Aerolíneas Argentinas enviará la próxima semana su proyecto de presupuesto 2018 al Congreso con una previsión de reducción del déficit de un 41% respecto de este año: registrará una necesidad de subsidios de 100 millones de dólares, frente a los 170 millones de dólares que recibirá en 2017.

Entre 2009 y 2015, el Estado le transfirió a la empresa unos $ 26.000 millones. Su presidente aseguró que, aunque ya se ejecutó cerca del 80% de las transferencias del Estado de este año, no necesitará refuerzos porque “las necesidades se concentran en el primer semestre”.

AW-702110077Aerolíneas Argentinas inició el vuelo inaugural entre Córdoba y Santiago de Chile, que tiene tres frecuencias semanales y compite con Latam Airlines y la low cost chilena Sky Airline. El número uno de la aerolínea de bandera destacó que en dos años los pasajeros de Aerolíneas aumentaron un 28%, en un marco de actividad económica que combinó recesión con una mejora moderada que recién ahora empieza a percibirse en determinados sectores.

La semana pasada, Aerolíneas envió a la Auditoría General de la Nación los balances de 2014 y 2015, y antes de fin de año remitirá el de 2016. “Volveremos a tener un DNI de compañía -graficó Dell’Acqua-, podremos conseguir financiación a menores tasas y seguir creciendo”. De los dos balances, el peor es el de 2015, cuando convergieron las pérdidas del año anterior.

Alrededor del 15% de los pasajeros de Aerolíneas es gente que nunca había volado. Dell’Acqua describió que toda la industria hace un esfuerzo para atraer a esos clientes y demostrar que el avión es el medio “más económico, más efectivo y más seguro” para unir un país grande como la Argentina. A su entender, el hub Córdoba es un ejemplo de buen funcionamiento y resultados, al unir rutas del Norte y del Sur con una ocupación del 80% promedio en todos los vuelos.

Hoy, todas las rutas se cubren con unidades Embraer de 96 plazas, aunque algunas ya están en condiciones de cambiar a las máquinas más grandes, para 170 pasajeros. El plan de Aerolíneas es cambiar “una por una” las 26 de Austral. La ventaja de los más grandes es que con el 20% más de costos permiten vender 90% más de asientos. Arik Air files suit against Government Nigeria

Nigeria’s Arik Air sues the government for Ethiopia’s takeover

Arik Air has filed a lawsuit against the Nigerian government over plans for the airline to be taken over by Ethiopian Airlines. The lawsuit, filed before the Federal Supreme Court in Lagos, requests that Ethiopian Airlines and the Federal Ministry of Transportation be restricted from the acquisition negotiations.

Arik Air has been under government control through its Asset Management Corporation (AMCON) since February. After months of speculation, Ethiopian Airlines confirmed in late August that it was in fact in talks to administer the crippled Nigerian airline.

Arik Air founder Joseph Arumeni-Ikhide has already expressed strong opposition to any acquisition of Arik Air by the Ethiopians, saying it would launch a legal challenge if it did. He is not the instigator, however, of this lawsuit, which is being pursued by Chris Ndulue, Arik Air Director.

Ndulue’s statement states that while two lawsuits are pending questioning the validity of AMCON’s original acquisition of Arik Air, they can not be discussed with outside parties.

“The plaintiff further argues that the action taken by the first and second accused will have a negative effect on the image of the country, since the plaintiff who is the largest airline will be engaged in another country for management,” says the affidavit of Ndulue. The nearby island of San Juan is only accessible from there by boat. A press release on The Virgin Islands Consortium said the airport “will be closed for commercial flights until further notice.”

A RAF A400M transport plane arrived on Saturday, bringing dozens of soldiers to help launch the recovery process. The airport has been badly damaged, but the arrivals hall is being used as a base for the recovery operation.

French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said that local authorities in the French side believed that 95% of the houses had been damaged and 60% had been left uninhabitable.

The island is divided between the French St. Martin and the Dutch St. Maarten, where the Dutch government estimated on Saturday that 70 percent of homes were badly damaged or destroyed, leaving much of the population in public shelters while prepared for the arrival of Joseph. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said the situation was still “bleak” on the island, where widespread looting had erupted and the state of emergency was in place.

Rutte said about 230 Dutch troops and police were patrolling St. Maarten to maintain order and deliver aid, and another 200 would arrive in the next few days. The government evacuated 65 dialysis patients from the St. Maarten hospital, which was also severely beaten by Irma. The island’s afflictions increased as St. Barts airport closed, and Anguilla and San Martin were open only to the military, rescue crews and relief organizations. Others, including St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands, banned overpasses.

On Saturday, St. Maarten Prime Minister William Marlin said some 1,600 tourists had been evacuated and efforts are being made to move 1,200 more. Marlin said many countries and individuals have offered aid to St. Maarten, but authorities are waiting for weather conditions to see how it can be coordinated.

Before the hurricanes, Princess Juliana International Airport in St. Maarten was one of the main tourist attractions of the Dutch colony, thanks to a track that ended a few meters from the sandy ridge of Maho beach where people could look how low jets came over their heads. After Irma, aerial images shot by Dutch marines showed that the sands of Maho Beach had been washed and the airport was badly damaged. The Dutch military is using the runway, which was flooded by high tides during the hurricane, to transport aid supplies, but say it is not yet open to civilian flights as there are no runway lights or air traffic control.
