Tripulación Cabina asocia a sindicato AFA-CWA
La Tripulación de Cabina de la aerolínea estadounidense Avelo Airlines se une a la Asociación de Auxiliares de Vuelo de la AFA-CWA. Seis meses después de la presentación inicial para la elección, los asistentes de vuelo de la aerolínea han confirmado que estarán representados por esta asociación.

Como parte de AFA, tienen expertos para trabajar con ellos a través del proceso de negociación colectiva y toda la fuerza de nuestro sindicato de auxiliares de vuelo detrás de ellos en cada paso del camino”.
A pesar de que la aerolínea tiene menos de un año de antigüedad, según los informes, ha estado plagada de una alta rotación de personal. Los asistentes de vuelo solicitaron por primera vez el reconocimiento ante la Junta Nacional de Mediación (NMB) en Octubre de 2021, aunque las disputas legislativas y legales retrasaron las elecciones. Avelo Airlines, representada por la firma legal antisindical Jones Day, se ha visto envuelta en una batalla legal contra la NMB. La aerolínea acusó a la junta de violar la Ley Laboral Federal al impedir que los nuevos empleados voten en las elecciones, citando la Ley de Trabajo Ferroviario. De acuerdo con la Ley 360, la NMB evitó el requisito de la ley de que un sindicato que busca representación debe tener el interés de al menos el 50% de los trabajadores para que la elección continúe. Según los informes, la fecha límite de votación de la NMB prohibió que el 70% de los asistentes de vuelo votaran.
More Perfect Union ha informado que el CEO de Avelo Airlines, Andrew Levy, ha prometido que la aerolínea continuará su lucha contra el sindicato a pesar de la votación. Escribiendo en una declaración al personal el Miércoles 13/04, Andrew Levy dijo: “Tenga la seguridad de que Avelo seguirá adelante con la demanda que nuestra compañía presentó previamente en un Tribunal Federal que impugna la legitimidad de la elección”.
AFA ha afirmado que la batalla legal es una táctica de demora y ha expresado su deseo de dejar de lado la animosidad y trabajar en colaboración con la gerencia para resolver los problemas. Sara Nelson agregó: “Los auxiliares de vuelo de Avelo mostraron un coraje y una solidaridad increíbles frente a una agresiva campaña antisindical. AFA es el principal sindicato de auxiliares de vuelo en los Estados Unidos, que representa a más de 45.000 trabajadores en múltiples aerolíneas. El sindicato ha apoyado en particular las batallas por las máscaras faciales obligatorias, la puesta a tierra de los pasajeros agresivos y la mejora de las condiciones de trabajo. Al mismo tiempo, el sindicato ha apoyado una serie de piquetes realizados por asistentes de vuelo de Spirit Airlines por incumplimientos en el contrato. Los empleados han alegado que los frecuentes “colapsos operativos” han dejado a los empleados varados en ciudades de todo Estados Unidos.

The Cabin Crew of the American airline Avelo Airlines joins the Association of Flight Attendants of the AFA-CWA. Six months after the initial filing for election, the airline’s flight attendants have confirmed that they will be represented by this association.
Workers have alleged that Avelo waged an aggressive anti-union campaign to delay the vote as workers fought to improve conditions at the newly created airline. Despite the airline launching in 2021, it has reportedly struggled to retain staff members despite its rapid growth. In a statement, AFA-CWA President Sara Nelson said: “Avelo flight attendants sent a message to their management and anyone thinking of starting an airline: we want respect and fairness from the start. Avelo flight attendants The flight attendants will choose representatives from within their ranks and go deeper into the work of preparing for contract negotiations based on the priorities set by all Avelo flight attendants As part of AFA, they have experts to work with them through the collective bargaining process and the full force of our flight attendant union behind them every step of the way”.
Even though the airline is less than a year old, it has reportedly been plagued by high staff turnover. Flight attendants first applied for recognition with the National Mediation Board (NMB) in October 2021, although legislative and legal wrangling delayed the election. Avelo Airlines, represented by the anti-union law firm Jones Day, has been embroiled in a legal battle against the NMB. The airline accused the board of violating Federal Labor Law by preventing new employees from voting in elections, citing the Railroad Labor Law. In accordance with Law 360, the NMB avoided the law’s requirement that a union seeking representation must have the interest of at least 50% of the workers for the election to proceed. The NMB’s voting deadline reportedly barred 70% of flight attendants from voting.
More Perfect Union has reported that Avelo Airlines CEO Andrew Levy has promised that the airline will continue its fight against the union despite the vote. Writing in a statement to staff on Wednesday 4/13, Andrew Levy said: “Rest assured Avelo will move forward with the lawsuit our company previously filed in Federal Court challenging the legitimacy of the election”.
AFA has claimed that the legal battle is a delaying tactic and has expressed a desire to put animosity aside and work collaboratively with management to resolve the issues. Sara Nelson added, “Avelo flight attendants showed incredible courage and solidarity in the face of an aggressive anti-union campaign. Now, it’s time for Avelo management to stop wasting time and money fighting their workers, and work with them.” to ensure a contract that respects workers and strengthens the airline. Our entire family of flight attendants supports the Avelo AFA crew to help them secure the rights, protections and benefits they deserve”.
AFA is the largest union for flight attendants in the United States, representing more than 45,000 workers on multiple airlines. The union has been particularly supportive of battles for mandatory face masks, grounding aggressive passengers and improving working conditions. At the same time, the union has supported a series of picketing by Spirit Airlines flight attendants for contract breaches. Employees have alleged that frequent “operational meltdowns” have left employees stranded in cities across the United States.
