Congo Airways uncertainty Embraer E2
African airline would switch to Airbus A220 fleet
Congo Airways currently has four (4) Embraer E2-Jets selected as part of a joint order. The statement from the Congolese airline is considering changing the Brazilian order in favor of the Airbus A220 family. Reports have suggested that the Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo-based airline, previously leasing first-generation Embraer E-Jets from carrier Kenya Airways, should have taken delivery of the aircraft in December 2021. Airspace Africa has reported that Congo Airways has four of the next-generation regional jets on order: two E190-E2s (2) and two E195-E2s (2). The E190-E2s have a 96-seat configuration.
The deliveries of the Brazilian aircraft are scheduled for this year 2022: the E190-E2 for April/May and the E195-E2 for November/December. The Congolese government has paid the first US$14 million dollars owed to Embraer for the plane. Despite this, your national airline may now be preparing to shelve the deal in favor of the Airbus A220. As of March 2022 Congo Airways had opted not to extend the leases of its leased E190s from Kenya Airways. These factors seem to suggest that Congo Airways is leaning its weight on the selection of the new European regional airliner. The airline would seek fleet uniformity, since the rest of the aircraft are made up of Airbus A320s.
Rumors could lead Congo Airways to replace Brazilian regional jets with A220s, but the airline would undoubtedly pay a high cost to modify the fleet in the proximity of deliveries of Brazilian Embraer E-Jets.

Korean 50th Anniversary The Americas
Korean Air celebrates its 50th anniversary serving the Americas
On April 19, 2022, Korean Air celebrates its 50th anniversary serving the Americas. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti presents a Mayoral Proclamation to Jin Ho Lee, Senior Vice President and Regional Headquarters Director for Korean Air Americas, at City Hall in Los Angeles on April 18, 2022.
In the historical setting, fifty years ago, a Korean Air Boeing 707 took off from Seoul/Gimpo Airport making stops in Tokyo and Honolulu before landing in Los Angeles, United States. Korean Air’s inaugural passenger flight from Seoul to Los Angeles marked the beginning of the central role the airline would play in fostering economic and cultural relations between South Korea and the United States.
Since launching its first transpacific route between the United States and South Korea, Korean Air has become one of the largest transpacific airlines. The airline started out serving just two cities in the United States: Honolulu and Los Angeles. It now flies from thirteen hotspots across North America with its headquarters in downtown Los Angeles/LAX. While the airline carried about 43,800 passengers between the United States and Seoul in 1972, it flew more than 3 million passengers between the United States and Korea in 2019. Flight time has also been reduced to 11 hours from 17 hours on its flight without scales. The airline initially used a 171-seat Boeing 707 on its first route to the United States, and now operates the Boeing 787 and Boeing 777 on routes to the Americas.
Over the past 50 years, Korean Air has greatly contributed to the US economy by fostering economic, social and cultural exchange between the two countries through its passenger and cargo network. Approximately 11,000 direct and indirect jobs have been created in related businesses in the thirteen cities served by the airline, adding around US$ 110 million per year in value added through the labor market and consumption. Before COVID, approximately 1.11 million Koreans traveled on Korean Air flights to the United States annually, and it is estimated that they spent around US$ 4 billion during their stay. Dedicated cargo terminals in Los Angeles and at New York’s John F. Kennedy/JFK International Airport support cargo operations for both Korean Air and other airlines, serving as hubs for both eastern and western New York. the United States. The airline is estimated to have created 100,000 jobs and generated an economic effect of US$ 17 billion in the last half century.
Korean Air Leadership
Since launching its first US route, Korean Air has grown into a major global airline serving 120 cities in 43 countries. The airline not only co-founded the SkyTeam Alliance with Delta Air Lines, Aeroméxico and Air France in 2000, but also launched a transpacific joint venture with Delta Air Lines in 2018, connecting customers with more than 290 cities in the United States and 80 points in Asia. Their transpacific joint venture is considered the most comprehensive in the industry. «As a proud joint venture partner, we want to congratulate Korean Air on the significant milestone of connecting the United States and Korea for half a century. We look forward to working together to seamlessly connect more customers between the Americas and Asia through our Incheon hub for years to come», said Matteo Curcio, Vice President of Asia Pacific for Delta Air Lines.
