Kunming Airlines recibió el primero de los diez aviones Boeing 737-8 MAX pedidos. La filial de Shenzhen Airlines ya era un operador puro de Boeing 737 y vuela exclusivamente a destinos en China y Tailandia.
La empresa china en ordenó originalmente diez Boeing 737-7 MAX durante el Salón Aeronáutico Internacional Farnborough 2016, pero ese tipo aún no está certificado por lo que ha cambiado a la serie MAX 8. Es por eso que la compañía aérea tendrá acceso a la nueva variante de Boeing a través de Shenzhen Airlines que ha encomendado 46 Boeing 737-8 MAX.
