Air Tahiti signs ATR 42-600S order for islands with short runways

Air Tahiti, a French Polynesian national airline that operates turboprop aircraft, has confirmed an order for two ATR 42-600S aircraft and an additional ATR 72-600. ATR Aircraft confirmed the firm orders in a statement that also highlights that the ATR 42-600S, the new short take-off and landing (STOL) variant of the ATR 42-600, is expected to be certified in time for first deliveries in late of 2024.

He says there are 1,000 airports, including some in French Polynesia, that are between 800 and 1,000 meters; the market segment specifically targeted by the new STOL variant. The standard ATR 42 requires a runway length of around 1,100m.

Aircraft manufacturer ATR Aircraft said: «ATR 42-600S will allow access to destinations with short runways, such as Maupiti Island, using 100% of the aircraft’s cargo capacity».

Air Tahiti’s booking engine shows that it is operating scheduled flights from the capital Papeete to Maupiti Island using a standard ATR 42-600. The island has a 956 m long (3,136 ft) runway.

ATR says that Air Tahiti currently operates ten ATR aircraft and was a launch customer for the ATR 42-600S when the program was launched in June 2019 at the Paris Air Show. But now Air Tahiti has signed a firm order.

Air Tahiti will begin wet leasing a 19-seat De Havilland Aircraft of Canada DHC 6-300 Twin Otter so it can launch scheduled services in mid-November 2022 connecting Papette to the French Polynesian islands of Ua Pou and Ua Huka. It plans to replace the Twin Otter on the routes in 2026 with ATR 42-600S aircraft once the 830m-long runway at Ua Pou and the 755m-long runway at Ua Huka have been lengthened.

The airline also said it has an ATR 72-600 on order that was originally due for delivery in 2020, but will now be delivered in May 2023.

Eurowings strike

Eurowings strike will affect thousands of passengers

AW-Eurowings__Tail

A planned strike at Lufthansa Group’s Eurowings Europe GmbH is expected to affect some 20,000 passengers on Monday 10/17, as the airline’s pilots’ union called a strike during working hours, Eurowings said. The Vereinigung Cockpit Union, said negotiations with Eurowings to reach an agreement on working hours have failed, and on Friday called a strike from October 17-19, 2022.

The union said that its main requests to the company are a limitation of maximum flight times, as well as an increase in rest time for cabin crew.

The airline Eurowings said in a statement that more than half of its flights were able to take place on Monday, and that customers will largely be relocated to alternative connections. By Tuesday and Wednesday, the airline said it also expects to be able to operate more than half of its planned flights.

The union said on Friday 10/14 that it is open to dialogue with the company, but described Eurowings’ offers to the pilots as completely insufficient. Eurowings said in a statement that the aid package it offered, which includes 10 extra days off per year and three hours less working time per week, is at the limit of what is financially feasible.

Satélite HotBird a Centro Kennedy

AW | 2022 10 17 11:01 | AEROSPACE

Airbus entrega satélite Centro Espacial Kennedy

Airbus_Logo Defence&Space

Airbus HotBird Satellite to Kennedy Center

Airbus delivers satellite Kennedy Space Center

An Airbus A300-600ST Beluga spacecraft landed at the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral in Florida, United States, this weekend to deliver the HOTBIRD 13G Satellite built by Airbus for Eutelsat. This happened a few hours after its twin, HOTBIRD 13F, was successfully launched by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

The spacecraft are the first members of Airbus’ new «Eurostar Neo» family of telecommunications satellites, based on a next-generation platform and technologies developed with the support of the European Space Agency (ESA) and others, including the Center National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES) and the United Kingdom Space Agency (UKSA). This milestone also marks the first time since 2009 that the Beluga has visited the United States, when it was carrying the European «Tranquility» module of the International Space Station. For this latest mission, the Beluga used 30% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for its departure flight from Toulouse, reflecting Airbus’ decarbonisation ambitions.

“It is a true honor to display two satellites back to back for our client Eutelsat – two pieces of European technology at the iconic Kennedy Space Center. Airbus’ ability to implement an autonomous European solution is underlined by the transport of our satellites on the unique Beluga aircraft, a true example of pan-Airbus synergies!”, said Jean-Marc Nasr, Head of Space Systems at Airbus.

Once they reach their orbital position, these two satellites, with more efficient power and thermal control systems than their predecessors, will be able to transmit more than 1,000 television channels in Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. They will also enhance Eutelsat’s ability to provide connectivity to more than 135 million people, as they replace three Eutelsat satellites currently in orbit.

