Boeing_Isologo.svg

Boeing Report 2Q2022

Second report 2Q2022 of the aerospace company

The Boeing Company reported second quarter (2Q2022) revenue of US$ 16.7 billion, GAAP earnings per share of US$ 0.32 and loss per share (non-GAAP)* of US$ 0.37, driven by lower defense volume and an unfavorable performance, partially offset by higher commercial volume. Boeing recorded positive operating cash flow of US$ 100 million.

«We made significant progress on key programs in the second quarter and are gaining momentum on our turnaround. As we begin to achieve key milestones, we were able to generate positive operating cash flow this quarter and remain on track to achieve positive cash flow, positive free by 2022. While we are making significant progress, we have more work ahead of us. We will remain focused on safety, quality and transparency, while driving stability, improving performance and continuing to invest in our future», said Dave Calhoun, President and CEO of Boeing.

Commercial aircraft

AW-Boeing 737 MAX_png (44)

Commercial Airplanes second-quarter revenue increased to $6.2 billion, driven by higher deliveries of the 737 MAX line, partially offset by lower deliveries of the 787 Dreamliner. The 3.9% operating margin also reflects abnormal costs and expenses for the period, including higher research and development spending.

Boeing has nearly completed the global safe return to service of the 737 MAX and the fleet has flown more than 1.5 million total flight hours since the end of 2020. The 737 production rate increased to 31 aircraft per month during the quarter.

In the 787 Dreamliner Program, the company continues to work with the FAA to finalize actions to resume deliveries and is preparing aircraft for delivery. The program is producing at a very low rate and will continue to do so until deliveries resume, with an expected gradual return to five per month over time. The company still anticipates 787 abnormal costs of approximately US$ 2 billion, with most to be incurred by the end of 2023, including US$ 283 million recorded in the second quarter.

Commercial Airplanes won orders for 169 737 MAX aircraft and 13 freighters, including seven 777-8 freighters from the Lufthansa Group. Commercial Airplanes delivered 121 aircraft during the quarter and the order book included more than 4,200 aircraft valued at US$ 297 billion.

GAAP: Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.

GAAP: Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. They are the generally accepted accounting principles used by companies in the United States or listed on Wall Street. They encompass a massive volume of standards, interpretations, opinions and bulletins and are produced by the FASB (Financial Accounting Standards Board or Financial Accounting Standards Board), by the accounting profession (the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

It is a combination of standards authorized by regulatory organizations and accepted ways of keeping accounts. There are many similarities between United States GAAP (US GAAP) and International Financial Reporting Standards (NIIF) in financial statement presentation. For example, under both frameworks, the components of a complete series of financial statements include: balance sheet, income statement, other general basis of income (OCI) for US GAAP, or the Statement of Recognized Income and Expenses (SORIE) for NIIF. In addition, both frameworks require, barring exceptional circumstances, that the financial statements be prepared on the accrual basis of accounting (with the exception of the statement of cash flows). The two GAAP have similar concepts regarding materiality and consistency requirements that entities must consider when preparing their financial statements.

US-GAAP is the US equivalent of International Financial Reporting Standards. They are very detailed, reflecting the litigation environment in the United States, which requires increasingly detailed regulation. US-GAAP cannot deviate from the SEC’s regulatory introversion.

Aerolíneas reduce pérdidas

AW | 2022 07 27 12:0 | AIRLINES / GOVERNMENT

Aerolíneas Argentinas has reported the approval of its financial statements as of December 31, 2021, in which it announced that losses had been reduced by more than a third compared to 2019. The losses recognized in the financial statements reached AR$ 45,000 million pesos, about US$ 450 million dollars at the average official exchange rate that does not reflect the US$ 650 million dollars contributed by the State.

While the national government and the private tourism sector maintain their differences regarding the taxes that affect the activity, Aerolíneas Argentinas continues to generate a deficit in its numbers and is subsidized by the State. It is estimated that each taxpayer contributes to the payment of between one and two million dollars a day to support an airline that uses less than 5% of Argentines.

During 2021, the total number of passengers transported was 50% less than the more than ten million transported in 2019, so the losses per transported passenger increased by more than 30% comparing the year 2019 against 2021. Meanwhile, the 2022 national budget contemplates an additional item of AR$ 9,357 million Pesos to update the AR$ 63,551 million Pesos assigned in December 2021 to Aerolíneas Argentinas, 15% more than last year, which clearly does not cover inflation. Between January and April 2022, the airline received funds from the National Government for around AR$24 million Pesos, which is equivalent to US$222.6 million Dollars.

