Ampliación como parte de la alianza northeast con JetBlue

American Airlines está avanzando con el crecimiento junto a la Alianza del Noreste con JetBlue Airways. La aerolínea con sede en Fort Worth dio a conocer el Viernes 27/05 seis nuevas rutas desde Nueva York.

La aerolínea lanzará cuatro rutas desde Nueva York LaGuardia (LGA) y dos desde JFK, de la siguiente manera: Nueva York LaGuardia/LGA—Tulsa/TUL, servicio diario (1Frq/D) durante todo el año a partir del 03/11/2022. LaGiardia/LGA—Little Rock/LIT, con frecuencia diaria (1Frq/D) durante todo el año a partir del 03/11. Expansion as part of the northeast alliance with JetBlue

American Airlines is forging ahead with growth in conjunction with the Northeast Alliance with JetBlue Airways. The Fort Worth-based airline announced on Friday 05/27 six new routes from New York.

The airline will launch four routes from New York LaGuardia (LGA) and two from JFK, as follows: New York LaGuardia/LGA—Tulsa/TUL, daily service (1Frq/D) year-round beginning 11/03/ 2022. LaGiardia/LGA—Little Rock/LIT, daily (1Frq/D) year-round beginning 11/03. LaGuardia/LGA—Asheville/AVL with daily flights (1Frq/D) between November 3, 2022 and April 3, 2023. LaGuardia/LGA—Key West/EYW with daily flights (1Frq/D) between November 3, November 2022 and April 3, 2023. New York/JFK—Bermuda Islands/BDA with daily services between November 3, 2022 and October 28, 2023. New YOrk/JFK—Monterrey, Mexico/MTY with frequencies daily (1Frq/D) between November 3, 2022 and October 28, 2023.

American is currently selling service from LaGuardia to Asheville and Key West for this northern summer, but the airline is extending service for another season, and increasing frequency to daily, as part of the Friday 5/27 announcement.

Separately, the airline last flew between New York/JFK and Bermuda before the pandemic, and now the airline is bringing the route back as part of the Northeast Alliance.

The Northeast Alliance (NEA) was first unveiled in July 2020 as a way for American Airlines and JetBlue Airways to grow in New York and Boston. Both airlines felt excluded from the two metropolitan areas due to stiff competition from Delta and United. The NEA was created to unlock mutual growth opportunities for more flights with both airlines, the companies have previously said. To date, American has added several high-profile international routes, including soon-to-launch service to Tel Aviv (TLV), Athens (ATH), New Delhi (DEL) and Doha (DOH). Both airlines have also added a large number of domestic routes. In addition, the airlines have introduced new reciprocal frequent flyer benefits as part of the pact. The link has been heavily scrutinized under the Biden administration, culminating in a Justice Department lawsuit in mid-September 2021 alleging the pact is anti-competitive.

While the result of the lawsuit is still awaited, the two operators are still carrying out network expansions. For American, adding new routes comes at an interesting time. For one thing, JetBlue recently announced its bid to take over Spirit Airlines, which would apparently put the NEA at risk with regulators. JetBlue has vociferously defended both the NEA and its Spirit takeover proposal, saying it believes regulators would allow the airline to proceed with both.

Meanwhile, Spirit’s board and many aviation watchers have questioned JetBlue’s reasoning. The New York-based airline hasn’t said publicly whether it’s willing to leave the NEA to continue its hostile takeover bid, though we may never know if the proposed takeover doesn’t happen. For its part, American has declined to comment on the future of the NEA, although it seems clear that nothing is changing anytime soon.

Moreover, the addition of these new routes comes just hours after American announced that it is cutting several international routes it first launched under the NEA, including New York-JFK to Cali and Medellin in Colombia. American Airlines will use the slots, along with some additional frequency cuts elsewhere, to fly this latest round of expansion.
