Airbus cuts production

Airbus slows production due to supply problems

The European manufacturer Airbus Group, which accumulates more than 7,000 orders for commercial aircraft, has been forced to review its production plans for the future. Adding to supply chain challenges is increased aircraft requests

Airbus is reviewing the low rate of aircraft production as a result of supply chain problems. This is recognized by its CEO, Guillaume Faury, who explains that this challenge “is leading us to adjust the processes. Our aircraft delivery target for 2022 has been updated accordingly”. Added to this problem is the significant increase in aircraft requests by airlines, focused on renewing and expanding their fleets after overcoming the pandemic. All this has caused Airbus to accumulate more and more orders for commercial aircraft. As of June 30, 2022, the order book amounted to 7,046 units, compared to 6,925 on the same day in 2021. From January to June 2022, a total of 259 orders were received, an exponential increase from the first half of the previous year with 38 units, a period in which the crisis caused by the pandemic continued to strongly affect world aviation.

In the specific case of the A320 family, Airbus has revised its delivery plan, forecasting to reach a monthly rate of 65 new units in early 2024, around six months later than previously estimated. However, it maintains its objective of reaching a rate of 75 units per month in 2025 intact. Regarding wide-body aircraft, the manufacturer affirms that it is exploiting, together with its supply chain, “the viability of further increases of production rates to meet growing market demand as air travel recovers”.

JetSmart expande en Latinoamérica

AW | 2022 07 05 09:25 | AIRLINES

JetSmart expande su flota aeronaves
Aumentará servicios en América Latina

JetSmart_Isologotype.svg

JetSmart expands in Latin America

JetSmart expands its aircraft fleet
It will increase services in Latin America

Jetsmart Airlines resumes its fleet growth with the incorporation of the first Airbus A321NEO. The low-cost airline will strengthen its presence on medium-range routes such as Santiago-Peru or Santiago-Buenos Aires, and thus increase competition in the international segment. «The landing of this new model is very symbolic for us. Jetsmart is restarting a stage that we had to stop due to the outbreak of Covid-19. And now we are going to resume growth with the most sustainable aircraft design in South America», said the CEO of the company, Estuardo Ortíz.

The Indigo Partners fund bought 23 aircraft from Airbus, of which they are A321NEO (21) and A321XLR (2), increasing the fleet that Jetsmart will have in Latin America to 124 by 2030. The first unit landed in Chile in July, but in the course of of the months, another three will be added that are on the way, which will allow the low-cost company to reduce its fuel costs by 25% and expand its capacity.

Jetsmart’s strategy

Jetsmart reconfigured its future strategy to protect itself from the complex economic scenario. In fact, the landing of this plane is in line with that plan: it has a greater capacity with 240 seats and a lower operating cost, which implies more profitable flights. The next strategy is to focus on services with higher demand, such as the international stretches to Lima and Buenos Aires, or even in the domestic market to Antofagasta, La Serena and Puerto Montt. So far, Jetsmart has 69 destinations in Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Colombia and Uruguay.

The reinforcement of operations to these destinations abroad is due to the fact that the airline has an operations base in Buenos Aires and Lima. In fact, at the beginning of 2022 Jetsmart opened Peru, a territory in which it plans to become a relevant rival in the short term. In its first year of operation they estimate to transport a million passengers. «This is a market that has been growing at levels of 10% per year and has a lot of potential. There was a rationalization of competition, before the pandemic there were seven airlines and today with Jetsmart there are 3, so we believe that our growth prospects are very high in this country», said the CEO of JetSmart Airlines.

According to the vision of Estuardo Ortíz, the impact of inflation is not yet evident because the trend of national air traffic continues to grow month after month. However, the senior executive explained that in the short term it could affect consumption because people will become more sensitive to price. «The economic and political context of the region is very challenging, we have inflationary pressure and skyrocketing fuel prices. We are very sensitive to these aspects, but the key is to have a constant business model over time and maintain a renewed fleet because it allows lower operating costs and be competitively stronger», said Estuardo Ortíz. He added that given the increase in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) it is a good time to offer better offers that stimulate the market. «Since Jetmart began to operate, we have 35% less costs than a traditional airline and the plan is to continue at those levels and even increase our efficiency for the passenger, despite the rise in expenses», said Estuardo Ortiz.

Another of the initiatives promoted by Jetsmart to optimize its expenses was to temporarily close the base of operations in Antofagasta. According to the CEO of the airline, this decision was made because it depends a lot on international flights, a segment that continues to be in the doldrums.

