US airlines reactivate CRJ-200
New market approach for the regional CRJ-200
The Bombardier CRJ-200 regional jet, known for its narrow cabin and low windows, has been a candidate for commercial decommissioning by most airlines in the United States. The preference trend of most passengers has been discouraged by this type of aircraft. But a wind of change in regional market strategies has been turning heads for many US airlines.
Delta Connection announced that it would retire all CRJ-200s by December 2023, and more than a year ago United Express announced the retirement of all single-cabin aircraft by 2026 of which two types, the Embraer E145 and the CRJ-200, operate. As of April 2020, American Airlines, under the operations of regional American Eagle operates a large number of Embraer E145s and is now not retiring the dreaded CRJ-200, going against the industry-wide trend of ditching some of the tighter planes in the skies. During the summer of 2022, Air Wisconsin, a regional aircraft operator based in Appleton, Wisconsin, announced that it would be moving operators from United Express to American Eagle. It wasn’t more than five years ago that they made the switch from American to United, and the company now appears to be making a comeback. At this time, it appears that Air Wisconsin will resume flying the CRJ-200s under American Eagle in April 2023. There are nine destinations that have now been scheduled to receive the American Eagle CRJ-200 beginning sometime during the month of April 2023: Appleton, Wisconsin; Huntsville, Alabama; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Kalamazoo, Mich.; Dayton, Ohio; Flint, Mich. Waterloo, Iowa; Manhattan, Kansas; and Cedar Rapids, Iowa, are the cities currently scheduled to begin CRJ-200 service under the American Eagle brand, all of which will be served from the airline’s Chicago/O’Hare hub.
An evolving market presents continuous challenges for airlines that need to combine profitability and improvements in third-tier air service in the United States.

KLM seeks climate balance
New CEO seeks balance for the Dutch government on climate policy
The new CEO of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Marjan Rintel, has been in the job for less than five months and faces serious doubts about the future of the airline he runs. Amsterdam/Schiphol/AMS Airport has restricted the number of passengers due to staffing issues until March 2023, the lynchpin of the operation and success of KLM Airlines. But while staff numbers will eventually pick up, the Dutch Government wants to go a step further. A proposed climate policy would limit the number of flights to 440,000 annually starting in November 2023; That’s roughly 57,000 fewer flights than operated in 2019. Permanently limiting the number of flights could make it impossible for KLM to recover from, let alone overcome, the pandemic.
The Dutch government needs to «follow a balanced approach. Hopefully we can in the meantime discuss with the Dutch government that there are better solutions», said Marjan Rintel. With better solutions, he pointed to other ways the Dutch government could help the aviation sector reduce emissions and reduce noise, without artificially limiting flights at Schiphol. For example, KLM’s order book for new Airbus, Boeing and Embraer aircraft cuts fuel consumption and emissions by about a quarter and noise by up to 50 percent compared to previous generation aircraft, it said. Marjan Rintel. In addition, moving forward with the almost stalled Single European Sky air traffic control modernization initiative would reduce emissions by shortening flight paths.
KLM Airlines currently has an order for one hundred Airbus A320NEO and A321NEO aircraft on order, as well as seven Boeing 787-10 (7) and thirteen Embraer E195-E2 (13). Most of the new planes will replace older models in the airline’s fleet. But if the cap is implemented, KLM could be forced to cancel routes with its future growth prospects severely constrained. The airline has already said that flights to destinations ranging from Boston to Osaka, Porto and Tel Aviv could be in jeopardy. Without the ability to add new flights, KLM could be destined to incur ever higher costs without the ability to offset them with new revenue. The only growth option would be to operate larger aircraft on the flights it currently operates.
«We have meetings with them in a couple of weeks, so I hope they are at least open to listen and open to discuss. Hopefully we could at least discuss the ambition [to reduce emissions and noise], and see where our ambition is the same, and how can we achieve this ambition», said Marjan Rintel when asked if she saw the government as amenable to KLM’s position. Marjan Rintel took first place at KLM in July 2022 after CEO Pieter Elbers left for IndiGo Airlines.