Korean Air continued to serve the United States during the pandemic, with the airline delivering thousands of tons of cargo, such as e-commerce products, semiconductor parts, medical supplies and covid test kits, fruits and vegetables, and items related to the K -pop. The airline also launched two new U.S. gateways, Rickenbacker International Airport (Columbus, Ohio) and Chicago Rockford International Airport (Rockford, Illinois), which have strengthened the airline’s transpacific cargo network and helped alleviate some of the US supply chain problems.

AirAsia X cancels A330NEO order
Airbus suffers A330NEO fleet cancellation
Malaysian airline AirAsia X has canceled most of its Airbus A330NEO orders. The cancellation of the order was anticipated in early 2020 and agreed in November 2021. For Airbus, no adjustments to line production are necessary. Following the global health crisis, the wide-body aircraft market industry is currently weak with medium-term projections for its recovery, significantly involving the Airbus A330NEO line directly.
AirAsia X has been one of the largest customers for the European builder’s Airbus A330NEO since its launch in 2014. In December 2014, the Malaysian low-cost carrier ordered 55 aircraft, and a year later, it added a further 11 orders to the backlog. which raised its share of the order book to almost 40%. In July 2018, Airbus and AirAsia X agreed to add a further 34 units to the order book, bringing orders to 100 units. However, in September 2012, after a review, only 12 aircraft were added, bringing the total number of A330NEOs AirAsia X had on order to 78 instead of 100. By then, AirAsia X’s participation in the A330NEO order book had already decreased to 33%. The order total represented one in three global orders destined for AirAsia X.
By 2017 AirAsia’s A330NEO orders were at risk. A review of the order was the possible difficulties for the sale and lease transactions of the aircraft because the lessors had started to accumulate orders for the aircraft and the possible limitations in the routes to Europe that AirAsia X observed a very dense configuration that pushed the aircraft near its limits. After the arrival of the pandemic in 2019 the difficulties would begin, while AirAsia X had been delighted by the launch of the Airbus A321XLR, which provides incremental capacity additions for long-haul destinations. When the pandemic started to hit the airline industry, AirAsia X’s order for the Airbus A330NEO was facing cancellation due to international travel cancellations. By November 2021, AirAsia X and Airbus agreed to reduce the Airbus A330NEO order to just fifteen units and twenty Airbus A321XLRs, which implies the cancellation of 63 Airbus A330NEOs and 10 Airbus A321XLRs. The order reduction of sixty-three (63) Airbus A330NEOs represents a value of US$7.3 billion, according to the TAF data analysis tool Airbus Cancellation Monitors and 10 Airbus A321XLRs valued at almost US$600 million.
As part of Air Asia X’s restructuring, its A330CEO fleet has now been reduced to just thirteen aircraft. Some fifteen aircraft remain on order to replace those thirteen aircraft and represent modest growth going forward. As a result of the cancellation, Airbus has lost 27% of its order book for the Airbus A330NEO. This is a significant loss for Airbus, but the reality is that Airbus has brought the program production rates in line with the new reality of the Airbus A330NEO programme. Although the cancellations are seen as negative, the cancellations mean that the quality of the backlog has improved substantially, but the future success of the Airbus A330NEO will largely depend on how Asian airlines, which have been the main customers of the Airbus A330CEO, could renew or upgrade your fleet in the short term.

EasyJet
Airlines eliminate mask requirements
European airline mask mandate
Many international airlines began waiving their mask requirements even before the United States. Following their country’s respective health and safety guidelines, several international airlines have made changes to their masking policies, allowing travelers to choose whether to wear one on certain flights.
In the United States, the masking requirement on public transportation, which encompasses buses, trains, airplanes, and transportation facilities, was struck down by a federal judge’s decision on April 18, 2022. Most airlines in the United States States for now will not require a mask, whether or not you will need to wear one on an international flight depends on their individual policies.