Embraer alcanza ganancias 2Q2022

AW | 2022 07 04 14:57 | INDUSTRY

Embraer vuelve a reportar ganancias en 2Q2022

Embraer_Isologotype_002

Embraer achieves profits 2Q2022

Embraer returns to report earnings in 2Q2022

The Brazilian aircraft manufacturer Embraer announced on Thursday 08/04 a net profit of US$ 74.2 million in the second quarter of 2022, a reduction of almost 15% compared to the same period in 2021, but a rebound compared to last quarter. The result between April and June 2022 reflects a parallel reduction in revenue due to fewer deliveries in Commercial Aviation, Defense and Security, the company reported in a statement. Compared to the second quarter of 2021, revenues in these three items fell 27% (commercial aviation), 4% (executive aviation) and 31% (defense and security), the company detailed.

The 2Q2022 results represent an improvement compared to 1Q2022, when the company had reported losses of US$ 31.7 million, affected by a stoppage of its production system for almost a month in January 2022. In the second quarter of 2022, Embraer delivered eleven commercial aircraft of the E175 and E195-E2 models and 21 executive jets. So far this year, the manufacturer has delivered a total of 46 aircraft, 17 commercial and 29 executive. Firm orders booked through the second quarter are equivalent to a value of US$ 17.8 billion, the highest level since the second quarter of 2018. This forecast does not include the sale of twenty E195-E2 jets to the Canadian firm Porter Airlines announced in July 2022, which will make up the next quarterly balance.

Sao Paulo-based Embraer ended 2Q2022 with net debt of US$ 1.2 billion, down from US$ 1.5 billion in the previous quarter and US$ 1.8 billion in the same period of 2021.

Airbus cancela venta A350 Qatar

AW | 2022 07 04 14:50 | INDUSTRY / AIRLINES

Airbus cancels sale of A350 Qatar

Airbus_Group_Logo_2014.svg - copia

Airbus Group has announced the cancellation of the pending A350 order with the Arab airline Qatar Airways. The Qatari airline had bought 74 aircraft of this model. The cancellation of the pending orders is crossed by the conflict with a difference in the plane of the aircraft design and some errors related to the painting of the aircraft. The origin of the conflict is not discussed, the paint of the A350 of Qatar Airways has been degraded. Airbus accepts this point, but says that it is a purely aesthetic issue that it is working on, while Qatar has grounded these planes and refused to receive additional units. Qatar had bought 74 Airbus A350s. Of those, 21 are still pending and it seems that they will not be delivered to the airline, first because Qatar Airways refused to accept them and now because Airbus has canceled the contract.

Airbus Group defends the safety of the A350 and threatens a legal battle. At the same time, British judges have yet to determine what will happen to Qatar’s order to Airbus, although tension between the two sides is at unprecedented levels. It must be remembered that the two contenders, Airbus and Qatar, are winning companies in the sense that both are very successful with their business models and products, which further fuels the position of those responsible.

While the Justice pronounces, everything indicates that Qatar Airways is going to have to feed on planes from the Boeing line, which is a problem when negotiating with the American manufacturer. Qatar Airways currently has backorders for twenty-three Boeing 787-9s (23), twenty-five Boeing 737-10 MAXs (25) and forty Boeing 777-9s (40). These three aircraft models are in the stage of certification and/or technical reviews, so you will have to wait some time to receive them; while it must ultimately resort to the rental of additional aircraft if the demand so defines it.

DOT EEUU reglas reembolsos

AW | 2022 07 04 14:49 | AVIATION ORGANISMS / GOVERNMENT / AIRLINES MARKET

US DOT rules refunds

DOT proposed for more defined rules on refunds

The US Department of Transportation (DOT) has proposed tougher rules for airline refunds after complaints mount. The DOT proposed on Wednesday 08/03 stricter rules on when airlines would have to compensate passengers for canceled or delayed flights, a measure that follows an increase in complaints from travelers after the global pandemic. Air travelers are currently entitled to a refund if their flights are canceled or significantly changed or delayed and they decide not to travel. But the agency had not defined what constitutes a significant change.

The Department for Transport is now proposing to define that as a departure or arrival time that is off by at least three hours for domestic flights, or at least six hours for international flights. Travelers would also be entitled to a refund if the route changes or a connection is added, as well as if an aircraft change causes significant degradation in amenities or other features.

Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has publicly admonished airlines in recent weeks over a spike in flight cancellations and delays, while industry executives and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have pointed fingers. who is to blame. Some Democratic lawmakers have called for better consumer protections for air travelers. Complaints about airline refunds accounted for 87% of the 102,560 complaints DOT recorded in 2020 and about 60% of the 49,958 complaints in 2021.