Previously, Marjan Rintel was CEO of the Dutch rail operator NS for eight years, and before that he worked at both KLM and airport operator Schiphol Group. As a former railway executive, she sees significant promise in air-rail connections as a method of reducing carbon emissions. Rintel, as if to lead by example, took the train to Paris from Amsterdam on one of his first trips to group headquarters as KLM CEO. «We really need to promote going by train within 500 kilometres, 500 kilometres, 600 kilometres. KLM already has many blocks of seats on the Thalys trains connecting Schiphol to Brussels and Paris, which it said the airline will use to promote connections with the travelers. The airline has replaced one of its five daily Amsterdam-Brussels flights with a train», said the CEO of the Dutch airline. She did not comment on whether it would replace the remaining four flights.
Marjan Rintel’s optimism towards the promise of air-rail connections is a departure from his predecessor’s realistic view. While Pieter Elbers supported partnerships where possible, he said in 2021 that government funds could be «used more effectively in terms of investment in synthetic fuels, [and] in the single European airspace» to achieve decarbonisation targets. «We can’t deliver the demand that customers are asking», Marjan Rintel said when asked about travel demand this winter, particularly during the historically slow first quarter, echoing the sentiment of Air France-KLM executives in October 2022. KLM capacity will remain approximately 20 percent below 2019 levels until Schiphol lifts its passenger limits, which could be after December 2022.
Marjan Rintel expressed few concerns about the high inflation and energy prices facing Europeans this winter. She is significantly the first female leader of KLM in its century-plus history, and one of the few female airline CEOs in the world. Others include Anne Rigail at Air France, Christine Ourmières-Widener at TAP Air Portugal and Linda Markham at Cape Air. Stephanie Tully will take first place at Jetstar, a subsidiary of the Qantas Group, in January 2023.
KLM streeft naar klimaatbalans
Nieuwe CEO zoekt balans Klimaatbeleid kabinet

Predominance of A320NEO/737MAX production
Western Narrowbodies seek leadership beyond 2030
The Airbus A320NEO Family and Boeing 737 MAX will be the most prevalent narrow-body aircraft by 2032, according to insights revealed by IBA Insights, the leading aviation market intelligence and consulting company. In a webinar on narrow-body aircraft, IBA experts highlighted that the global capacity recovery towards 2019 has slowed in the second half of 2022, but continues in 2023. According to data from IBA’s Insight platform, this The slower recovery rate is heavily influenced by the Asia Pacific region, which is currently at only 55% of 2019 levels, through the end of October 2022.
Other intelligence from IBA Insight found that new narrow-body jet market values have largely recovered to pre-pandemic levels. For example, the 2022 base value of a new A320NEO is 3.5% higher than 2019, and the 2022 and 2019 values of a Boeing 737-8 MAX are on par. By contrast, mid-life aircraft values are recovering at a slower pace, with a 15-year-old A320-200 around 25% behind 2019 levels.
Sharing data on leasing rates, the IBA experts explained that new aircraft rates are rising above 2019 levels. This is largely due to a combination of tight supply and increased demand and the interest rates. In general, narrowbody lease rates are picking up and lease rate factors are increasing due to the cost of borrowing. Previous generation narrowbody leasing rates have followed a slower path of recovery but will benefit from new aircraft supply restrictions.
In the third edition of a new six-week webinar series titled «Ask the Appraiser», IBA experts also provided an update on macroeconomic and geopolitical risk in the narrow-body aircraft market. The webinar revealed that: 1. Passenger markets have opened up and demand is picking up with most travel restrictions now lifted. 2. Supply chain and OEM bottlenecks are slowly easing which in turn is helping lease rate recovery.
As Airbus suppliers in France struggle to keep pace with the A320NEO increase they have committed to and prepare for further production rate increases, recruitment tops their list of concerns, which will need to recruit staff to deal with long-standing recruitment problems. While Boeing also currently has a significant backlog to meet the high demand for orders placed for 737 MAX. Despite this, inflation, interest rates and labor costs are causing problems for the aviation industry. Operating costs are expected to rise due to rising labor and jet fuel costs. Also, a strong US dollar combined with sanctions on Russian oil will add more cost pressure for the industry.

New airline Fly Atlantic
Fly Atlantic plans transatlantic flights from Belfast
The new British airline Fly Atlantic intends to link Europe with North American destinations from Belfast International Airport in the summer of 2024. Its objective in its first leg is to fly to the United States and Canada, British and European destinations and, once fully operational, it plans to fly to 35 destinations. The next steps will be to secure aircraft and the company’s AOC license.
