China Airlines de Taiwán ha seleccionado el Boeing 787-9 como parte de las actualización y modernización de flota reemplazando a los Airbus A330-300. Taiwan’s China Airlines has selected the Boeing 787-9 as part of its fleet upgrade and modernization replacing the Airbus A330-300. The airline has placed a firm order for sixteen (16) Boeing 787-9s plus eight (8) options, the company said on August 30, 2022 in its announcement at a Stock Exchange filing. Deliveries of the Boeing 787-9 will begin in 2025, but China Airlines has the option of converting its order to the larger aircraft, the Boeing 787-10. The airline has selected the General Electric GEnx powerplant to power the new widebodies aircraft.
The Taiwanese airline has been investing in its fleet for the past six years. It took delivery of its first of fourteen Airbus A350-900s (14) in September 2016, taking delivery of the last in October 2018. Between November 2021 and June 2022, it incorporated eight A321NEOs under lease from Air Lease Corporation (ALC). Four more will follow, while the airline has eleven A321NEOs (11) on direct order from the 2019 Paris Air Show. These will replace the airline’s Boeing 737-800s, of which six of the original sixteen are currently in service. . China Airlines also operates eleven Boeing 747-400F (11), ten 777-300ER (10) and four 777F (4), while maintaining an order for six Boeing 777F (6) in the pipeline.
The twenty-two Airbus A330-300 (22), of which four have been parked, have an average age of 14.5 years, but the oldest have been in service since mid-2004. China Airlines has been looking for some time for a suitable replacement. While Airbus has been successful in securing deals for the A350 and A321NEO (through ALC), Boeing is now the preferred aircraft manufacturer for medium-haul fleet replacement. The order is valued at US$4.6 billion at list prices.
It is unclear to what extent the decision has been influenced by political motives. The relationship between the United States and Taiwan has always been strong, but it was enhanced when House Speaker Nancy Pelosi paid a highly controversial visit to the country that China considers one of its republics. The visit caused political and military tensions as Beijing ordered its troops to conduct extensive training exercises in close proximity to Taiwan.
In the latest financial information on its investor’s website, China Airlines says it carried 296,100 passengers in the first seven months of 2022, up from 117,000 in the same period last year. Operating income increased to NT$82 million Taiwan Dollars from NT$63.7 million Taiwan Dollars, of which NT$74.2 million Taiwan Dollars came from cargo. This reflects the still difficult situation in the region, which has faced lengthy travel restrictions due to the global health crisis.
