Los Emiratos Árabes Unidos, Bahréin, Egipto, Yemen y Arabia Saudita, entre otros, rompieron relaciones diplomáticas con Qatar, que deberá retirar a sus embajadores, y habían anunciado la cancelación de vuelos y el cierre de sus espacios aéreos y marítimos, aislando política y económicamente a la monarquía sunita. La medida entrará en rigor el martes, pero sus efectos ya se sienten.
La mayor parte del comercio de Qatar llega a través de rutas, puertos y aeropuertos en los países del Golfo, por lo que el reino deberá ahora utilizar vías por sobre Irak e Irán para llegar a Europa, Medio Oriente y otros puntos del globo, según destacó la cadena estadounidense ABC.
La decisión está basada en acusaciones de apoyo a grupos terroristas, especialmente la organización de los Hermanos Musulmanes, por parte de Doha, así como de diferencias sobre la conducción de las acciones en Yemen, donde una coalición liderada por Arabia Saudita asiste al gobierno de Al Hadi en la guerra civil contra los rebeldes hutíes, y la relación con Irán.
«Qatar alberga una multitud de terroristas y grupos sectarios que apuntan a crear inestabilidad en la región», argumenta un comunicado publicado por Riad que justifica el quiebre dentro del Consejo de Cooperación del Golfo (CCG) del que los países son miembros, según reporta la CNN.