The DOT also proposed requiring airlines to provide flight credits or coupons with no expiration dates if passengers are unable to fly due to Covid-19, including lockdowns, travel restrictions or personal health reasons. «When Americans buy a plane ticket, they need to get to their destination safely, reliably and affordably», Pete Buttigieg said in a press release.

Airlines for America (A4A), which represents major airlines such as American Airlines, United Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, JetBlue Airways, are part of the airline conglomerate. The pandemic and the collapse in demand for air travel led some airlines to make their tickets more flexible. For example, American, United, and Delta all got rid of ticket change fees for standard economy tickets in 2020. Last week, Southwest, which also didn’t charge ticket change fees before the pandemic, said the coupons it issues they will never expire. DOT’s proposed rules are open to public comment for a period of ninety (90) days.

Garuda devuelve último 737 MAX

AW | 2022 07 04 13:30 | AIRLINES

Garuda returns last 737 MAX

Garuda Indonesia has returned its only Boeing 737 MAX
Indonesian airline fleet restructuring

Garuda Indonesia Airlines has announced the retirement of the only Boeing 737 MAX in its fleet, returning the aircraft to its leasing company owner. The MAX 8 has been out of service for the past three years after it was grounded in March 2019 following two plane crashes. Indonesia’s flag carrier will cut its fleet as restructuring continues. On July 19, 2022, the Boeing 737-8 MAX with registration PK-GDA departed from its warehouse at Soekarno-Hatta/CGK International Airport, Jakarta, en route to Woensdrecht Air Base near the city of Bergen op Zoom, Netherlands, making a technical stopover at Al Ain International Airport.

Garuda Indonesia’s last Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft has officially left the airline’s fleet after three years of being parked. The Boeing 737-8 MAX is just under five years old and entered service with Garuda Indonesia in December 2017. The aircraft spent just fifteen months in active service before MAX aircraft around the world were grounded in early 2019.

Garuda has returned the aircraft to its lessor while making a number of significant fleet adjustments. The aircraft had been parked in Jakarta since March 2019 after the two 737 MAX crashes involving Lion Air flight JT-610 and Ethiopian Airlines flight ET-302. Despite Indonesia giving the green light for Boeing 737 MAX operations in December 2021, Garuda Indonesia has never resumed service of its sole 737 MAX.

Garuda Indonesia has an order with Boeing for fifty (50) Boeing 737 MAXs, but is in negotiations to cancel after taking delivery of only one MAX due to failure to meet the deal valued at US$4.9 billion.

The aircraft is owned by Chinese leasing firm Bocomm Leasing, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Bank of Communications of China. Bocomm Leasing was established in 2007 and has become one of the largest aviation lessors in China. The firm now has 170 aircraft in its portfolio with a further 200 on order, serving more than 50 domestic and international clients.

Garuda Indonesia Airlines has reached a phase of restructuring the airline regarding its fleet with projections of adding between 60 and 70 aircraft by the end of 2022, which represents a reduction between 30-40% compared to previous estimates of more than one hundred initially stipulated aircraft. The airline will focus on serving domestic and regional routes, while cutting back on long-haul operations.

Garuda kembalikan 737 MAX terakhir

Garuda Indonesia Kembalikan Satu-Satunya Boeing 737 MAX
Restrukturisasi armada maskapai penerbangan Indonesia

Garuda_Indonesia.svg

Pesawat Boeing 737-8 MAX terakhir Garuda Indonesia resmi meninggalkan armada maskapai setelah tiga tahun diparkir.

AW | 2022 07 04 12:35 | AVIATION ORGANISMS / AVIATION SAFETY

FAA new directive for Boeing 777

They order revision of versions of the 777 model

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued on Tuesday 08/02 an Airworthiness Directive (AD) for all Boeing 777 for safety reasons. The aviation agency issued a new directive to correct a problem in the so-called Gust Suppression Sensor, a measure motivated by the high electrical resistance identified within this system. The measure affects or covers 279 aircraft of all variants of this model, including versions 200, 200ER, 200F, 200LR, 300, 300ER and -300ERF registered in the United States and operated by companies such as American Airlines and United Airlines, in addition to various other cargo airlines, such as FedEx Express.

The Gust Suppression System is a non-essential feature of the Boeing 777, which provides improved maneuverability of the aircraft during low speed crosswind gusts. Carriers operating the 777 must turn off the gust suppression feature within three months or before reaching 75,000 flight hours, the FAA said in a statement. The system is not essential for aircraft and does not affect safety, as long as the measures adopted by the FAA are strictly followed, there are no major implications and airlines can fly without any problem.