With the arrival of the new BelugaXL, based on the larger A330-200 platform, the existing BelugaST fleet is progressively available for large cargo services worldwide. Since the launch of the new Airbus Beluga Transport service in January, BelugaST has flown missions for various clients around the world.

SmartLynx will incorporate A321 Freighter

SmartLynx Airlines plans to add 20 A321Fs in 2023

AW-Smartlynx Airlines__Isologotype

Latvia-based SmartLynx Airlines, a global ACMI cargo and charter operator, has announced the addition of four additional Airbus A321P2F (4) to its growing cargo fleet to ensure flights in Europe, Asia, Africa and South America. . The additional freighters will bring the SmartLynx fleet to a total of fifteen (15) active freighters of this type by the first half of 2023, with a plan to expand to twenty (20). The four A321Fs MSN941, MSN961, MSN1185 and MSN1241 are part of a sale-leaseback agreement with Aero Capital Solutions, Inc. (ACS) and will be registered in Malta after conversion. Passenger to Freighter (P2F) conversions are handled by Precision Aircraft Solutions (Precision) and Elbe Flugzeugwerke (EFW).

«I can admit there were doubts at first as to whether this was the right move for SmartLynx, but from today’s perspective taking that risk and diversifying our business portfolio with cargo operations has proven to be the right choice. In addition to taking advantage of a market that has grown over the pandemic, the addition of the cargo business helps offset the seasonal problems ACMI operators often face», says SmartLynx Airlines CEO Žygimantas Surintas.

The expansion is one of the key components of SmartLynx’s strategic plans to become the largest operator of A321F freighters in the near future. The A321F offers many advantages, having the highest payload and the most versatile and customer-friendly features in the cargo market today. Additionally, the A321F is the most fuel-efficient narrow-body cargo aircraft available, and the choice of this aircraft type underscores SmartLynx’s commitment to more sustainable air travel.

«The new Airbus A321F freighters have helped us reduce flight operating costs by up to 15% and ensure up to 20% lower fuel consumption compared to other aircraft in the class, making the company very competitive in complex air cargo market. Due to their efficiency, these aircraft are used by international logistics companies such as DHL, which is also our first cargo customer. The A321Fs are the first narrow-body freighters to offer a lower cargo deck in containers to reduce total shipping costs, and that is why they are currently in high demand on the market», Žygimantas Surintas continues.

SmartLynx will continue to be focused on passenger operations, but the company’s cargo volumes are expected to grow from 10% to around 40% in the next two to three years. In the coming years, the airline plans to operate up to twenty aircraft of this type. Žygimantas Surintas adds that SmartLynx is very happy to cooperate with all parties involved and appreciates their expertise and commitment.

SmartLynx iekļaus A321 Freighter

SmartLynx Airlines plāno pievienot 20 A321F 2023. gadā

AW-Smartlynx Airlines__Isologotype-001

Flydubai wetlease Boeing 737 from Smartwings

Airlines work together according to demand

The Dubai-based airline Flydubai has revealed on Friday 10/14 that it intends to lease four Boeing 737-800 from the Czech airline Smartwings. The lease will run for two months from mid-November 2022, suggesting the aircraft will be used for increased capacity during the 2022 FIFA World Cup and festive season.

The Boeing 737-800 wet lease agreement will begin on November 17, 2022, just three days before the 2022 World Cup kicks off in Doha, Qatar. The agreement will end on January 16, 2023, after the return of vacationers who have traveled abroad during the holiday period. The Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance and Insurance (ACMI) contract involves four Next Generation Boeing 737-800s joining Flydubai’s fleet of 68 aircraft. Configured in an Economy class environment, the aircraft will be deployed to select destinations including Chattogram, Colombo, Dhaka, Karachi, Multan, Muscat and Sialkot. While most of these cities are not primarily World Cup markets or holiday parties, the additional aircraft will help free up capacity across the fleet. In particular, Flydubai will offer daily return transfers from Dubai World Central (DWC) to Doha to transport football enthusiasts on match days during the 2022 World Cup.

Years of blockade aside, the Doha-Dubai route has long been a lucrative operation. During the upcoming tournament, there will be up to 48 daily flights between the two destinations, operated by Qatar Airways and Flydubai. Impressively, Flydubai will represent up to 33 daily flights. With an extensive route map across the Middle East, Europe, East Africa and South Asia, there are plenty of opportunities for the low-cost carrier this winter in the Arabian region.
