Boeing ha comunicado que el Proyecto NMA se activaría nuevamente
The Boeing Company está echando un nuevo vistazo al diseño de su llamado Nuevo Avión del Mercado Medio (NMA) debido a los cambios en el mercado mundial de la aviación y al mayor enfoque en las interacciones entre pilotos y aviones. “Probablemente adoptaremos un enfoque diferente. Vamos a comenzar con una hoja de papel limpia, de nuevo”, dijo el Presidente Ejecutivo de Boeing, David Calhoun, el 22 Enero 2020.
David Calhoun ha proporcionado pocos detalles acerca del NMA, diciendo que el enfoque principal de la compañía sigue siendo los productos existentes, comenzando con el 737 MAX, y en mejorar las funciones de seguridad e ingeniería de la compañía, pero cita los cambios en el mercado como una razón para la reevaluación de la NMA. “Las cosas han cambiado un poco. El campo de juego competitivo es un poco diferente. Tenemos que planificar para China”, expresa el CEO de Boeing.
Boeing propuso la NMA hace varios años y había anticipado que el avión transportaría alrededor de 270 asientos, tendría un alcance de 4.000-5.000nm (7.400-9.300km) y entraría en servicio a mediados de la década de 2020, justo a tiempo para el retiro de las flotas de 757 y 767. Pero el desarrollo de NMA aparentemente ha estado congelado desde la puesta a tierra del 737 MAX en Marzo 2019. Mientras tanto, Airbus intervino y lanzó el A321XLR el año pasado. Ese avión ha demostrado ser enormemente popular entre las aerolíneas y le ha sacado años de ventaja en ventas y mercado.
Boeing reconoce que el diseño de la NMA debe centrarse en el sistema de control de vuelo y en cómo los pilotos interactúan con ese sistema, un tema destacado por los choques del 737 MAX. “Podríamos tener que comenzar con la filosofía de control de vuelo antes de llegar al avión. Las decisiones de diseño relacionadas con los pilotos que vuelan aviones son muy importantes para el regulador y para que podamos entender”, dice Calhoun sobre el desarrollo de NMA.

The Boeing Company is taking a new look at the design of its so-called New Middle-Market Airplane (NMA) due to changes in the global aviation market and the greater focus on interactions between pilots and airplanes. “We will probably take a different approach. We’re going to start with a clean sheet of paper, again”, Boeing Executive President David Calhoun said on January 22, 2020.
David Calhoun has provided few details about the NMA, saying that the company’s main focus remains on existing products, starting with the 737 MAX, and improving the company’s safety and engineering functions, but cites changes in the market as a reason for the reevaluation of the NMA. “Things have changed a bit. The competitive playing field is a bit different. We have to plan for China”, says Boeing CEO.
Boeing proposed the NMA several years ago and had anticipated that the plane would carry around 270 seats, reach 4,000-5,000nm (7,400-9,300km) and enter service in the mid-2020s, just in time for the Withdrawal of the 757 and 767 fleets. But the development of NMA has apparently been frozen since the grounding of the 737 MAX in March 2019. Meanwhile, Airbus intervened and launched the A321XLR last year. That plane has proven to be hugely popular with airlines and has taken years of advantage in sales and market.
Boeing recognizes that the NMA’s design should focus on the flight control system and how pilots interact with that system, a topic highlighted by the 737 MAX crashes. “We might have to start with the flight control philosophy before arriving at the plane. Design decisions related to pilots flying planes are very important for the regulator and for us to understand“, Calhoun says of the development of NMA.
