Boeing begins construction of European Sheffield plant
The work has officially begun at the new aerospace giant’s Boeing manufacturing facility in Sheffield Business Park, which will create new ties between the company’s facilities in the UK and the US.
The 66,200-square-foot (6,200-square-meter) building will open in late 2018 and will manufacture performance system components for Boeing’s next generation 737 NG, 737 MAX and 777 aircraft.
The Sheffield plant is part of Boeing’s larger plan to grow internal production of selective technologies and Boeing Sheffield’s team will manufacture key performance systems with improved productivity, improved production efficiency and reduced costs while maintaining quality.
Seven months after announcing our intention to build a factory in South Yorkshire, we are proud to celebrate the Boeing Sheffield innovation and welcome more Boeing employees to our company. Boeing Sheffield is further proof of Boeing’s long-term commitment to the prosperity of this country.
We are grateful to the communities in Sheffield and Rotherham as well as Sheffield City Council and the Local Business Association of the Sheffield City Region for supporting Boeing Sheffield and our growing presence in the region.
The Boeing Fabrication facility in Portland, Gresham, Oregon, USA, will also produce actuators and assemble actuation systems for these models as a new job statement.
Boeing Sheffield will produce up to 8,000 components per month to be shipped to Boeing Portland to be assembled into performance systems.
The Sheffield plant will initially employ 30 people at the opening, growing more than 50 employees, including 19 manufacturing trainees, who have already been recruited and are being trained at the Advanced Manufacturing Research Center (AMRC) in Rotherham.
Boeing also plans to initiate a major research and development program with AMRC to develop new manufacturing techniques that can be applied to Boeing Sheffield facilities and then tapped along Boeing.
