La línea de mantenimiento Mexicana MRO modificará primer avión de 
pasajeros a carga en la región
El Centro de Mantenimiento Mexicana MRO llevará a cabo la primera conversión en Latinoamérica de tres aviones de pasajeros modelo Boeing 767-300 a versión carguero. Esta aeronave será destinada a la aerolínea Kalitta Air, de Japón.
La firma de un convenio está realizada con Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). El director del centro, Marcos Robles Gómez, expresó: “Mexicana MRO e IAI no invirtieron sólo para tres aviones, sino que es un tema de largo plazo. Este proyecto ayuda a ampliar el portafolio de servicios y a desarrollar más tecnología. Nos posiciona como una compañía que se está adaptando a necesidades externas”. El inicio del proyecto se llevarán a cabo en un periodo de cuatro meses por cada avión, donde trabajarán 150 personas para concluir la primera aeronave en octubre de 2017.
El vicepresidente ejecutivo y director general de IAI, Yosef Melamed, precisó que con las modificaciones, el avión podrá transportar de entre 50 a 60 toneladas de carga. Dichos servicios, indicó, podrán ofrecerse a través de la empresa que encabeza a otras compañías aéreas que así lo soliciten, sin embargo, primero se enfocarán en el proyecto de Kalitta Air. Para llevar a cabo las modificaciones, se capacitaron a 30 ingenieros y técnicos mexicanos, mientras que la colaboración por parte de Israel serán 15 expertos en la materia, los cuales estarán de manera permanente en las instalaciones de Mexicana MRO.
El embajador de Israel en México, Jonathan Peled, comentó que la relación entre los países en temas aeronáuticos se acentúa con dicho proyecto. “Es la primera vez que una empresa en América Latina empieza un proceso de conversión de aviones con tecnología y conocimiento israelí y para nosotros es el eje de la cooperación con México. Traer la tecnología israelí y juntarla con el talento mexicano y poder manufacturero que tienen”, abundó. Añadió que el inicio de la cooperación es “la primera semilla para algo más grande en un futuro”, lo cual podría terminar en la instalación de una planta para realizar dichos servicios por la mano de obra con la que cuenta el país, así como por su cercanía con Estados Unidos y Canadá.
El centro de mantenimiento Mexinana MRO se encuentra financieramente estable, sin embargo, la venta del mismo se llevará a cabo en cualquier momento, precisó Robles Gómez. En la actualidad, Mexicana MRO da servicios a las aerolíneas Volaris, Interjet y VivaAerobus, Policía Federal, Presidencia de la República y la Fuerza Aérea, que en conjunto abarcan 30% de los clientes, mientras que el resto es para empresas internacionales. En 2016 llevaron a cabo diversos trabajos para 96 aviones, aunque para este año esperan aumentar dicha cifra con la introducción de los cargueros.