The Airworthiness Directive, which took effect immediately, also requires aircraft operators to disconnect connectors, cap and store cables connected to modules affected by sensor corrosion. According to the agency, the manufacturer is already working on developing a sensor modification to correct the problem and once it is ready and certified, it will issue a new updated Airworthiness Directive (AD).

China áreas exclusión aérea

AW | 2022 07 03 16:11 | AIR TRAFFIC / GOVERNMENT / AVIATION SAFETY

China anuncia zona exclusión aérea
Anuncio ejercicios militares chinos en zona
Aeropuerto Taoyuan minimiza especulaciones

China non-fly areas

China announces no-fly zone
Announcement of Chinese military exercises in the area
Taoyuan Airport plays down speculation

The People’s Republic of China has warned airlines to avoid airspace near Taiwan as Beijing steps up military exercises on the sidelines of a visit by the US House Representative, China imposes undeclared no-fly zone over Taiwan. Six areas in the region have been designated as danger zones, the closest being just nine nautical miles from Taiwan.

Beijing highlighted six danger zones for airlines. The warning comes amid US House Representative Nancy Pelosi’s controversial visit to Taiwan. After she landed, China announced that it would hold military exercises, including live exercises, around Taiwan from Thursday 08/04 to Sunday 08/07, the state-run Xinhua News Agency wrote in an announcement authorized by the Chinese Defense Ministry.

Airlines & airports

Different statements from the airlines in the region have expressed their concerns regarding the tensions between China-Taiwan and the visit of a representative of the United States to the region. Cathay Pacific Airlines said it is monitoring developments in the region very closely. «Our flights currently avoid passing through designated airspace zones around the Taiwan region. This can potentially lead to longer flight times for some flights and we appreciate our customers’ understanding», the Hong Kong-based airline said. Korean Air has said it plans to redirect some flights to South Asia to avoid Taiwanese airspace in the coming days. China Xiamen Airlines announced adjustments to several flights, citing Flow Control in Fujian, just across the Taiwan Strait from the island. ANA Airlines received the notice and is changing its flight routes to Taiwan, a representative of the Japanese airline said. ANA Airlines and Japan Airlines both companies said that flights to and from Taiwan will continue to operate.

Taiwan is talking with Japan and the Philippines about alternative air traffic routes, citing Wang Kwo-tsai, Minister of Transportation and Communications. The Taiwan Maritime Port Office also warned ships to avoid the area where the drills will take place.

At Xiamen Gaoqi/XMN International Airport, China, one of the closest mainland airports to Taiwan, 123 flights were canceled while 79% of flights were operating as usual, according to data provider Variflight. At Fuzhou Changle International Airport in Fujian/FOC, China, 93 flights were scrapped and 74% of the flights were operating normally.

China’s announcement of military exercises and heightened tensions across the strait led to intense speculation in Taiwan over whether flight disruptions at Taiwanese airports this week are due to the drills. On Wednesday 08/03 alone, more than thirty flight cancellations were recorded from Taiwan’s Taoyuan International Airport/TPE. Forty other flights scheduled for Thursday 04/08 have also been cancelled. The airport played down the speculation, telling the news outlet that the cancellations have nothing to do with China’s military exercises and operations are running normally. Taiwan’s borders remain largely closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Aerolíneas limita tickets exterior

AW | 2022 07 03 11:33 | AIRLINES / GOVERNMENT

Limit sale of tickets from abroad

Aerolíneas Argentinas_Isotype_WMk

Aerolíneas Argentinas decided to limit from Tuesday 08/02 the sale of tickets leaving from foreign cities to Argentina and will only offer the most expensive seats for those passengers. As indicated by the company, the measure was taken because they detected an increase in the issuance of tickets from the country and a decrease in that which takes place abroad in Dollar or Euro currency. Market sources, meanwhile, said that the practice of the roll is old and that the Central Bank had made a recent request for information from the industry. “We began to perceive an increase in the issuance of tickets with the start of the itinerary abroad, but whose purchase was made in Argentina, with Argentine credit cards at the values established by local regulations (tourist dollar). In this way, the issuance of tickets abroad, the main source of foreign exchange for the company, was decreasing», they explained from Aerolíneas.