The airline says it will employ fifty people at Belfast International Airport and 250 crew. It plans to create 1,000 jobs in the first five years within the airline and indirectly create thousands more in the tourism and support sectors. The new airline says it will create a major hub linking Europe with North American destinations to complement local passenger numbers.
It will initially operate six aircraft out of its Antrim, Northern Ireland base, growing to a fleet of 18 aircraft by 2028. Lower-cost long-haul travel is not a new idea, but it has proven difficult to sustain in practice. Famous businessman Freddie Laker started a simple service between London and New York in the late 1970s, but it collapsed within five years. Hong Kong-based airline Oasis was another notable flop in 2008, having hoped to serve as many as 60 major cities. Norwegian Air was the most credible of recent attempts, but it was ultimately unraveled by the pandemic and has restructured to focus on the short haul.
Fly Atlantic Chief Executive Andrew Pyne said: «The lack of direct transatlantic air services has clearly been an impediment to Northern Ireland’s economic and tourism development, which we now intend to remove. We already have offices at the airport and now we will build the infrastructure to support the launch of the airline».
Belfast International Airport Managing Director Graham Keddie welcomed Fly Atlantic’s announcement: «We look forward to seeing this project through to fruition as it would have very real economic benefits for the Northern Ireland economy and further enhance our international connectivity», he said.
The airline has received support from Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council. Mayor Stephen Ross said that improving connectivity was a «key part of our economic development strategy and we are delighted that Fly Atlantic has selected Belfast International Airport to become a hub, offering direct flights to North America, UK and Europe».
The competition from Dublin Airport, which allows US-bound passengers to clear US immigration and customs checks prior to departure, is a factor to consider. Going up against EasyJet, which operates several routes from Belfast International will be a big challenge.

Mauricio Sana, CEO of the low cost airline, has expressed: “With these aircraft we seek to improve our product at the frequency level and the regional presence in Brazil, mainly, and we are evaluating other routes in the regional market. By 2023, our goal is to increase our presence in Argentina in the domestic market». Regarding the regional market, he specified: “A clear objective is to operate flights where occupancy is good enough, and this happens with Brazil, it is Argentina’s main economic and strategic partner. The possibility of resuming the route to Asunción, Paraguay, which we have already operated and are evaluating other countries, is being analyzed, but our limitation is the autonomy of our aircraft to fly with full capacity”.
Outlook 2023
Eleven months after the announcement of its 2X investment and growth Plan, the company has added five aircraft and recently announced that it will add two more to complete a fleet of twelve units in 2022. The increase in capacity will allow the frequency of both routes to be increased and reinforced. national and international and also prepare for the summer season with a very strong offer in the domestic market and on routes to Brazil. Regarding next year, Flybondi announced that it will launch a search for at least five Boeing 737-800 aircraft on the leasing market to add during 2023.
The fleet prospects for 2023 announced that they will end up operating with 17 aircraft, and will launch a search for at least five additional Boeing 737-800 aircraft on the leasing market. “When we talk about growth to seventeen aircraft, it is a huge investment, in a situation in which the company is self-sustaining, we are investing in the country with a movement of US$ 400 million, which implies the entire operation of the company. company”, said the CEO of Flybondi.
“We are very close to meeting the two major objectives that we set ourselves in December when we announced the growth plan: doubling the fleet and the number of passengers; and that motivates us to go for more. We have already launched the search for five new aircraft by 2023 and we are convinced that if the market is with us, we will have the possibility of reaching a fleet of 20 aircraft in the next two years. This year we saw a great recovery in domestic flights and record travel and tourism numbers, and our operation has already grown compared to the pre-pandemic. The projection for next year is to add more and more people to the freedom to fly», said Mauricio Sana, CEO of the airline Flybondi.

American fleet modernization
The fleet renewal process continues to become more efficient
American Airlines continues with the process of fleet modernization as a key way to reduce the use of conventional jet fuel, and therefore reduce the carbon footprint. The goal is to replace older, less fuel-efficient aircraft with new, more efficient ones. Since 2013, American has invested more than US$ 24 billion in modernizing our fleet, taking delivery of more than 600 new aircraft. During the same period, we retired 670 older and less fuel-efficient aircraft through the end of 2021. American currently owns the youngest mainline fleet among America’s classic network operators, with an average age of 11.3 years. As of the end of 2021, 55% of American’s core fleet was ten years old or younger.