Across the world several airlines have altered their mask mandates thus far. Air transport users should consult their airline and respective governments about current health policies and requirements between different countries. Airlines often update their mask requirements based on local guidance at their origin and destination locations. It is best to always check with your individual airline before heading to the airport.
British Airways
The airline allows customers to fly without masks if the destination they are traveling to does not require them. «For destinations where we have established that the use of a face covering is not mandatory, you can make a personal choice, and we kindly request that everyone respect the preferences of others», the airline said in its guidance.
Norwegian
Mandatory face masks are not mandatory on flights across the Norwegian network, meaning passengers can choose whether to wear one on board. The airline notes that the use of face masks may still be required at various destinations and suggests checking policies before travelling.
Jet2 Airways
Jet2 was the first airline to drop its mask requirements. Travelers no longer have to wear face coverings at airports or domestic British airline flights. Travelers, regardless of vaccination status, will need to continue to wear masks leaving planes at destinations where they are required.
Virgin Atlantic Airways
The airline no longer requires face masks for passengers on routes where the destination and aircraft departure location do not require them locally, including the United States and the Caribbean. Other routes will still require face coverings, as the guidelines differ for each destination. This list is expected to expand as regulatory requirements for destinations change, according to the airline’s website. As of April 19, for the following routes operating to or from the UK, masks are still required for customers aged 12 and over until further notice: Delhi, Islamabad, Hong Kong, Johannesburg, Lahore, Lagos, Mumbai, Shanghai, Tel-Aviv.
Tui Airways
On flights to or from England, Wales or Northern Ireland, the British airline said wearing masks is no longer necessary, but recommends bringing them. Passengers 2 years and older must wear face coverings if traveling to the United States.
EasyJet
All flights between England, Northern Ireland, Jersey, Isle of Man, Denmark, Sweden, Gibraltar, Switzerland, Hungary, Iceland and Poland no longer require face coverings. Given the different policies for each destination, masks are required for all other flights.

Work on the MC-21 line is accelerated
Rostec companies seek domestic component replacements Western blockade generates changes in MC-21 and SSJ100 lines
Rostec State Corp. companies are accelerating work on import substitution units and components for the Irkut MC-21 airliner and have developed domestic communication equipment for the plane, said Oleg Yevtushenko, chief executive of Rostec. “The Polet company of the Ruselectronics holding has developed short-range and long-range communication equipment for the MC-21 aircraft. By the end of this year, 20 radio stations will be delivered to the customer. We also develop intercom equipment for MC-21. Equipment certification is due to be completed this September. In addition, we develop software for data transmission in civil aviation networks”, said the Rostec Press Office.
The acceleration of the incorporation of the component parts of the new line of MC-21 aircraft is due to the problems generated with the West and the current conflict over the war in Ukraine, which has generated a Western blockade.
Earlier, Yury Slyusar, Director General of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), said that the UAC planned to produce 36 MC-21 aircraft by 2025 and then expects to increase production rates to 72 aircraft per year. Demand for import-substituted Irkut MC-21s and Sukhoi SSJ 100s rose sharply amid sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union, including in particular a total ban on the supply of Airbus and Boeing aircraft and their parts to Russia. .
MC-21 is the first medium-range aircraft of the Russian Federation. The aircraft had its launch ceremony in June 2016 in Irkutsk. The maiden flight of the MC-21 equipped with American PW1400 engines was made on May 28, 2017. Its first flight with Russian PD-14 engines was made in December 2020.

Twenty years Dornier 728JET project
Fairchild-Dornier 728JET, twenty anniversaries of a truncated project
The Fairchild-Dornier consortium had reached a maturity in the development of new aircraft entering the new century. The German-American manufacturer had announced around March 2022 the birth of a new regional aircraft model called the Dornier Do-728JET, a twin-engine aircraft that would mark a change in philosophy and in the way of flying. Financial problems had caused the project to be abandoned.
Dornier had long been recognized as a manufacturer of robust and reliable aircraft, with the Do-228, Do-328 and Do-328JET models having considerable commercial success throughout the world. In the 1990s, the company was acquired by US-based Fairchild Aircraft and set out to create a new regional airliner, dubbed the Fairchild Dornier 728. However, the aircraft never found any customers.
