Incursionará mercado bursátil Estados Unidos
La empresa matriz de AirAsia, Capital A Group de Tony Fernandes está planeando el ingreso al mercado bursátil en Nueva York, Estados Unidos. “Si quieres ser actor, probablemente querrás terminar en Hollywood en algún momento de tu carrera. Capital A Group, previously named AirAsia Group Berhad, had begun compliance work and envisioned two separate listings, one for AirAsia to list in 2023. The company, which previously considered merging its digital businesses with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC ), went into the red during the pandemic, leading the EY auditing firm in July 2020 to question its ability to survive. Tony Fernandes said that problem has now been overcome. Capital A Group has been aggressively building its digital businesses and super apps over the past two years as most of its planes were grounded due to travel restrictions to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. The group has hoped to build its super app, modeling regional tech giants like Grab and Gojek’s super apps that offer a variety of services including transportation, food delivery and payment services.
Capital A Group remains under Practice Note 17 (PN17) on the Malaysian Stock Exchange, a listing for groups in financial distress. Tony Fernandes, who is the company’s chief executive, insisted that “it was a solvable accounting problem, which does not reflect the fundamentals of the company”, he told the Financial Times.
AirAsia has a fleet of 212 units of which 85 of the 212 are active, with load factors of 80 to 90 percent, while they project to have an updated fleet of 176 aircraft back in the skies in December 2022. “I think in the third and fourth quarter, we would be EBITDA positive, including leasing. I’m pretty confident that 2023 will be profitable and definitely cash flow positive”, said Tony Fernandes.
Capital A Group’s first quarter loss widened to MYR 903.79 million/US$ 204.67 million from MYR 767.42 million a year ago. Revenue rose 152.78 percent year on year to MYR 811.78 million.
Commenting on the listing plans, Tony Fernandes cited his success in transforming from Warner Music executive to low-budget aviation pioneer after buying AirAsia from the Malaysian government in 2001 for less than US$ 1 would eventually sway investors.
“Twenty years ago, when I started this airline, no investor wanted to invest in us. Gojek will own 4.76 percent of super app airasia after the acquisition, the companies announced at the time.