DOT multa aéreas por retrasos/tarifas

AW | 2022 07 27 11:30 | AIRLINES / AVIATION ORGANISMS

DOT aplicaría sanciones debido cancelaciones y retrasos

DOT to fine airlines for delays and fees

DOT would apply penalties due to cancellations and delays

The Department of Transportation (DOT) of the United States could take strong measures against the airlines, due to the claim of Senators Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) and Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), due to the increase in fares on flights national, cancellations and delays. The Senators sent a letter to Pete Buttigieg, Secretary of the DOT, asking to apply sanctions against the airlines for their operational failures: «We write to urge the Department of Transportation to use fully its legal authority to protect consumers and promote competition in the industry of the airlines», expresses the letter sent to the Department of Transportation of the United States. In addition, they claim for the increase in rates that would already reach 34.1% in June 2022 for domestic flights. «After receiving tens of billions of dollars in assistance from American taxpayers, the major airlines have responded by dramatically increasing ticket prices and reaching new lows in the treatment of travelers», the Senators said in the letter.

They also mentioned the benefits that the Government granted to the airlines, close to US$ 58 billion in federal subsidies. «To end these harmful consumer practices and safeguard competition in the industry, the department must play a leadership role by aggressively using the authority granted to it by Congress», the Senators said.

The DOT responded by saying that it has had the collaboration of the airlines lately and that they have contributed to the solution with more reasonable schedules by the carriers, increasing their focus on customer service and increasing the wages of the workers. «DOT will continue to take action to protect the rights of airline passengers and the rights of consumers, and when airlines fail to meet their responsibilities, they will be held accountable», the DOT said.

In the case of United Airlines, CEO Scott Kirby has predicted flight delays and cancellations until next year, although they will gradually improve their schedules and departures on time with the hiring of personnel. «Our basic assumption is that it will gradually improve and we won’t be back to normal utilization and normal staffing levels until next summer», Scott Kirby said.

Colombia sanctions 19 airlines

Sanction for contracts that would violate user rights

The Colombian Transport Superintendence has initiated some investigations of the clauses that are expressly prohibited by law in conditions that could affect the rights of air transport users. The actions would involve sanctions to nineteen airlines for a total sum of COP$1,478,099,196. As a result of twenty-four administrative investigations, carried out for the alleged breach of the provisions of the Consumer Statute that prohibit the inclusion of abusive clauses in contracts, the Superintendence of Transport sanctioned nineteen airlines, exonerated another four from responsibility and there is one more case. which is still in progress.

“The informal work carried out by the Superintendency in detecting abusive clauses in the transport contracts of 24 airlines is proof that administrative supervision is essential to promote the effective realization of the rights of all users in the sector and defend the interest general provided for in the regulations. We work rigorously so that all of us as travelers can access an air transport service in which compliance with the law prevails and thus avoid unjustified imbalances”, says the Superintendent of Transport, Wilmer Arley Salazar Arias.

In February and March 2021, the Transportation Superintendence inspected the websites of airlines operating in the country, in order to verify the availability and content of their transportation contracts, to which users had access. This is how 69 contractual clauses were reviewed, finding that 56 of them contained abusive provisions such as, for example, the limitation of the liability of the airlines and the waiver of the rights of the users, which could generate an unjustified imbalance to the detriment of travelers, affecting the time, manner or place in which they could exercise their rights. Among the sanctioned airlines are: Wingo, Latam Airlines, Aeroméxico, Air Europa, Air France, Avianca Airlines, Avior Airlines, Copa Airlines, Easyfly, Viva Air, GCA Airlines, Iberia Líneas Aéreas, JetBlue Airways, KLM Airlines, Satena Airlines, Turkiyë Airlines and United Airlines.

Some of the clauses found in the contracts published by the airlines:
They were unaware of joint and several liability in cases where flights are operated under the figure of shared code.
The obligations of the airline in the execution of the transport contract were reduced.
They affected respect for reservations duly made by passengers.
They failed to inform users of the changes or developments that occurred on the flight.
They limited the responsibility in the transport of the luggage.
affected the right to obtain reimbursements according to the applicable regulations.
They restricted the right to obtain compensation in the cases provided by law.
They did not provide complete, truthful and suitable information on the way in which passengers could exercise their rights when conflicts arising from the interpretation or execution of the transport contract arose.

