom Anthony, a former inspector with the Federal Aviation Administration, said the sensors could have saved the 189 people who died on the Lion Air flight that crashed in Indonesia in October. The researchers believe that the Lion Air flight had a single faulty sensor that was providing erroneous data to the plane’s computer and putting it in a dive. «If the pilots had had the AOA disagreement sensor and the training on how to respond to a light on that sensor, they could have manipulated their output from this situation», said Tom Anthony. Boeing’s practice of selling these security features at an additional cost was reported for the first time by The New York Times.

The aircraft manufacturer said that the safety features will become standard in aircraft and will be included in a software update that is expected to correct problems with the 737 MAX.

Boeing 737 MAX, under review

After the two accidents that involved the Boeing 737-8 MAX, the researchers’ suspicions focused on the stabilization system of the MCAS (Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System). On Thursday, Boeing announced that all 737 MAX will be equipped with a light alert signal that will warn of any problem of system operation. That luminous signal, known as «Disagree Light» (Light of Disagreement) and that until now was optional, will become a mandatory part of the instruments of the device, and is one of the modifications that Boeing will present to the American authorities in the next days.

Costs for 737 MAX on land

The corrections could cost Boeing more than US $ 500 million. Norwegian Air has demanded that Boeing compensate for the grounding of its 18 Boeing 737-8 MAX, and the longer the ground connections continue, the higher the costs. The total fleet of Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft in the world is about 350 units. Temporary replacements of temporary aircraft changes could cost airlines US$ 250,000 per aircraft per month.

Ethiopian ET-302

On March 21, 2019, the airline Ethiopian Airlines noted that all pilots underwent the recommended Boeing and the approved Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the difference training of the Boeing 737 Next Generation to the Boeing 737 MAX before the introduction to its fleet of the new line 737 MAX. The pilots were also informed about the EAD by the FAA about the Lion Air accident. The airline further noted: «The B-737 MAX full flight simulator is not designed to simulate MCAS problems, the FAA had previously noted, in February 2018, the differences between the NG and MAX systems in its Board Report. Flight Standarization (FSB)». This report indicates as the only and only difference with respect to the adjustment system: «Stabilizer coating: Stab Trim cuts the nomenclature of the switch panel».

Lion Air JT-610

On March 21, 2019, the KNKT of Indonesia reported that another fully qualified Boeing 737-8 MAX pilot performed the Denpasar-Jakarta route with the flight number JT-043. The flight immediately prior to the accident flight had encountered similar problems, however it managed to land the plane at the destination. The pilot was interviewed by the KNKT. The KNKT estimates the publication of the final report for August / September 2019. However, the KNKT can not comment on possible similarities between JT-610 and ET-302, and has offered cooperation to the Ethiopian authorities.

Airlines cancel at 737 MAX

Resultado de imagen para Boeing 737 MAX Garuda pngGaruda Indonesia Airlines has canceled an order of 49 Boeing 737 MAX due to distrust. The Indonesian airline announced this Friday 21 March 2019 the cancellation of an order for 49 Boeing 737-8 MAX after the two accidents in which aircraft of this model were involved in five months. «We sent a letter to Boeing requesting the cancellation of the order, the reason being that the Garuda passengers lost their confidence and no longer want to fly [in the models] MAX», explained Ikhsan Rosan, a spokesman for the Indonesian national company, who said that the airline was waiting for Boeing’s response.

Garuda has already received one of the 737-8 MAX aircraft, which is part of an order for 50 aircraft with a list value of US$ 4,900 million, according to the catalog price when the contract was announced, in 2014. A delegation Boeing will travel to Indonesia next week to discuss this decision, the spokesman said. The company is also negotiating with Boeing whether or not to return the plane it has already received. The airline has already paid Boeing some US$ 26 million. Garuda’s Executive President, I Gusti Ngurah Ashkara Danadiputra, said he would consider whether they would change to another version of the 737. «In principle we do not want to replace Boeing, but maybe we will replace those planes with another model», said the Director of Garuda Indonesia.

