Las primeras vacas lecheras aterrizan en el emirato de Qatar

Qatar va a importar 4.000 reses para acabar con la escasez de leche fresca debido al bloqueo decretado pos sus vecinos

Hace cinco semanas una de las primeras consecuencias del inesperado bloqueo a Qatar fue la falta de leche fresca en los estantes de los supermercados del emirato. Era uno de los productos que llegaba a diario por tierra desde Arabia Saudí, cuya frontera permanece cerrada. Para acabar con la escasez y la dependencia de sus vecinos saudíes, un empresario qatarí expuso la idea de capear la crisis de importar vacas. «El objetivo es compensar el corte que hemos sufrido de leche fresca, un alimento que tiene una caducidad muy rápida y que es imposible traer por vía aérea», señala Mazen Alsbeti, director de relaciones públicas de Power International, el conglomerado qatarí al que pertenece la empresa láctea Baladna.

La empresa láctea ha importado el primer lote de 165 vacas Holstein, una raza autóctona de Alemania caracterizada por su elevada producción de leche y su capacidad para adaptarse a nuevos entornos. Las reses aterrizaron la semana pasada en la capital del emirato a bordo de un avión de carga de la aerolínea estatal Qatar Airways procedente de Budapest, Hundría y fueron trasladadas en camiones a las instalaciones de la compañía. «La previsión es que sigan llegando nuevas remesas con un intervalo de entre tres y cuatro días. En total vamos a importar 4.000 vacas», detalla el portavoz de la firma. Australia, Estados Unidos o los Países Bajos serán los lugares de origen de los próximos rumiantes.

Con el bloqueo decretado por Arabia Saudí, Emiratos Árabes Unidos, Bahréin y Egipto sin visos de solución, las nuevas inquilinas comenzarán de inmediato a producir leche para Qatar. «Calculamos que, cuando estén todas en Qatar, seremos capaces de sacar al mercado diariamente unos 100.000 litros, lo que supone entre el 30% y el 35% de la demanda local», precisa Alsbeti.