New aircraft, such as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A321NEO, which incorporate the latest engine and airframe technologies, accounted for 17% of Available Seat Miles (ASM) in 2021. Approximately US$ 3.6 billion, or 12% of revenue for the year, came from passengers who flew on the market-leading, fuel-efficient aircraft in our fleet. The Boeing 737-8 MAX reduces fuel use and CO2 emissions by an additional 14% over the other most fuel-efficient single-aisle aircraft, and 20% better than the original 737 Next Generation aircraft when they entered service for first time. The Airbus A320NEO Family offers 20% fuel savings and CO2 reductions compared to the previous generation of Airbus A320CEO aircraft. Largely as a result of flying these more efficient aircraft, American has improved fuel efficiency by 10.2% compared to 2013, based on fuel consumption by ASM. That adds up to 1.9 billion gallons of fuel saved and 19 million metric tons of CO2 avoided.
As of late 2021, American Airlines had Boeing 737-8 MAX (42) in the fleet. In January 2022, they announced plans to exercise purchase options on an additional thirty (30) Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft, bringing total firm orders to an additional 88 deliveries through 2026. It also owned forty-four Airbus A321NEO (44) into the fleet by the end of 2021 and has agreed to purchase an additional seventy-six (76) for delivery through 2026, including state-of-the-art, long-range Airbus A321XLR (50). By 2026, the Texas (TX)-based airline will have approximately 34% of ASM flown by the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A321NEO.
In recent years, it has also made significant investments in upgrading our fleet of regional aircraft. Smaller planes and shorter flights, which spend a greater percentage of the total flight time taking off and landing, come at a cost of fuel efficiency. However, regional airlines allow American to serve many smaller communities and low-density markets that do not have the passenger traffic to support larger aircraft. This service plays a vital role in connecting members of those communities with other people, places, and economic opportunities. American is committed to providing industry-leading regional service while continually working to make that service more fuel efficient. This includes retiring a number of small regional jets in recent years and replacing them with large regional jets, such as the Embraer 175 and Bombardier CRJ900, which are on average more fuel efficient. It also continues to evaluate emerging low-carbon technologies, such as electric and hydrogen aircraft, that show promise for use in regional air travel.
American & environment
American Airlines received a CDP Climate Change Score of «A-» in 2021, the highest score among any airline in North America, and one of only two airlines globally to earn such a high score. Aviation decarbonisation requires near-term action to improve efficiency and significantly expand the use of SAF, but will also depend on technological advances that allow aircraft to run on low-carbon and zero-carbon fuel sources such as hydrogen. green and electricity. American continues to collaborate with our aircraft suppliers and other key players in the aviation industry to support the advancement of next-generation aircraft.
One initiative that will further this goal is American’s investment in Vertical Aerospace Ltd., which is developing an emissions-free electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Designed to quickly transport customers between and within cities, Vertical’s four-passenger piloted VX4 is projected to be capable of traveling distances of more than 100 miles at speeds in excess of 200 mph, while producing minimal noise and zero emissions. operational.

Improves results Norwegian
Recovery gains traction in 3Q2022
Norwegian Air Shuttle results showed significant improvement in the Q3 2022 period. Risk mode markets and a 25% capacity cut for winter could have led to underperformance. Improving metrics and good business execution make Norwegian Air Shuttle shares a speculative buy. Norwegian Air Shuttle is probably one of the companies that many expected to fail due to the impact of the pandemic, putting the company in a bad financial position and the airline began to cannibalize itself by selling off assets to keep business flowing. But the airline became heavily involved in the growth process, allowing the value of the Norwegian airline to increase. Fortunately, Norwegian Air Shuttle has reorganized itself at shareholder expense and is now pursuing a healthier flight forward.
In a risk-on mode in markets that puts pressure on recovery companies like Norwegian Air Shuttle as investors seek safer investment opportunities. Strategy execution at Norwegian Air Shuttle was marked by new investors with a shift in focus towards safer investments. Norwegian Air before the pandemic owned 156 aircraft, including long-haul operations. Currently, in the post-pandemic it has seventy (70) aircraft, although large fleet growth is not expected, given the company’s restraint in the post-pandemic after going through a critical period.