Endau Analytics, a consultancy in Malaysia, points out that Garuda’s announcement is the first cancellation of orders for Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft. «And probably not the last one, there is a risk that Garuda competitor Lion Air, which also has major orders for 737-8 MAX, will make the same decision. The Lion Air president publicly indicated that he was studying an annulment but it is difficult to say If other airlines will do the same, he estimated, there are many unanswered questions and each airline has specific needs», said Shukor Yusof representative of the consultancy.

The low-cost airline Lion Air, which has the largest fleet in Southeast Asia, is an important Boeing customer. The airline announced in March 2019 that it postponed the delivery of four 737-8 MAX without announcing an immediate cancellation. A \ W

Doubts about pilot training in the Boeing 737-8 MAX simulator

The second air disaster on March 10, 2019, has caused one of the most important investigations in the history of aviation, centered on whether the pilots were sufficiently versed in a new automated system.

29-year-old captain Yared Getachew of the convicted Ethiopian Airlines ET-302 flight was unable to practice a new simulator for the Boeing 737-8 MAX before he died in an accident along with 157 others, a fellow pilot said. He had to receive an update training at the end of March 2019, two months after Ethiopian Airlines had received the simulator.

In the two plane crashes the pilots lost control shortly after takeoff and fought a losing battle to stop their collapsing planes. In the Ethiopian accident, it was not clear if Yared’s colleague, first officer Ahmednur Mohammed, 25, who also died in the accident, had practiced in the new 737 MAX simulator.

Worldwide, most commercial airline pilots update simulator training every six months. It was not clear if Yared or Ahmednur would have trained in the new simulator or in an older one.

The MAX, which entered service two years ago, has a new automated system called MCAS (Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System). It is intended to avoid a loss of lift that can cause an aerodynamic blockage that sends the aircraft down uncontrollably. «Boeing did not send MCAS manuals, we actually know more about the MCAS system than Boeing», said the Ethiopian Airlines pilot, keeping his anonymity.

Under unprecedented scrutiny and with its 737 MAX fleet grounded worldwide, the world’s largest aircraft manufacturer has said that airlines received guidance on how to respond to MCAS software activation. It is also promising a quick update to the system.

ET-302 Ethiopian Airlines

On March 21, 2019, the airline highlighted that all pilots were submitted to the recommendations of the Boeing constructor and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that approved the training of differences from the Boeing 737 NG to the Boeing 737 MAX before the fourth generation of the Boeing 737 joined the Ethiopian Airlines fleet and before the pilots began to fly the new aircraft. The pilots were also informed about the EAD by the FAA about the Lion Air accident. The airline further highlighted: «The B-737 MAX flight simulator is not designed to simulate MCAS problems», the FAA had previously noted, in February 2018, the differences between the NG and MAX systems in its Board Report. Flight Standardization (FSB) This report indicates the only difference with respect to the adjustment system: «Stabilizer coating: Stab Trim cuts the nomenclature of the switch panel».

JT-610 Lion Air

On 21 March 2019, the KNKT of Indonesia reported that another fully qualified Boeing 737-8 MAX pilot was traveling home on flight JT-43 from Denpasar to Jakarta, the flight immediately prior to the accident flight, which had encountered similar problems as the flight of the accident. The crew of which, however, managed to land the plane at the destination. The pilot was interviewed by the KNKT. No more comments can be made. The KNKT also asserts that the media reports on what the CVR revealed do not coincide with the actual recordings of the CVR and, at best, resemble the personal opinions of the people used as sources for these reports. media. The KNKT estimates the publication of the final report for August or September 2019. However, the KNKT can not comment on possible similarities between JT-610 and ET-302, and has offered cooperation to the Ethiopian authorities. A \ W

CVR JT-610 Lion Air

AW-77000021.jpgThey publish details of the Cockpit Voice Recorder  (CVR) flight JT-610

The pilots of Flight JT-610 of Lion Air that crashed in Indonesia in October, the first of the two tragedies that occurred in Boeing 737 MAX registry PK-LQP aircraft and that motivated the temporary suspension of the model, looked desperately in the manuals of the aircraft to avoid the tendency to plummeting presumably caused by a faulty automatic navigation system. But they did not find it and collided in the waters of the Java Sea, Indonesia.

