Airbus Group SE believes that its A320NEO line overselling policy will give the European manufacturer a degree of flexibility to manage the impact of the Coronavirus crisis on its production and delivery processes.
Chief Executive Officer Guillaume Faury says the single-aisle order book with more than 6,200 A320 family aircraft includes a significant level of overselling that is providing a cushion for future deliveries. Although the engine problems that subsequently affected deliveries, along with delays in accelerating orders placed, particularly with the Cabin-Flex version of the A321NEO, have caused Airbus to stock up “quite a significant number of oversold aircraft. That now it’s very useful”, says the Airbus executive.
Deliberate overselling has previously allowed Airbus to buffer the effect on deliveries during a number of different situations, including crises in the industry, though none as profound as the Coronavirus situation. “We anticipate that this will happen again with this [crisis] on the A320NEO. As airlines revisit capital spending plans, he says, the quality and size of the backlog will serve as a buffer and will have a high degree of flexibility given your contractual rights, in the event of deferment or cancellation, to withhold pre-delivery payments, reassign slots or re-market aircraft”, says Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury.
