Qantas es multada por infringir normas en rutas domésticas de Estados Unidos

El Departamento de Transporte de Estados Unidos (DOT) ha impuesto una multa a la aerolínea australiana Qantas Airways de hasta U$S 125.000 por infringir las normas que rigen qué pasajeros pueden volar en su ruta Nueva York a Los Ángeles.

Qantas tiene derecho a volar entre Nueva York y Los Ángeles con una frecuencia diaria, pero solo puede transportar una cuota reducida de pasajeros. El vuelo diario del Boeing 747-400 de Qantas se encuentra entre los más inusuales en los Estados Unidos. Los viajeros pueden abordar en Nueva York y trasladarse en Los Ángeles a otros vuelos de Qantas a Sydney, Melbourne y Brisbane. The Department of Transportation of the United States (DOT) has imposed a fine on the Australian airline Qantas Airways of up to US $ 125,000 for infringing the rules that govern which passengers can fly on their route from New York to Los Angeles.

In a second instance, passengers from New York could fly Qantas to Los Angeles and then change to an American Airlines flight to Auckland, New Zealand.

Qantas maintains that he did nothing wrong. It makes a code shared with American and Air Tahiti Nui, and in both cases, customers bought Qantas flight numbers for all stages. Indeed, the passengers were flying Qantas for all their itineraries. But the DOT ruled that the codes shared were different. «By keeping flights and transporting revenue passengers between two points within the United States and then placing those passengers on flights operated by other carriers for their subsequent transfer to foreign destinations, Qantas became involved in unauthorized cabotage», he said in his decision.

Interestingly, DOT sometimes gives carriers exemptions from cabotage laws, often for little-known reasons. For example, Samoa Airways, based in Samoa, an independent country, has temporary permission to transport passengers between Pago Pago and the Manu’a Islands, both in American Samoa, a nearby US territory. No airline with the US flag wants to fly the route. A group of American lawyers has repeatedly requested and received exemptions for the airline in recent years, arguing that it «prevents severe difficulties for residents of American Samoa, who would otherwise be forced to travel between the islands by boat».

As for Qantas, it hopes to continue flying between New York and Los Angeles for the foreseeable future. However, from September 2018 will change from airplane model of the Boeing 747 to the Boeing 787-9, smaller and more efficient.