Degrabations Flight JT-610

The details of the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) of the last minutes have been published in the cabin of the Boeing 737-8 MAX of flight JT-610 that crashed in the Sea of Java, Indonesia. The recordings of the black box of Lion Air flight JT-610, the captain and his first officer never knew that the airplane was falling because of the MCAS system and tried in vain to find a solution in the manuals that he had on board. The accident in which 189 people died is still being investigated, although its preliminary findings have become more important after another Boeing 737-8 MAX dropped to ground for apparently similar reasons on 10 March 2019 in Ethiopia and killing 157 crew members and passengers. After the tragedy in Africa, the second for the modern model 737 MAX in five months, virtually all countries in the world have ordered the suspension of operations with the model until the company Boeing, the Federal Aviation Agency of the United States ( FAA) and the pertinent regulatory bodies investigate thoroughly what happened.

From the beginning it was learned that the accident in Indonesia was probably due to a fault in the sensors that register the Angle of Attack (AOA), that is to say the elevation or decline of the nose of the airplane, and of speed and altitude, and a correction erroneous and fatal made by the MCAS system, which automatically generates changes in the course of the aircraft to avoid falling into loss, as it is known at the time when a plane loses lift. In this way, the MCAS of the 737 MAX from Lion Air would have automatically started a dive, based on erroneous information, that the pilots could not correct and that caused the accident.

The pilots did not seem to know that the system was acting, they only talked about speed and altitude. Boeing did not correctly report or provide information on how to override this automatic system, whose existence the pilots apparently did not know about. On the contrary, the company maintains that the crew was not properly trained to deal with the damage through a specific procedure. Something similar seems to have happened on the Ethiopian Airlines flight, although information about it has not yet been released.

CVR JT-610

The Black Box recordings of Lion Air flight JT-610 have been made public for the first time through three sources that participated in the investigation. According to this information, the 31-year-old captain was flying the 737 MAX and the first officer was operating the radio on the take-off of flight JT-610 from Jakarta Airport. Just two minutes after leaving ground the first officer reported to the air traffic controllers a «flight control problem» while the captain tried to maintain an altitude of 5,000 feet (about 1,500 meters). Although the first officer did not specify the problem, in the recording of the black box a reference to the speed indicator and a presumed problem in the captain’s instruments is heard, according to the sources.

Then the commander asked his first officer to look in the quick reference manual, which contains a list of common problems. In the next nine minutes the on-board instrumentation indicated to the pilots that the plane was stalling and the MCAS automatically corrected the course by adjusting the elevators and tilting the nose of the plane.

A stall means that the air flow in the wings is too weak to maintain lift and prevent the ship from falling like a stone, and it usually happens when the plane’s speed approaches very low levels. When airplanes raise their altitude, they usually lose speed, and when they fall, they increase it. That is why the MCAS makes small corrections in the elevation of the nose to control this phenomenon. But the measurement was wrong and the plane was not stalling, the sources said. As a result, the captain spent those nine minutes trying to lift the nose of the 737 MAX and prevent it from crashing, while the MCAS did the exact opposite, triggered by an erroneous measurement. They did not seem to know that the system was acting. They only talked about speed and altitude.

Boeing, who has not wanted to comment on these revelations because the investigation is still ongoing, has said that there is a procedure to solve this problem, although it has already been the target of criticism for allegedly not having correctly reported in this regard.

A report published in November 2018 argued that a different crew had suffered the same problem on the same plane the previous night of flight JT-610 and had been able to avoid an accident by following the procedure. More precisely, that flight had the presence in the cockpit of an experienced pilot of the airline Batik Air, belonging to the same group as Lion Air. The man was accompanying the crew fortuitously and did not command the aircraft, but in the event of a malfunction and being present in the cabin he lent his help. The presence of this pilot had already been reported, but the report of the Indonesian aeronautical authorities now confirms it. But the fact is that none of these pilots or the airline passed the information on the incident to the next crew.