Sanctions applied

As a result of the foregoing, the amount of the sanctions imposed on the nineteen airlines found responsible for including abusive clauses in their transport contracts, add up to a total of COP$ 1,478,099,196 and, in addition, the Superintendency of Transport ordered some airlines to adjust, in a term of five days, the contractual clauses qualified as abusive.

Lufthansa German Airlines has announced a workers’ strike for Wednesday 27/07. As part of the consequences, the German airline cancels almost all scheduled flights in Germany due to the planned strike by the Verdi Union that will affect more than a thousand scheduled flights. Lufthansa announced that it will cancel flights from its distribution centers in Frankfurt/FRA and Munich/MUN. The airline also expects effects to be felt at airports in Berlin, Bremen, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Hannover and Stuttgart. The announcement of Tuesday 07/25 will make the operations of many European airlines more difficult due to multiple claims from the sector.

The airline has reported complications on the effects going forward as the effects of the one-day strike were felt. In total, more than 1,000 flights will be canceled with an estimated 134,000 affected passengers.

The Verdi union has called the roughly 20,000 employees that make up Lufthansa’s ground staff to strike in an effort to put pressure on management in ongoing wage negotiations.

Michael Niggemann, Lufthansa’s Head of Human Resources, criticized the decision to call a strike, saying it was an «early escalation after only two days of negotiations in what has so far been a constructive round of collective bargaining. The airline is exercising pressure on our employees in an already difficult phase of air traffic».

What should passengers do?

The airline advised against coming to the airport, as there will be almost no customer service at the available service counters. He also warned passengers not to fly to German hubs without a connecting flight, as it could take hours, if not days, to get those passengers out on new flights.

AW-Lufthansa_Isotype

Was sollen Fahrgäste tun?

Flybondi/JetSmart proyectan San Juan

AW | 2022 07 26 15:10 | AIRLINES ROUTES

They seek to expand domestic routes in the Cuyo Region

The Government of the Province of San Juan, Argentina, seeks to expand air connections with the rest of the country. The Minister of Tourism of the Province, Claudia Grynzspan, highlighted those talks are being held with Flybondi Líneas Aéreas and JetSmart Airlines Argentina to add flights, but the current fuel problem makes it difficult to achieve.

Adding more flights on the air routes that include San Juan is one of the objectives that mobilized the authorities of the Ministry of Tourism of San Juan in the first half of 2022. «We will not be able to have results next month because the fuel makes that the expansion of these companies will be delayed. Without a doubt, San Juan is in a position to bring more flights and we have achieved it», said Minister Claudia Grynszpan.

The official said that the flights that come to the province as well as those that have their route to Buenos Aires, have an almost complete occupation, of more than 90%. This generates great interest in the sector and they look favorably on San Juan. «Low cost companies look at San Juan with interest and they know that we have full seasons», said the Minister of Tourism, noting that a fortnight ago they had been talking about the possibility of expanding the service.

Involución aviación rusa

AW | 2022 07 26 11:16 | AVIATION / AIRLINES

Russian aviation involution

Russia to recover another 11 planes from the graveyard

The planes of Russian airlines are mostly rented from the Western landlords, while the economic blockade exists, the planes could be confiscated, as there is a demand to hand them over after the Russian Federation Government disposed of the Western goods. Currently, airlines continue to seek to return their flights, the Russian industry is searching the plane graveyards to recover what is salvageable while manufacturers are working to deliver new domestic planes.

AW-Tupolev__Tu-204

Following the search, eleven aircraft were refurbished to be operated by Red Wings Airlines and the Volga-Dnepr and Aviastar-TU freighters. An Antonov An124 (1), two Ilyushin Il96s (2), and eight Tupolev Tu-204s (8). The restoration of these aircraft will cost more than US$ 250 million, which, in any case, is much lower than the price of an aircraft. The old Soviet-era aircraft will be refurbished, although their safety level is not determined. The companies that will take over the planes already have experience with these models, which will allow them to better manage them.

The intention of the Russian national authorities is to overcome in the best possible way the interim period until the thousand new aircraft that President Vladimir Putin has ordered from the factories and that will not be fully in use until 2030, are available. The new Sukhoi SSJ aircraft -100, models known in the West as in Mexico and Belgium. It is also expected that the Irkut MC-21 will finally be able to fly, but it will take more time to enter service. Even so, to reach a thousand aircraft announced, it will also be necessary to manufacture older models that do not require Western technology.