Currently, the Norwegian low-cost airline reflects a strong demand for air travel and a capacity increase of 128%. Approximately Kr 2.5 billion NOK of the Kr 5.2 billion increase is driven by increased capacity with the remainder being driven by an increase in unit revenue. Operating costs increased due to a combination of higher fuel prices, increased flight activity and unfavorable currency effects. However, operating profit improved significantly from a loss of Kr 295.5 million NOK to a profit of Kr 1 billion NOK. More significant are quarter-over-quarter comparisons and show revenue up nearly 50% significantly helped by record unit revenue and capacity expansion. On the cost side, fuel costs are higher quarter on quarter due to high fuel prices, but the results were good, as is also visible in EBITDAR, which improved from a loss of Kr 214 million Kroner. Norwegians to a profit of Kr 1.569 million despite some high costs due to wet leases, which are more expensive than flying own planes or long-term leases. EBIT shows a decrease of approximately NOK 300 million, but that was mainly driven by a reversal of impairment and does not really reflect underlying performance.
The risks for Norwegian Air Shuttle are actually the same as those seen by other airlines and are high inflation which could ultimately lead to weakening demand for air travel and high fuel prices which increase the fuel bill. But fortunately, Norwegian Air has some opportunities or cushions in the future. The company has a comfortable cash position with pre-delivery payments to Boeing in the coming years, as well as flexibility to move capacity over the winter, while eliminating associated costs to some extent through power lease agreements for hour. The airline likes to keep this flexibility going forward, although lessors’ lesser appetite to accommodate such contracts raises some question marks over how such flexibility can be achieved. Additionally, the airline has a cautious growth aspiration by adding Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to the fleet, which reduces the fuel bill by up to 18% in some cases compared to the Boeing 737 NG. Those 737 MAX planes should arrive at a faster rate over the next two years and beyond as the airline has purchase orders with Boeing, which require advance cash payments but no monthly lease payments. Thus, the airline will grow without having monthly cost overruns while unlocking economy ladders that should further increase performance.
Also, as the credit rating improves, Norwegian Air Shuttle will see cash from ticket sales arrive before buyers. For the quarter, the retention rate was 56% down from 65%, and as performance improves further, so will the credit rating, and the retention rate will decline further. Investors who are interested in investing should pay close attention to the combination of low price and low volume. Due to low volume, there is a lack of liquidity, making quick buying and selling and consistent prices more challenging. The fact that the price is extremely low per share apparently makes it more attractive to take speculative positions, but the lack of volume in combination with low share prices also significantly increases the risks for investors without an easy way to sell shares. when volatility increases. Investors should be aware of these additional risks when making investment decisions.

Approach Thanksgiving in the USA
Airlines seek to avoid collapse for Thanksgiving
US airlines are trying to avoid meltdowns as the longer Thanksgiving travel period begins. The recovery of the airlines and their ability to get travelers to their destinations on time after a chaotic summer face another test on Thanksgiving Day next Thursday 11/24. As the industry ramps up for one of its busiest periods of the year. Industry leaders have been gearing up for a Thanksgiving that looks more like a long, busy week of travel rather than a mad rush to the airport on Wednesday 11/23 and back again on Sunday 11/27. 11, the result of flexible hours that allow some to work from anywhere.
Since Thursday 11/17 more than two million people a day have passed through the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoints, while on Friday 11/18 it has exceeded 2.4 million passengers. The numbers have surpassed 2021 numbers and rival those of 2019. Currently, the occupancy rate is high with less than 1 percent of flights canceled and around a quarter delayed in recent days, according to FlightAware data.
This week’s US holiday is a major test of airlines’ pandemic-era recovery and their ability to get travelers to their destinations on time after a chaotic summer. It will also show how the pandemic has changed travel patterns, affecting business travel while opening the door to travel that combines work, leisure and visits with the family. Industry leaders are optimistic, saying increased bookings and fewer flights mean airlines have the staff to avoid major delays and cancellations. «We think we’ve done a good job of making sure we’re staffed, making sure people are trained, and having extra people on board to be able to handle Thanksgiving travel. And as a result, we’re confident the week is going to going well», said Sharon Pinkerton, Senior Vice President, Legislative and Regulatory Policy for the Airlines for America (A4A) trade group.
After a difficult summer that saw high cancellation rates, it drew the ire of passengers, lawmakers and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. Federal officials last week announced fines against six airlines for late refunds, signaling they would be watching how the holidays unfold. «We are delighted that demand is returning like no one thought possible, with more and more passengers who have the income and the desire to take to the skies. But we also know that it means airlines must continue to take steps to address the challenges of delivering service to the tickets they sell», said Pete Buttigieg on Monday 11/21 during a visit to Chicago/O’Hare International Airport.