The captain and pilot of flight JT-610 remained calm during most of the flight. But over the end the commander gave control of the plane to his co-pilot to try to find the solution to the problem in the manuals himself. He asked the air traffic controllers to release the airspace below 3,000 feet (about 1,000 meters). Then the first officer lost control of the plane. According to the flight information, when the 41-year-old co-pilot took the controls, the 737 MAX deepened the fall. At the end, the captain, of Indian origin, remained silent, while the first officer, Indonesian, said «Allahu Akbar» (God is the greatest, in Arabic and a classic expression of Islam). Then the plane disappeared from the radar.

The final report from the Indonesian authorities is not yet ready, but in a preliminary way the MCAS system has been blamed, a defective and recently changed sensor on the plane, and the maintenance and training of the airline. A \ W

FK,4923,36,737-max-round-pin

AW-788-K66500-05.jpgDOT orders audit certification 737-8 MAX

B737-8MAXThe Department of Transportation of the United States (DOT) orders audit of the process of certification of the Boeing 737-8 MAX

The Department of Transportation of the United States (DOT), has ordered the Inspector General of the Department to audit the certification of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the Boeing 737-8 MAX after two fatal accidents related to the airplane since October. The Department of Justice opened a criminal investigation into the development of this model airplane, whose use has been suspended worldwide.

The US Department of Transportation ordered an audit of the certification process of the Boeing 737-8 MAX on Tuesday, March 19, 2019, an aircraft that has carried out two fatal accidents in recent months. The audit «will help inform decision making by the Department of Transportation (DOT) and public understanding, and will help the FAA ensure that its safety procedures are implemented effectively. Safety is the department’s number one priority , and we are all saddened by the tragedies of the two recent accidents of the Boeing 737-8 MAX in Indonesia and Ethiopia», the request states.

Investigations accidents 737 MAX

Researchers are focusing on the flight stabilization system MCAS (Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System), involved in the JT-610 accident in Indonesia, as well as the ET-302 flight in Ethiopia involving the Boeing 737-8 MAX model. Questions have been raised about the certification of the aircraft, of which only a part was examined, since the 737 MAX was not a completely new aircraft but an improved variant of the Next Generation 737.

The MCAS was developed for the MAX to compensate for its heavier engines. The Federal Aviation Agency (FAA) is particularly under pressure for having asked Boeing’s own employees to inspect and approve this aircraft. «Boeing requested a modification of this type of certification in January 2012 and the federal aviation agency granted it in March 2017», the Department of Transportation said on Tuesday. The audit has been entrusted to an independent institution, which will transmit its findings to government authorities. A \ W

Boeing 737, line-out

DOT investiga a FAA

Airbus can not build fast enough to replace market

AW-70099433Airbus SE could win market share in the narrowbodies aircraft segment. The Airbus A320NEO is the bestseller of the European manufacturer is the replacement for the Boeing 737 MAX that remains on the ground due to problems of insecurity. Although the consortium has a market in its favor to turn orders from the airlines, it faces a long delay like Boeing in the assembly line.

Boeing 737, line-out

The customers of the Boeing 737 MAX, will face the delay of the deliveries to the global operators, the installation of an improved software, the instructions and training, the economic losses due to the paralysis of the aircraft, among other details are among the negative aspects of the Global grounding of the Boeing 737 MAX fleet. Boeing has maintained that it will continue with the production line despite the fact that the model has been suspended to fly by the world aeronautical regulations bodies. Although there is no quick exit for the crisis of confidence that threatens the American builder industry, the Seattle giant will have to develop a strategy to maintain the customer base already relegated from the competition of the Airbus A320NEO.

