Southwest Airlines recibirá su primer Boeing 737-8 MAX en agosto 2017

La aerolínea low-cost Southwest Airlines se prepara para la ceremonia de entrega del más nuevo avión Boeing 737-8 MAX. Southwest con sede en Dallas, Texas, adquirirá 10 Boeing 737-8 MAX adicionales, dijo la directora financiera Tammy Romo en la segunda convocatoria de ganancias del segundo trimestre de Southwest.

Southwest Airlines, fue el cliente de lanzamiento del Boeing 737 MAX, aunque la primer compañía en tomar entrega y efectuar el primer vuelo comercial fue Batik Airlines de Indonesia.

Southwest Airlines tiene pedidos por 30 Boeing 737-7 MAX y 170 Boeing 737-8 MAX. De esta manera irá sustituyendo la flota de los más viejos Boeing 737 clásicos. La flota actual de Boeing 737-300 es de 73 unidades que se retirará a finales del tercer trimestre. En cuanto a los 737 Next Generation (NG) de tercera generación como los Boeing 737-700 tiene una flota de 498 y Boeing 737-800 de 197 aviones en servicio. La eliminación de los clásicos marcará el mayor número de retiros de aviones en la historia de Southwest Airlines, informan desde la compañía.

La flota de los 737 clásicos que todavía están en servicio comercial, 21 aviones están en arrendamientos operativos. Esto generará un cargo de US$ 60 millones en pagos punitorios como resultado de la finalización anticipada de estos contratos de arrendamiento. Además varias aeronaves pasarían a planta de mantenimiento a su regreso de los alquileres respectivos, pero agrega que no se espera que los costos sean significativos.
