Avión derrapa pista terminando en Lago Victoria, Tanzania

La aerolínea regional de Tanzania, Precision Air, ha tenido un accidente aéreo de un Avions de Transport Regional ATR 42-500, registro 5H-PWF realizando el vuelo PW-494 de Dar es Salaam a Bukoba en Tanzania. El vuelo estaba compuesto con 39 pasajeros y 4 tripulantes, se aproximaba a la Pista 13 de Bukoba aproximadamente a las 08:53L (05:53Z). El avión sobrepasó la Pista 13 de Bukoba y se detuvo sumergido en el lago Victoria a unos 100 metros/330 pies más allá del final de la pista con la nariz del avión apuntando lejos de la orilla. El avión está sumergido en un 80%. Del accidente se confirmaron 24 supervivientes y 19 víctimas mortales, dos de ellas la tripulación de cabina.

La aerolínea confirmó que alrededor de las 10:40Z, el vuelo PW-494 de registro de aeronaves 5H-PWF estuvo involucrado en un accidente cuando se acercaba al aeropuerto de Bukoba y se estrelló en el lago Victoria. Los trabajos de rescate están en curso. La policía local informó que el avión se estrelló en las aguas del Lago Victoria a unos 100 metros del aeropuerto debido al mal tiempo.

En una conferencia de prensa a las 12:00Z, las autoridades locales informaron que han recuperado tres cuerpos de la aeronave, mientras continúan buscando al resto de los pasajeros. Por la tarde, el Primer Ministro de Tanzania, ha visitado el lugar del accidente.

Los sobrevivientes informaron que el avión se había acercado a Bukoba bajo una fuerte lluvia, la aproximación fue turbulenta. La tripulación abortó la aproximación y retrocedió, luego anunciaron que intentarían otra aproximación y si eso fallaba nuevamente, tendrían que regresar a Dar es Salaam. El avión estaba en la aproximación final nuevamente cuando de repente se encontraron en el agua, la cabina se llenó rápidamente de agua, una azafata abrió la salida de emergencia en la parte trasera donde pudieron salir del avión y después de un tiempo fueron recogidos por barcos de pescadores.

De acuerdo con las cartas recientes de la Civil Aviation Administration of Tanzania, no hay aproximaciones instrumentales publicadas para Bukoba, tampoco hay ayudas a la navegación terrestres (NDB, VOR, DME) en el aeródromo (el próximo NDB y VOR/DME están en Mwanza).

The regional airline of Tanzania, Precision Air, has had a plane crash involving an Avions de Transport Regional ATR 42-500, registration 5H-PWF on flight PW-494 from Dar es Salaam to Bukoba in Tanzania. The flight was made up of 39 passengers and 4 crew, approaching Runway 13 in Bukoba at approximately 08:53L (05:53Z). The plane overshot Bukoba Runway 13 and came to rest submerged in Lake Victoria about 100 metres/330 feet beyond the end of the runway with the nose of the plane pointing away from shore. The plane is 80% submerged. The accident confirmed 24 survivors and 19 fatalities, two of them cabin crew.

The airline confirmed that at around 10:40Z, aircraft registration flight PW-494 5H-PWF was involved in an accident on approach to Bukoba airport and crashed into Lake Victoria. Rescue work is ongoing. Local police reported that the plane crashed into the waters of Lake Victoria about 100 meters from the airport due to bad weather.

In a press conference at 12:00Z, local authorities reported that they have recovered three bodies from the aircraft, while they continue to search for the rest of the passengers. In the afternoon, the Prime Minister of Tanzania has visited the site of the accident.

Survivors reported that the aircraft had approached Bukoba in heavy rain, the approach was turbulent. The crew aborted the approach and backed off, then announced that they would try another approach and if that failed again they would have to return to Dar es Salaam. The plane was on final approach again when suddenly they found themselves in the water, the cabin quickly filled with water, a stewardess opened the emergency exit at the rear where they were able to get out of the plane and after a while they were picked up by boats of fishermen.

According to recent charts from the Civil Aviation Administration of Tanzania, there are no published instrument approaches for Bukoba, nor are there any ground navigation aids (NDB, VOR, DME) at the airfield (next NDB and VOR/DME are at Mwanza).