AW-70990-Fortune.jpgAirlines & 737 MAX

Most of the airlines that have ordered 737 MAX have so far said they will keep them awaiting the results of the investigation. Canada’s low-cost airline, WestJet Airlines, became the second airline on Monday to warn that its financial performance will be affected by the global grounding of the 737 MAX fleet. The warning comes after Canada’s largest airline, Air Canada, issued a similar warning last Friday. The airline typically operates 24 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft from its fleet of 392 units.

One of the biggest challenges for airlines is that the A320NEO replacement aircraft simply is not available due initially to delays in engine deliveries and that the assembly line structure would not support a substantial increase in increased demand. Airbus is already working at full speed to produce enough aircraft to meet its existing order book and at the same time win new customers. At the end of February 2019, the company had an order book of 5,962 for its single-aisle aircraft. Of these, 5,814 were orders for the A320NEO and only 148 for the A320CEO. «In theory, they can change orders from Boeing to Airbus, but they will be waiting at the end of the Airbus queue.» There was a wait time of about three years for the new NEO, although favored customers could get a better position on the line», said Robert Stallard of Vertical Partners Research.

Airbus had already announced plans to increase the production of narrowbodies aircraft with a frequency of 60/month from 3Q2019, projecting 63/month by 2021 and analysts believe that it is unlikely to change due to the existing tensions in the supply chain. supply. Negotiating aircraft orders costs time and money and it was not an overnight decision, experts from the industry emphasized. Airbus would manage its orders and the demands of balances of those airlines that wanted previous deliveries with those that did not need them until later, but would have difficulties accepting new applications.

«For those airlines that already operated 737 MAX, one of the few options available is to lease an earlier version of the 737. They could, possibly get Boeing to get more 737 Next Generation at a discount price, of course, but that would cause even more disruptions in Boeing’s supply chain», said Mr. Stallard.

Norwegian Air Shuttle owns 18 Boeing 737-8 MAX in its total fleet of around 160, and another 92 in order, said last week that it would not «take the cost related to the new airplane we have to temporarily park. who produce this plane», said Executive Director Bjorn Kjos in a tight financial situation.

Aviation analysts said they expected customers to keep their 737 MAX orders unless a critical fault was found. Boeing has an order book of 4,659 aircraft of the latest narrowbodies version. «Customers may be tempted to cancel orders at the MAX, but they are likely to forego the cash advances they already made to Boeing», Chris Higgins, a Morningstar aerospace analyst, said in a note to clients last week.

Boeing has been working hard in the last year to get more 737 MAX in the competition with the A320NEO. The US group said last week it was still planning to maintain a production of 737 MAX at its current frequency of 52 per month despite suspending deliveries. However, a prolonged ground connection could eventually cause a backup of the aircraft in your facility.

The overall impact on the aviation industry so far is contained by the relatively small size of the fleet of 737 MAX. The American operators of the aircraft, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines and United Airlines, operate together only 72 aircraft of its combined fleet of approximately 2,400.

DOT investigates FAA

In an unusual move, the Department of Transportation is investigating the FAA’s approval of the 737 MAX aircraft. The focus is on an FAA office in the Seattle area that certifies the safety of the new aircraft models, as well as a separate office in the same region in charge of the training requirements.

The US Department of Transportation inspects the FAA for faults in Boeing 737 MAX

The Department of Transportation of the United States (DOT) is investigating the approval by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the aircraft of the Boeing 737 MAX line. The Department of Transportation’s investigation was initiated in the wake of the Lion Air JT-610 plane crash on October 29, 2019, in which 189 people died and is in charge of its inspector general, who has warned two FAA offices that protect computer files.

Both Boeing and the FAA did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Two government officials informed on the matter said it would not be surprising if the inspector general of the Department of Transportation investigated a major security problem. The research focuses on the anti-blocking system known as MCAS. Aviation authorities are investigating whether the system may have played a role in the Lion Air crash, as well as the March 10 accident of an Ethiopian Airlines flight that killed all 157 people on board, the newspaper said.

The Department of Transportation is trying to determine if the FAA used appropriate engineering design and analysis standards to certify the aircraft’s anti-blocking system, known as MCAS, according to the report. A \ W