In December 1999, Fairchild Aerospace Corporation was acquired by the German insurer Allianz A.G. and the American investment group Clayton, Dubilier & Rice Inc. for a value of US$ 1.2 billion. In 2003, Fairchild’s assets were purchased by M7 Aerospace and the new company relocated to San Antonio, Texas, USA.
Dornier Flugzeugwerke was a German aircraft manufacturer founded in Friedrichshafen in 1914 by Claude Dornier. Throughout its long lifespan, the company produced many designs for the civil and military markets. The German company Dornier entered the 1980s with financial difficulties. The German aircraft manufacturer had been successful with its Do 228 and Do 328 turboprop aircraft models designed in 1981 and 1991 respectively, leading to a purchase by Daimler-Benz (now Mercedes Benz). However, in 1996, the American firm Fairchild bought the eight-decade-old Dornier brand and came with big projects under its wings. After offering new variants of the Do 328 turboprop, Fairchild Dornier announced a massive change in 1997. The aircraft manufacturer launched the new line of regional jet aircraft, called the Do-728JET, as well as new Do-528JET and Do-928JET variants. , a whole family of regional jets that contemplabsa a capacity for between 50 to 110 passengers and would offer a strong fuel saving economy thanks to the new engines. The 728JET family had an interesting design, with flat wings and a bulky fuselage.
The airlines were very interested in a new regional aircraft, since there was a need in the world market to replace the fleet of regional aircraft. An order for sixty (60) aircraft aircraft plus sixty (60) options 60 had been announced shortly after the official launch, being the launch carrier of the model. The production began its process online, building three prototypes for testing and regulatory approvals.
Financial difficulties
Financial problems and difficulties were shaking the project for a new airliner. Fairchild began testing the 728JET in 2000, opting to build three at first for regulatory approval. However, with a cost price of nearly US$ 1 billion for 2001, the planemaker was desperately struggling to finance the project. The 728JET made its public debut on March 21, 2002, with a successful launch of the first prototype used to commemorate the occasion. However, Lufthansa Procurement Director Nico Buchholz said: «When we pressed the red button to reveal the aircraft, I knew it was basically an empty shell, unable to fly. For me, this launch was a sad event, as I was aware of what was about to happen».
Despite attempts to obtain investment from the German government and interested manufacturers, Fairchild was unable to seal a deal. Fairchild-Dornier formally declared bankruptcy in April 2002, thwarting the birth of a new 728JET product. The hopes of taking flight were cut short by financial difficulties and problems related to 9/11 in the United States and the impacts on commercial aviation, it was an inauspicious time for the launch of a large family of regional aircraft.

US airlines eliminate masks
US airlines eliminate mandatory mask use
US airlines have communicated that the use of masks on their flights would be optional as of Monday 04/18, after a judge declared the federal requirement to use them on public transport in the United States illegal. Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle of Tampa, Florida, ruled that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the main federal health agency, had exceeded its authority in imposing the requirement, which applies to airplanes, trains, subways and buses, among others. Several US airlines quickly announced that the mask would no longer be mandatory, at least on their internal flights.
Immediate effect
United Airlines specified that the change would take effect immediately on its internal flights in the United States and some international flights, according to the rules in force in the countries of arrival. «That means that our employees will no longer be required to wear masks or impose them on passengers, in most cases. They will be able to choose to wear one, since the CDC continues to strongly recommend wearing masks on public transportation», said a spokesperson for the group. American, which was among the first to impose the anticovid vaccine on its employees. American Airlines and Delta Air Lines made similar announcements. Masks «well-fitted protect the person wearing it, even if people around them don’t use it», Delta said. «The masks were like boarding passes for almost two years, it was impossible to fly without them», Alaska Airlines noted, before indicating that they are now optional, except on flights to or from Canada. This company also evoked in a statement the case of passengers banned because they refused to wear a mask.
