La aerolínea alemana Air Berlin cesaría sus operaciones el 28 Octubre 2017

Las líneas aéreas Lufthansa e Easyjet buscan negociar una salida con la compra de parte de los activos de Air Berlin ante el inicio de cierre definitivo.

El 15 de octubre Air Berlin cesará sus vuelos de largo radio. El 28 de octubre es la fecha para la que se han anunciado sus últimos vuelos con su código de vuelo, aunque algunas partes de ella sobrevivirán. Niki y LGW, que opera los aviones Bombardier Q400 continuarán en vuelo. Los Airbus A320 que operan para Lufthansa también seguirán operando.

Air Berlin, fundada en la ciudad que la da nombre en 1978, cuando las aerolíneas alemanas todavía tenían vetado volar a dicha ciudad, ya tiene una fecha grabada en su lápida: 28 de octubre de 2017.

El estado alemán ha otorgado un crédito de emergencia que concedió a Air Berlin. Lufthansa básicamente ha ofertado quedarse con los aviones que ya operan para su filial low cost Eurowings y contratar a las tripulaciones de estos aviones. Eurowings ya ha lanzado una campana de reclutamiento de 1.000 nuevos empleados entre pilotos, TCP y personal de tierra. Lufthansa ha señalado que el cierre de Air Berlin supone que tendrá que contratar a unos 3.000 empleados para cubrir el hueco que deje esta.

Luftfahrtgesellschaft Walter (LGW) opera 20 Q400 para Air Berlin en rutas cortas o de baja demanda. Ambas se asociaron en 2007 y en 2009 Air Berlin la adquirió. La quiebra de Air Berlin no afectará a esta.