In accordance with this, they limited this type of emissions only to the highest fares, in order to discourage the passenger who begins his itinerary abroad from purchasing his ticket at his place of origin from where he can access the entire inventory. fare available by the airline. «This measure has the sole objective of guaranteeing the entry of foreign currency to the company from its operation abroad», they added from the airline. The company seeks to avoid certain speculation that was beginning to generate. Supposedly, there were tourist agencies or Argentines with friends or relatives abroad who offered to get the tickets with a credit card in Argentine Pesos in exchange for later receiving the Dollars that they changed to the Blue Dollar value to keep the difference. Although they did not say how much the issuance had increased in Argentina and how much it had decreased abroad, it is understood that the maneuver would have increased from the greater exchange rate gap. “We do not restrict the sale, but if you buy to start the trip from abroad, it will show you the highest rates for you to pay in Dollars or Euros. It is a commercial decision of the company that adapts its fare policy to market behavior”, they expressed from Aerolíneas Argentinas.

Market sources said that the measure of Aerolíneas coincides with a recent request for information from the Central Bank to the industry. The agency sought to know if the airlines were accessing the foreign exchange market with Pesos from local sales or, as in the case of Aerolíneas, with foreign sales paid locally that took advantage of the gap, but at the same time had an impact on reserves.

“Aerolíneas can access the foreign exchange market and remit freely because most of their costs here and abroad are in hard currency: insurance, fuel, airport taxes, air navigation services and catering are billed in Dollars. For this reason, access to the foreign exchange market and free repatriation are essential for air transport, as established by international treaties. But one thing is the normal sale of services abroad (such as a connecting flight) and another is to use Argentina as the emission center to take advantage of the gap and also dry it up with reservations to the Central with sales that are not normally native”, they warned.

While a few airlines and agencies were issuing abroad to increase their collection, the vast majority had adjusted the channel to prevent the growth of this type of sales in the total after the experience of 2013.

División 7th Cir. derivaciones 737 MAX

AW | 2022 07 03 11:11 | GOVERNMENT / INDUSTRY

Division 7th Cir. 737 MAX derivations

Court acts on the Boeing Bylaws

A divided panel of the Seventh Circuit of the Judicial Court of Little Rock, State of Arkansas (AR), United States, said on Friday 07/29 that The Boeing Company cannot use its bylaws to prevent shareholders from filing derivative federal claims alleging that its directors and board officers issued false and misleading statements about Boeing 737 MAX aircraft in the years leading up to two fatal accidents.

The 2-1 appeals panel revived a shareholder derivative lawsuit that the Seafarers Pension Plan had filed in Illinois (IL) Federal Court alleging that current and former Board members and executives of The Boeing Company issued proxy materials false and misleading information about the development and operation of the 737 MAX in the period from 2017 to 2019.

The majority of the Seventh Circuit reversed the June 2020 decision of a Northern District Court of Illinois that dismissed the lawsuit based on a forum selection clause in Boeing’s statutes that provides that the Delaware Court of Chancery is the sole and exclusive forum for any derivative action or proceeding brought on behalf of the corporation. Boeing’s headquarters were located in Chicago (IL), but it is incorporated under Delaware law. Currently the corporate headquarters has moved to Arlington, Virginia (VA).

The majority of the panel concluded on Friday 07/29 that Boeing’s forum selection rules are inapplicable in this case because they conflict with the Delaware Corporate Law and the Federal Securities Act. Seafarers alleges that Boeing’s false and misleading statements harm the company by «enabling the improper reappointment of directors who for years had tolerated poor oversight of passenger safety, regulatory compliance, and risk management during the aircraft’s development of passengers 737 MAX». Seafarers also alleges that the false and misleading statements were used to obtain shareholder votes to re-elect and secure the very Board members whose oversight failures led to the 737 MAX disasters, as well as to approve executive compensation packages and reject Shareholder proposals that sought to separate the roles of CEO and Chairman of the Board, according to court documents.

The Boeing 737 MAX was involved in two fatal accidents abroad in five months: the October 29, 2018 crash of Lion Air flight JT-610 in Indonesia, in the Java Sea, which killed all 189 people on board, and the March 10, 2019 accident of Ethiopian Airlines flight ET-302, near the City of Bishoftu, killing all 157 occupants. What followed was an unprecedented twenty-month global grounding of the planes, multiple investigations targeting Boeing’s mistakes in the plane’s development and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) oversight failures, and dozens of lawsuits. from the families of the crash victims, stockholders, airline customers and others accusing Boeing of short-cutting safety in its pursuit of profit. The FAA in November 2020 cleared the 737 MAX to return to service.

Seafarers launched this lawsuit in December 2019, and Boeing invoked its forum statute to have the action dismissed. The Seventh Circuit heard oral arguments in November 2020. The majority of the panel said on Friday 07/29 that the Statute completely eliminates the right of shareholders to assert derivative claims under the Securities Exchange Act, in violation of the mandate of the Congress that the Federal Courts retain exclusive jurisdiction over those claims.