The US civil aviation regulator, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) declared in January 2021 a zero tolerance policy towards passengers who refused to wear masks. Flight crews faced verbal or physical abuse from people who refused to wear them.
Southwest Airlines noted that the air on board its planes is constantly renewed with ventilation systems that filter «99.97% of the particles in the air».
The Joe Biden Administration has recently been under pressure from those who ask to relax or cancel the obligation to wear a mask. Some 20 Republican-led states and several airlines have called for an end to the measure on airplanes and other public transportation. But last week, federal authorities decided to extend the mask requirement until at least May 3 due to a surge in cases.
The White House finds the judge’s ruling disappointing, spokeswoman Jen Psaki said, noting that «the CDC continues to recommend wearing a mask in public transit». According to a senior presidential official, this decision «means that the CDC order to wear a mask on public transportation is not in force at this time». The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will therefore not enforce the obligation, he specified on condition of anonymity.

Interjet denounces former directors
Interjet will file complaints against former airline directors
Carlos Del Valle, Deputy President of Interjet, announced that he will file complaints against former executives of the airline for embezzlement in Colombia. “We will present some complaints here, in Colombia, about officials who worked at Interjet in past administrations that, obviously, there was some embezzlement. We will file those complaints”, he said through a video on his social networks. Alejandro Del Valle’s son shared that he is also on a tour of Colombia to hold talks with airline managers in search of fixing the situation of past Interjet administrations. “As everyone knows, we will start only with domestic flights right now, we will make a tour to be able to talk with airline directors and try to fix all the mess that has occurred in past administrations. We will take a tourist tour, taking advantage of these holidays, have excellent parties friends. Greetings from Colombia, I send you a hug”, said Alejandro del Valle (h).
Interjet promised to be one of the first airlines that had flights from the Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA), this despite the fact that the company has been on strike for a year, as announced by Carlos Del Valle. In his February 2022 message, he pointed out that, in the company of Federico Bertrand, General Director of the company, they delivered the documents required to take off their first plane from the Felipe Ángeles airport in the coming months. Since December 2020 without operating and facing a strike. In August 2020, Interpol issued a red card for the capture of Alemán Magnani, accused of tax fraud for 66 million pesos by the Attorney General’s Office.
Carlos del Valle has reported in recent months that Interjet’s plan is to restart the operation of the airline, which was one of the four main airlines in Mexico, this 2022. The manager has proposed initially operating with only 10 aircraft and flights from three airports: Mexico City International Airport (AICM), Toluca in the State of Mexico and the new Felipe Ángeles.

Avianca-SKY merger perspectives
SKY and Avianca start dialogue on merger
The airlines Avianca Airlines and SKY Airline continue to talk about a possible synergy between both airlines. SKY Airline Chairman Holger Paulmann continues to contemplate a merger with Colombian airline Avianca. Companies are working and talking about it. Holger Paulmann believes that it makes sense for two companies with a similar business model to merge. “We do not rule it out. There could be shared benefits and the union between partners that have the same or similar business model makes sense. We are working and discussing commercial issues with Avianca», said Holger Paulmann.
This merger would be possible due to the bond that SKY Airline has put up for sale for a value of US$ 100 million to the same investment funds that entered Avianca, the new owners of the Colombian airline. For its part, the sale of the SKY bond has the option of becoming 40% of the company’s shares. Avianca left Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Law, while the Chilean Government lifted the control measures and has resumed the course of interest in the merger of both airlines. The possible synergy agreement could be approved in 2022. The new owners of Avianca invested in the airline SKY Airline by converting a bond for US$ 100 million. With this negotiation, the two airlines would begin a joint effort. The investors of Avianca and SKY are the funds Caoba Capital, Elliott Management, who injected capital in the Colombian for the exit of Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Law.
By converting this bond into shares for SKY Airline, the investors become owners of 40% of the airline, that is, they will be partners of the Chilean-German Paulmann-Mast family. According to Holger Paulmann, President of SKY Airline, in 2021 it announced an ambitious project to enter the US market with the acquisition of ten Airbus A320NEO aircraft, which would allow it to make non-stop flights to North America.