Executives expect the Sunday 11/27 after Thanksgiving to be the busiest day for air travel during the period, when TSA said more than 2.5 million people could pass through its gates. United Airlines expects the day to be its busiest since the start of the pandemic, with some 460,000 passengers. The airline said it added 275 flights to its Sunday 11/27 schedule to meet demand.
Thanksgiving Monitoring
Outside the control of the airlines, the weather could put a damper on travel. Forecasters said Wednesday’s weather will be generally calm across the country, although a powerful storm system will be possible in the Eastern United States beginning Friday, 11/25. Analysts and airline officials say the overarching trend shaping the industry during the holidays and beyond is the ability for passengers to work remotely, ushering in a mix of business and leisure travel. Helane Becker, an analyst at financial firm Cowen Co, said that creates potential benefits for both airlines and their customers: «It’s more manageable, frankly for the airlines. It allows them to be less peaky. For customers, it allows them to get better prices». Rates remain high, rising in the early summer months before declining this fall. Average domestic rates tracked by booking app Hopper sit at around $325, well up from $268 at the same point in 2021 and slightly higher than 2019 prices.
During a recent earnings call, Vasu Raja, Chief Commercial Officer for American Airlines, said the airline is seeing increased demand during what were traditionally slower periods around Thanksgiving, such as Wednesday night 11/23. and Thursday 11/24 in the morning. «In fact, we are anticipating that Thanksgiving weekend, for example, will be peak, but even on the days around it, we will have a level of demand», Vasu Raja said.
While airline leaders are projecting confidence in their ability to handle the days ahead, the pandemic and the subsequent recovery have caught airlines off guard before. Thanksgiving last year went smoothly, maintaining confidence, only for the omicron variant and severe weather to create weeks of misery over Christmas and New Years.
Lyn Montgomery, President of TWU Local 556, which represents Southwest Airlines Flight Attendants, said workers are nervous as the holiday season begins. She said that even with nearly 4,000 new flight attendants on the job, operations remain chaotic. The company has made adjustments, such as flying a reduced schedule to better accommodate operations with available personnel, but Montgomery said a mishap in the fragile system can create turmoil. «We’re like dominoes. One thing happens and we just fall apart», Lyn Montgomery said.
Airline pilots turn up the pressure in salary talks as air travel increases. Southwest Airlines became the first airline to surpass 2019 employment numbers last summer, hiring 15,700 workers this year. Airline executives said they have made reliability a priority and will be able to handle the busy holiday travel season. «We’ve been very aggressive in trying to make sure we match our resources to our schedules for the full year», Southwest COO Mike Van de Ven said during a recent earnings call: «I feel like we’re really prepared to perform well over the holidays as we move into Thanksgiving and the Christmas season».
The pandemic has also changed the way travelers arrive at the airport, with fewer taking public transportation or using shuttle services. The trend has meant that garages at some airports are full at peak periods. Airport leaders have urged travelers to book a spot in advance or, when available, take a train for their flight. The Washington Metropolitan Airports Authority, which manages Dulles International and Reagan National airports, said travelers should expect heavy traffic and the possibility of full garages. Los Angeles International Airport officials created an automated Twitter account that provides updates on parking capacity every 30 minutes.
While ridership frequently rivals pre-pandemic numbers, the industry still faces long-term challenges. Several major airlines are in contentious contract negotiations with the pilots. The prospect of a strike is remote, but analysts say talks are expected to end with double-digit wage increases, on a percentage basis. That would add costs at a time when airlines are paying more for fuel and supplies, but union leaders say an agreement could provide stability.
Business and international travel, the main sources of revenue for airlines, also remain low as domestic leisure travel picks up. An analysis by Airlines for America showed Saturday and Sunday passenger counts are within 5 percent of 2019 levels, but Tuesday 11/22 and Wednesday 11/23 travel are down more than 10 percent, an indicator of the decline in business travel. Analysts say continued inflation or a recession could also dampen leisure travel.
Helane Becker said there are many reasons to be optimistic. A measure that compares the size of the economy to the number of tickets sold suggests that there is still room for the industry to grow. «I think that is why airline management is so optimistic. That is why I am more optimistic than I usually am», concludes the Cowen Co. analyst.
