The airline said the E190 will allow it to introduce a business class cabin on the routes of Pietermaritzburg and Bulawayo, as well as giving passengers additional seating space.
The E190 is configured with six business class seats and 92 economy seats. The E-Jets will also provide Airlink with operational performance and superior range, according to the airline, which also operates a significant fleet of ERJ 135, ERJ 140 and ERJ 145. Eleven additional ERJ 140s began arriving in December 2016 and will carry The ERJ fleet to type 30 at the end of this year.
A new route for the E190s, which will be ETOPS certified, will be the route from Johannesburg to St. Helena. St Helena is a remote British-owned island in the South Atlantic, which has been looking for a suitable aircraft to serve its new airport after windshear and tailwind problems which made it unsuitable for the originally planned operator, Comair South Africa. The British Airways franchisee, Comair, had planned to operate a Boeing 737-800 on the island.
The government of St Helena and Airlink signed an agreement in July 2017 for scheduled air services. In the coming weeks, Airlink will be finalizing regulatory approvals with the South African Civil Aviation Authority for the St. Helena liaison. After the necessary approvals, services are expected to start in October.
